I'm just 12 and I've been doing magic for about 7 months. I've been struggling to get gimmicks, since I'm so young, and I can only get gimmicks so often. I try to keep all my tricks impromptu and only involving a regular deck of playing cards. Do I want a million gimmicks that are awesome real badly? Of course. But can I get great reactions and still pursue magic without gimmicks? Of course. In conclusion, I absolutely love gimmicks and use a very few amount of them, but I still survive without them. And what you do in magic should really be mostly sleight of hand in my opinion, to have "skill".
P.S. I love your videos Chris and have been a part of the channel since 40k. :) Your cards are frickin dope.

All the magic in the world at our fingertips and the most magical thing for me was the neon creations. I never knew what an intriguing art it was. That’s amazing. Also I would recommend a small neon box. It covers the black wire covers nicely. Hides extra wires and gives it a more readable text because of her black backdrop. But it’s awesome

Man I can't get enough of these videos. So inspirations! For me, I started heavy with gimmicks. I loved the self working stuff built into a gimmick even more. Got some stuff from Ellisonist, Card Shark, Murphy's...all of em. I started to realize a lot of people I performed for always wanted to see or inspect. In close up and walk-around...I found there's a problem with saying "no" or not being allowed to show the spectator. It's not the worst but I'd does take away from the "magic." I recently attended a lecture by Daryl and learned his insight to ending clean. I then though by his lecture, use a gimmick or method to reinforce the disbelief they already have to amplify the effect. Instead of starting the routine with the method...start with the effect. Prime example: in Professor's Nightmare...start by showing the ropes equal length, then finishing the famous routine with the ropes different lengths...you hide the method in the effect. If gimmicks can be used in the same way...presto. If we use them as a tool and not as the effect I think they're great. Ok...rant over. But the short answer is I use gimmicks often as long as I can ditch them or hide them well.

Personal I love gimmicks, sometimes you can make miracles with them. But I do love sleights hand as well. Just like Joshua Jay once said, if the method for making the the effect most amazing is the gimmick, I well definitely use a gimmick. If just use pure sleights of hand is best way to make the effect astonishing, I will use sleights. My point is whether use a gimmick or not depend on which one make the effect better and cleaner.

I started out very limited with available supplies, and cards in Portland, I was homeless and preformed at Lloyd center to make extra cash, but over the last 12 years I've purchased several ellusionist products, and made some pretty solid routines, gimmicks can be great, but in retrospect, a deck of cards, a marker and some people to perform for is all I need to not only put a smile on someone's face, but love doing what I do, thanks for the video's Chris, can't wait to see more!!!!

    Abra Kedabra - אברא כדברא
That's in Hebrew, originated form the anciet Aramaic which is an antique jewish spoken language in babylon like 2000 years ago.
אברא - Abra, or more accurately pronnounced "Evra" means - "I will create" (=Create-invents, like when god creates)
כדברא - Kadabra, or more accurately - Kedabra means - "within my speak".
So together it's "I shall create within my speak"

Hey Chris, long time fan, love your videos!!! So keep up the awesome work!
I've been doing magic on and off for about 2 years, but i've sort of kept to like a couple of tricks, because I really just use magic as an ice breaker (i'm really shy/nervous around people). The main gimmicks I use are loops, duplicate cards and funnily enough red pill :p , trying to broaden my horizons now and learn as much as I can about magic, and your channel is a big help/inspiration. So just wanted to say thanks!

I've been practicing magic since August last year. I love the advice you gave me. I really take it to heart. I have bought a few gimmicks , double cross being my favorite one. I've purchased mirage and the gimmicks that come in "How To Be A Magician." I never thought of not watching the tutorials though lol I love impromptu magic because I enjoy the practice honestly. Think you hit the nail on the head. Time and place for gimmicks. Impromptu stuff always hits the ball out of the park along with mentalism. I thought I was the only crazy person not to watch the tutorial, I like to see what works for me. If I draw blanks on how I can fit it into my personality, then I'll watch the tutorial.

gimmicks can be such a powerful tool but sometimes I feel like I am cheating. I do a trick I called time traveller but at the end of day half of the card are double backed but people say it blows them away. where I also do the Jay sankey trick ripping the 2 cards up and restoring them giving me a higher sense of achievement and there is no gimmick involved. I think there is a fine line.

