I have been a lurker for yours for a few months now Mr. Pauly. Just subscribed! I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I spent 3 years in Deutschland back in the early 80's stationed at Spangdahlem AB. I worked Eifel Control 1982 - 1985. Totally loved Germany and had a simply FANTASTIC time! Never did fly there though. ATC was the best job I ever had. Been flying for fun since 1978. Had quite a hiatus from flying after I got out of the Air Force due to the normal.... finances, family etc. I'm at a point now where I've jumped back in with both feet. Currently in the process of purchasing a Bonanza J35! Can't wait until April!!! One word for your viewers.... NEVER be afraid of ATC! We exist for you and because of you! To assist and to help keep you safe as much as we can!! Thank you Mr. Pauly for what you do and for your videos! Very nice work, very enjoyable and informative!!
Thanks for the note, ipmedic11, and for your comment about ATC being there to help. I've found ATC to be overwhelmingly helpful with very few isolated exceptions. The Eifel is a laid back but very pretty part of Germany. When I grew up, our parents took us to places around Mendig and Mayen a lot since our grandmother had a cabin in the area. Later I returned a few times to taste the good Mosel wine - sometimes there was a LOT of tasting going on. Good times :-) I am happy to hear that you are getting back into flying. I hope that J35 will treat you well. If you haven't yet, I strongly suggest you join the BeechTalk online message board. It's free, and easily the best resource out there for Bonanza pilots. I lived in Speicher when I was in Germany, upstairs from a wonderful family of which we became great friends and we'd travel with quite often! I hear you on the "a LOT" of tasting going on! Many "wine probes" and tours of the wineries in the area! Did I say MANY?? Thank God for busses!! And Bitburger Pils is still my favorite bier! A side note, my grandmother grew up in Wittlich so it was pretty cool being able to visit her birth place! And having it so close! Thank you again! I look forward to your videos and tips! Thanks, Dave. There's nothing wrong with staying in less complex airspace (in fact, that's where I do most of my flying in the Midwest). But if you ever want to venture into a busy area, there's no reason to be scared - and I hope my videos can help pilots understand what to expect.

Holy smokes Cpt Pauly...what a grand view. When you lined up with the Verrazano and the sombre music came on ... I got goosebumps upon goosebumps. It looks like a scene from the movies. Then I am once again humbled by the sight of the soaring skyscrapers...I'm thinking man, concrete, steel and an idea =Manhattan City. Sir, I have not seen any video like this thus far of the Big City. Next time when there aren't TFRs please do a video over the East River so we get to see the other side and Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Double thumbs up to you as usual.

