2014 / 2015 Cadillac CTS V Sport Review and Road Test

  • Let's be honest, it has been quite some time since Cadillac has been "the Cadillac" of anything. With the 2014 CTS V-Sport, Cadillac is aiming to turn the clock back to Cadillac's heyday. The 2014 V-Sport isn't the value option in the segment and it isn't even the cheapest option when you really think about it. Instead Cadillac has done something that many detractors thought impossible for an American brand: they quite simply made the better sedan. The 2014 V-Sport may bring a V6 to a V8 fight, but after a week with Caddy's new sport sedan it was easy to pick the winner. Unless you're looking to deck your BMW, Mercedes or Audi up with rare and expensive options, the CTS does just about everything the Germans can only better. Are you shocked? I was. Join me to find out more.

      I’m considering a 2015, how is the maintenance pricing and have you had any issues with the reliability?

      @@MakeItMakeSensemims I owned a 2015 and had good luck when it comes to reliability. The big issue was the touch screen failed, which is common for multiple Cadillacs from that time. Other then that mostly just normal wear and tear, but the shock/struts are expensive and prone to relatively early failure. I had it till 85k miles when someone ran a red light and totaled it. I am looking for a replacement 2018 or 2019, so I highly recommend.

    Alex - Was in the market for a mid-size, 4-door luxury sedan and considered the BMW 550i, Audi A6, Mercedes Benz E550, Cadillac CTS and the Chevrolet SS. Had tested each car multiple times at their respective dealerships and every single car had left me impressed (for different reasons). Since this would be our family sedan primarily used by my wife and myself (with occasional backseat passengers), high priorities included luxury, comfort and performance. Each one of these vehicles makes a great argument to support my priorities and I truly feel that we would have been happy had we purchased any one of these. In the end, after much data crunching, we elected to purchase the CTS Vsport Premium. All of the vehicles I mentioned offer similar, but different amenities. Where the CTS Vsport stood out was in its outright ability to handle curves. In this category, it seemed to me to be several notches above the others. I've only driven the car for ~5k miles, but those are some of the best miles I have ever driven. As for CUE, it took me ~2 weeks to become acquainted with the capacitive controls and memorize the screen outputs for links/icons that often change their location depending on the screen shot. The trick to using the slide control is to not treat it like a smartphone screen. Instead, it requires a bit more deliberation. I absolutely love CUE now but my personal preference remains knobs and controls. Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase and I'm starting to discipline myself from wanting to dispatch asphalt every time I'm behind the wheel of this car. When driven at a normal pace, the car is an amazing capsule of silence, luxury and comfort. I need to discover that side more often, not easy to do with this car! Excellent review as always, have seen just about every video you created and consider you many notches above the rest as well!

      @@THE_CHOAS_ENGINE If you don't know what I'm talking about, I won't be able to reach you in an meaningful way, sorry. A 4cyl will ALWAYS rev higher on the highway than a corresponding year/make/model with a larger engine with more cylinders. If you don't know this, please educate yourself on basic physics. Additionally, those added revs and having to work harder means more stress on components. Every 4cyl I've had burns more oil than the 6 & 8 cyl engines I've had. You trade off getting mpg for higher revs and more wear. it's common sense, actually...

    Excellent Review as usual. Always enjoy your "trunk comfort index", I wish you could add a golf club test: seeing if trunk and trunk opening is wide enough to fit golf clubs.
    I love this CTS and have driven on recently at Caddy dealer. I would like to buy a CTS-Vsport but don't think trunk opening is wide enough to place one set of golf clubs parallel in the trunk. I can fit 4 sets of clubs parallel in my Pontiac G8 GXP trunk.

    I haven't even see one of these (mk3 CTS in general) on the streets yet in Toronto, not even a 3.6 or a 2.0T. I almost believed Cadillac doesn't even sell the CTS V-sport in Canada until I checked GM's website.
    On the bright side, that means Cadillac is HEAVILY discounting CTS here. A quick scan at a local GM dealership shows the V-sport receiving nearly a ~15% mark-down vs. MSRP. So getting a car sticker from factory at $82k and leaving the dealership paying only ~$60k feels like a good deal to me (since a E350 and 535i cost nearly $10k more, not to mention the E550 or 550i which can reach $90k figures with options.)

    I thought this was one of the most beautiful cars back in 2013 when these first came out & it still is! My boss bought a lightly used blue 2019 CTS 2.0T which replaced his old 2004 Acura TL, but I would go for at least the base 3.6L V6. I own one of its competitors, a 2016 Lexus GS350 F-Sport that I bought last year which I absolutely love the car, but would have also looked into buying a CTS if they were as reliable as Lexus.

    Alex! How can you hand the Smart Key back after driving this? As always I was excited to hear your thoughts on the CTS V Sport and I know you tell it like it is and I am so glad Cadillac is hitting some Home Runs! Damn, we need quality back in this country. When I get in my '05 Impala LS with Sport Package I still like the looks of the car but when I open the door and see a sea of cheap materials it makes me cringe. I do get good MPG for a large car still. Up to 36.5 HWY. and 19/20 CITY.

    Alex, since you asked re styling: I've admired the Cadillac "stealth bomber" angular sculpting since it was introduced. I have disliked the big V center brake light just as much for just as long. It's always felt to me like some questionable after-market customizing: slightly trashy and scene stealing. When you have great lines, you don't have to hang ornaments on them.
    On that note, the front detailing (as on the Elmiraj concept) carries a little too much chrome for my taste.
    Excellent review again. As always, you can tell a person a lot more in a 20 minute review than a 4 minute once-over of a few features.

