    Martin’s videos are clean, clear, and immersive. It is really made for both pilots and enthusiasts alike, and totally devoid of self-promotion or unnecessary narrative (I feel most TH-cam pilots are only interested in showing their faces and the never ending narratives on their superior airmanship). I had lost interest in flying videos until I found this channel. Love the content and look forward to seeing more.

    Yes, it is often surprising when making a flight at dusk how it can seem pretty light at altitude and then you descend for landing and it seems to become night almost instantly.

  • @freddyfpv7422

    You had plenty of runway in front of you on take off. Positive rate of climb, gear up is for multi engines. If you are in a single, keep your gear down until you can no longer land. At least that is what I was taught. Nice flight!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am sure you were taught to do that - most of us were, including myself. But think about this: If the engine dies right after lift-off, how often do people die because of a gear-up landing, and how often do people die because they don't have enough altitude to get somewhere where a landing is survivable? Saving the aircraft isn't as important as saving the occupants in my book.
      A nice side effect is that you can use the same procedure/muscle memory in twins and in singles.
      Regards,
      Martin

      Disagree with gear up , another comfortation and not real world experience.
      I landed right after engine surg on takeoff, straight ahead after lift off, the pitch messed up fuel intake I assume
      Landed safely but off the end of runway and full power to get through grass and back to taxiway.

    Amazing! video describes every facet of the flight in a logical, organized way, Thank you for your videos. I really enjoyed them! I have been getting the itch of joining the Bonanza family. Q: What would be the ballpark cost of operating a Bonanza, I understand there are many different factors that could be different depending , just on the range annually? I estimated closer to $270 per hour is that number close? Thank you!

    Another good video! I noticed when you were given PD to 4000 you didn't report leaving 10,000 when you started your descent. Seems a lot of pilots don't do that. Is that something most pilots aren't doing in a radar environment? Just curious. Thanks!!!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, Kevin. I believe the letter of the law says it has to be reported, even when it’s not PD. From what I can see, few people actually report it (in a radar environment, of course), and controllers seem to be good with that. If any controllers here read this, I’d appreciate your thoughts on this.

    At video time 11:45 departure ATC says: climb and maintain 10,000 and you confirm 10,000. and then you level off at only 9,000... ( i'm not a pilot...please explain)

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That transmission you heard at 11:45 is for another aircraft. It had nothing to do with my flight. It's typical for many airplanes in the same geographic area to share one ATC frequency.

      Great video, Martin! Your avionics are great to watch for compare-and-contrast purposes… I had Aspen in my previous airplane, but my new bird has Garmin. It’s good to see how similar they are, though. The standardization of displays and “buttonology” in the avionics industry is very cool. Also, the differences in performance between your Bonanza and my turbo Mooney are so slight that your approach workflow is very transferable to my own. Great to see. Good to see the FlySto data, too… I just found out about this app from another aviation channel, and I think I will have to get it!

    Thanks Martin, great edit and good to see all your avionics tech working in harmony. Just a couple of ??s if I may - what do you plan in terms of speed management on final approach, is it a constant IAS with gear and flaps down until visual / DA, or do you fly a continuously decelerating speed as you get closer in and lower? Presumably gear and flap speed limits are relevant here, verses trying to keep ATC happy with other IFR traffic behind you? In the jet world that I inhabit for the day job, our speed is held stable basically at Vref+5kt from 1500' agl til touchdown, but I'm thinking you have more flex in terms of speed management.
    Also, what weather charts do you use for your icing planning? In the video you had a nice temperature inversion at both airports, 8C OAT at the surface, but 10C OAT showing on your Aspens at 9000'. I get to fly a non de-iced Comanche over here in Europe, and icing is always a concern outside of summer.....
    Thanks again, keep up the good work.
    🙂

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Bonanza allows a lot of flexibility for speed management on final. I try to maintain 100 KIAS after lowering the gear until short final, but my max speed with gear extended is 153 KIAS, so I can speed up significantly if ATC needs me to. And with the drag of the gear, the Bonanza will slow down quickly, too, when needed. Speed management on approach just isn't difficult in Bonanzas.
      Regards,
      Martin

    Why do you lean on climb out to get the #6 cylinder to a specific temp? Is there a reason for the #6? Is it Bonanza specific?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I could pick any cylinder for the "EGT Target Method" to lean in the climb. Cylinder #6 is my reference cylinder for switching from rich-of-peak to lean-of-peak, so I just always use cylinder #6 for convenience.