Thanks for the kind words! I file a flight plan when flying IFR, which I do on most cross-country flights regardless of the weather. A few times I operated VFR out of Class B airports, like landing in Boston (a very short flight), or taking off from SFO and MCI for sightseeing. Regards, Martin
Martin, enjoying your videos. I think I have watched my third or fourth one, very informative for a rusty VFR pilot, getting back into flying and planning on IFR training. Loved the low ceiling IFR at CID and the missed approach. Next time you fly over Sumner, wag your wings, my wife grew up there. The music choice on this video going up the Hudson was beautiful. Also loved that you left in the long taxi at JFK on your landing there. Shows the enormity of that airport.
And that's just one of the many spectacular views we got. The camera/video really doesn't do it justice, it is amazing to fly over the Hudson and see this big city from the air in real life! Regards, Martin
Yes, the Hudson River is a pretty spectacular way to fly and enjoy breathtaking views. Flying along the lake front in Chicago (Lake Michigan) is somewhat similar, though Manhattan is of course quite a bit larger. We are fortunate as US pilots to have the Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) over the Hudson River, giving us the freedom to fly there and enjoy the view.
scisimmer Private planes fly over the river, and bays all around NYC. That includes circling Manhattan via the East river and the Hudson river going over the East river bridges and also the GW Bridge. They cannot fly over Manhattan or any of the Bouroghs. Most fly out of Teetobourogh airport in NJ.
Pretty common especially during the summer, you can go between the Hudson River and east river over the central park or around battery park, (due to Trump tower TFR I don't know if that is still possible though). During the Summer you see a constant flow of planes coming from FRG or TEB flying around the city. Its a pretty big document for the flight and it involves flying a thousand or so feet under RJ's and 73's into LGA which fly along the river sometimes.
Awesome video! 2 years ago I made the Hudson route with a tourist helicopter on the left seat. Next time I will make it with an instructor in a C172, even on the left seat... ;-)
Happy new year Martin, here I am having a good time with your videos (as usual). This time, I have some questions for you. I'm just trying to know how the "things" works on USA, so, here are the questions: 1.-Is the FBO ramp a non-controlled zone? because you contacted ground just before leaving the ramp. Is this a general case or it depends on the airport? 2.-I've never seen a round up while taxing, is this normal? Why didn't you do the round up at the FBO ramp? any restrinctions? 3.- Ground controller told you "monitor 119.1". I understand when the ATC says monitor, you just have to wait for that ATC facility calls you, but you called the ATC, why? Thank you in advance
1. Yes, that's generally the case here. Taxiways and ramps are either "movement areas" under the control of Ground/Tower, or "non movement areas" where you can move around freely. All the FBO ramps I have seen are in the latter category, so no need to call Ground to start moving - not until you get to the movement area. 2. Run-up while taxiing - it's a controversial topic. I see advantages in that there's less worry about people, aircraft, vehicles behind you getting blasted when you rev up the engine (compared with the FBO ramp), and the engine and oil will have had more time to warm up if you delay the run-up. At these large airports, Tower usually expects you to be ready when you get to the departure end of the runway. On the other hand, it does require a lot more focus than doing the run-up while parked. 3. I don't remember exactly how this all unfolded on this particular flight. From the video, I think what happened is I hadn't heard Tower call me when I got to the intersection to which Ground had sent me, so I figured I'll let Tower know I'm ready. Best regards, Martin

Seems like a lifetime ago I used to fly ATR-42 out of Newark and later 747-100 freighter and 757 freighter from Newark . I prefer living and flying from Wyoming.
I didn't hear any position reports as you flew up the river, did you edit them out? I'm originally from Brooklyn but now live in PA with my 177B Cardinal. Years ago I did fly out of Zahn's airport on LI, long closed, and Flushing in Queens NYC, same fate. Never did the River trip.
I was interest in hearing how that went, too bad. Flushing airport was only a few miles from LaGuardia and the NY chart had a area referred to as the Flushing pie slice that allowed VFR traffic into and out without contacting ATC or the LaGuardia tower, they did ask for a sign off by a CFI though. An ignorant NYC mayor closed it for no reason just like Daley's closing of the airport in Chicago. No hearings, no comment, just the big government hammer.
The asshole from 17:05 is too cool to respond in a humane way to being wished a Good Day... The novelty of everything wears off, even the joy brought by a 10 000 $ per month ATC salary.
Another great flight video Martin! The Hudson River exit was a great idea although it may have been your only choice with all the TFR's. After I watched that sloppy weather flight into JFK, I immediately became a subscriber! Anyway, keep up the good work and thanks to you and your lovely family for sharing your personal life with us!

Loved your video !!! As a private pilot myself, I've always wanted to try the Hudson River corridor but I just don't have enough experience to do it safely. Your video was the next best thing!
Hi Matt, I have a suggestion for you - team up with a flight instructor who has flown the Hudson SFRA before, and do it together. Could be for your next BFR or something like that. It'll help you grow as a pilot, and it'll be a lot of fun!
Living in Maine, kinda tough to do that but if we ever get around to going to NYC, I'll let my family go see "Mama Mia" and I'll find a somebody to take me flying! I'd love to fly it someday but coastal Maine is gonna have to tie me over until that day.
It's amazing to fly there - the video really doesn't do it justice, but then flying out of LGA you've probably had your fair share of nice views of New York. It's a shining example of how great general aviation is in the United States. Regards, Martin
Sehr schön. Based at KUNV in central PA, the Hudson tour is a flying club favorite, and I have landed at Port Clinton as well (and had a burger at the diner!). JFK, on the other hand, would seem unnecessarily stressful. In any case, you made it look like a great experience!
Hi Andrew, yes, that's kind of automatic when you take-off from an airport with in the Class Bravo surface area, but to dot the i's and cross the t's, they explicitly clear you into the airspace for a VFR departure. Regards, Martin

@@martinpauly ... Reminds me of a trip that used to take 5 hours by car. At about 3 hours in, the "...how much longer is this going to take" comments began from my daughters. When I got a pilots' license and bought a plane and the same trip took 2 hours, at about 1 hour I got the exact same comment. Can't win.

