Sherry was hanging out with geniuses who did cosplay murder mysteries. She did this while in disguise, solving an ACTUAL murder mystery, and wasn't even a genius herself.

We actually don't know, she might have had a genius IQ, she just wasn't a Mensa member. You need an I Q over 145 to qualify for Mensa. A number of people have that, they just don't feel like joining. My oldest son is in Mensa, but he went to like two meetings and thought of other things to do. I think he got involved in interpreting a lot of languages, not sure. I'm the village idiot, I have no clue how he came out so amazing, but I'm kinda proud of him.
None of them were or are actual geniuses. So-called IQ is thrown around like alcohol or drugs - it's a poor measure of intelligence.
I should add, Mensa and other high IQ societies are a veritable joke.

I’d heard of this case before, several times, but no one begins the tale with the victim, her personality, her life. Everyone starts with the poisoning and what came after. Thanks for painting such a vivid picture of Peggy as a person. What was done to her was just horrific.
I think thats why I just love what he does with his story telling. Theyre not victims or statistics, theyre people with lives and loved ones who miss them. No one else ever tells us about who they were and often times theyre just reduced to nameless victims.
The podcast 'Small Town Murder' did a good job covering this case.
I always admire the True Crime channels that put the victim in the forefront as opposed to only mentioning the victim when describing their brutal end.

So his brilliant masterful plan wasn`t even a original idea of his own.

Agatha Christie ,the famous murder misery writer, always said that intelligent egotistical murderer's biggest downfall was that they couldn't stop talking about it.
They feel so proud and Superior that they can't help but talk about it to stroke their egos even if they incriminate themselves by doing so.
Her understanding of the psyche of this type of killer is what made her the most famous mystery writer in history.

This is such amazing story telling, the first half of the video I was convinced it was Pie. Then for the second half I was 100% thinking it had to be ‘Sherry’ because of her interest in how George used thallium in the fake murder. Also how you set her up as this crazy woman who wanted to be friends with this ‘lovey couple’. The last 7 minutes? That left my jaw on the floor I was actually so shocked because of how well you created that twist ending. So amazing and I’m very proud to be one of your early subscribers (before 2 or 3 mil I think)

For anyone wondering what thallium is. Thallium is a heavy metal used in the manufacture of electronic components, optical lenses, semiconductor materials, alloys, gamma radiation detection equipment, imitation jewelry, artist's paints, low temperature thermometers, and green fireworks. How I know all this is because I use to help my ex boyfriend cook meth. I've been clean 8 years 2 months and 11 days. All without going to jail. My husband saved my life.
It's also a major component of rat poison years back

I was more amazed by an ER that didnt diagnose Peggy with a "panic attack" and send her home. Then a neurologist figured out Thallium poisoning? Thats the real genius in this story.

I can't remember why I know about thallium poisoning, but as soon as you said poison tests came back negative I had a strong feeling it was thallium poisoning, and when the Mensa portion got to the "perfect crime" game I was sure of it.
I remembered the case from an ID channel program but couldn't remember the name if the poison. But if not mistaken, they way they put it is the guy used the woman sherry as a scapegoat to draw suspicion away from himself even so far as to pretend to want to date her and actually blackmailed her somehow to help him. Not sure but thats what i remember of it.
My mind didn't go to thallium, but I recalled an episode of House where a woman poisoned her husband with gold of all things. So I was wondering if a heavy metal of some kind was involved.

@@random_information7it can be detected everything known to mankind can be detected unless its alien. The problem is doctors in rare cases like this don't even attempt to test for it. Theres probably thousands of diseases that harms a humans. Unless your doctor know the situation u were in they cant properly test for it thats why they read symptoms. Also thats why u need to always be purely honest to doctors in such situations. The gamily got lucky that doctor remembered the teachings as thalium poisoning is so rare the family mostly likly would have died and doctors had run out of possible tests to give family as nobody would be able to connect the dots of thalium to them
I’m really picky about my true crime- there’s a lot of really bad storytelling out there. No inflections, context or creativity … and how the story is presented is so crucial. You are really skilled at that and I appreciate it. This was a great story telling and what a twist at the end! Thanks for these I really enjoy them.
I am constantly amazed how for each and every story you tell, I never know how it is going to end until you get to the climax and reveal it. That is a master-level story telling ability.

