Hey John, can you please do a video where you show us how to port forward by Mac address for multiple consoles like multiple Xboxes and a PS4 on the Netgear r7000? I would really appreciate it!
I lowered my mtu down because of packet loss using a dual band router as an access point through a dual antenna two way extender that is connecting my router to a main router over 1000 ft away. Getting 50 Mbs Down, 18 Up, with a 10 to 15 ms ping. 5g wifi using Ipv6 through Starlink ISP. Best Dns server I have found, is the new; Control D (unfiltered) or Control D + Ads & Tracking. Question about changing MTU size. You said to change it on the device you're playing with but what if i'm playing on my PC and i get disconnected frequently from Cod: Warzone. What should I lower it to? Thanks in advance.. Also, my QOS does not have an advanced option, only a button to enable it. I updated to the most recent version just in case that was the issue. hey i love you channel i was wondering if maybe you made any videos that have to do with the R8000 or if they are pretty much the same? and i would really love to try and make my internet run better or at least setup which devices get internet first or the most power or anything like that. thanks so much have a good one. :)
I game in a room two rooms away from my XR500 and purchased a 100ft CAT7 cable to reach. With this cord I have an excess of about 50ft in cabling. Do you think getting a more reasonable length with less excess would help my ping latency. Usually getting around 30-50ms
I need help. Both me and my friends we are on nat type 2. But can't join each other room. I had all my setting right fir gaming. Upnp enable, add ip address, and connect directly.
I've tried google, open, and cloudfare dns to see if changed download speeds, which is did. My isp dns was around 43ms and the other 3 are at 21so it was ideally "faster" but then I saw 4.2.2.1 and I tried it. It boosted my upload speeds and I had a 21 ping to it. But my question is this, semi unrelated, when you do buffer bloat testing, do you let dslreports select your servers or do you choose them? I've used googles in the past but it's not even the closest serve to me and could add slight jitter or BB because of distance. I'm closest to Texas so ideally I'd want to use them instead but I just wanted your opinion.
How do you get a 1000mbps upload speed? Mine is 10mbps.. 😅. Also, I've been looking everywhere for the bridge/router mode stuff and you finally answered my question ;)
I didn't buy that exact router but I do have the Netgear nighthawk ax3000. I also live in a 1300 square foot house so I should have no problem with gaming but I did want to tell you one console and living room is wired the other one in the bedroom is wireless I think running them both the same time should be fine correct
Hello John. I can't find routers with SQM, only with QoS. Is that still enough to get an A+ Bufferbloat rating instead of my current B, and basically prioritize cloud gaming servers (virtual private servers / cloud computers) ?
Question‼️👏🏻... Have a r7300 Netgear Nighthawk, THEE EXACT same setup that you have in terms of router software/interface, I did the Fortnite port forwarding, watched literallly every single one of your vids✊🏻🙏🏻. But when I check the ports on port checker/network Utilities app, they say “ports not reachable/not open”...... Does that matter? Or did that same thing happen to you?.. Help me out👍🏻*Note- I’m not a bot when it comes to tech*
I've never used port checker tools. Port forwarding is very hard to mess up if you know what you're doing so personally I forward ports and trust they are open. I know it works cause I've gone from moderate to open nat many times in vids just from port forwarding
Sometimes your ISP will run your connection through their own NAT on addition to your own routers NAT. Often times they just do it for tests and forget to turn it off so try calling them and see if they can turn it off for you.
Ok, question, I have the netgear r6900v2, newest firmware and all that. I've enabled my ps4 to have highest priority and renamed the device as PS4 in qos settings, but when I go back to the basic tab and click attached devices is never shows the ps4 with the new name, it's still listed as unknown. Am I doing something wrong here or is that just how it is?
I don’t know if you will see this but I’m at my wits end, I got a new router checked all the settings and can’t figure it out, I can talk in party chat just fine but not game chat at all, I can’t hear anything from others and it shows my mic is muted... it’s for multiple games. What could it be (ps4) I have tried everything...
