My dads original disco 1 Tdi got over 800,000km. The origional, proper Land Rovers were fairly solid. The problem now days is that they're nearly 30 years old and at that age any car will have issues.
The disco is the most reliable Range....ugly but reliable for a Range:)) by no means a reliable car.....1k for such a car....i dont believe this guy....too cheap.....why would you sell it so cheap if it runs only the parts are waaaay more.....
Matt buys a £1000 pair of sunglasses and gets a free Disco and a hat. 😂 Back of the net!!!! Cheers for the videos fella. I love old cars, probably cause its all I can afford, these videos are great for seeing what to look out for. 👍
Just bought a 2005 disco 3, already replaced the tailgate actuator, all wheel nuts & lockings, one wheel, 4 tyres, taken off side steps to reveal both sides with rusted sills that need cutting out and replacing, rear arb links, both rear upper suspension arms & bushes, brake pipes & hoses, fuel tank cradle, gearbox guard. Yet strangely i still don’t regret it, love driving it
Give Land Rover props for still being able to sell high priced luxury regardless of reliability. As a land rover sales guy once said it’s not can you afford an Land Rover it’s can you afford to maintain it, they do have nice courtesy cars though lol
Tax breaks mean companys buy them ... bloody lovely to drive and a really nice place to be in any land rover . Sadly while every other company sussed you get repeat customers thanks to reliability landys sell more thanks to dodging the tax obligations . Id have one but this is what £650 to tax a year ? ..... sod that
My mate paid £6k a couple of years ago for an 06 plate Disco 3, with 160k miles. Although his is the HSE. So £2k to sort this car, £3k in total, isn't bad really. It's in a tidy state, so I would say it is worth it, especially if you're gonna keep it for a while. Spend the £2k, and get it serviced pronto, and you'll have a decent work horse for a couple of years at least.
£1000 with 10 months ticket? No big problems with it (apart from the grill & stick-on crome 🤢) and could easily be done fairly cheaply, step by step. Your problem is still looking at it as a sales prospect with your perfectionism. A great smoker for the winter keeping your other Range Rovers mollycoddled!
Best line of the video for me was the confirmation from Car Vertical that with 202,000 miles on the clock that it hadn’t been rolled back 😂 brilliant video as always Matt and I reckon that if someone who knows what they are doing buys this that it’s still a great looking 4x4 😎
Mr. Peak, I have been addicted your videos not just because they are ridiculously entertaining but because they are educational as well. Thank you for your honest work and great content. I never ever comment but your amazing work made me show my appreciation.
I really liked these cars. Still looks nice. I understand your caution Matt. You spend 2k on something and then the engine goes bang and the money is burnt.
On first impressions, before you said "someones smothered it in chrome" , I thought it was a higher spec at £1000 . And at 2:10 , I am guessing that you have massively overspent 😂Loving the series as always, each car has its quirky features, and those discos are quite nice to drive (sometimes) .
Last month I found a Disco 3 HSE going for scrap. Owner listed it as needing new suspension, Handbrake, etc & was blowing black smoke. I already own an identical car, so I thought for £400, I'd buy and use it for spare parts. Drove it less than half mile down the road & pulled into a supermaket carpark & had a look under the hood. Turbo hose was not properly connected. Connected it properly - Black smoke gone :). Next I pulled my Nano-com out and found the suspension/handbrake errors were all pointing to a sticky EGR valve. Had the car fixed before I got home. She was in near-mint condition. Sold it last week for £5,500. :)
I said this somewhere else in relation to JLR infamous reliability ... The plus side of owning one of these car is the meaningful bonds and relationships you get to build with the mechanics and staff at your service centre ... My uncle's best man ended up being the head of servicing and maintenance at his local dealership and he had only met him two years earlier...
I had a four year old Disco, same as this with less that 40k on the clock. It started blowing blue/grey smoke. I took it to my local LR expert (a real local expert) who told me, I quote "The only good Land Rover ever made was the old Defender and the EU stopped us making them". The bill for my 'smoke' was £7k. Two new turbochargers and all the associated parts. A month later one of the new turbos went again. Repaired under warranty luckily. I traded it in on a Volvo XC60 and never looked back.
Glad to see that with the defects noted (and that they'd be an MOT failure) you haven't kept it on the road. Camera crews seem to love these but I've always wondered if you'd be better with a 5-series touring on air suspension (for the smooth ride and the glass boot hatch).