As a private pilot from Pittsburgh, KPIT is the only large airport/airspace I've flown into, so it was really interesting to see how JFK handles small, civilian arrivals/departures. Hi Nathan, glad to hear you like the videos. I have a US private pilot certificate (ASEL) with an instrument rating. In my "former life" in Germany I held a PPL with ratings for airplane, motor glider, glider, and glider instructor, but those are no longer current. N70TB is a 1978 A36 Bonanza. What is KPIT like? Are they very busy? Do you know what the fees to land there are?

However w/4 runways I was never put into a hold like the one JFK put u into. It's a great airport, ATW's 2017 airport of the year. Let me know if u ever post a vid. Thanks, Jonathan. You are correct about Teterboro. I've been there a couple of years ago, and chose JFK for our recent visit simply for the large airport experience. No question, TEB is more practical.

Well, the mags don't know (or care) whether the brakes are set or not, right? :-) I do this sometimes at larger airports; they hardly ever have run-up pads by the runway, so waiting until just before take-off is not a good option. The FBO ramp sometimes also doesn't have a good place for the run-up, plus the engine is still cold then. Taxi, on the other hand, is often lengthy at these large airports, so why not do the run-up then?
Just curious, since I fly in this area, I didn't hear any of the Hudson self announcing calls? Assuming the music was overlayed so we didn't hear the radio calls, because I would have liked to hear them. Looked busy in there, especially since my preferred method of flying in the Bravo there was not available. 127.85 was actually Newark tower. You handled it well, all those freq changes happening quickly, and right next to a TFR. Plus taxiing solo at JFK is brave, I have to say. Luckily you had that part of the field mostly to yourself, as it's easy to miss the turns or hold shorts (I think you got a hold of the tower just as you hit taxiway N). Very informative. Not cheap. If you come back, try KCDW or KMMU, and I'll give you a ride to the train. :) (in return for a flight in the Bonanza, of course!)

I appreciate your disciplined use of checklists. The VFR flight up the Hudson is an impressive illustration of the beauty of GA. I want to be stunned by the parking fees at JFK, but then I remember what it costs to park a car in Manhattan.
One of your best yet Martin. I particularly enjoy the fact that you include the stressful radio portion in and out of that very busy airspace. Pilots can really empathize and so live in the experience so much more. The footage over New York is awe inspiring and one of the handheld cameras in the back of the plane produced exceptional results (eg. just at Coney Island - @ 16:00). You might consider using it more often In any case, very well done !
Martin Pauly if you go to 21:23; look at the way to the left, and you will a building with a crane on top of it. The room is kind of like a triangle/ point
Great video. Some of the scenes seemed exceptionally sharp and the colors "popped". Not the usual tinge of blue haze that airborne shots usually suffer from. Like the street scene at 12 seconds, and the shots of Coney Island from the air. Were they shot with different equipment, or given different post-processing?
Barry, the shot at 0:12 (Times Square) was done with my iPhone. The view of Coney Island was captured with an HD camcorder from Canon - the same one I've used in the past to record the panel/GPS. I agree, these jump out in terms of sharpness and colors. Both of these cameras (iPhone and Canon) have much superior quality over the tiny GoPros. One other thing I started doing not too long ago is apply color correction for exposure and white balance when I edit. It is amazing how much better that makes the final image look. My footage of Manhattan leaves a bit to be desired; the problem was that this flight was fairly early in the morning, so the camera was looking into the rising sun - not good. The New Jersey side looks much sharper and crisper as a result. All in all, a good camera helps, color grading helps, but there is no substitute for good lighting when you record.
Martin Pauly Thanks. My Sony camcorder doesn't come close to your Canon. I will work on my post processing. BTW if you fly the Hudson at 1500 ft in the Bravo and request a Central Park transition to the East River then south down the river, they will usually grant it. Spectacular views of Central Park South and the East Side. U.N., Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport. Next time.
I'm not saying a rolling run-up is ALWAYS the best choice, but it can be. On a busy airport, doing the run-up just before taking the runway is not a good option. Neither is doing it right after engine start when the engine is still cold. Rolling run-ups require more concentration, but they work. If you think otherwise, fly a float plane sometime and report back. :-) Regards, Martin
Did you consider teterboro in new jersey for this trip? They have only private jet traffic so i couldn't imagine the cost would be more than jfk or a hold for traffic from your arrival to jfk video. Teterboro may even be closer to manhattan
Yes, Teterboro would have been closer and less expensive. But on this trip I was specifically looking for the "big airport experience". I've been to Teterboro on a previous trip to New York, and it's a great GA airport.

