A trick with the frog tape for absolutely perfect lines every time is to use a damp sponge or rag to wet the edge of the tape after you apply it to the surface. This pre-activates the paint block tech and seals the edge of the tape prior to applying paint.

If you need that perfect line, use your blue tape or frog tape, then caulk a thin beed over the edge of the tape, smooth off the caulk with a wet finger, paint your line, then pull your tape while the paint and caulk are still wet. Perfect lines on any surface!

Run a damp cloth over fresh tape, let it dry a couple mins, and then put the paint over it. You don't have to use a lot of pressure to rub the tape down. The water activates the adhesive. It works like a charm on heavily textured walls. I like 3m regular blue or frog tape for intricate designs.

Yeah my wife and I painted her mothers whole house and we used both frog and blue tape. I like working with the frog tape more just easier to tear and work with. But we had bleeding underneath as the texture of the wall was an issue so no matter which tape we used good to know would have had same problem. Good to know for future reference to set the edge with a damp cloth from some of the comments so interested to try that next time I have to paint

Hi Jeff, The *real* bullet-proof way to get a crisp edge is to start off, not with gold, but with BLUE at 2:21 over the tapes. When the blue is dry, *then* apply the gold over the blue. All the bleed-through will be blue, ergo invisible. the bleedyness of the tape won't matter _at all_ .

@@EndoExcision The intermediate coat is so thin, that it doesn't take a lot of time to dry. The goal is not to get a great coat - just to fill al the bleed-cracks. PRO Tip: if you paint the edge of the tape, any tape, with the color UNDER the tape, let it dry, and paint the intended color. This allows the same color to bleed under the tape on textured walls. When the new color is applied, that gap has already been filled so the new color cannot bleed through. I'm almost ashamed to say how much I've made with such a simple cheat.

    • @yougetagoldstar
      @yougetagoldstar ปีที่แล้ว +7

Can you explain that a different way? I cant picture that in my mind. (Not experienced with any dynamic painting techniques. Most ive ever done is paint a color on the wall with a roller and brush.)

    • @kpttimes9043
      @kpttimes9043 ปีที่แล้ว +26

Ok. You've painted the wall blue, for example, and you want to paint a gold stripe in the middle. Secure the tape at the lower edge of the stripe you want and another at the upper edge. Paint the wall and overlap into the tape BLUE where you intend to be gold. Let the blue dry, then paint the space between the two strips of paint gold. Let dry and remove the tape. The blue paint added between the tape strips will have 'bleed' under the tape filling the tape under the tape edge. When you paint it gold, there is no room for it to sneak under the tape (tape will always lie to you).
The clear silicon trick works too, however, it does leave a more noticeable lip on the wall.

I've heard many recommend a damp sponge.
They say it softens the paper, activates the glue, and makes it all stick to rougher texture. Then you just wait a few minutes for the water to dry before painting.
They say it works with regular blue painters tape as well.
This is what I would test. I don't like spending time taping unless required. It's counterintuitive to profitability.

I found to get a sharp line is to use the “background” color on top of the tape before applying the “foreground” color. This way the background color bleeds onto the background color and seals the tape from letting the foreground color bleed under the tape.

Video Comment: Consider using manual focus so focus doesn't jump between wall and Jeff. Or, better, if you are using a real lens, shoot at a higher f stop, such as f8 or f11, you will need more light, but, it will keep both the wall and Jeff in better focus - the term is "depth of field" if you want to learn more. Your videos are great - just being critical, if I know you guys, you were pissed as to the focus going out when you were attempting to show the "sharp" lines on the wall. - Just my 2 cents - Keep up the awesome work.

Terrific video. This is one of those iconic TH-cam videos that should be around forever.
I think I can see the marketing strategy of these tapes. It's escalation. "Maybe if you just spend more money on 'better' tape...." When what you really need to do is burnish down the edges of the tape you have. I asked an artist who had really crisp razor sharp lines on some of his paintings how he did it. The top paint that was cut so cleanly was also really thick, like 5 -10mm (nothing you'd ever do in a house). He said it was just masking tape, but burnished down. Of course he might've learned a trick or two that he didn't want to share. (One way of looking at this might be: three stages of skill. I have no clue, hopefully I'm learning and inventing, the second, 'Wow this works great, I'd better keep it a secret,' And the third stage, after you've blurted out the Big Secret to a competitor....and they didn't suddenly catch up to you, take away all your business, etc... help anyone we can ) My friend was an experienced, middle aged artist, who had no limit to his creativity, so I think he would've just told me. I've never felt I've had much success with masking tape. Or like my brother used to say, "Some guys can cut a line, some can't. Tape'll just slow you down."
Burnishing. This applies to everything from hard metals, all the way to clay and probably food prep. You can as you did use your finger tips. There are plastic burnishing tools, Delrin would be a good slippery material. Cheap plastic cutting boards are what I'd always use. There's also the fat tongue depressors. I've sanded the round edge, and for tight areas I've cut a long diagonal and sharpened it. I guess for burnishing inside corners.

