- From the "real world IFR" series, this flight takes you to the Twin Cities Minneapolis/St. Paul - specifically, to the St. Paul Downtown airport (KSTP) right on the Mississippi River. We'll enter the clouds shortly after take-off from Cedar Rapids, IA (KCID) in my Beech Bonanza and fly the ILS Runway 34 approach at the destination airport. As usual with ATC closed captions and close-up views of the avionics systems.
Route of flight: KCID TWOLF.TWOLF4 KSTP

,..always remember..that Martin is a highly- experienced and highly- skilled pilot..and also..a highly- experienced .. and highly- skilled.. instrument engineer..
I just started watching your videos today. You are officially one of my favorite pilots to watch. I love the way you zoom in cropping the panel/checklist explaining what you're doing each segment of the flight. It helps A TON!
Thanks for joining the channel, and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
- Martin
Landlubber here....The amount of non stop data, input and outflow, is just stunning.......that's on a good day and in a good plane.......respect.
This video was a gem, great material for those of us working on our instrument rating. Thanks for your efforts Martin, very much appreciated!
My pleasure, Earl - best of luck for completing your instrument rating!
- Martin
Your videos are incredible!! By far my top 3 favorite flight vlog video channels ever. As a soon to be student pilot I appreciate your videos and how clear they are and how much effort and time you put into the editing process. Please keep them coming.
Thank you Martin. I paused this video frequently to learn from you how to use the Apen. This great video should be for instrument students to watch in every flight school. Keep them coming!
Martin ....Your videos somehow just keep getting better and better. This one no doubt took an extra long time editing as with all the pop ups and split screens.
This one definitely deserves 2 THUMBS-UP.
Thank you, Bob. Yes, this one took a little more time with all the details and annotations... hoping that it helps viewers understand how to make use of their avionics.
Have a great day and weekend!
- Martin
@@martinpauly You truly understand IFR very well. Your demeanor during the flight sounds so comfortable. You explain it so well also. Thanks again for sharing with us all. This one should be seen by students on how to fly IFR with confidence. Good day to you !!!
@@bobninemire6859 Again, thank you Bob! Hopefully this will help new IFR pilots getting used to flying in the system and taking advantage of their avionics.
I too very much enjoyed the annotations slit screens and pop up windows its like sitting in the right seat with you. Only having VFR rating you make IFR much more understandable making sense out of complicated Flying Thank you . Regards Steve B@@martinpauly
Great flight Martin. As always, you set an excellent example for all IFR pilots. I love the way you anticipate and stay ahead of things along the way. Great job!
Thank you, Preston!
- Martin
I can't imagine the time and editing skills it must take to put together a video like this with all of the overlays, audio, etc. As a newly minted PPL with the itch to get started on instrument training, this video is no doubt a fantastic introduction to real life instrument flying and the skills and knowledge required to stay safe and ahead of the airplane when things get busy. Looking forward to watching many more of your videos.
Thanks for the kind feedback, Mitch.
By all means, I hope you'll go for the instrument rating. It's a lot of work, but very worthwhile.
- Martin
He makes it look easy.
This has got to be the best video i've seen showing a complete insight into an IFR flight. Much appreciated & keep them coming!
Thank you so much, Luke!
- Martin
Excellent video. I was right there with you in the right seat thanks to your perfect video!
Glad to hear - that's what I am hoping the viewers can experience!
- Martin
I love the IFR flights by Martin, the details and great video editing.
As student pilot with only foggles instrument flights I cheer for every bit of information and usage of the great panel.
Thank you for great library of videos to learn from.
Hi Mateusz, thanks for your feedback, and good luck for your flight training!
Also: I highly recommend getting some training with an experienced instructor for flying in "real" clouds (not just with foggles). It makes a big difference and can be very disorienting.
- Martin
That was a FANTASTIC video! Thank you for making it!
Glad you found it helpful!
- Martin
Your commitment to flying like a professional pilot should be an inspiration to all aspiring pilots. The example you set is awesome!
An interesting note - one of my mentors and I were talking about identifying a NAVAID aurally vs with the indication on an FMS like your GTN or a G1000.
He loaded a VOR approach for training with a new owner. The G1000 identified the VOR correctly, but the couldn't get a course to come in on the HSI. When they turned on the volume for the NAVAID, voice transmissions were being made over the VOR. Of course there was a NOTAM for this, but it is interesting nonetheless. A NAVAID may identify on our system, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is usable for our purposes.
Thanks, I’m not a glass person and this video gave me the visual I’ve been looking for 😊
