  • So the EPB is a common problem with the Land Rover Discovery 3/4 series and Range Rover Sport... Unfortunately it's a very expensive repair, or is it??
Wimpy takes on the challenge of replacing the gears inside the Electronic Parking Brake Module to avoid replacing it and saving over £1000.

This video gave me the confidence to get on and do the job myself, I've been putting it off for a while and the MOT is due shortly! I had previously managed to un-wind the jammed actuator but by that time the plastic gear were wrecked so it didn't work after reassembling. Anyway I watched this video and tackled the job. Doing it this way does not require the extraction of the whole actuator and cables, a big benefit! Even so it took me about 15 hours in total. The problem with my unit was much the same, all to do with the spring and retaining circlip. Saved me a fortune, Thank you.

Landyworx here in South Africa have actually engineered brass gears for a permanent fix for that module at half the cost of a new EPB module.

Nicely done! Just a few moments: 1) You do not need and should not to put tension sensor from it (its film cable is super fragile). 2) When installing motor back, make sure you spinned 5-6 spins (no more!) on the thread, it is how it should be when your right and left cables are in brake pads changing position.

Thanks for this mate. I'd overlooked that allen screw loosening, tapping and retightening to 6 NM on the inner brake.
Which I'll be doing after repairing my EPB module. Not sure why you felt the need to completely remove the cables
from the wheel hub assembly. Since it appears you just reinstalled them for the new brakes. I'd read that there is a
sensor somewhere that will trigger a dash warning/fault if the spring resistance to the cable is altered too much. So
it is probably wise to replace them as you did.

Meaning it'll need adjustment sooner or you'll have the same problem again. The motor setup gets to the end of its travel and thats when the problems occour.

Don't be a bell and use a grinder without a guard. Your gf will hate you if you lose your finger work.
Also, if the gears are wracked, there might be some added resistance within the cables or brake calipers.
Replace those or clean and lube with red rubber grease
Car manufacturers don't make cars. well they kind of do but they make cars so they can make money on selling parts.
My advice is always buy 20 years old vehicles.
You can get some real good deals and get work completed the right way if not do the work yourself as older cars are incredibly easy to work on, you just need to use a disc guard on your grinder and you're all set to go.
