      Edge 530, so this is not a worthwhile upgrade - particularly as they have chosen not to future-proof it by neglecting to give it USB-C. The re-routing upgrade will be welcome - whenever Garmin see fit to release the new firmware. The current re-routing on the Edge 530 is not fit for purpose.

      @@wiggle ...I'm returning my Wahoo Roam...lol...and ordered the 1030 plus instead...the ROAM to me feels just a bit behind and for a few extra bucks more you get, at least IMHO, a better device in garmin with more features...If I'm going to invest in bike equipment, I might as well spend the extra cash and get something that doesn't already feel behind other similar devices...that's my opinion, anyhow :)

    Very good review. Thank you. I missed 1 aspect and that is the question if the Garmin 1030 plus is worth it, considering the heavy price tag. I own a 1030 and I really like it. I don't see much need to upgrade to the 1030 plus. I think that the 1030 plus will the last unit in this design. I hope for a thinner unit with a bigger screen at a smaller size for the new flagship model in the future. People that own the edge 1000 or older model could take the leap. The 1030 plus will be a great upgrade in battery life and overall performance/features.

    • @wiggle
      @wiggle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Barts 👍 to be honest upgrading from the 1030 probably isn't worth it as it's still a decent unit. I think you're right this being the last to keep the same design as it's pretty huge (and heavy). We would love to see the Garmin Power glass used on the next "big screen" bike computer from Garmin. Thanks for the comment 👍

    Couldnt keep my eye off that spacer stack 😂 but apart from that great review. Just got one, switching from an Elemnt Roam. Can already tell I‘m way more pleased with the GPS accuracy on the Garmin. I started Graveling and MTB again in addition to road and the Elemnt was bugging me with the off-route alarm every 500m as soon as I went offroad…

    • @wiggle
      @wiggle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha bike was on viagra! Data and accuracy on the 1030 is pretty unbeatable. Think you can turn the alarm tone off on the Roam…but either way your sorted 🤙🤙🤙

    • @cogsandcaffeine
      @cogsandcaffeine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wiggle it wasn‘t just the alarm. The Roam really isn‘t any big step forward for Wahoo in any way. It‘s slow, it doesn‘t have much memory, and on the last 10 rides it froze 3 times. Though I was happy to be able to switch to Wahoo when the 1st Elemnt came out, I don‘t feel too bad coming back to Garmin now (I still don‘t like their strategy of locking their Connect API to force Garmin-only devices).

      Sadly still no such feature. The best option you get is on the Garmin Connect site, go to Training -> Courses -> Choose course -> ... (3 dots at bottom right of course summary) -> Edit -> Reverse direction -> Save course. you will end up with two courses, e.g., one going CW an the other going CCW, Hopefully something they add to a future update 👍

    One feature I have seen on other makes of units, is the way the route changes colour when re-routing. I don't always know when my Garmin has re-routed due to this, and I keep cycling down the road only find out I have add a mile so to my journey or even have been sent back via a roundabout.

    • @wiggle
      @wiggle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes on Wahoo the re-routed course goes blue which is really clear. Think garmin has a little work to do on making their systems as clear as the Wahoo ecosystem. but minus the re-routing they are pretty unbeatable.

    What are the key differences between 830 and 1030 plus other than size?

    • @wiggle
      @wiggle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The 1030 Plus has a superior battery and some new metrics ( i.e. the Daily workout suggestions and MTB metrics)
      The big selling point is the large 3.5-inch display. In comparison, the Edge 830 has a 2.6-inch display.
      Hope that helps 👍

  • @rdkuless
    @rdkuless ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes.. Garmin left out a big SAFETY FEATURE... The Coding for Audible (voice) turn-by-turn on the car units has all ready been done.. The EDGE already has Bluetooth built in.. SO ask the big QUESTION, "why hasn't Garmin been able to pair a bluetooth speaker (ie the JBL flip) to the EDGE for Audible turn-by-turn directions. "turn right in 200 feet" "Next turn 4.5 miles" "arriving a destination on right"..
    And some of us cyclist cannot see a Garmin edge because of close up vision impairment.. (yes we can still see where we are going down the road) but for me, i can't see anything within about 3 feet.. (blur) The road is crisp (farsighted) This problem makes the $600 EDGE a useless tool to me.. Adding Audible, would make this a great tool for navigation to get from point A to point B..
    This is a safety feature that allows you to get information without taking your eyes off the road.. (hit a pothole when you look down at the GPS to see when and where to turn can cause accidents.. They have the technology already designed and bluetooth already built in.. SO WHAT IS THE DELAY..?

      @@wiggle I rather like the Karoo (minus the mediocre battery life). Had hoped, I’d be a fan of the Karoo 2, but it, unfortunately appears to have an even shorter battery life, and the screen size appears to be suboptimal. The screen resolution (while supposed to be), does not visually appear to trump its predecessor’s, either - at least, with the matte screen film it comes with, on (a set of proper screen protectors has been ordered; I can report once they’re delivered and installed). Among the things I positively prefer over Garmin’s are the UI / UX (Karoo’s & Absolute One’s are by far the best), the screen resolution, the quality of maps, and the physical aesthetic...
      I also suspect, the Mio Cyclo flagships compete with the 1030 Plus more or less neck-to-neck, although are much less popular for whatever reason.

      The batteies in the newer Garmin devices are pretty decent and don't drop off badly over time (should last you a lot longer than 2 years). and if using for a multi day bikepacking ride, we'd suggest taking a small external battery to charge it riding/overnight. Hope that helps