Bob, 4K is still a challenge for me. I do have one 4K-capable GoPro camera, but the rest of my equipment is "only" HD (1920x1080 resolution). Having said that, HD makes a pretty nice picture. I did make one 4K video a while back from a flight around Chicago, but it was really four HD streams stitched together to form one 4K video.
Martin nice plane . How old is & how long have you owned it ? Is it your first plane ? In case you get sick in the air can your wife take over for you ? Does your plane have auto pilot ?
Martin before you took off from JFK I was wondering why your family and you didn't put on life vests as a precaution in case some thing happened knowing you would be flying over open water for awhile ?

To remain so calm and so focused during your approach and landing at JFK in marginal weather was inspiring. This video of your flight up the Hudson is one of the best I have ever seen and you well know there are a ton of those videos out there. The piano music that you added was the perfect touch especially as you were flying by the World Trade Center Memorial. Very respectfully done my friend. I have subscribed and I am looking forward to your next video.

James, the landing fee was $25 - not too bad for a large airport like JFK. Parking, on the other hand, was pretty expensive. My other JFK video here on TH-cam, the one showing our arrival, shows a copy of the FBO invoice with the fees.
Ah, my hometown. Worked as a paramedic for many years there, mostly in Brooklyn. Will be back for one of my visits this summer, but thanks for the aerial tour. Did you get some decent pizza and bagels during your visit? ;-)
We had some surprisingly cheap and good pizza there, yes. And pretzels from a street vendor that were pretty good, too. I did not try any bagels - is that another New York specialty? All in all, it was a very enjoyable visit. Not sure I'd like to live in a city that big and deal with the traffic all the time, but we'll be back to visit for sure.
Bagels? Oh, most definitely. Nobody makes them like NYC. Best places to get them are in little neighborhood shops, in places like in Brooklyn. I always bring back a dozen or so to Syracuse, where I live, when I'm home in NYC visiting. A little smoked salmon (lox) and cream cheese goes great with them. Manhattan has some good bagel shops, but you have to search them out, and they tend to be pricier. The same for pizza as well.

Loved the low ceiling IFR at CID and the missed approach. Next time you fly over Sumner, wag your wings, my wife grew up there. The music choice on this video going up the Hudson was beautiful. Also loved that you left in the long taxi at JFK on your landing there. Shows the enormity of that airport.

Yes, the Hudson River is a pretty spectacular way to fly and enjoy breathtaking views. Flying along the lake front in Chicago (Lake Michigan) is somewhat similar, though Manhattan is of course quite a bit larger. We are fortunate as US pilots to have the Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) over the Hudson River, giving us the freedom to fly there and enjoy the view.
Interesting I didn;t know that . I lived north of New York City until October ' 97 then I moved to the west coast of Florida over 2 decades ago.
scisimmer Private planes fly over the river, and bays all around NYC. That includes circling Manhattan via the East river and the Hudson river going over the East river bridges and also the GW Bridge. They cannot fly over Manhattan or any of the Bouroghs. Most fly out of Teetobourogh airport in NJ.
@nathankox190; not true, private planes fly over NYC all the time, just not that low, typically.
Pretty common especially during the summer, you can go between the Hudson River and east river over the central park or around battery park, (due to Trump tower TFR I don't know if that is still possible though). During the Summer you see a constant flow of planes coming from FRG or TEB flying around the city. Its a pretty big document for the flight and it involves flying a thousand or so feet under RJ's and 73's into LGA which fly along the river sometimes.
I doubt you could fly GA in and out of LHR (EGLL) as easily a they seemed to let you at Kennedy
Sadly, General Aviation outside of the US is pretty restricted in what they may do.