You never saw her go through this checklist process and cockpit management process so assiduously as Martin does. She paid the price.
Fantastic graphics! Thanks Martin.
Glad you liked the graphical overlays and annotations!
- Martin
..way to go Martin..thanks again..and please.. keep em coming..
Thank you - glad you enjoyed this flight and video!
- Martin
Martin awesome video for ALL IFR pilots. When you got switched direct KIKKY it made me think how nervous I would have been!! The transition back to GPS knowing you had to go back to LOC for the approach! Anytime you want a Co-Pilot let me know. I will buy lunch!
Thanks, Dana! And no reason to be nervous - after all, you've been training with a great instructor, so you are well prepared! 😀
In all seriousness, though: Turning me back to KIKKY after saying I'd get vectors to the final approach course should not have happened. The Opposing Bases guys have discussed this in their podcast a few times. A simple "turn left 20 degrees, intercept the localizer" would have achieved the same thing with a lot less button pushing. If you ever get into a situation like this, don't feel bad to request a heading to intercept final instead.
- Martin
These videos just keep getting better and better. I love the way you have FF, Aspen and Garmin on the screen. These are true masterpieces for anyone learning to fly and getting their instrument rating. Can’t wait for the next one!
Oh to fly with Martin..........
Good work αs always, Martin!
Thank you!
- Martin
Great video..thank you. Wishing you safe flying always.
Thank you!
I am working towards my instrument now and this was extremely helpful and clarifying. Thank you
❤ that switch from vectors to direct to the IF. I think we are going to see much more of that. And your comment about doing the ILS so you won't get rusty on switching made me smile.
Hi Mark! I'd love to put a controller in my Bonanza and throw this scenario ("Direct KIKKI") at them, after "Expect vectors to the ILS". It might be an eye opener... The Opposing Bases guys understand this; they have often commented about this, saying once the aircraft has been told to expect headings, that's what ATC should give them. In my situation here in the video, the controller could easily have said "turn 20 degrees left, intercept the localizer", and we would have achieved the same result with a lot less button pushing (and a lot less opportunity for error).
But I think you're probably right - we live in the RNAV world, so we'll likely see more and more of this kind of thing.
Have a great weekend!
- Martin
@@martinpauly Yeah, it would be nice if once they announced VTF, they gave VTF. Or, as RH and AG have also said, announce vectors to the IF if that's what they are going to do. Fortunately, it's not a big deal with most GA equipment (unless you switch to VTF with a GPS that wipes out the waypoints - the reason I prefer "Activate Leg" as a more universal, cross-platform" solution). But it's a reason the scenario is in my list of special IPC tasks.
@@midlifeflyer I agree, this is an excellent scenario for an IPC. 👏
Thanks Martin!! I e been flying for 54 years and still actively fly my 1963 P-35 Bonanza in Monterey, California( I’m retired and still live in Delavan, Wisconsin but travel to Monterey via Southwest Airlines every month to stay with my twin brother in Monterey( he’s a retired USAF C-5 pilot). We both learned to fly at KUES and got our private pilot certificate in 1970! We both received the FAA Wright Brothers Award in 2021. We are both active CFII’s and still do instructing. Your videos and techniques are outstanding and helpful as a learning tool! Keep up the excellent and instructive work!!
Congratulations on the Wright Brothers Award - that's outstanding!
Delevan, WI - do they still have the little airport there (Lake Lawn, I think) across from the resort? Back in the 1990s I went there a few times for a nice lunch. I heard the runway has deteriorated badly since then, but I haven't been back there to see for myself.
- Martin
Yes! Lake Lawn(C59) still open.. the resort across the street is still open and thriving! The runway is a little rough but still usable. Unfortunately no instrument approach.. they used to have an NDB approach but that’s no longer there. I kept my B-19 Beech Sport at Lake lawn from 1983-1987 then bought a hangar at East Troy 57C that I still own. I bought my P-35 Bonanza in 1990 and kept it at 57C till I flew it out to Monterey with my twin brother in November of 2019. The hangar is vacant as of now. Not sure what I’ll do with it but it’s not costing me much to keep it!!
What a fantastic video. I need to watch it again …..
Very well executed IFR flight and great video edit, thumbs up! 👍
Best camera angles on TH-cam 😍
Thank you very much!
- Martin
Remember that MP does the work and keeps current. Has the time and experience. Great Job on this one MP…enjoyed it.
Ha - at first I thought "MP" was Manifold Pressure. Took me a second to understand... 🤣
Regards,
Martin
Excellent presentation. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Thanks again. 🙂
This is an excellent training video, very professional, complete, and excellent explanations. Well done!!! Also noticed new sheep skin seat covers. Would you please share the vendor and your opinion of those? Thanks for all you do to support aviation.
Thanks for the kind words, Jim. The sheep skin covers were ordered on Aircraft Spruce; here is a link:

