    I upgraded from the 830 to the 1030 plus just for the screen. I love the size. However, man, this thing is buggy. I’m on my second unit as the first one was replaced by garmin (good support experience) for repeatedly freezing my location on the map during navigation when I pass under a specific tunnel. Unfortunately, My second unit still freezes occasionally in the one spot. Secondly, IT DOES NOT DO STRAVA LIVE SEGMENTS RELIABLY,

    I disagree with the part regarding micro usb. If you want your device to last and use it for a long time it is super annoying to get new products that don't switch to USB C.

    • @ImDobbsy
      @ImDobbsy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      100% this! Plus micro usb is significantly more fragile than usbc. I've killed many a charge port on Garmin's and phones with micro usbs inability to resist flexing.

      Isn't Micro USB the euro standard on phones because of a law European Commission passed? That is probably why Europe has been slow to adapt Type C... however I think lawmakers want Type C on everything going forward, so that may change.

      @@parthmache4733 There's is NO such thing as "future proofing". Especially when it comes to USB formats. There have been EIGHT different kinds already (A, B, C, Micro A, Micro B, Mini 5-pin, Mini 4-pin, and 3.0). In another year or so, you'll be telling us that D is so much better than C and "future proof".

    Uhhh... Micro USB needs to go away. USB C is more than a form factor difference. Anything that "takes a few minutes" should take seconds over USB C. Also charging gets a significant time boost and there's no guessing on what way to plug in a device. I probably won't upgrade until Garmin devices change to USB C.

    • @backpacker3421
      @backpacker3421 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just a charging cable. Data runs over wifi with this device. And if you really have to guess how to plug in a micro-USB, you need some help. It's flat on one side and rounded on the other. Try lining up the flat sides...

    • @ChrisMcQueen
      @ChrisMcQueen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@backpacker3421 sometimes, when someone loves something very much, they have strong feelings about things. I'll be okay. You'll be okay. This will all be okay. If you don't have strong feelings about USB C, that's fine. But, I'm at a point where the vast majority of my devices are on USB C and I'm seeing a future where I will only need one type of power/data cable and I think it's a very cool thing. Thanks for trying to help or solve my issues. You can't. But, I do hope Garmin hears folks and finds a way to make USB C happen on their devices soon.

The total number of times you need to run data over it is almost zero. So if you really want to stick with your old computer because of the shape of the charging cable, don't let me stop you. I have had the Garmin 820 Edge for a few years now and was pretty happy with it but the battery life seems to be dwindling. I’ve also had an issue with it automatically syncing to my iPhone with Garmin Connect after I did a software update a while back. I have to turn the computer off and back on when I get for the ride to upload through my WiFi. My question is, should I upgrade to the 1030 plus or 830 plus? Is it worth the investment or should I wait until my 820 edge battery is just completely worn out and then upgrade?

    Jack what happened to the 1030 as shown at 3:08? ... I'm going to keep yelling from the mountain tops and this illustrates it perfectly, Garmin needs to fix their screen durability issues, the glass that is used on all of the 30 series edge units doesn't survive even the smallest crash. I love my 830, navigation is normally great (only wish there was an option to reverse a route), metrics galore, and battery life is epic; but on my 3rd unit!

    What is the maximum data windows that can be displayed at the same time when one is viewing the map screen? I know that on the Garmin 830 it's two. Others have indicated to me that it doesn't matter because it's easy to scroll between the pure data pages and the map but, still, I'd like to know if the 1030 has more data that can be viewed with the map screen than does the 830.

I can't see the explore because it's too small.. I can see the 1030 plus, but who (other than a pro cyclist) needs all that clutter that make is too complicated to operate..
    The best would be if you could put the Garmin cycling maps on the Garmin motorcycle size screen... But they are not interchangeable maps.. LOL Someone with influence needs to talk to the design team at Garmin and ask for the "handicap accessible" version of the 1030..LOL Thanks.

      The entire point of structured workouts is to limit your rest and ride the full interval. If you're doing your 'structured' workout in an area where lights and other obstructions wreck the 'structure' it's not really having the same effect and you can still manually pause anyway.

      @@psycheout4733 I'm not a professional athlete. I live in a fairly densely populated area. I'm not riding a trainer year round. Auto pause doesn't need to be set to default, but to not give the option for auto-pause is an oversight. At this point, I'll just buy a Wahoo next as their head units have that feature.

      @@savonaaaron Again, you don't understand the meaning of structured training then. I've lived in Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco... all 'densely populated areas' and it really only takes a 30 min warmup (or less drive) to find a place where you can do your intervals. Especially now, nearly all commercial areas are empty. Copping out to "not a professional athlete" assumes most people are? ... Just press stop since you can't be bothered to find an area where you're not interrupted by traffic. Notice you have no likes? Because it defeats the purpose of structured training.

    The higher capacity 32 GB (to 16 GB of the original 1030) doesn't compensate for the missing microSD card slot on the 1030 plus. That's a very bad decision by Garmin to the "improved" 1030 plus. On the original 1030 you could even add microSD cards with 32 GB (without any firmware on it for maps only - with formating FAT32 even larger microSD cards). When the processor is faster the microSD slot would have been even better. I really don't understand Garmin's decision because other devices (handheld outdoor GPS) still use this microSD card slot! 🤔

    I can never understand why they don't include the buttons that the 530 has *in addition to* the touch screen. Like, it's their flagship device, far and away the most expensive one most people would be willing to buy, and where I live, there are significant chunks of the year when you can't use it normally/conveniently. I guess adding buttons is like admitting that the touch screen on its own doesn't cover every need and thus is not as premium a feature as it appears to be on the surface. But the fact that smartphones are purely touch-operated and that one can't use them with big gloves or in the rain/snow is one of the major arguments for switching to a dedicated computer (I also just hate trying to use a touch screen on my handlebars while I'm moving, particularly if it's bumpy, but that's a personal thing). All in all then, it doesn't make sense to me to manufacture a computer that is essentially operated exactly like a smartphone (and more clunkily, at that). Now to be fair, buttons by themselves come with their own drawbacks too. I would love to see Garmin go the Karoo or Sigma route and make a device that is both touch- and button-operated. It seems like it would be so easy for them to implement and then most/all conceivable conditions of use would be covered. I could probably ignore all the other weird UI, software and hardware choices Garmin makes, and would buy the 830 or 1030 this very second if only they also had buttons.

    After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.