Happy new year Martin, here I am having a good time with your videos (as usual). This time, I have some questions for you. I'm just trying to know how the "things" works on USA, so, here are the questions:
1.-Is the FBO ramp a non-controlled zone? because you contacted ground just before leaving the ramp. Is this a general case or it depends on the airport?
2.-I've never seen a round up while taxing, is this normal? Why didn't you do the round up at the FBO ramp? any restrinctions?
3.- Ground controller told you "monitor 119.1". I understand when the ATC says monitor, you just have to wait for that ATC facility calls you, but you called the ATC, why?

1. Yes, that's generally the case here. Taxiways and ramps are either "movement areas" under the control of Ground/Tower, or "non movement areas" where you can move around freely. All the FBO ramps I have seen are in the latter category, so no need to call Ground to start moving - not until you get to the movement area.
2. Run-up while taxiing - it's a controversial topic. I see advantages in that there's less worry about people, aircraft, vehicles behind you getting blasted when you rev up the engine (compared with the FBO ramp), and the engine and oil will have had more time to warm up if you delay the run-up. At these large airports, Tower usually expects you to be ready when you get to the departure end of the runway. On the other hand, it does require a lot more focus than doing the run-up while parked.
3. I don't remember exactly how this all unfolded on this particular flight. From the video, I think what happened is I hadn't heard Tower call me when I got to the intersection to which Ground had sent me, so I figured I'll let Tower know I'm ready.

Seems like a lifetime ago I used to fly ATR-42 out of Newark and later 747-100 freighter and 757 freighter from Newark . I prefer living and flying from Wyoming.
I didn't hear any position reports as you flew up the river, did you edit them out? I'm originally from Brooklyn but now live in PA with my 177B Cardinal. Years ago I did fly out of Zahn's airport on LI, long closed, and Flushing in Queens NYC, same fate. Never did the River trip.

I was interest in hearing how that went, too bad. Flushing airport was only a few miles from LaGuardia and the NY chart had a area referred to as the Flushing pie slice that allowed VFR traffic into and out without contacting ATC or the LaGuardia tower, they did ask for a sign off by a CFI though. An ignorant NYC mayor closed it for no reason just like Daley's closing of the airport in Chicago. No hearings, no comment, just the big government hammer.

Living in Maine, kinda tough to do that but if we ever get around to going to NYC, I'll let my family go see "Mama Mia" and I'll find a somebody to take me flying! I'd love to fly it someday but coastal Maine is gonna have to tie me over until that day.

Sehr schön. Based at KUNV in central PA, the Hudson tour is a flying club favorite, and I have landed at Port Clinton as well (and had a burger at the diner!). JFK, on the other hand, would seem unnecessarily stressful. In any case, you made it look like a great experience!
At the end you can see the small museum across from the Bo. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Hogan's Heroes fans will be happy they did.

Hi Andrew, yes, that's kind of automatic when you take-off from an airport with in the Class Bravo surface area, but to dot the i's and cross the t's, they explicitly clear you into the airspace for a VFR departure.

Hi Nathan, glad to hear you like the videos. I have a US private pilot certificate (ASEL) with an instrument rating. In my "former life" in Germany I held a PPL with ratings for airplane, motor glider, glider, and glider instructor, but those are no longer current.
N70TB is a 1978 A36 Bonanza.
What is KPIT like? Are they very busy? Do you know what the fees to land there are?

How much did it cost to land and tie down at JFK?
You can see that at the end of my other Kennedy video (arrival at JFK), where I show the FBO invoice at the end. Parking was very expensive, the rest of the fees were what one would expect for a large airport.

Well, the mags don't know (or care) whether the brakes are set or not, right? :-)
I do this sometimes at larger airports; they hardly ever have run-up pads by the runway, so waiting until just before take-off is not a good option. The FBO ramp sometimes also doesn't have a good place for the run-up, plus the engine is still cold then. Taxi, on the other hand, is often lengthy at these large airports, so why not do the run-up then?