Short: Learn to not need tape. Use cheap tape properly, or use Frog Tape green properly for textured surfaces.
    Long:
0:22 Intro to the tapes. e.g. Frog tape, Green good for 21 days and Yellow 60 days.
1:00 Washy, up to 60 days
1:30 Scotch Delicate, Sharp-lines and Regular Blue
    2:15 Cheapo regular yellow
    2:30 Paint time...
2:50 Test clean edge peeling off Paint wet. No clear winner, all bleed, cause is texture and not pressing tape firmly.
4:10 Repeat Test... But pressed tape firmly. Winner: Frog Tape, but close. Lesson is ensure taped firmly pressed before painting.
5:45 Test clean edge peeling off after paint dries. Winner: All but regular yellow and blue.
7:45 TIP: Air seal tapes so adhesive doesn't dry/cure out.
8:20 Test tearing tape place on top of recently dried paint. Winner: Scotch Delicate
10:00 Test clean edge peeling barely pressed tape after paint dried. Winner: Meh, all fail because not pressed firmly.
10:25 Conclusion: Cheap tape works if correctly applied, smooth wall helps. IF you're the kind of person that needs tape, then Green Frog Tape is good for textured.

Definitely not a pro painter here lol but I did two houses on repaints that we lived in and I can say we struggled with good lines (yes, I’m a DIYer that is not practiced enough to cut in without tape…though I’m working on it) using scotch blue tape; there was a lot of sawtoothing when we pulled the tape and it tended to come off in pieces. We also noticed that a home renter prior to us used regular beige masking tape and the stuff was left behind all over the place and adhesive was everywhere when we finally got it all off. It wasn’t until I went finally bought our own house and needed to do all new primer and paint (heavy indoor smokers before us 🤢) that I found Paintlife TV and saw he was all about frogtape… so I said what the heck and used it on our house. I really feel like it actually worked. The trim looks great, adhesive was not left behind, and the tape came off easily without tearing/splintering. Perhaps it was technique (taking it off while the paint is wet as suggested) or the substrate paint/texture as you mentioned, but either way, after our previous struggles with tape, I was happy spending the extra money on frogtape. Just my amateur 2 cents lol

Most homes in the US have pretextured walls so it is impossible to have perfectly smooth walls. The only two options are to try a damp sponge over the tape once it is on the wall, or paint the base color over the tape so the bleed is the same color as under the tape.

My go to painters tape has been Green Frog tape applied with a damp cloth to activate the bond. I’ve used a lot of different types and brands over the years with multiple paint types. When applied properly and usually fairly quick it has protected base boards, created sharp lines, used on art projects on canvas etc. I admit I didn’t read the package about the damp cloth the first time I tried it and suffered from my mistake. Green Frog tape also has multiple widths and the type I the case has given me the best outcome. Worth the money in my opinion and less hassle of having to go back and fix bleeds or drips later.

    Great test.
My #1 use for painters tape is to keep roller splashes/spray off of freshly painted surfaces (at least a couple days dried) either directly applied or used to hold plastic sheets. I want it to adhere, but not so much that it damages the fresh paint. It appears that most will work just fine and no need to spend a ton of money. I do not trust basic masking tape, as there are so many variants and levels of quality. I'll stick to basic "blue".

This is excellent stuff. Very useful. The only problem I had with it is that I was always taught to paint in the same direction the tape was going in whenever possible. But that was in an art class, so I'm not sure whether that's relevant here or not. 😊

@@HomeRenoVisionDIYdo another test to see if painting in the same direction helps. If so, show us the video. I would think you would still have some bleeding unless you really press the edges. You could also try the wet sponge or cloth to see if that works or makes a difference without having to press really hard. You could also do the double paint, but leave it on a whole day to see how much damage the tape causes on fresh paint. Some people paint and come back the next day to pull tape.
See, that is a whole new video. 😊 I love your channel! I watch most of your videos as soon as they come out.