Hi Matt regarding the wheels definitely from a Range Rover sport i think an early se spec I always get excited when I see a LandRover vehicle on your channel pity that’s not the one without spending a fortune on it like you not keen on all the cheap plastic tat stuck to it great video hope you are well best wishes ian
Disco 3 owner here: Having a saggy corner (or an airbag that doesn't inflate properly) doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong with the airbags. Our D3 had similar issues and it was just the air valve block malfunctioning up front. They get gummed up over time with the air compressor desiccant bead debris/powder and don't regulate the air to the bags properly. Cheap and easy fix. Our 2006 has 210k miles on the air bags and no leaks or sagging after replacing them.
Right decision matt but an ideal driveway DIY car to be done as and when over time sourcing parts and repair it run it 18 months 2 years then £500 quid and scrap it after you've had some fun with it keep the video's coming matt 👍
You have a thing about cheap tyres, I never buy expensive tyres, I always go for a good wet rating but as I don’t drive around like a boy racer, I don’t see the point in paying £150 plus for a tyre when I can get two for the same price 😅
I really liked my Disco2, but the main issue is rust and of course to work on the chassis, you have to be able to lift the body off which for DIY people is pretty hard. If it was a higher spec I'd be interested as most of your faults can be done cheaply.
To be fair Matt I´ve just replaced the original front airbags on my Discovery 4 at 240,000 miles, I wouldn´t call the air suspension fragile at all, nor complicated to repair, the only other thing it´s needed is a compressor three years ago.
It's not that bad that MOT fail list is pretty short for the age and mileage I suspected hat this was maintained well up to a point. I think for £1000 you could have done a lot worse. And the fact its made it 200k miles and the engine is still sounding sweet and hasn't snapped a crank I would think it is a good one. Fully understand why you wouldn't trust it though. My personal experience with Land Rover products is higher mileage and good maintenance is better than a car that sat for while its always when they seat that you end up with endless electricall and air suspension faults
There’s a bit of a car in there somewhere. Everything is bolt on and not massively difficult. Your ARB link are Anti Roll Bar link or rear drop links. For future reference, LR Centre in Liverpool do a spring conversion kit. £600 plus your chosen garages labour for all 4 struts and the gubbins to make your dashboard shut up. Not bad when you consider the cost and fragility of the air suspension stuff.
I was expecting this to be alot worse, for 200k its actually not that bad. Engine sounds great, fired straight up. I suspected it was a company vehicle, and serviced in house. Know way thats lasted 90k with out maintenance 😂
I have to admit that I just went straight to the end of the video and was expecting "I have massively overspent" and was pleasantly surprised to find out you had learned not to do that. Next trick is to learn not to buy in the first place, or just ship the trade in out as parts before you even see it!
Had a disco 3 for 6 years, done 150,000 miles on it so 200,000 overall. Never taken to landrover, servicesd myself. Would never take one to landrover. Have a Disco 5 now and will still not take it for a service at Landrover. If you service it when due they are no trouble apart from standard parts being a heavy car.
My 54reg Disco3 SE has now done 205K probably one of the earliest and I love it for the family, dog, pulling and lugging stuff. Still original apart from chrome mirror covers which i put on as had the passenger mirror knocked off a few years ago, never happened again. Those alloys are not original and most GS models would not have colour painted arches. The SE has a greater level of comfort than the one you have there. I am having constant problems with the air compressor and suspension and only replaced it two years ago. I miss it at the moment as it is waiting for new compressor. Have never put cheap tyres on, always Pirelli Scorpions. I have a large folder of all history with the car so would hopefully meet with your approval, and i service it every year regardless of mileage. That bong towards the end was too familiar to me and knew the problem before you said it!!! If you have a blown rear bulb that could be a reason for a number of faults, I remember my mechanic once first checking the rear lamps when diagnosing any problems as can cause a number of issues.
My 55 plate Disco had it's third suspension pump last month. Had it seven years. Ebay pump was only £115 and I can swap it in 40 mins. Still suspension errors everywhere but she keeps going!!
I rebuilt my pump with a kit, cost about 40 quid and an hours work. If you're handy with spanners and a laptop, and have the enthusiasm then disco 3s are no worse to work on than any other modern car. Problem is people who don't know how or can't do the work themselves have to pay the garage and when the cars get to a certain age it isnt viable. I sold it a few years ago with 150k on the clock with very few issues over the 75k I put on the clock, they just need regular maintenance. I'd buy another tomorrow as long as it had been looked after, they're great car without the stigma of a RR. Sorry Matt, I know you like your Rangie 😅
Great video again, Matt, as usual! Love the Discovery but don't have the bobs to own one, even a secondhand one. Keep on with the great content. Love this channel and the property channel too, of course! Greetings from Dublin.
