    Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you enjoy this first start of the 1972 914 Type 4 Engine. My buddy Darrin rebuilt this engine for me. Check it out and let me know what you think.

    NICE! If I were you, I would put this engine needs to go into the Ghia and scrap that UGLY 914! The Ghis motor will find a home eventually. Do a nice oval window or even a split window. The Ghia DESERVES this engine and it would be FUN! Be safe, stay healthy and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Happy New Year CT, Cool to see the 914 type 4 running. Darrin will have it smokeless soon like he said. Just some minor stuff to fix. It runs great. I see now why your skipping around a bit. Just don't go get anything else and tear completely apart till you make forward progress on what you have. Putting on new brakes on the 914 and doing a test drive with the new engine won't take that long and it is making progress on your current projects👍

    Just a thought, CT, run it by Darin first. Finish the Ghia and put that T4 in it, then have Darin build a 2.2L or 3.0L flat 6 Porsche engine for the 914, for when you restore it. Of course that means adding the appropriate bracing, suspension, and 914-6 wiring loom, but then you’ll have a 914-6 tribute. You could also change your mind when the 914 is done, and put the 6 in the Ghia, and the 1.7 back in the 914, at the end.
    Just some food for thought.

  • @jarmstrong2843
    @jarmstrong2843 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video brings back memories of my 914-6. It was a temperamental critter. But when it ran good, it ran real good.
    Rust in engine bay seems to be a common problem with the 914. Body panels around the edges prone to rust too. Electrical issues too frequent. The German car uses those little funky fuses that will blow if you looked at them wrong. Rust a problem in front trunk on the floor, the hidden head light can be temperamental. Car is great going around corners.

    Awesome my first car my dad bought us as kids was 1959 Dune buggy with fiberglass body, short pan original 36hp 6 volt, built several engines after learning how to work on that car as a kid. That dune buggy had a box of parts that came with it, I remember looking up the parts, in the box I found some Okrasa intake manifolds, but the heads didn't come with dune buggy when we bought it....

    My 914 used to run that smooth, but ever since I accidentally hit 2nd instead of 4th at full RPM, she’s never run smooth since. I don’t have the time or funds to fix it right now. So my advice for you, CT, from that lesson is; when you get to restoring the 914, be damn sure to get the transmission and linkage, spot on, possibly upgrade to the 915 transmission instead of the 901 they came with, or at least go with the side shift 901. Thanks for some 914 content. Congratulations on the motor. Tell Darin, a fan says hi, and thanks for saving and making a stock 1.7 T4 live again.
    Happy New Year!

      A bent valve or broken valve spring, no big deal

    • @vwfanatic2390
      @vwfanatic2390 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gtbarnes11 if I had the wherewithal to take the engine out, you’re right, it would be “no big deal”, but I have no place to do that work, not enough money to rent a place to do that work, if I could even find a place to rent to do the work, and I don’t have the tools or specific knowledge to do the work myself, so I’d be paying someone to do it for me, and where I live that ain’t cheep, so for me, it actually a bit of a big deal. Would not have happened, had I addressed the transmission linkage issues ahead of time, and had I not lapsed in attention in that moment of shifting.

    And YES keep Rusty, rusty, not rust free. Just make solid running gear, fix the holes from behind with rust colored patches for water tightness, then clear coat or semigloss vinyl wrap, to keep the rust from spreading and protect the patina.

    • @frankschwartz7405
      @frankschwartz7405 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, pour some acid on it, maybe shoot some holes in it, Hell, hit it with a couple 12ga shotgun blasts, then take it out and crash it into some junked cars, maybe roll it over a couple of times. Break a couple of the windows. Give it some "history". Then rub it with linseed oil.
      No such thing as too much freakin "patina".

      Way too much smoke for a rebuild, even using break in oil. I must assume the heads were done, eliminating valve guides as a culprit, so one or more rings is misaligned/broken in one or more of the new jugs. Way too much smoke.

    I had a 2 litre with a mild cam, big valve heads and dual 44mm IDF webers in my bus for several years. The engine ran well and gave me decent service over 60k+ miles. There were two characteristics that I hated about that motor though: In my view, the pistons/chambers were too large and the fuel never fully burned on every cycle, and you could never get the mixture perfect with those carbs. I remember reading writings by Gene Berg who said that the internal passages of those carbs were not drilled right for the type 4 motor and I found he was right. I should have bought a set of Berg DCN carbs for it, but they didn't look as sexy as the IDF's. Looks like this crew is having the same issue. This motor is too young to smoke like that. Assuming that is not oil smoke, the mixture is all wrong and that is tons of wasted fuel.

    Shouldn't there be some kind of pin or bolt thru the holes in that engine frame pivot?

      Heater boxes with no box :)

      That's correct! =) The box was rusted real bad and had tons of dirt and oil packed in them.

    I hope you turn the exhaust around when you turn the linkage around. It'll be tough to fit that in the car with the exhaust facing forward.

    That thing runs like a sewing machine! Nice job guys. Question. Are you guys running a light 2-stroke mix here? Looks a little smoky. Or is that just because the piston rings need to bed in with the cylinder walls? I'd love to get the engine out of my project K20 suburban and rebuild it. or my project K10 pickup, Interestingly my 57 chevy is the only project that really doesn't need a rebuild, lol.
