Ha, when I was like 18 I was walking up an alleyway almost home from work anda couple of the neighborhood kids ran up to me and said their little sister had climbed a fire escape. The baby was maybe 24 months at the most. I ran up the fire escape and found her on the roof of a 3 floor apartment building, standing on the edge looking down. I sure didn't want to scare her. When she heard me she turned around to face me with her heels on the edge. I don't do heights myself and it was incredibly hot so my head was already spinning- but she was fine, just looking at me. I was so scared I would cause her to take a step backwards. I managed to approach her really slowly, telling her I had candy for her. Then when I got close enough I lunged at her and caught her arm. When I carried her down her mom was at the bottom, her mom was there, having been retrieved from the bar on the corner. She just took her baby like "thanks" 🤣🤣🤣. That was over 20 years ago. I still think about her every now and then, what she's up to, how she has changed the world. She probably has kids by now, and who knows what they and their descendants might do? It's so strange, how really, everything that happens is some kind of butterfly effect of a million different people making precisely the decisions they did when they did.

It wasn't a "locked binocular room" it was a locked locker at the crows nest. It's also a myth that the binoculars would have helped as the there was no moon while the sea was calm and foggy that night. The crew would scan the horizon with peripheral vision then examine with a looking glass.

Washington's net worth was equivalent to over $500 million in today's money. He probably had prior knowledge of the factors he could use to defeat the enemy, including their lack of communication and false sense of security. If he was that rich, he was probably also the type to put business before pleasure and attend to any important developments immediately. He would've translated that note in no time.

He was probably hoping that nobody spotted him, but if they did, a breakdown in their communication was equally useful. He may have even pulled a few strings to GUARANTEE that these stooges were on the watch that night. Did you know that the US government has a whole department devoted to communications interception? Having amassed a half billion dollar fortune, Washington was probably readily open to novel concepts which deviated from "common knowledge". After all, if it was so easy to figure out how to get rich, everybody would be doing it. Probably none of his opponents even approached his aptitude in this regard.

However i wouldnt say its his fault, White star line did plenty of things that would condemn the ship if it hit an iceberg. Although having 1 key for important equipment is a msssive oversite, they should have had back ups and the captain should have also had a guy.

I m reading a book on the Titanic called “Unsinkable” by Daniel Butler. It is excellent, I highly recommend it. The author tells an interesting story I had never heard. Apparently, the Titanic was being pulled out of Southampton harbor and it was so huge that it created an immense wake, which pulled a smaller ship called the New York within a few feet of hitting the Titanic, which would have seriously damaged the smaller ship. A man on the Titanic who was watching from the deck, turned to the American theatrical producer Renee Harris and said, “Do you love life? That was a bad omen. Get off this ship at Cherbourg, that’s what I’m going to do.” Mrs. Harris, of course, ignored the man and stayed on the ship. She remembered later after being rescued by the Carpathia, that she had never seen the man again after Cherbourg. He followed his instinct and avoided an almost certain, terrible death. And he also tells the story about the binoculars, although I don’t recall him knowing the backstory about David.

The water was uncharacteristically calm that evening so absent were the the waves usually breaking against an iceberg of that size which meant that the time typically afforded them that have binoculars, was cut so short and combined with their excessive speed the time they would have had stillwouldn't have made a significant difference . It's been a long time since I researched the Titanic obsessively (it was before the Internet, if that hints at how "long" ago and how "obsessive") but I believe I had concluded the only thing that could have been done while everything else remained unchanged was if they had rammed the ice berg head-on. It would have been a willful decision to sacrifice a lot of lives for 100% staying afloat vs. the perceived 99% chance of staying afloat with zero lives lost. Imagine being the officer who made the wrong call because of those odds staring at you and mere seconds to think on it!