I do this at 1000, feet above mins 500 feet above mins 300, 200, it has saved me in low approach’s to maintain situational awareness. Great video!😁🛫

I have been chasing some STEC 55X performance issues and need videos of my flight displays to illustrate the problems. • @watashiandroid8314
      @watashiandroid8314 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know I do! I RAM mount suction cup my cellphone with Avare for maps, airport info, and VFR nav so it's at top of the dash level. It's much nicer than looking down into the cockpit. Clean surfaces help but ultimately the softer GoPro suction cup hold way more reliably than the stiffer RAM suction cups I have. Some of my older RAM cups even fall off of clean window glass after a few hours! (Those only last a few minutes on the airplane windshield)

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't say that this has been a big problem. Occasionally a camera has fallen off, but then it was a very old suction cup (> 5 years or so). As long as I keep my equipment in reasonable shape and the windows clean, the camera mounts work alright for me. Now if only I could say the same thing about overheating or running the batteries down... 🥵

    Good morning, Martin! Another great video! Thank you for letting us ride along. As usual, I get homesick watching you fly out of CID. So peaceful compared to Tucson and Phoenix. Not to mention the panel envy I get as you display the power of your avionics! Keep up the good work! Rick from Tucson.

    Mr. Pauly, I'm looking for some insight into a couple of other scenarios. Would you have taken the same flight if the temperature in the clouds was at or below freezing? Also, if your airplane had de-icing boots or de-ice/anti-ice fluid (TKS) would you have taken the flight if you were to be in the clouds the majority of the way and the temperature was at or below freezing? Thanks, Christopher

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Christopher. Given how long I was in the clouds during the descent and approach phase of this flight, I would not attempt this in my Bonanza without boots or TKS if the temperature in the clouds was below freezing. On the other hand, the climb-out through the thin cloud layer out of Cedar Rapids would likely be no problem.
      With boots and/or TKS, the descent and approach through icing becomes a judgement call. Are the forecasts or PIREPs indicating a lot of ice, or SLD? Then it's probably a no-go. No reports or just light icing in the forecast, I'd say this is safely possible for a FIKI-equipped airplane.
      Regards,
      Martin

    Mike With the amount of IFR flying you do, have you considered getting a light twin? Like a B55, I know its more to operate, but much safer............

      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would love to have a B58 Baron, but financially that’s too much of a stretch for me. Buying it is one thing… but flying and maintaining it costs significantly more than the Bonanza.

    G,day Martin from Sydney Australia. IMC no sight seeing, just flying by radial and vertical numbers on this one?
    Can you feel a difference when flying with gas in only one wing tank? Do you have to trim for it?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      John, the Bonanza handles quite well even with a significant imbalance between left and right tank. Having said that, I would not fly with one full and the other empty. No need to take it to those extremes.

    Martin, Mark here, new sub. I'm not a pilot, but my father dabbled in it and shared it with me, and consequently I've always been interested in aviation. I've seen many , many flight videos on TH-cam, and yours are consistently the best. They're clear, beautifully presented, well-edited, and the way you show each aspect of what you do, and do it by the book as you should, is a pleasure to take in both visually and auditorily. Keep up the good work, sir.

      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Kevin. I've made this flight (KCID - KMSN) many times in the past with just VOR navigation. There was no magic involved in making that work, especially since there is an airway that goes almost directly from Cedar Rapids to Madison. The maps and displays are a lot fancier today, though, and I would have had to approach a different runway (one with an ILS).

    This video was so informative. I still need to become a student pilot, so I was amazed to see how many tasks are handled and monitored by the pilot on this IFR flight. I can see how pilot overload is a thing. Nice video, well produced. It gave me a real sense of what it might be like to fly such a fantastic plane.

    Is there still a requirement to report leaving an assigned altitude? I wish I knew about your TH-cam channel when I was still flying for the airlines. I did several overnights in Cedar Rapids, it would have geat to have met you for small coffee.

      Overnights in Cedar Rapids… lucky you! 😂
      Re: reporting the descent… let me copy&paste the response I just added when another viewer asked that same question: I believe the letter of the law says it has to be reported, even when it’s not PD. From what I can see, few people actually report it (in a radar environment, of course), and controllers seem to be good with that. If any controllers here read this, I’d appreciate your thoughts on this.

    I'm surprised you're not as active syncing the heading but up with your course. Generally as soon as I am cleared for the approach I arm APR.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I realize I tend to activate APR later than ideal. It's something I need to work on.
      Sync'ing the heading bug? I don't see the need to do this after every little turn. If or when I get instructions to turn ten degrees left or right, it takes literally just one single push of the heading knob to sync the heading.

      Martin

    • @mrscorpio4444

      @@martinpauly It’s not bad idea to have the heading bug synced…this will give you the option of going down a level of automation quickly and easily if you want to. Don’t like what the autopilot is doing? Just downgrade to heading mode and sort it out. Having the option to drop down a level instead of just turning off the automation adds flexibility and utility. Cheers, Ron

    Good video. I had many night takeoffs, flights and landings in my military career because the schedule and mission required it. Afterward, In my Bonanza, I never did. Just one more thing I had control over. Your pre-takeoff briefing says it all; “In event of engine failure look for a suitable landing area”. In the dark, you can’t see one. But, to each his own.