The moment you introduced how sherry was super attached to George and Diana I thought that it must have been her who committed the crime but when you revealed that she was the one solving it I was in real astonishment. Wow the way you give voice to these stories is impeccable

I'm Nigerian and one thing we know for sure is to watch and be careful of your neighbors at all times. And make sure your doors are locked and your iron bar protector are locked using more than 1 padlock. In my house we have a gate, a protector for our corridor both front and back before the actual door.

I was accepted into Mensa as a teenager in the 60s. I don't think I've ever encountered such a bunch of losers. They're not geniuses at all, they're just good at IQ tests, which means diddly squat in real life. Exactly. I worked for a guy who was a member of Mensa. He had his office at home so you were in his home alone with him all day. I could write a book on the weirdness. I felt so uncomfortable around him I lasted a few months then got the heck out.

"Smart" is actually not defined properly in American system. American system just evaluates vocabulary and a miniscule set of drab computational skills. When you look at eastern cultures, smart is a compilation of not just academic smartness but also application, innovation, emotional intelligence, social inteeligence, ethical intelligence, abstract thinking, big picture thinking, cross linking various aspects of life and occupations, personal responsibility, sensibility to different cultures, awareness of various perspectives, resourcefulness etc etc etc. I mean there are entire books on just each one of these subjects. In the grand scheme of things she was probs smarter than all of those people who are basically just good test takers.

I found the upside to horrific addiction!! I was mixing heroin and Xanax, A LOT OF IT, was an addict for 12 years straight my entire adult life. Finally got clean for a year and a half now, and apparently I watched a bunch of these videos because I liked them, but have no memory of it 😂 More Mr. Ballen content for MEEE!!! 😂

I broke my neck in 2010 and got addicted to prescribed hydrocodone/oxycodone for a couple years and then in 2012 they started trying to fix the opioid epidemic and so i got pulled off with no warning. I was still in lots of pain and I was dependent, I found heroin within 6 months and struggled with it(and benzos at times and uppers at times) for about the same amount of time. All in all I spent 2010-2021 hopelessly addicted. I’ve been clean for almost 3 years now!
What’s funny though is I spent the first year of my recovery in sober living and I was so miserable, it didn’t matter what I did, I was just bored and craving H(which is to be expected as the brain heals). However it was during that time that I found Mr. Ballen and he provided me with lots super entertaining stories that helped keep me distracted 😂.
Congrats again on your year and a half man! That’s no small achievement! Great job 🙏

If someone tells you they’re feeling like they’re having a heart attack, DO NOT leave them unattended! If you do, it’s more probable that the person will die.
Yeah, if one of my parents said this, I'd take them to the hospital ASAP. Tough doesn't mean invincible. These kids were careless.
@@kathmandoozle yeah that aspect of the story made zero sense to me. As soon as one of my parents said the words “heart attack” I’d be dialing 911 immediately.
And do not let them drive anywhere! If it's a heart attack and they lose consciousness, they can cause an accident and potentially harm or kill themselves and others. Don't even drive them to the hospital. A suspected heart attack always warrants a call to 911 because paramedics can actually start treatment en route and save your life

I agree. It's sometimes hard to tell though, especially in those days. My sweet grandma passed at 42 in 1965 of a massive heart attack that started 2 days prior according to the family story. She just didn't feel good. By the time they got her to the hospital stairs, she passed away at the door. Left behind 5 kids and of course decades later, me :(
Kudos to Susan Gorek! She put her own life in peril only to catch this murderer, and with that, justice has been served to the victims involved because of her work. She will always be known as a brave, smart detective that got the upper hand in this sticky situation.