So funny Matt. A 200k £1000 LR what did you really expect 😂? Besides your phobia of the ‘chrome’ the LR looks good but as always run on a budget, and could it honestly have passed the very recent MOT with the current mechanical list you have? How much are you prepared to spend for a ‘crew car’? Is it worth sorting the problems instead of purchasing something more expensive and potentially costing more? Always fun to watch, even when I’m in Mallorca.
My parents had one of these for 12 years that they owned from brand new. It was a 2005 Disco 3 TDV6 S in a very dark blue in 7 seat configuration. It had xenon lights, auto box, heated seats and the upgraded stereo. They never had any major issues with it over 12 years and 70k miles with full LR service history. It was good and solid - even my mom says now she wishes she would’ve kept it because she loved it!
@@jaymakesvideo I also wonder what did this person meant... May be that it will be better to say "she wished she would've kept" or something? I don't know English is not my native language and learned it like 20 years ago and a bit rusty. Really interested what that person meant =)
@@jaymakesvideo It's called "she wishes she had kept it". Because it's in the past. "Would have" is used in conditional sentences and implys a possible future that didn't happen, for example "If i had known better, I would have never married her" 😉 And no, I'm not an English Teacher.
I think this Disco 3 is a Real Survivor! , the MOT fail list was remarkable short for a vehicle used as a workhorse for the last 16 years with no significant Service History. Let’s make no mistake the Land Rover Discovery 3 really is a great vehicle which as a result of it’s complexity and fantastic ability requires much more maintenance😢 than a mechanically much simpler Defender or a Toyo 28:34 Land Cruiser which it leaves behind on and sometimes off road (I own a std Def). Unfortunately this level of sophistication and complexity ultimately comes at a cost and requires significantly more maintenance which many second and third owners are not prepared to pay for. If underbody is not corroded and no sign of accident damage I would invest in this vehicle & de-chrome it and fitting sensible standard D3 wheels & tyres. It looks like it has many more years left with some new airbags and some TLC, commercially not feasible but could make sense for a savvy and practical DIY owner.
“why do I do it to myself!!” I think we know the real reason Matt, but be careful it doesn’t become too obvious! Sometimes when you over emphasize this point the vid starts to lack a bit of sincerity. (sorry to be negative. Long time subscriber & lover of the channel)
For £1000, I would be quite proud to be driving around in that. 🙂 And yes, I would keep plucking at those jobs until it was perfect! First job: get rid of those Chinese tyres (which should be banned from the UK anyway) and put some British or German ones on.
@@spingybingy5610 Accelera tyres are produced by PT. Elangperdana Tyre Industry in Indonesia. One of the oldest most established tyre companies in the world 🌎 Elangperdana Tyre Industry started producing its first tyres in 1996. The factory is located near a mountain in Sub - County Citeureup, Bogor city, three kms north of the Sentul International Circuit, with a total area of 208,000 sqm of land. I have used the All-Season IOTA ST-68 on my BMW X5 for years. They are superb! High quality, quiet, great grip in all weather on tarmac and off road, long lasting...and above all they are a low price compared to major UK, US and European top brands.
My ex's dad had one of these. Had a really unreliable X5 so swapped it for a new Disco 3 in 2009. Surprisingly it was absolutely faultless. Had just over 200k miles on it after 4 years, sold it to a farmer to use as a farm hack (as of a few years ago it was still in use). Went for a Disco 4 in 2013 which as of a few years ago was on about 280k and was just as reliable as the 3. No idea if he's still got it, not sure if it's worth getting back in touch with my ex just to ask about her dads car...... 🤔
I really love Discovery's, either disco 3 or 4. Were having to get rid of our family car (a ford edge) because we live in Poland and it snows loads and the car is just no good in the snow. I'd love to get a disco 3 or 4 but the missus hates them. Closest I can get her to agree to is a discovery sport
I know you love Land Rovers, but they are very maintenance intensive and expensive to own. There are plenty of non-runners lying in people's yards waiting for fixes that will probably never come. Beautiful styling and interiors, but nightmare mechanical woes. Perhaps it's different in the UK, but specialists in the states are very spendy.
I get my car services every year but always forget to give the garage my service book to stamp - I just keep the invoice in with the service records. Anyone can get a fake stamp if they wanted anyway, so you can't beat an invoice.