Hedge Hog I was about to say the same thing. I think performing a trick without a gimmick gives one more satisfaction because you didn't "cheat", and did everything on your own. For me performing to someone is not only about the reaction of the person, but also if I feel I did the performance and the trick right or not.

    • @yohanmarkose7245
      @yohanmarkose7245 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

bubby bumble I guess it's not about using a gimmick but about whether u worked to get a good reaction . in the sense , I feel more satisfied if u had to practice a lot in mastering the gimmick or a routine which uses a gimmick and then got a good reaction.

You feel like cheating? Then don't do card tricks at all, or magic for that matter because we are "cheating" everytime we do a sleight of hand. Eitherway, the spectators DO NOT and WILL NEVER know how the trick is done whether you are using a gimmick of not. Our ultimate goal is to entertain, suspend their beliefs, make them wonder. It doesn't matter if you use gimmicks or not.

he just said that gimmicks are created by the items themselves...wich I didnt know / realise.. and it opens tons of clues on how some tricks could work.
You won't do gimmicks with a pack of cards you just got from the dollarstore... the pack of cards needs to be adjusted physically for the card trick to work.
And I don't know what you're looking to get out of a magics blog about gimmicks
Did you think he would teach us is how to cure cancer or some deep shit like that ?

I'm telling you, as long as you do a pocket deck switch, as in take the deck after the performance and put it away, saying "Alright guys, I'm sorry, but I've got to go... ah, one more trick"
just put the gimicked deck in your pocket, and then out of the same pocket or pull out a normal deck.
The only problem now is having something that's powerful enough to followup Svengali.

Nice video with solid advice, but there are a few things that might be troublesome.
Some gimmicks may last you a lifetime only if handled properly, but not so much if you start trying to discover the secrets by yourself and end up breaking things. Usually the only disclaimer you get is obviously within the explanation. So above all, be careful when doing such. I have heard far too often that people broke their gimmicks upon playing around with it before diving into the explanations, and although sometimes the case, it would often not be because of these gimmicks being poorly constructed.
I like the suggestion of not watching the explanation otherwise, but that also means you shouldn't watch the trailer, so basically you would need to buy gimmicks solely based on their descriptions, which I suppose doesn't really work out. I think watching either or is fine, as long as you make it your own and adjust it accordingly in the end. It goes for all magic, regardless of whether it includes gimmicks or not.
Also, I think the "thank you for the inspiration by the way, keep your gimmick" is good but only if you actually buy the product to find out how it works, to support the person for giving you the inspiration, and to perhaps find out more about its history and origins.
I find there are too many gimmicks that work solely on camera without having such a disclaimer and often with misleading performances. I think that the majority of performing or "older" magicians think these are no good for that very reason. They might very well like the effect and see how it could add to their repertoire, but then upon receiving it or hearing more about it find out it's of absolutely no use in the real world. That doesn't make the gimmicks bad by any means, but the marketing of it might very well be if it comes with no such disclaimer.

Also, and please don't get me wrong, but I really wish you had done the tiniest bit more research into the definition of Abracadabra. It seems that you got it from a widespread image containing a somewhat faulty translation claiming that it's Hebrew.

I don't have a gimmick and don't plan on getting one. I find that magicians are leaning too much on gimmicks these days. So I try what I can with a normal deck of cards.

Same here. Bought an invisible deck once but its been sitting in my cabinet ever since. The most gimmick-y I get is maybe with a double backer but even then, I barely use it.

Curtis Lee I like to mix the two. I use a few heavy gaff cards, and some outright gimmicks. They can be a great way to catch a break in a show without breaking the flow as well. Whenever I'm tired, or I want to chill for a set up, I'll just do one of my gimmicks tricks to kick up the energy and push the show forward, while still getting a quick breather. I especially love Magix (purchasable at ellusionist) and the wonderful Double Cross effect is great for a quick walkaround trick.

I feel it's good for those "WUT" tricks but a LOT of people think you're doing gimmicks, so I do try to learn tricks without using gimmicked cards. I use doubles but as an amateur I would prefer not falling into the lazy magician style where a trick is basically always done and you aren't under any real pressure to make the trick perfect.
Gimmicks are good for professionals only, imo, the ones that have gone through the wringer, that have experienced the fear of fucking up, have fucked up and become amazing magician's that can work on the fly.
If you're an amateur just starting out, I feel you'll only end up relying on gimmicks and doing other tricks will just become too difficult.
Professionals should only utilize gimmicks because they can do without, amateurs should never touch the things because they may end up leaning on it, and becoming the magician you are talking about.