Playstation recommends establishing these ports for the PS4 for a start: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 UDP: 3478, 3479 There are other ports which you can also open such as: TCP: 1935 UDP: 3074 Maybe those will help?

@john glasscock, I have a xr300, could you explain the qos slider a little more?? Say I put the slider at 70% am I limiting the bandwidth to other devices or to my Xbox which I want prioritized? Also do you have a more in depth video on port forwarding?
Just found this video as Ive been struggling to keep a strong wifi connection on my ps4. Even though I should have my PS5 on release day and Im sure the upgraded tech will make a difference, I still decided to tinker with these settings to see if it will help in the meantime. I want to play it safe so I am only messing with QOS to prioritze my ps4, port forward and disable UPnP. Ill come back and edit if there is a difference. EDIT: I didnt want to port forward for every online game I play, so I ended up just enabling QoS for my PS4 and disabled 20/40mhz coexistence as I heard that disabling the latter could help. I also got an extender that Im going to ethernet my ps4 into. We will see how it goes!
Appreciate the content, would it be more advantageous to run your ps4 through a router or through the network switch? The nighthawk s8000 does give me some qos functionality.
Hey John, this comment may not be seen but my question is finer internet that’s hooked up to a ARRIS SB8200 with a Netgear Nighthawk R7800 (soon to be upgraded to a XR500) or fiber internet with AT&T? Your thoughts?
John Glasscock true, and John you know what I’ve noticed? Is that yes you can subscribe to Comcast and get let’s say, a 400MBPS down and 25 upload, (what I have) just regularly. They’ll cap you at one terabyte of data for the month and if you go over you have to pay. Thing is, whenever I speed test on my modem when I’m hardwired directly to it, it got only 80-120MBPS download while 25 upload, and yes I know in the real time you won’t get all of your bandwidth but what I’m trying to say is if you subscribe to their unlimited data plan, you’ll get a more consistent stream of data to your modem to supply your network with. Now when I speed text my modem I’m getting all my bandwidth, and even doing more well in games, consistently, than I already have. It’s a theory but worth trying it out. I upgraded my modem and router to the latest firmware and when the router was connected to the modem, without the unlimited data plan, it got my full bandwidth but it wasn’t consistent all the time even though it was great internet. Now, I get it consistently. Looks like they’re holding out imo until you subscribe. Just a thought, hope you have a good Christmas my guy!
@@Altruistic9 well you could always try fiber and if you dont like it switch back. The speeds are reliable and I've never had an outage. Also, no data cap whatsoever
What is the best router for around 120 dollars to get like a constant 20 ping for Fortnite, I live 10 miles from servers so that’s not a problem but I still get like 70 ping and don’t know why
AlexDutyMTB A new router is not gonna lower your ping to 20, it is really your ISP and how fast they can transfer the data between servers. A routerwon’t change that speed.
hey, I had a question regarding QOS on R700. When I put dynamic it allows me to control down and up speeds. I have 500 down and 20 up from my isp, but when I input 80% of that and run a dsl test the bufferbloat is bad. I have to reduce the speed to 300 for it to be good. Also You said to use dynamic QOS its better. SInce I have 20 upload and the only option is "uplink" it sets it to around 12-15 mbps and that also locks my download speed to that. it takes forever to download things.
It's your Default gateway, it's basically the ip addres of your router witch have all the features from your isp, like dns, mtu, dmz ect.... this google dns gets your internet slower i tried it tho. And iam An IT graduates i know what about Networking.
Hello, I've enjoyed watching many of your videos. I'm hoping you can confirm a few things. I have an Arris Xb6 and I am going to be buying the Netgear s8000 and r7000. Is your router the r7000 P 2300 or the r7000 ac1900 ? Is there a difference, does it matter which one I get ? I only ask because your Amazon link goes to the Xr500. If I understand correctly I don't put the Arris Xb6 in Bridge Mode with it going to Netgear s8000 for Qos with the r7000 in AP mode. Is this correct ? Thank You for you time sir.