My mum still drives a 2004 Disco 3 with the 4.4L V8 - it has 280k miles on it, and still runs absolutely fine. Over its nearly 2 decades of life it had many fixes, but literally nothing has ever gone wrong with the engine. It just starts every time and runs beautifully, I keep telling her that the rest of the car is going to turn into rust before that V8 gives up. Absolutely comical fuel economy(sub 20mpg), but it just works.
I love how you're in that first of l322 the majority of your travels to see cars. It always has a little cameo appearance in these videos and it's great. Best car ever made in my opinion and Mr Clarkson"s
There's still life in that despite having been run on the cheap. Wear in suspension and steering parts to be expected on a 3 tonne car. £2 k spent would give you a couple more years. 2.7 is OK if oil pump and belts done. Waxoyl them before the rot sets in. Cheaper than depreciation on anything newer and they are great trucks to drive
The Hat and the shades on Matt look so funny xD, Matt looks like the typical Corsa driver at a MCDonalds car park xD Great video as usual, shame about the Disco! :D
Still driving a 2013 Disco 4 with 177k on the clock part of me wants to trade it in while I will still get some money for it and maybe get a jeep or keep it until it pops because its still a good car and I'm not bored with it after 4 years it gets a full service every year with genuine parts and only recently had a problem with the water in fuel sensor which needed replacing
Another brilliant video Matt, really enjoy your channel. You'll need to do a new video to go through all the sunglasses and other swag you've picked up over the years!
I would appreciate if you add the manufacturing year in the description. Nice videos mate. (It is mentioned early in the video, but some folks go thru the description to determine whether or not watching the whole thing).
absolutely disagree with your issue with air suspension that is one of the best things about them. but looks like you got lucky on the disco and they are not as bad as made out to be :) and you rrepairs needed are to be expected and only expensive if you have to get someone else to do it as you noted :) love your videos keep it up
My son bought a Hyundai i30 on a 64 plate and it looked and drove okay. It turned out to have a bent MoT from the sellers cousin who ran a back street garage in Peterborough. I think even Car Vertical can't help with this as the info will be as good as what is recorded. I think this Landy has had the same.
Do a Commercial conversion if you can source the mesh bulkhead/floor for reasonable money. Farmers, builders, contractors will pay decent money for them cos they're rare. It's not 'Chelsea' enough for a family car. Just my opinion.
I learnt my lesson early on. Had one of these. Absolute luxury. My daughter use to sit in the back seat and watch DVDs on long trips. I felt like I was sitting in a lounge chair. But what a lemon! despite paying Aus $ 28,000 I had nothing but trouble. Sold it for so much less 18 months later.
To be honest the fact that this actually has 200k miles and is still on the road is an achievement in itself.

Very good. I had a 54 4.4 V8 many years ago. Loved that car
No D3 came with painted arches!
I think your well rid of the LR3 Matt. What about an old Volvo XC90? It has 7 seats, split tailgate and a lot more reliable.
What could possibly go wrong?? 🤔🤔 " Due to our new Camera Car, you join us live from the forecourt of High Peak Autos.... Again! " 😁😁🤣🤣
Hahaha exactly
Clicked instantly as I’m in the market for one of these. I live in chipping Norton so feel a bit left out driving my non JLR car…
you will need a second car as well for when the land rover is not running
My parents had one of these for 12 years that they owned from brand new. It was a 2005 Disco 3 TDV6 S in a very dark blue in 7 seat configuration. It had xenon lights, auto box, heated seats and the upgraded stereo. They never had any major issues with it over 12 years and 70k miles with full LR service history. It was good and solid - even my mom says now she wishes she would’ve kept it because she loved it!
'wishes she would've kept it'.....!?!?
What the hell!!!
Did they not teach English at your school......!??!?!?
@@andymccabe6712 I’m assuming you can’t understand why she would’ve wanted to keep it? As my grammar and spelling looks fine LOL.
"Would have" is used in conditional sentences and implys a possible future that didn't happen, for example "If i had known better, I would have never married her" 😉
And no, I'm not an English Teacher.
Would of ??😂
Oh Matt you are such an optimist, and that’s why we love you. Keep up the good work saving these lemons 👍🏼🧐
I totally agree with you! Still going strong and just a little love.
“why do I do it to myself!!” I think we know the real reason Matt, but be careful it doesn’t become too obvious! Sometimes when you over emphasize this point the vid starts to lack a bit of sincerity.
(sorry to be negative. Long time subscriber & lover of the channel)
Gotta love the discovery man😁
For £1000, I would be quite proud to be driving around in that. 🙂 And yes, I would keep plucking at those jobs until it was perfect! First job: get rid of those Chinese tyres (which should be banned from the UK anyway) and put some British or German ones on.