Martin
Great video with panel overlay & explanation, I am about to start IFR training, This is great, thankyou so much.
👍✅ still great content Martin, tks!
Thank you!
- Martin
Great IFR video!!!
Thank you, Bobby!
- Martin
Wow. As a person wishing to someday be flying in planes and conditions similar to you, what a flawless video with great detail, but no overexplaining. Excellent. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the kind words, and all the best for your own flying, too!
- Martin
Hi Martin, thanks for another great video. Best documented IFR flights on TH-cam. It‘s a pleasure to watch and learn. We can only imagine how much time it takes to put all the footage together. We didn‘t finish our IFR due to Covid and than FAA stopped the possibility to take IFR check rides outside of the USA. We didn’t realize that you still see all the approach fixes once you have loaded and activated vectors to final. On the G1000 once you have activated and loaded vectors to final, only the final approach fix was visible and if the controller gave you another fix you had to reload the approach. Great that they made this improvement on the GTN750Xi. Many greetings from Switzerland, Cornelia and Christophe
Hi Cornelia and Christophe, thank you for the kind words. I try to check two boxes with my videos, entertainment and training/teaching - and from the comments it looks like this one going to St. Paul hit both of those.
You are right about the waypoints leading up to the FAF, and how the GTN750 loads them (on Vectors-to-Final) even though it activates the FAF. This way, the prior waypoints are easily accessible if or when needed. The older GPS devices don't do this, and it can make things more difficult. It's a simple but very useful improvement in the GTN series.
Hopefully you'll get a chance to complete your instrument training and rating one day. It's a good skill to have and a rating with a lot of utility.
Greetings from Iowa where it's snowing today, though the snow is wasted on us (since we have no mountains to ski from).
- Martin
Even your beginning videos have been great. You have always strived for real content! I love your ME especially! I’ll always remember meeting you at EAA 2022 on the bus one evening. I’ve been an admirer of your work prior to but even more since meeting you. You always remind me of my father, since he is from W. Berlin. Thanks for all great memories and learning opportunities you create for all of us
Thank you for the very kind note, Ben - and maybe see you at EAA 2024!
- Martin
These videos are fantastic “detail entertainment.” All relaxation plus technical skill and a lot of help, coupled with great views.
Glad you found this helpful, Tom!
- Martin
Another good one Martin… love the shirt 😅. It’s nice to see STP when it’s not frozen over and you have no icing to deal with. Last time I did a landing there it was -20c, but the density alt was good.
Thanks, Andy!
Glad to hear you are "allowed" to like she shirt even though it's a competitor of yours! 🤣
Not looking forward to the -20c days ahead. Yes, DA makes for great performance, but I'll take a reduced climb rate any day if I can do so in shorts and t-shirt while still feling my fingers and toes!
- Martin
Competition makes GA better for all of us. I’d hate it if we had to fly 172s all the time…. The only way we get more people in the pilot’s seat is to drive prices down and make it easier to fly safely. We need more companies to embrace the competition and move the bar higher.
@@andyhutch6482 Agreed!
Great work, very impressive, i ˋm loving it - thx verx much!!!
Thank you, Manfred!
- Martin
Thanks again for sharing. Always instructive.
Excellent work Martin. Great example of how to navigate the IFR system and stay ahead of the airplane.
Thank you - glad you found this useful!
- Martin
St Paul Downtown is always my airport of chice when I have to go to the twin cities, and I always use St Paul flight center as my FBO, they always treat us great! Nice flight Martin!
Yes, the FBO was great and very helpful!
- Martin
Wow. Nice. We need about 3 of these a week please! Real-time IFR edited to remove slow periods for us ADD types. Seriously, great stuff Martin! 😊
Three per week? I'll have to retire from the day job before I can do that...
- Martin
So you’re saying there’s a chance? 🤣🤣🤣
Great content. Thanks!
As always, excellent video. Thank you
Great video Martin. Really enjoyed the shots of the instrument panel and GPS pop ups. Did I say great video!
Thank you - glad to hear you enjoyed this flight!
- Martin
Great exercise! TY👍🏼
Indeed!
Always enjoy watching your videos
Some very good info
Good video. But I am really old, I remember flight planning with a with an aluminium MB-4. In the day I held a Zero Zero certification, which was issued by the Navy. And which I was smart enough not to use, in normal situations. But I did make approaches, and land in IFR conditions in unimproved strips at night, no approach plates no navaides.I revered the early aviation pioneers. And I remember using NAVSTAR and GPS long before it was certified for. Aviation is an awesome experience and its amazing how far it has come in such a short period.
In 1929 the first person to land an airplane on instruments alone was who?
Ray, no doubt the pioneer days of aviation were a lot more challenging than flying (and flying on instruments) today. What an adventure it must have been when Jimmy Doolittle took off and landed on instruments for the first time! I started flying in the 1980s, and instrument flying in the 1990s, so an "old" avionics panel to me is one with VOR and ADF. Even that seems a long ways away from what we have available in our panels today!
Regards,
Martin
Great video. Loved you showing the instrument changes. It's fantastic when entertainment and education combine. Thank you!
Thanks, Daniel - glad to hear you enjoyed this one!
- Martin
Thank you Martin. I always watch all of these. Really helps!
Glad I could help!
- Martin
Enjoyed your video, very thorough planning and procedures. I used to fly Lear 45's in here to St. Paul Flight Center several times a week, your video takes me back to good memories and the many approaches we made to this great airport. Take care Martin!
Thanks, Kevin - glad to hear I could help bring back some nice memories!
- Martin
I really enjoyed this upload. Cheers
Thanks Martin! Excellent video for us IFR wannabees!
Thank you, John!
- Martin
Nice video... Great example of a "real world" IFR flight!
Thanks, TJ!
- Martin
Great stuff. I'm about ready to take my IFR checkride so it's great to see how you constantly stay ahead of the airplane, cross-check yourself and use the technology you have to lighten the load. A model of single pilot IFR flying. Thanks for posting.
Thank you, and good luck for your instrument practical test! Let me know how it goes!
- Martin
You make the best videos ever. I love all the explanations and graphics. Beautifully done one again. Thanks
Thank you for the kind words, Chad! Glad you enjoyed this video.
- Martin
This is very detail. Thankyou for sharing
As a low time pilot just starting IFR ground, this is exciting to watch. Thank you for such great content. This motivates me to study and learn.
Great video 👍🙏
Thanks, Tom!

