Unified UI experience is a great feature, especially for those of us who use multiple units. I have a small computer I use for track/TT/crits and a larger one for commuting/road rides and it's super nice to have them use the same layout.

I must say I am super impressed with Garmin - for such an extensive additional feature set they could have just released 1040, but no - they made all the 1030 users a gift! Kudos to Garmin, this is exemplary behavior and would be great to see it with other cycling tech suppliers as well. Ah, since 7.85 (beta), the issues with LiveTrack are also gone, so I think it is worth mentioning that some bug fixing took place as well.
I watched this video to confirm the display on my newly purchased 1030 is not a dud. They are all duds! Hopefully its better outside. Everything else is good though.
The newer Garmin Edge have a new display screen with "sunlight readable TFT" the standard TFT on most ebike displays look black in full sunlight.. I'm wondering if the "sunlight readable TFT" would be made better with an "Anti-Glare" screen protector.. or if it would make it worse in those situations..?
I have had issues with updating maps from Gamin express. For some reason the maps update removed the maps from the 1030. So sent it back to the shop. They were fantastic and replaced the unit. Will not try that map update again. However the update up to 8.00 worded fine.
Shane, given the latest updates, and that the 830/1030 are at about the same price, would you buy a 1030 over the 830 for the added screen real estate or get an 830 for the quicker screen navigation?
Heads up. You may need to reestablish some of your setups after the upgrade. I needed to update my Di2 wireless button controls and my light network. All easy - I just wasn’t expecting it and had to scramble ahead of a group ride.
if someone steals your bike, they would take off the Garmin if it started beeping (alarm) and toss it.. This feature might help you find your $600 1030, but thieves know to remove the GPS tracking Garmin that is beeping and sending alarms out..
@@gplama I have seen the GPS tracker that is the same diameter of the seat tube. Simply take the post out and it drops down into the seat tube. Many stolen bikes have been recovered because the GPS unit is always sending out the signal.. It connects to an app on your phone/computer..They have tracked stolen bikes to shipping containers that were on their way to another place..
This unit is must buy if you are MTB rider. It's faster then edge 820 and have WORKING GPS not like edge 830. I know they (Garmin) are trying to fix GPS str. on 830 but i think that is hardware problem and can not be fixed by any software update.
When in INDOOR mode, the GPS will be disabled & firmware will subsequently show v.0.0. Enable GPS by using another mode such as ROAD (per this video) and then GPS will initialize and show actual version info. Nothing to do with "Bike Alarm" as suggested.

How about utilizing the coding they use in the car models.. and putting voice (audible) turn-by-turn directions via the Bluetooth Pairing on the GPS/Phone to a Bluetooth speaker (ie: JBL flip)... That way you get the added safety feature of the Audible navigation, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road when coming up to and through the turn.. Safety needs to be Garmin's first priority. ie: voice: "turn left in 200 feet" "turn right in 2 miles" "you are arriving at the destination on left"..... The coding has already been done, the EDGE already has the Bluetooth pairing..So why don't they make this happen..? If i could put a car GPS into bicycle mode with Garmin cycling MAPS, i would certainly put it on my bicycle. Larger screen and audible navigation.. a 12v USB power source would make it last a long time..
Since the update the route profile screen is jagged and not smoothly as before. Also loses connection to my iPhone but it could also be the iOS update that have come out.
Hi Shane, do you know why the Edge 1030 loses connection with the phone all the time. I have this every time I'm out riding. Sometimes phone and Garmin never reconnect. This even happens when the phone "Samsung s9" and the Garmin 1030 are lying next to each other.
I don't know of a way to make this work directly. The alarm will trigger a notification on the mobile app... which you could maybe have shown on the watch as a notification. Just a guess without having tested this setup myself.
Too late for me. I skipped the 1030 as I didn’t see it value in replacing a working 1000 and got an 830 when that came out. Gave up some screen space for some MTB features I guess. Probably save a lil cash to boot.

Looks like it’s not globally available yet however. My APAC unit is on 7.5, stubbornly so. Anyway, no climbs in Singapore and I’m not riding any trails so I can still wait a bit. 😀
Anyone having issues after the update - Climb Pro wont display climbs on any Course that has been created since update . All settings are on for climb pro. Older courses created have climbs available and work on a ride. newly created courses traversing a few previously known hilly roads do not show climb pro now. I’ve used map creation with Garmin connect and App called Easy Route. Neither creates a course that contains climb pro, when previously they did...gpx files - it’s the only file connect accepts on mobile phone. Thanks.
Shane using the 1030 with the Varia Radar. Did an Edge reset after manually updating. The radar pairs ok as a radar but previously it also paired as a light and in the dropdown there was a page where the light modes could be selected. In system settings under widget management you can enable a page for "Light" but when opening it says light disconnected. In FW 8.00 are you still seeing the radar with a dropdown menu on the 1030 to control the it?

What would the battle be? In core features they're one and the same - Sensor recording, GPS, etc. In number of features the Edge has the upperhand. In ease of use and not being Garmin, the Wahoo is clearly in front. :)
I’m thinking day to day use, GPS routing, battery life, usability, reliability, if I want to do a navigated loooong Ride which is the better unit. I think a lot of the Garmin functions look a bit of a gimmick 👍🏽

@@hunters641 Unpair your phone. Remove the Edge from all Bluetooth profiles/connections. If you have time - do a hard reset of the Edge 1000. Then set it up from scratch.

how did you change pages without touching the screen?
It’s best to update firmware and GPS through Garmin Express. As you found out, gps firmware updates don’t go well through WiFi.

Some good additions however I am still losing 10 miles distance out of 30 even though the gps is correct

Try the USB method with Garmin Express on Mac or PC. Also make sure there’s enough space free on the Garmin.

Bonus, I've never connected this to USB and it's now updating my maps to the latest version.
The device suffers from poor to non existent Bluetooth connectivity and drop outs.
