      His pacing with his editing is great... As soon as I start to feel like he's showing too much detail or talking a little too much about something the pace speeds up.... Like the first set of tape peels started to feel kinda long and then he sped it up some, then those started to feel kinda long then he went to turbo peeling... I've noticed this in all his videos I've seen, some of the best editing on TH-cam...

    As a professional woodworker I have always used Duck Clean... It peels off easy, doesn't stick to the tape roll over time, typically doesn't tear when peeling from the roll, and is priced very competitively. I always thought the much more expensive Frog tape was a marketing trick and you have proved me completely wrong. I will definitely be using that for any paint lines I have to accomplish and keep using Duck Clean for the non-paint essentials. Thank you for the information - it's incredibly valuable. It also looks like you could maybe apply caulking to any of the tapes and they would all be pretty much perfect. Not sure if that would save you much tho.

    • @dennisgarber
      @dennisgarber 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@comicalhexical Well, the caulking helped the frog tape. My guess is that it is risky, as I have spent most my Saturdays repairing the wall to perfection where pulling the tape also pulled parts of the paint off the wall. Seems to happen more for the professional series of paints that are more rubbery. He does not mention grade of caulking he used. I think I tried the caulk trick only once, but still had bleed onto baseboard. Probably will try it again.

I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to drill into some brick with some cheap masonry bits I purchased from Amazon and figured it must be some super strong brick materiel (the bits had tungsten carbide ends after all!). FInally gave in and bought a nice Bosch bit from Home Depot and it cut through like butter. A 15 pack of bits for $17.99 isn't any better of a value vs 1 bit for $8.99 when all 15 bits are garbage.

      This is not how to use masking tape. You first paint with the background color on top of the tape, to fill any gaps. The when it is tacky, you paint with the other color. That way you always get a perfect line. Only applications when you can't do that, like on a not previous painted surface, or on car, the better tape is relevant.

    Frog Tape is one of those products I took a long time to buy because I thought it had to be marketing bullshit and it's relatively expensive but my experience with it matches this, it's excellent. If you really need a clean line then it's worth the cost.
    I use the yellow type though, I think it has less adhesive than this green type.

    It would be interesting to see the difference in different types of electrical crimps/plugs/solder combinations and how they hold up to harsh weather and vibration. I'm thinking for either car audio or something more practical like trailer wiring which always seems to need redone often when road salt is around.
    That being said this video was a real eye opener, i didn't expect any difference between brands so I've always stuck to the cheap stuff. Frog was never a brand I had considered before, but I'll definitely be seeking it out now.

It seems like one of those things where people in a certain industry coalesce around similar opinions but then you check another industry and it's completely different. • @EddieTheGrouch
      @EddieTheGrouch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A test like this could be a can of worms without resistance and load tests. Let's use automotive for example. To reduce costs and weight, auto mfrs have taken the load to wire size ratio to the limit. Older cars had a big honking wire from the alternator to power stuff and charge the battery. Repairing a terminal with solder worked because the heavy wire stayed cool and there was a lot of surface area for the solder. Newer cars use a much smaller wire and higher current alternators and that wire runs HOT right from the factory. A soldered connection would be weak due to inherent heat and additional heat from a higher resistance joint and fail under load. With a soldered connection, the wire and terminal has to be upsized to cope. Copper wire relaxes over time allowing crimped connections to loosen increasing resistance, heat, and letting corrosion seep between the strands and the terminal. It's worse with solid wire which is why it's not crimped but uses a screw terminal which must be re-tightened periodically. Then there is weatherproofing which can get a bit tricky due to many variables folks don't think of. My concern is that tests done with speaker wire would take the results as Gospel and apply it to connections that would fail and cause fires, damage, or injury.

    Put up the masking, and what ever the base paint is, paint a strip along the edge of the tape with that paint first.
    That will bleed under the tape.
    Then use the contrasting color as normal.
    When the tape is removed, the color that bled under is the same paint that is supposed to be there.

    Frog tape has been my go to since it came out, always near perfect lines. However, I've found that even as good as it is, it struggles with the newer latex paint with primer in satin, semi-gloss, gloss and high gloss applied to similarly glossy surfaces. If left on too long I've found that even it peels up the newer paint. Highly recommend removing, very carefully, prior to paint drying!

      The trick to that is to paint a thin coat of primer over the frog tape edge first. Some people even just brush some water over it instead. This activates the tape. Then paint the color you want and peel off while the paint is still tacky. If you use sherwin williams duration or emerald, one coat over primer is enough to cover almost anything.

    This was great!!!!!!! I watched your video before a big painting project which involved several shades next to each other.. Now my wife is very particular with straight lines and bleed through and we don’t paint that often so we went with the big money Frog tape. We usually use a 3m product but took your suggestion. It was so worth it, your video saved a lot of arguments and perhaps a marriage . THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU...

    Frog yellow masking tape is incomparable for absolutely clean lines and delicate surfaces. Better even than green Frog tape.