Tolles Video Martin. Immer wieder eine Freude deine genauen Erklärungen zu sehen. Vielen Dank dafür und Grüße aus Germany
Vielen Dank, Ingo, und liebe Grüsse aus Iowa!

Fantastic video! I've seen your posts for years in BeechTalk, but this is the first time I've watched one of your videos. As a CFII based in the Twin Cities, it was great to see such complete and polished procedures (and video/audio editing) used for IFR work at an airport I visit regularly.
Thank you for the kind words, John!
Greetings from one State south of you.
- Martin
Thanks Martin. That was one of the best real IFR videos I've seen on TH-cam. Very well annotated. I'd complain that you have way too much technology in the cockpit if it weren't for the fact that you seem to use it all very effectively. Stay sharp!
Thank you for the kind words!
As for "too much technology"... I would say I have some redundancy which could make a big difference when something fails in flight. But everything is useful and has purpose even when it's all working.
Regards,
Martin
Superb! Thanks again Martin.
Thank you so much!
- Martin
Yery nice. Well produced so we can follow everything. Thanks!
Thanks, Don. That was the idea - to annotate it such that it would be easy to follow along and see step-by-step how the avionics helps comply with ATC instructions.
- Martin
Martin, terrific video. It was especially helpful to see the transition from vectors to final in VLOC, then back to GPS to the dirrrct fix intercept, then back to VLOC and approach mode to fly in on the localizer. Also seeing in real time the reconfiguration to set the plane up to fly the glide slope down. Camera positions were spot on!
Thanks again, Rick
Thanks, Rick - glad you found this video helpful!
- Martin
Martin, one of your best videos! Incredibly informative especially for a new IR student such as myself. Thank you for bringing us along.
Glad you enjoyed coming along on this flight, Lee.
All the best for your instrument training and checkride!