Or would it be better to get the xr500 and put my Arris XB6 in bridge mode. You have mentioned before that it cuts your speeds but below you replied to butcherx that Duma OS is a game changer and you would use it if your ISP supported Native bridge mode. My arris XB6 does bridge mode with a tap of a button but I cannot find if it is "Native Bridge Mode" What is Native Bridge Mode and do you know off hand if the Arris XB6 has it ? I've been googling it but can't find out.
Yeah you're pretty much spot on with everything. Sorry about that, yeah mine is the ac1900. In my opinion if your provider let's go change your modem I'd recommend a cm1000 and xr500 instead. A switch and AP is really only useful for more complex networks or people who cannot use their own modem
Hey I tried to use auto detect and config for ipv6 but my Xbox series x still is on ipv4. My isp does support ipv6 so I have no idea what’s wrong. Can someone help
Lowering the MTU from 1500 to 800 before you paly GTA 5 online will 100% load you into a solo public lobby good for grinding. If anyone joins they most likely will leave before they're actually in the lobby with you. If you have a friend join they might be able to stay in for a lil bit but as soon as you are near each other one of you will end up in story mode an the way to fix that start the lobby with 800MTU invite your friend. Once your friend is in the lobby you should leave an set your MTU back to 1500 an join your friend. Once you're both in the lobby both of you need go to your online settings an appear offline. Appearing offline will let you keep a solo public lobby for longer. But as soon as someone joins and decide to stay, if they're not offline like you are there their friends will get put in or someone from their community or friends of friends will join an once that happens it's the snowball effect before long it'll be a full lobby. Some people just kick the random but I think it's a dick thing to do

If you use your router in AP mode you can’t fine tune any of the things you described in this video.. what do u do then?
Question about changing MTU size. You said to change it on the device you're playing with but what if i'm playing on my PC and i get disconnected frequently from Cod: Warzone. What should I lower it to? Thanks in advance..
Also, my QOS does not have an advanced option, only a button to enable it. I updated to the most recent version just in case that was the issue. I have the R7000P, Maybe that's why.
Great audio and video ❤
hey i love you channel i was wondering if maybe you made any videos that have to do with the R8000 or if they are pretty much the same? and i would really love to try and make my internet run better or at least setup which devices get internet first or the most power or anything like that. thanks so much have a good one. :)
Sir does static ip good for gaming than dynamic ip ? Plss help
I game in a room two rooms away from my XR500 and purchased a 100ft CAT7 cable to reach. With this cord I have an excess of about 50ft in cabling. Do you think getting a more reasonable length with less excess would help my ping latency. Usually getting around 30-50ms
No
Awesome vid, currently i forwarded my ports forward for 1 game, you mention to disable upnp, does this mean nothing else will work except the game?
Thanks for a great video👍 when you open ports do you write the same IP adress as you have on your ps4?
Yes but make sure your PS4 Is a fixed static IP otherwise it can change after the DHCP lease expires
I alaways have the same IP on My ps so I think its static?
I didn't buy that exact router but I do have the Netgear nighthawk ax3000. I also live in a 1300 square foot house so I should have no problem with gaming but I did want to tell you one console and living room is wired the other one in the bedroom is wireless I think running them both the same time should be fine correct
Hello John. I can't find routers with SQM, only with QoS. Is that still enough to get an A+ Bufferbloat rating instead of my current B, and basically prioritize cloud gaming servers (virtual private servers / cloud computers) ?
I’m currently using the Verizon fios router. Are they actual routers for gaming ? If so which are the best ?
Netgear nighthawk or asus routers
About to get this router, still viable option in 2019? Currently using ISP provided modem/router, and wanting better ping in CoD.
IIJ3R3MYII I have the router and it’s sweet. 30 ping ain’t too bad
Should i put WAN in the forwarding or Lan as subnet mask? idk the difference .. plz answer !!
I found the number one horizon here !
