Absolutely he should have a statue, and it should be in DC, and people who see it could read about him on a plaque in front of it. I still can’t believe we’ve never heard of him before now.
Idk about a statue. he didn't cause a movement or massive change, he was an individual that went through a lot of shit in war. i'd say multiple plaques, but not really a statue.
My grandmother was a German nurse during the war and my grandfather was an American soldier. They have an incredible love story, which is about the only good thing to come out of WWII I suppose. 2nd to this guy, what a total badass!
Your grandmother was fighting for the right side... US troops were forbidden to marry German women after the war ((but could marry Japanese women), where consequently 11 million of those women and children were raped by Allied forces. Meanwhile, the greatest crime in human history committed by Jewish Bolsheviks goes unpublished and unpunished!
@@ix3755 My grandmother was a nurse in Germany and my grandfather was an American soldier stationed in a barracks across a small river from her and her crew of workers. They were both freshly 18. Her crew and his crew befriended each other and snuck out to hang out regularly, and my grandfather really liked my grandmother and asked her out on a date three times, to which she firmly said no. My grandmother eventually struck a deal with some friends where she would work on a cargo ship, and every stop they made she got to live somewhere new for a few months. She traveled the world like that, saw so many places and did so many incredible things over the next nearly four years. My grandfather finished his deployment in Germany and came back to the states, where he got stationed in the US in New York. The cargo ship carrying my grandmother was set to finally make its ways to the states and dock for a while in New York. When she got off the boat one of the first people she ran into was him, and he told her “after all these years and all this coincidence of being in the same place together again and you still won’t go on a date with me?” And it made her laugh. They went out together that weekend and have been together ever since. They’ve been married now for 60+ years, have three kids and six grandkids and 3 great grandkids, built businesses, built a home, and achieved all their dreams together. They’re amazing
My grandfather dropped out of Texas A&M and enlisted during WW2 because he was afraid he’d be drafted into the army and he wanted to go into the Air Force. He was a navigator in a B24 Liberator Bomber. He flew 24 missions over Germany while stationed in England. We still have his air force journal where he documented what the target was, flack coverage, altitude, ships lost, mission duration, and temperature. We had it printed into a book of sorts so that we always have it. He was fortunate enough to hear James Stewart speak at a meeting of sorts to discuss an upcoming mission. He had a stutter and a great sense of humor. When going over logistics they were told that a 15% loss of ships was expected. James Stewart (while stuttering) said “Well we just aren’t willing to lose 15% sir.” May God bless our veterans. They have seen things we couldn’t even fathom. 🇺🇸 ❤️
Yeah, it actually makes you believe in real life heros, at least for me personally. After being exposed to all the corruption and apathy in the world, the fact that an entire army or country/state would recognize him because he decides to undertake this enormous selfless endeavor only protagonists in movies are seen doing, it kind of takes your breath away.