@@MF-kv8cn To answer your first question, you know once after a crime is commited, the survivors/witnesses etc give dozens of interviews to the police, to the media extra. So the son must have literally told how he discovered his mom in one of these interviews. Someone like mrballen can find all these details by doing enough research on the case.
Also no one is forcing you to watch his content, if you're having so many problems just stop watching

I usually never comment in a video, but i have to come up and say that this is the best storytelling of a murder that i've ever seen. I was nowhere close to the truth the entire time, great video!
The undercover officer, Susan Goreck worked this case for almost a year. She later wrote a book, titled Poison Mind.
I can't fathom how completely terrifying and horrific Peggy's suffering was. It breaks my heart hearing the pain she was in for months on end.
I was quite confused what is going on with her, why is she so resitant to medical treatment? Is it because it is expensive?

As well as the fact that no one knew it was thallium poisoning until it was far too late, there was no way for them to give the correct treatments in time. I remember when this was on the news. It took them 1 minute to describe it. The next door neighbor, who was a Mensa member, got tired of his noisy neighbors, so he left a few cans of poisoned Coke on their doorstep. The family didn't know who left the Coke there, but they took the cans inside and drank them.
It wasn't a group of geniuses, it was one guy. And he wasn't killing for fun, he was upset at the noise level of his neighbors.

My dad was a part of a Mensa chapter growing up, and he ended up leaving. I asked him after watching this episode and the first thing he talked about was the MASSIVE egos that every individual had. I showed him this video and he laughed saying this is no surprise. Their idea of fun isn't typical.
I used to go to chapter meetings which were basically just cocktail parties where the kids could play and the holiday parties with my parents. I did find the newsletter amusing. Especially some of the classifieds back in the late 70s looking for mates. Wild

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven by Dr. Diana Carr’s office and never realized this story was attached to her. I grew up in Sebring, FL… so this story hits home. Literally. It should be noted that Dr. Diana passed away in 2018 from a stroke.

It's far from unprecedented that murderers have been caught simply because they couldn't keep their mouths shut due to their need to boast or confess to someone about what they had done! There's any number of accounts of this type of thing happening on TH-cam.

I've seen of this case before. I thought it was a different one, until I realized more than halfway of the story that it was the same, only told differently. Totally more enjoyable. Great storytelling by the way.
That twist.. wow. I could not see that coming at all and was so confused when the police turned up at the house just after she entered. Masterfully done. You even had me pondering if it was Pye's ex-girlfriend who came back on the scene briefly. I think this is the best story you've told to date.

I suspected the Mensa couple to be murders and Susan to be the one figuring out what they did. He did only say it one time, and the rest of the story he avoided repeating this fact any way, that Susan met the Mensa couple AFTER Peggy already died. :P

This story is proof that being a genius and being smart are not always the same thing. A whole group of geniuses and none of them figured out that she was undercover and she was able to solve "the perfect murder" from within.
All geniuses I met, which were quite of few, because I used to work at a pharmaceutical company, all the one's I met, were totally stupid and acted sort of like children, to put it mildly, there was one chemist that would almost cry literally if you took his parking spot, and I can see that these guy was the same way, he got fixated with those people and killed one of them and almost killed the rest just because he didn't like them...

I remember reading about this case and discussing it with my father, who was a chemist. He said its effects cause a terrible death and anyone who uses it to cause harm should stay in prison until they die.
I'm sure he's right. Mr. Ballen is a warm hearted person, so his descriptions of painful deaths never sound as bad as they really are. I had heard of this case, and two things stood out: the excruciating death of the mother, and the culpability of the murderer's wife, who got off scot free.
I really hope she was innocent, I do actually think that Susan would have found some evidence against her like George if she was part of it too, it's still possible that she knew and obviously then should have been charged too but l hope she's innocent as otherwise it's not right that she's free. Totally sick and cruel to murder someonein this way, the sick fuck George really thought he had the perfect crime. I'm so police officers like Susan exist.

The killer in this case has to be simultaneously one of the smartest and dumbest criminals in history. On one hand, he used a very potent and uncommon poison with vague symptoms that make it difficult to identify. On the other hand, he cooked up a "fictional" scenario that bore an uncanny resemblance to his crime, distributed it to dozens of people, and bragged about his knowledge of poisons to an unusually curious stranger who turned out to be an undercover cop.
I honestly believe its not just stupidity but more so his ego. He felt like his plan was so good it had to be shared and he likely wanted a sort of recognition for it while also not being caught. Someone with a lesser ego would probably avoid mentioning anything at all involving a murder.