Or Korean :)
Or French.
Or Indonesia.
@@Globetrotter-1 Korean = hankook, nexen, kumho. French= pirelli. China = ditchfinders like linglong. What's made in indonesia?

I have used the All-Season IOTA ST-68 on my BMW X5 for years. They are superb! High quality, quiet, great grip in all weather on tarmac and off road, long lasting...and above all they are a low price compared to major UK, US and European top brands.
The 2007 Disco was a great edition , I had one for ten years it was a Diamond 💎first land rover D edition that had a reliable reputation.
Maybe you will get a ride for old times sake ?
@@pincermovement72 🤣🤣
Could we see more of the step by step process of the prep work please?
A 'meet the team' episode would be great. :)
Here in mainland Europe too, last in the relaiability list after Fiat and that tells a lot...
@@MrSparklespring Bingo.
Heeey. Always glad to see you in LR. It feels natural. Don't listen to people, buy them all.
We all saw Cheap Discovery… and instantly know he’s overspent 😂
Yep my thoughts
I get my car services every year but always forget to give the garage my service book to stamp - I just keep the invoice in with the service records. Anyone can get a fake stamp if they wanted anyway, so you can't beat an invoice.
They should have been called Land Rover Recovery because that’s what you would need to get home.
20 decades it is vintage
@@Mr330d thanks corrected
It's called "Discovery" because you discover new problems everytime you turn the engine on
😂😂😂
Just clocked the Hat and glasses featuring at 18mins in... Class
2:14 or maybe POS
Also I mean Autoalex has one for the exact same purpose so it dose make a good film car when it’s working.
That’s what I was thinking
I’m at 13 minutes and so far it’s better than expected but the video is nearly 30 min so I guess it is not
I love how you're in that first of l322 the majority of your travels to see cars. It always has a little cameo appearance in these videos and it's great. Best car ever made in my opinion and Mr Clarkson"s
I due hope he doesn’t massively overspend this time (said sarcastically)
Some say Matt rides around with ian Drury sounds...in the deserts of Sudan....
If you now have staff. This could be a motivation tool. "Right, who doesn't want to drive the Disco"
😂😂
There's still life in that despite having been run on the cheap. Wear in suspension and steering parts to be expected on a 3 tonne car. £2 k spent would give you a couple more years. 2.7 is OK if oil pump and belts done. Waxoyl them before the rot sets in. Cheaper than depreciation on anything newer and they are great trucks to drive
My Discovery cost me $15k in repairs. I hate this brand now! So much!
The Hat and the shades on Matt look so funny xD, Matt looks like the typical Corsa driver at a MCDonalds car park xD
Great video as usual, shame about the Disco! :D
A cheap JLR product definitely means massively overspent.
Especially if it has 200k miles
Still driving a 2013 Disco 4 with 177k on the clock part of me wants to trade it in while I will still get some money for it and maybe get a jeep or keep it until it pops because its still a good car and I'm not bored with it after 4 years it gets a full service every year with genuine parts and only recently had a problem with the water in fuel sensor which needed replacing
Without watching, I can for sure not say that he massively overspent, he might actually go banktup with such a car 😂
Presenting in spot on mate. Regarding cars it's the best I've seen.
Can we stop all these repetitive “massively overspent” top comments ffs we get it
Why does that massively offend you? 😂
@@HighPeakAutos I think you should add that as a T-Shirt slogan on your sellables!
"I massively overspent so you don't have to"
Another brilliant video Matt, really enjoy your channel. You'll need to do a new video to go through all the sunglasses and other swag you've picked up over the years!
You know Matt, you kind of look like a dignified gangster with that beanie and shades. Love to see it😂
You’re very brave wearing the hat and glasses. My OCD wouldn’t let me do that without washing them and full disinfection first!
18:00 Well-maintained-looking car with no service history - weird! Here in BC, Canada they're all like that.
Hi Matt bet your film team were gutted that they did not get that car. Service history said it all for me take care hope you find your team car
I would appreciate if you add the manufacturing year in the description. Nice videos mate. (It is mentioned early in the video, but some folks go thru the description to determine whether or not watching the whole thing).
18:08 scared the shit out of me 😂 Matt looking like the phonejacker
absolutely disagree with your issue with air suspension that is one of the best things about them. but looks like you got lucky on the disco and they are not as bad as made out to be :) and you rrepairs needed are to be expected and only expensive if you have to get someone else to do it as you noted :) love your videos keep it up
My son bought a Hyundai i30 on a 64 plate and it looked and drove okay.