Of all Joseph's badassery, him going in and stealing his arrest photo from the POW camp, he just liberated and destroyed, is my favorite bit of, "f@ck you," in his story. What an absolute legend.
I can almost hear him in a voice Ive never heard saying you son's o bitches. This man deserved so much more than he was probably ever given. He deserves to be a name like Patten whenever WW2 is talked about. It's time Hollywood immortalize him in a movie.
My grandfather was a POW in one of the camps. He and a few others dug out and escaped shortly before the war Russians liberated the camp. I wish I knew more about his experience.
I am an amateur WWII historian and after reading about his deeds, I spoke to Mr. Beyrle on the phone on one occasion and we talked for at least 30-40 minutes about what he had done since WWII. He was the only American serviceman to serve in the Soviet Army and when he was recognized by the US for his exploits and heroism, Russia also presented him with four of their military service medals he had earned. I regret having never had the chance to have met him in person.
I had read about Joseph Beyrle around 3 years ago and still couldn't comprehend his insane survival skills. So great to see the story being covered here. I think Mr Ballen could cover Simo Häyhä someday. He has a record of killing over 500 Soviet soldiers as a sniper during the Winter War.
Why isn't this a movie? Him and the German resistance..I don't think many people know about the German resistance either!! This would definitely be an amazing movie!!
@@janinelemonides3705 I know I didn't really until this video and I decided to look into it more. So many incredible stories during this period that rarely get a spotlight like they deserve.
@@janinelemonides3705 Yeah, well, plenty of people in the German military were also not fond of Nazism and, in fact, only 7% of the German population were actual Nazi party members. If you also account for the fact that even some Nazi party members were actually opposed to what the Nazis were doing, such as Schindler, who was officially a member of the Nazi party, it's easy to imagine just how unpopular the Nazis were in the minds of most Germans.
Whenever you see a WW2 vet if they talk about the war they usually recall intense violent combat with a smile and almost like they're telling a story of a prank they did in highschool. Men of that generation were just built better.
no. they weren't built better. they were fighting a "just" war, unlike korea, vietnam, afghanistan, iraq, and all the other stupid wars we've had since 1945.
Im not sure where you got this idea, but this definitely is not the case. PTSD is real now and it was real back then too. It just went by a different name: _shell shock._ Back in high school my entire senior class spoke to WWII vets and every single one of them carried some form of trauma from combat. Multiple kids got chewed out by veterans that day for asking dumbass questions like "how cool was it to kill nazis?" These were men who were forced to kill their fellow man, or risk being killed themselves. These are men who watched their brothers die in front of them. None of them "recalled violent combat with a smile". War is hell dude, and it will psychologically effect even the toughest men.
Yeah, they truly were The Greatest Generation.I think my dad was 17,18 when he went to war,but he would only talk about funny things that happened to him even though he was in combat and wounded in action. Dad never complained, his generation was modest and never shirked their duty. Unlike today you didnt broadcast your achievements telling the world how wonderful you are and whipping out your cell phone every 10 minutes to take a selfie. Well, there were no cell phones back then 🤪
This reminds me of my grandfather. He was in the Norwegian Navy in WW2 and survived a bombing in England. Then went to N Africa and was a POW. Then the ammunition ship that saved him was blown up and he survived in a lifeboat for 7 days. He wrote a book "Jon's Odyssey." It's amazing. He was my favorite person in the world. ❤

My grandmother received the telegram telling her my uncle was killed in 'Nam. He called her a week later. He'd been shot but was alive. He was so awesome. I miss him.
In spite of making it home, I'm sure no one who saw him again would have called him "fine and dandy" after his return, having gone through all of that. That sort of language, even though well-meaning, is actually pretty flippant. He was ALIVE, but make no mistake, he was forever changed. He wasn't the same man who went to war. Even today, soldiers who never see even an hour of combat return from Boot as a completely different person than the one who left. This being so, I'm sure he was as close to being a stranger to his loved ones as I would be by the time he returned. I know what you meant though, and the sentiment you intended to communicate, but one should be clear about such things. I'm sure the nightmares and spontaneous memories haunted him for the rest of his life. To say he was "fine and dandy"? Not an especially appropriate description.
@@marcialavine1272 If you knew what I meant and understood the sentiment then why pick the comment apart like I've said something absolutely offensive and terrible? Honestly, its just not necessary. I wasn't being malicious or rude with what I was saying, I was just appreciating how much of a shock it must have been for the parents who had mourned their son for all that time thinking he was dead. I'm sorry it offended you so much, it wasn't intentional!
@@gleadhill79 You left yourself open to interpretation by the choice of language you used. The fact that I understood your intent doesn't negate the fact that I had a different interpretation of that language. In this day and age when language is very routinely, openly, and intentionally misconstrued and then relayed by strangers to others, it may be of benefit to you to be informed of a correctable weakness in your written speech. The next time you wish to convey your thoughts might actually be of great import that you not be misunderstood, or have your thoughts open to intentional or unintentional misinterpretation. Wouldn't you rather be informed of this now, in a relatively unimportant conversation than when it might actually matter to you? I said your choice of words was flippant, and it was, to one person I know who has been affected by combat and made it home alive. They did not return as "fine and dandy". They thought you should know.

What is the story of your grandparents?

Whenever you see a WW2 vet if they talk about the war they usually recall intense violent combat with a smile and almost like they're telling a story of a prank they did in highschool. Men of that generation were just built better.
Yep.
They certainly were!
no. they weren't built better. they were fighting a "just" war, unlike korea, vietnam, afghanistan, iraq, and all the other stupid wars we've had since 1945.
Im not sure where you got this idea, but this definitely is not the case. PTSD is real now and it was real back then too. It just went by a different name: _shell shock._ Back in high school my entire senior class spoke to WWII vets and every single one of them carried some form of trauma from combat. Multiple kids got chewed out by veterans that day for asking dumbass questions like "how cool was it to kill nazis?"
These were men who were forced to kill their fellow man, or risk being killed themselves.
This reminds me of my grandfather. He was in the Norwegian Navy in WW2 and survived a bombing in England. Then went to N Africa and was a POW.
