MSR Voyager ADV Gear Rain Test + I Bought a Honda CB500X

  • The all new MSR Voyager adventure motorcycle jacket and pants may just be the best entry level adventure motorcycle gear for beginners and experienced riders alike. This waterproof ADV gear is a fantastic value at a rock bottom price, and I am very impressed with the build quality and overall looks of the set.
Check this waterproof adventure motorcycle gear out for yourself on the @rmatvmc website:

    MSR Voyager Pants: bit.ly/3UgGikj
MSR ADV Cold Weather Gloves: bit.ly/3jsKhfx

    MSR Dual Sport/ADV Socks: bit.ly/3lbjHZa
    MSR Adventure Boots: bit.ly/3nVkkal
However, I'm not just going to take Rocky Mountain ATV's word on the waterproofing of this gear. Before I can do a full MSR Voyager Gear review, I have to get out and test it. Today, we're testing the waterproofing of this MSR Voyager motorcycle gear by riding for two hours in the pouring rain, through puddles and getting splashed by oncoming traffic on the highway.
How did the MSR Voyager Pants and MSR Voyager Jacket hold up? I was VERY impressed with this waterproof ADV Gear. Without a liner made of Gore-Tex or similar material, I honestly did not expect the jacket to actually keep me dry, but both the jacket and the pants performed amazingly on this day.

Im a Tig/Mig welder for the oil industry. I weld 10 hours a day in extreme heat inside and out. Throughout my year it feels like I'm always running one of the hottest jobs imaginable.
I bought the MSR Explorer set because of your videos (which are fantastic btw). Im very fit and very used to heat I cant wait to find out if the explorer stuff will be too hot for me in the dead of summer. My uniform is long sleeves no vents as well so I feel like I should be fine but, Ill report back to you if ya like.
    Thanks for reviewing this stuff

Love, love that your doing more cb500x content. I think you should keep it. Very popular bike and hard to find. It sits right where a lot of beginners should be getting into the sport and is a damn fine bike. The gear looks awesome and probably perfect for those of us in the PNW!

I know it's the Explorer gear, but I ended up getting caught in a snow storm when I wasn't expecting this spring. Ended up being on my sportbike, and the low chance of rain became a guarantee and then snow was a chance. The gear did fantastic. Thank you to you and Big Rock Moto for the great reviews. Ended up getting mine while RMC had their March sale.

The best rain gear by far is military issue gortex. Couldn’t beat the price when it was issued to us, but even buying it is reasonable. Had nothing but the bike for over a year in western Washington, and never got wet. Light weight and warm enough on the winter and cool enough in the summer.

Test number 2. Go outside with full gear. Give bride water hose. Soak the dork for 1/2 hour. Remove gear and check for wetness. Give review and then proceed to secret well known camping spot close by. Cook us a nice dinner. Light up my puff puff then proceed,to give words of wisdom. Respectfully secret viewer. PS: No Bud only Coors light allowed in camp! Remember to be kind to me. Ok everyone I get it.

I'm excited for the CB500x content. I'm considering buying one for my general adventure riding. I currently have a crf450rl for hardcore dirt, but it's not great on the highway to ride to the dirt. I had a 2021 Africa Twin base model and I loved it but I really didn't want to have to do the valve job on it and also didn't want to drop it. I did have fun with it on the dirt though. I'm considering buying a 500x for the cheaper price and still having the parallel twin and being ok offroad. It's either that or I gotta get another AT in a couple years and just accept that it's gonna get dropped and the valve jobs are gonna suck. lol

It's nice having a CycleGear store ten minutes away, I have the Sedici Avventura (not Explorer) riding gear, have ridden in the rain and snow as well as warmer dry weather, it's been great, has two zip-in liners, one quilted for warmth and another for water & wind resistance. Has the chest vents, arm vents, pockets and the padding in all the right places, plus the pants zip to the jacket as it should. This MSR stuff looks comparable to the Sedici, definately worth a look, plus I really like RockyMountainATV!

I rode my CB500X yesterday. I love that bike. Looks like you need a pinlock, brother. I’m interested in the MSR stuff. I’m a big American guy, so I need gear cut for big guys. I hated the stock pegs on the 500X. I swapped to Knight Design, LLC pegs, which move the pegs down and forward, making it way easier to stand. Great video!

Great review as always, thank you, Ben! I bought the MSR Adventure boots (black) you demo'd here, been riding with them about two months now. Loved them out of box and after 20+ rides, they are really a fantastic value. My wife and I are returning riders (rode many years ago) and I tried several pairs of very expensive moto boots - and almost had a serious accident (actually more than one). Yes, I understand about protection and importance of stiffness - but I am wondering how many others have experienced the same issue. With the incredibly stiff moto boots, sure, you feel safe, but I stalled on a dangerous portion of a hill because I could NOT downshift because of the stiffness of the boots. The pair I bought even had the 'hinge' - but seriously, why be fully armored if you are going to die because you can't properly control your bike. So my strategy was to stay with the MSR boots you've demo'd here for a good while, while we are getting our confidence back with light off-road (forest roads) only. I'm thinking even BDRs would be fine, and just avoid the highest technical. But all of the youtube vloggers in adventure moto seem to say the same thing about leg protection and importance of these incredibly stiff motocross boots and I'm wondering if we aren't setting up newer riders for serious accidents. Even after shifter adjustment, getting proper flex to shift and brake frankly is just friggen DANGEROUS. Go with these MSR boots, they are terrific value, super comfortable, and I can walk to get the espresso just fine after a ride :D

If you want to stay warm and dry Aerositch Darien gear is the best we just did the PA BDR Wild X and it rained all 4 days and if we got 3 hrs of no rain that was given the no rain the benefit of the doubt.
100% dry at the end of each day but you get what you pay for. After 50 years of riding I got tired of the broken promises of gear is waterproof and gave my money to Aerostich and got gear made to fit me and it's 100% waterproof and no broken promises.
My last jacket that did well was my firstgear TPG first gen and I got just over 100k miles out of that. I'm hoping to get the last years of riding out of my Stich....
Trust me when I say their is no good cheap good riding gear After 50 years of riding I found out the hard way..

So is the sizing true? Because I went to a cycle gear store an hr away and tried on several jackets. I found that in one brand a 2x was plenty. Another brand I was barely able to squeeze into a 5x. I wear a 42 in the waist and thats measuring at the navel. And I have a 50 inch chest. So gear is hard to come by for me

I suspect the waterproof coating will eventually wear off and will require a DWR treatment to keep it waterproof or at least water resistant. Still a reasonable value though.

$450 for entry level. I feel like inflation is out of control. Ill stick with my viking rain gear for $100. Thank you for the review targeted towards dentists on GSes. Is that the plural form of GS?

    That bash plate looks bulky
Whole thing looks way to heavy for me but whatever floats your boat
Would like to see a more minimalist approached as I’m looking at this and the new Vstrom 800de

Do you use anything on your helmet visor to help water bead and fly off? I always have such a hard time seeing once it starts raining.

I was in the impression it was impossible to buy a 00x unless it was brand new. You can't find them on the second hand market without traveling half way across the west