  • @zxbc1

    Nice Mazda key fob in the center console :P
    On a serious note, great review. I do wish, however, that you can go over the safety and convenience technologies in the cars you review in a more detailed way. I know you do a lot of them in the infotainment system review, but many of the features nowadays (like blind spot monitoring, auto braking, cameras and night vision, lane keeping, etc.) are really standard and integral to the car as a whole, and some of them are of great importance to buyers in this day and age.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll see what I can come up with. Would you like this in a separate video, or would you be OK with making these main videos 7-9 minutes longer?

    • @zxbc1
      @zxbc1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos I personally don't mind if the video is longer, but a separate video wouldn't be a terribly bad idea.
      The reason I ask is because you can always pull up a spreadsheet or comparison chart to compare the (existence of) technologies, but just like with space and ergonomics, the way the technology is implemented is just as important as what the technology is. For instance, many of the lane keeping techs nowadays automatically steer for you, and how effectively they do it varies. Also, some have a passive collision warning, some would actually brake for you; some adaptive cruise controls are very responsive to cars cutting in or out of your lane, while others are sluggish. Other things like how the bi-xenon headlight performs, how well the seat heating/cooling works, how the blindspot monitoring or auto park features work, etc. I just feel that these are things that often get overlooked or cast aside as peripherals, but actually greatly affect the quality of life for the driver.

Although the shoulders have more room It didn't offer more comfort to wider folks that I had sit in the seat because the seat's bolstering was too narrow.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      6'5" is a problem. You have a better chance in the CTS than in most vehicles in this segment, but you may be better suited by something larger. Luxury or near luxury RWD in the same price range leaves you with the Hyundai Genesis or Chrysler 300.

      Alex on Autos Thank you Alex it’s rare that I wish I was shorter because I really want a CTS-V Sport. I did test drive the Genesis 5.0 but I was not in love with its steering wheel (plastic feel). I have watched your review of the 300 SRT8 several times and it’s a great option.
      Please review the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT soon.

    I find Cadillac's branding for CTS confusing:
    $45K CTS (Sedan, Coupe, Wagon)
    $60K CTS Vsport (Sedan)
    $64K CTS-V (Sedan, Coupe, Wagon)
    $70K CTS Vsport Premium (Sedan)
    What's the connection between Vsport and "-V"? Has Cadillac run out of letters, so they had to reuse the "V" in different permutations? Is "V" the new "X"?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The CTS-V is the confusing one here because it is still the last generation CTS and that's why it is cheaper. The "new" CTS-V expected soon will be more expensive than the V-Sport. V-Sport is meant to me akin to BMW's M-Sport and Audi's "S" badges vehicles delivering a sportier experience but not to the same level as M/AMG/RS. The V (when it finally lands) will be that M/AMG/RS competitor.

    Other than size, how is this compared to the M5? The M3 probably out performs it other than maybe in a straight line.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CTS V-Sport competed with the 550, the M5 is much faster. The Cadillac CTS V which has yet to be released (the current V is the old model) should compete very well with the M5.

    Nice, but 72K? Seems the CTS-V is a much better value. It's too bad the VSport is so expensive, the value used to be a major draw.

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BMW 550i w/ the performance handling package brings it to $68K ($64K without it), the E550 is $62K and the CTS V Sport is $57K, the $70K version is the Premium version which comes with more luxury items including stuff like active braking, smart cruise control, etc. It's the same with the E550 to add that stuff is another $5K, not including other luxury items. So basically Just get the CTS V Sport that cost $57K and you'll have the more sporty luxury car of the bunch for a lot less.

    LCD or TFT or whatever they are instrument clusters may be cool and central touch or controller run screens have been in all cars above the lower price class, but for those who don't trade in every few years there is definitely expensive trouble up ahead. It's one thing if some power window quits on your older car, but if the instruments or controls are out you are kind of out of luck. And then a non-mechanical repair for two or three or more thousand dollars?
    Are there any laptops out there more than a few years old? My hp just dropped dead and a repair would have cost more than a new one and the repair guy said it probably wouldn't last long anyway. Everything going wrong with it I mentioned (several) elicited a "yup, that happens to all of them" nod from the repair guy.

    This vehicle cannot be had in AWD. That is a glaring negative for some potential buyers and is unlike its closest rivals - i.e. 550i, E550, S6, GS.
    And, 18 inch wheels with no option for 19's or 20's? (direct from website). Hmmm.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a lover of AWD I am quite torn on this. I like the fact that BMW allows you to choose but I'm less keen on Audi and Mercedes forcing you to have AWD with the high output engine. I would not be surprised if Cadillac offered AWD in the V-Sport at some point after the new CTS-V lands.

    The biggest gripe about this car was
    1. Transmission, way way slower than ZF of BMW and DSG of Audi but faster then Mercedes and almost same as Jag

      Ponygt 662 they are improved , that doesn't mean they are as good as European and Japanese cars . You americans lost all reality , patriotic delusional tools. German cars are better in cornering, better quality, refined, believe me nobody buys them here and even in America if someone has money they all would buy an Audi, Mercedes, BMW, VW, Porsche, Nissan (GTR), hell every Japanese car is better build, so you can keep your poor mens garbage American cars