The telegraph guys on board Titanic were paid by the Marconi company on the basis of generating business so being interrupted, especially with a piercing noise was regarded as inconvenient. The majority of telegrams being sent by the richest on board would have been drivel. If the men had bothered to stop and listen then the tragedy might have been avoided. However so many small details were overlooked it seems that it was unavoidable. The captain was useless and the crew unprepared because the ship was deemed too big to sink. Human stupidity and arrogance on display. One hundred years on and little has changed.

It was all an insurance job .. I watched a documentary about it .. the titanic was swapped with another ship that had sustained damage but their insurance policy for some reason wouldn’t cover it so the ships were swapped .. the staircase from the britanica .. could be wrong on the names there .. was placed in a museum after it was retired but it’s series code didn’t match that ship .l it matched the titanic ..

@@Dinoheath24 Actually, that's been debunked. They actually found the wreck of the Titanic & the serial # were correct for the Titanic. Interesting enough, the Titanic was the 2nd of 3 ships & the 3rd, initially planned to be called the Gigantic, was commandeered by the British navy as a hospital ship right away & hit a mine & sank after less than a year, but the Olympic(the 1st ship in the series) stayed in service till being scrapped in 1935, despite colliding with 3 ships, ramming & sinking a U-Boat, & being torpedoed.

My grandmother's side of the family (my mother's mother) grew up in East Belfast, not too far from the dockyard where the Titanic was constructed. At the time, my grandmother hadn't yet been born, but her mother and their family still lived in the same area. Now, I'm unsure whether it was my great-grandfather, or my great-great grandfather, however one of them worked on the Titanic when it was being constructed. I think he was an engineer or something or other.
The story goes that the family member obtained tickets for the maiden voyage, and had plans to move to New York to seek better employment and perhaps to start a family. However, just before the ship was due to set off, he became extremely sick and was unfit to travel. So, he didn't go- and if he had, i probably wouldn't be sat here writing this, as the ticket had been for a third-class place. End result- the butterfly effect can truly be scary sometimes

My great grandfather was a bootlegger in Pittsburgh, KS early 1900's. The DA brought 37 charges against him. Because he was so well connected, he was only convicted on 4. There was a big article in the paper at the time that the DA said 'Why go to all this trouble if you're only get a conviction on 4?' So, if you were a bootlegger in Pittsburgh KS in the 1920's & you didn't have the law breathing down your neck too bad for it, you have MY great-grandfather to thank for that!

My great great grandfather in Poland picked up sticks off the ground in the woods because it was winter and they needed to make a fire to keep the kids warm (one was my baby or toddler great grandmother), the occupied Germans considered this theft of government property, gave him a summons when they caught him and he decided to flee to America instead of appearing to court. I exist because my great great grandfather picked up sticks.
*my great aunt wrote a book about my great grandmother that includes this story- Mary strasky: all the way to Cooperstown.
I moved from FL back to NY one year, had a gut feeling that practically made me physically ill because it was so strong that I had to go back, I had absolutely no reason to go back and knew it was a ridiculous idea but the gut feeling wouldn’t stop for 2-3 months. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and went back just so the feeling would stop, a month after I went back I was married and pregnant, had total of 3 kids, those kids and any future descendents exist because of a gut feeling I couldn’t shake.

@@pollutionpoet That wasn't the entire reason the Titanic sank. There were a lot of other errors, that corrected, could have prevented the tragedy. For one, the ship was going much faster than it should have been through those waters. Or another, bulk head doors were left open, for convenience, instead of being sealed. Had they been sealed, it is probable that the Titanic could have limped to NYC. So yes, the lack of binoculars certainly did not help, but it wasn't the only factor in the Titanic's sinking.

100% it changed everything from then to now. Every thing good and bad from the u.s would be different. I think the biggest would be if the u.s was still a colony in 1939 the germans would of won the war. As the industrial power of the young nation wouldnt of been as great. As a colony it woukdnt of needed to be as strong as it had become. And a colony during imperial times shipped alot of what they made or dug up and what not to its imperialist ruler.

Plus they called it the “unsinkable ship” so they probably thought that nothing could happen to them anyways.