For people trying to get ultra crisp lines. I've seen videos before where they put the tape on, then paint the wall with the same color that's underneath the tape. Let it dry then go over with your accent color. That way any bleed through you get is the same color as underneath Don't know how that would go but I've seen several people do it

what happens when your wall is not flat and is like pineapple skin skin coat.

I have tried to do stripes with that paint type and it is not fun.

Yellow frog tape is essential on surfaces that have been painted within the last couple weeks or so. Green grips too hard and will peel the paint. Same for stained surfaces like delicate cabinetry, gotta go yellow on that.
I use blue frog tape on the floor and carpet (it’s cheap and sticks the most of the three), yellow on delicate surfaces, and green everywhere else.

For that I will mask all my trims with a frogtape ( wet the edges ) and paint my walls. But I need to apply a second coat next day. Is it OK to remove the frogtape after second coat, or I should to put the tape twice? Thanks

Jeff maybe you dont know... But from what i heard from painters you should apply the tape and then paint with the base color over it and only then paint with the second color. Thats how you should get straight lines :) but never tried it myself

A quick trick to get clean lines. Apply a thin bead of painters caulking (clear or white) along the edge of the tape your painting. Then wipe off all the excess caulking. Then while caulking and paint is still wet pull the tape you will get sharp lines even on mildly bumpy surfaces.

    • @desiterry2647
      @desiterry2647 ปีที่แล้ว

This is exactly what I do, but I thin the caulk out with some rubbing alcohol and apply with a small brush. It thins it out enough that you can still pull the tape when the paint is dry.

Great video! Weird thing here is that, as a Pro painter, I use almost green tape exclusively and its flawless. The first thing I do is throw the plastic container away- I don't have time to be messing with plastic containers! I've actually stepped away from the yellow tape because it never gave as consistent results compared to the green tape. For me green tape is the way to go!

If it textured surface you got to run a bed of caulking to seal.
Also try pulling the tape off at a Angle.
Pull tape off while caulker still wet.

I just finished painting two rooms and three pieces of furniture in my house just hours ago and I happened to see this video. Fan of the channel! I think the demonstration is poor example of how most people us painters tape. In the rooms I was painting I taped off stucco ceiling and trim, I used frog tape, ran out and used basic green painters tape. The frog tape out preformed the painters tape so much so that I don't think I will use basic painters tape again. In the past I have used painters tape and had issues with it bonding with dusty stucco, the frog tape stuck instantly. The painters tape was constantly tearing, frog tape never ripped. I could secure the frog tape to a small section of the wall and run the tape 10 -12 feet without it breaking, something I couldn't do without the painters tape. If I am spending $150-$200 on paint, I might as well spend an extra $5 on a superior product.
    Just my 2 cents.

I bought a 6" by 2 foot riser pipe for $9 to toss in my toolbox as a tape roll protector. I used some extra to make a trash bag holder.
Next step is to make a base to hold both, cut a slot down the tape tube for access after reinforcement. When I'm done I want the trash roll to stay, but the tape tube to pull out as needed!
I could have spent 25 on the packout tape holder and gone external, but it doesn't protect the tape at all.

I am wondering if the paint film has a textured knap to it ( not perfectly smooth, and the tape is riding a bit over the top of this knap allowing. This would cause the tape to not be perfectly bonded to all surfaces, allowing for very small places for the tape to bleed under.
Try this test over a piece of glass!!!!

I assume these are Canadian prices. In the US the yellow and green frog tapes usually cost the same.

We had to buy the frog yellow tape (less glue) because every other tape would rip off decades of old paint off the wall because owners like 40 years ago didn't properly adhere a layer and the tape would pull off about 5 paint layers.

Either paint under tape line with color of top coat or run a VERY thin coat of paintable caulk over tape edge. Let dry, paint and remove when not wet but not dry at a 90 degree angle as you pull the tape. Tape cuts the micro thin caulk.

I was painting an Aquarium Stand, entire Stand was Painted with Gloss White Rustoleum Topside Paint, an oil based paint. Let it dry for a Week. Taped off the Stand with Green Frog Tape. So I could paint the outside with Krylon Satin Black. Not only did it bleed, put it took the Topside paint off in places. Was really disappointed in the results. Went over the edges with the Topside to correct, no tape used.