Just curious, since I fly in this area, I didn't hear any of the Hudson self announcing calls? Assuming the music was overlayed so we didn't hear the radio calls, because I would have liked to hear them. Looked busy in there, especially since my preferred method of flying in the Bravo there was not available. 127.85 was actually Newark tower. You handled it well, all those freq changes happening quickly, and right next to a TFR. Plus taxiing solo at JFK is brave, I have to say. Luckily you had that part of the field mostly to yourself, as it's easy to miss the turns or hold shorts (I think you got a hold of the tower just as you hit taxiway N). Very informative. Not cheap. If you come back, try KCDW or KMMU, and I'll give you a ride to the train. :) (in return for a flight in the Bonanza, of course!)

I appreciate your disciplined use of checklists. The VFR flight up the Hudson is an impressive illustration of the beauty of GA. I want to be stunned by the parking fees at JFK, but then I remember what it costs to park a car in Manhattan.

One of your best yet Martin. I particularly enjoy the fact that you include the stressful radio portion in and out of that very busy airspace. Pilots can really empathize and so live in the experience so much more. The footage over New York is awe inspiring and one of the handheld cameras in the back of the plane produced exceptional results (eg. just at Coney Island - @ 16:00). You might consider using it more often In any case, very well done !

Great video. Some of the scenes seemed exceptionally sharp and the colors "popped". Not the usual tinge of blue haze that airborne shots usually suffer from. Like the street scene at 12 seconds, and the shots of Coney Island from the air. Were they shot with different equipment, or given different post-processing?
Barry, the shot at 0:12 (Times Square) was done with my iPhone. The view of Coney Island was captured with an HD camcorder from Canon - the same one I've used in the past to record the panel/GPS. I agree, these jump out in terms of sharpness and colors. Both of these cameras (iPhone and Canon) have much superior quality over the tiny GoPros.
One other thing I started doing not too long ago is apply color correction for exposure and white balance when I edit. It is amazing how much better that makes the final image look.
My footage of Manhattan leaves a bit to be desired; the problem was that this flight was fairly early in the morning, so the camera was looking into the rising sun - not good. The New Jersey side looks much sharper and crisper as a result.
All in all, a good camera helps, color grading helps, but there is no substitute for good lighting when you record.

BTW if you fly the Hudson at 1500 ft in the Bravo and request a Central Park transition to the East River then south down the river, they will usually grant it. Spectacular views of Central Park South and the East Side. U.N., Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport. Next time.

Rolling run up ? I just feel for his pax .
I'm not saying a rolling run-up is ALWAYS the best choice, but it can be. On a busy airport, doing the run-up just before taking the runway is not a good option. Neither is doing it right after engine start when the engine is still cold.
Rolling run-ups require more concentration, but they work. If you think otherwise, fly a float plane sometime and report back. :-)

Did you consider teterboro in new jersey for this trip? They have only private jet traffic so i couldn't imagine the cost would be more than jfk or a hold for traffic from your arrival to jfk video. Teterboro may even be closer to manhattan
Yes, Teterboro would have been closer and less expensive. But on this trip I was specifically looking for the "big airport experience". I've been to Teterboro on a previous trip to New York, and it's a great GA airport.

What happen to the 4K video
Bob, 4K is still a challenge for me. I do have one 4K-capable GoPro camera, but the rest of my equipment is "only" HD (1920x1080 resolution). Having said that, HD makes a pretty nice picture. I did make one 4K video a while back from a flight around Chicago, but it was really four HD streams stitched together to form one 4K video.

Ah, my hometown. Worked as a paramedic for many years there, mostly in Brooklyn. Will be back for one of my visits this summer, but thanks for the aerial tour. Did you get some decent pizza and bagels during your visit? ;-)
We had some surprisingly cheap and good pizza there, yes. And pretzels from a street vendor that were pretty good, too. I did not try any bagels - is that another New York specialty?
All in all, it was a very enjoyable visit. Not sure I'd like to live in a city that big and deal with the traffic all the time, but we'll be back to visit for sure.
Bagels? Oh, most definitely. Nobody makes them like NYC. Best places to get them are in little neighborhood shops, in places like in Brooklyn. I always bring back a dozen or so to Syracuse, where I live, when I'm home in NYC visiting. A little smoked salmon (lox) and cream cheese goes great with them. Manhattan has some good bagel shops, but you have to search them out, and they tend to be pricier. The same for pizza as well.