Mr Pauly, I truly LOVE the detailed content as a student pilot! Very informative! I appreciate you helping me (indirectly) on my journey
Glad I can help - and good luck for completing your pilot certificate!
- Martin
I love that you have all the annotations that show the changes being made to Navigator and autopilot. I am sure it must take a lot of time to edit a video of such quality. I thank you for that as I am getting close to Instrument check ride.
Hi Thomas. Yes, these annotations and captions do take a lot of time, but from the comments I see here on TH-cam it looks like they add value and help interested viewers to really understand what's going on and how to efficiently use the avionics - and that makes it all worthwhile.
Best regards,
Martin
Outstanding video. The effort that has gone into the edit is admitted and appreciated. Thank you
Once again, a great video. Always enjoy your videos, especially when you're flying IFR. Love that panel!
Amazing as always! I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas!
Thank you Martin for a great learning video. As always great communications.
Thank you, Stan - glad you enjoyed this video!

Another great flight. Nice landing on the fixed distance marker. Thanks for letting "ride along" with you. If you haven't already be sure to have a Juicy Lucey in Minneapolis.
Thanks, James! And yes - I have had a Juicy Lucy in Minneapolis before, but on a different trip.

A lot of screens to work on…! Must know in which sequence to push the knobs.
Very instructive videos, thank you very much!
Yes, learning to use all the buttons takes some time and effort. But with practice it all becomes second nature.

Great to view a video utilizing latest technologies of avionics. Following your checklist which is slightly different than mine is great for building familiarity with the flow of a checklist. Even maintaining currency leaves areas of improvement.
Glad you enjoyed this one, Clinton!

Great video Martin. Your continuous cross referencing the various instruments back to the moving map displays is very good. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Ken - glad you enjoyed this video!

Excellent video!! Love your editing and splicing in all your Aspen and GTN 750txi and GFC600 data. You set a very high standard for quality!! Keep up the great work!!
Thank you, Jeffery!
- Martin
Another great video! Thanks Martin! Two things: RPM on take off should be 2700 I guess. It’s indicating 2670 only. Not a problem on a super long runway but you might need it on a short runway some time. I had that specifically checked and set to slightly above 2700 on my Bonanza so I have all the power available when I fly out of short grass runways.
Second thing: I retract gear only when out of available runway not before.
Again, thanks for your videos! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Keep them coming!
Fröhliche Weihnachten from 🇩🇪 😃
Ah, yes!! Another sunny, clear day in Iowa!! The wife and I were hoping to get back to Cedar Rapids after Thanksgiving. We thought we might fly our Archer, since we now have a cat.... But, I think we missed our window of opportunity. Any IFR will likely include icing conditions. So, it might have to be with Allegiant and the cat in a kennel somewhere. Enjoy riding along with you, Martin. I always learn something. Thank you! Rick in Tucson. And it's Saint Paul... not San Paul... (-:
Sunny clear day... yeah, rub it in, Rick from Tuscon! 🤣

Thanks Martin for a view how Garmin works with your Aspens. Help me with purchase decision. Thanks buddy. 👍🏾
Glad I could help, Warren!

Learned to fly at KSTP
It looked like a great airport from what I could see!
- Martin
Great flight. Always making improvements. I like goin* back to paper checklist…just seems to make it simpler.
Thanks. And yes, I like paper checklists; in a simple cockpit like the Bonanza, that's really all you need, and it's easier to use than any electronics device I've seen.
- Martin
Martin another Great Video! Every wanna a be IFR PILOT AND IFR PILOTS NEED TO USE THESE AS A EXCELLENT

Thanks - that's what I'm hoping, that these videos will help new instrument pilots to understand how to efficiently and safely fly in the system.