Hey Chris, just want to say that you are totally right about being creative. Thinking of or getting inspired by an effect. I bought red pill when it came out, however before it arrived I already came up with a cool gimmick that I was very proud of and have been using it ever since achieving your effect and many others. I rarely use gimmicks when I perform, I love coming up with effects with sleights that I've created and testing them out on people. However something always carry with is the advocate and skim'n ems. Thanks mate, I appreciate all of your content.

Another great vid man, I personally start magic not wanting to use gimmicks, I wanted to just know that i could impress and stun with my slieght of hand work alone. But ive learned that using a gimmick properly also requires great sleight of hand as well so they have slowly entered my magic life if that all makes sense. Appreciate your insight as always!

Hey Chris, I can't lie when I started magic gimmicks were the one thing I never really saw use in (mainly as I only did standard card tricks with no need for gimmicks) but now 1 year down the line a few of the tricks I've created have involved gimmicks and I seem to growing to them a lot more. Also your tip on not watching the method for gimmicks, I never really thought of doing before but it's actually quite true, just that extra little thing to help bring your own style into magic. Love your videos, thanks for the inspiration!

I started watching this video with a preconceived notion that you would demonstrate some gimmicks. You didn't. But I was definitely NOT disappointed. Your philosophy of how to use gimmicks and creatively integrate them into routines is so much more valuable than showing us individual gimmicks. Thanks.

Chris, I've been doing magic for a little over ten years and when I started I definitely had all my jacket pockets overflowing with decks and gimmicks galore! Nowadays I just walk around with a deck and some coins. Unless I get a new gimmick or trick that I'm trying out for people and then I'll carry that around for a while. One thing that I do to spark creativity is to do an effect which uses a gimmick and then find ways to achieve the same effect with pure sleight of hand or using a different method all together. I would LOVE to see more about your creative process. I always dig your magic and the way you present it in your videos. Always a pleasure sir!

I’ve really Been into gimmicks for as long as I can remember because it definitely stands out and pops more as well as my personality so it feels more than just a prop. The gimmicks I purchase genuinely feel like it’s an extension of myself being bold unique and different. I have found just with watching trailers to products I have bought, I already start thinking how I could make the gimmick more suitable for my peers friends and family. An example was when I took a gimmick like the ‘ignition key’ and a thin magnetic wallet you can get from any clothing store and create a whole show around those two item. I remember did a original routine with the wallet and ignition key which helped Segway into my next effect using the ‘loops’ system by yigal mesika with the money I had in my wallet. I do appreciate you mentioning and encouraging others to not watch the method because it does lead into thinking of what your limits are versus letting your creativity being the dominant side of how you perform and create ideas of your own. I will say that some may steer more towards gimmicks that are utilized for card tricks and others like myself more towards wearable or practical things you can find anywhere in the places you normally go to like a coffee shop or office. Chris have you created your own original gimmick before? If so, what all did you do that resulted in achieving your idea? It would be awesome to see you do a video creating a gimmick of your own on camera to help startups magicians or even those that already perform to help grow the magic community and inspire the art of magic!

I struggled with the double backers, whether to keep them in or not. I now decided to keep them in and during any handling of the cards whether actively practicing a trick using it or doing light cardistry, I try to keep track of it. I think I challenges me to pay more attention to what my hands are doing and where the DB is in the deck and it allows me to make a routine a bit more unbelievable considering its been in there the whole time but I manage to hide it or show it at will based on the performance. Just my own way of teaching myself. Thanks.

I've only just started doing magic professionally (pushed mainly because of watching you, so thank you) and I take a regular deck with Revolution inside, an Omni deck, a coin shell, and a few dupes of the same colour back and different colour backs. Need to slimline the whole thing a bit more, I think.

Hey Chris, i love the videos you are doing. I feel like i am learning a lot from the tutorials your are doing. I have one trick that i have set in stone on how to do, and others I have messed around with. I use a stripper deck for a fun gimmick, some shuffling to keep the bottom and top card where they are, and use this all to do a double predictions using a controlled force.