@@lotfichell6634 Omg bro that was so old 😭😭😭
Ok, question, I have the netgear r6900v2, newest firmware and all that.
Playstation recommends establishing these ports for the PS4 for a start:
TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
UDP: 3478, 3479
There are other ports which you can also open such as:
TCP: 1935
UDP: 3074
Maybe those will help?
What about DTIM interval 1, 35 or 255
I hope I get a WiFi Cord for Christmas
How come you want to disable upnp if you use port forwarding? You didn't explain why
By the way,..How to change ur time zone?? & Thanks for the great vids.
I keep getting routed to a custom match in multi player games through parental controls where should I look?
???
hi glasscock i was just wondering if you think the tp link c2600 is a good router. i currently have a netgear d7000 and a xr500 but optic hecz said that netgear router arent that good. i was wondering whats another good router to get other than a netgear product. love the vid keep it up :)
What was his reason why they weren't good?
@@JohnGlasscock idk he was setting up scumps setup and hes just said not to buy a negear router
Hey i doubt youll see this (5 years later lol..) but when setting up QoS with R7000P i only have dynamic qos and not advance.. any help? I still get massive lag whenever ppl download stuff.
For QoS, what happens if I go less than OR more than 70% of the uplink bandwidth maximum?
Which qos router is the best one to buy to play FIFA online?
It’s not that deep bro 😂😂
That sounds like a ISP problem if your getting game specific.
I found your channel after your BEST GAMING MODEM video... I can't find the follow up.. can you tell me what modem and router you are currently having the best results with?
I have AT&T Fiber there is no modem on a fiber connection
@@JohnGlasscock what about router?

You are welcome
@john glasscock, I have a xr300, could you explain the qos slider a little more?? Say I put the slider at 70% am I limiting the bandwidth to other devices or to my Xbox which I want prioritized? Also do you have a more in depth video on port forwarding?
Can you limit speeds on certain devices e.g. if I wanted to limit a laptop to 10mbps download speed max
Yes
I cant use the qos service when i tick on it and touch apply nothing happens the settings cant even get saved for qos
Appreciate the content, would it be more advantageous to run your ps4 through a router or through the network switch? The nighthawk s8000 does give me some qos functionality.
Depends on your setup IMO
Hey John, this comment may not be seen but my question is finer internet that’s hooked up to a ARRIS SB8200 with a Netgear Nighthawk R7800 (soon to be upgraded to a XR500) or fiber internet with AT&T? Your thoughts?
For gaming? It depends I doubt you would notice a significant difference
Good stuff.. Always have issues with specifically setting up Router for Consoles Optimization.
Yo john
My router is huawei e586 I didn't find QoS setting is there any method to get a lower packet loss ??
and keep doing the insane work 😃❤️💪

I don't know anything about that particular router. Have you checked google and looked up a PDF user manual?

No, I'm not a fan of any auto configured QoS. Anything that allows you to control the total bandwidth and its allocation will be better
What about if you have a modem/router. How do you run it. Ap,router, bridge
Best DNS is you isp server, enter your default gateway ip addres in the primary dns , and leave the secondary 0 0 0 0.
How do you find your ISP server?
It's your Default gateway, it's basically the ip addres of your router witch have all the features from your isp, like dns, mtu, dmz ect.... this google dns gets your internet slower i tried it tho. And iam An IT graduates i know what about Networking.
K thanks
@@igame54 thanks will try when I get home
I don’t have an advanced QOS I just have Dynamic QOS. Will that do anything enabling dynamic?
Recomended AP or Bridge Mode gaming bro?
well what ports should i open for my ps4 ?
hey idk if you can help but when i go to QoS settings it doesn’t let me prioritize by device, it doesn’t let me change anything. any help?
Same!! :/
I def know I need this for all my online fighting games
My arris XB6 does bridge mode with a tap of a button but I cannot find if it is "Native Bridge Mode"
What is Native Bridge Mode and do you know off hand if the Arris XB6 has it ?
I've been googling it but can't find out.
Yeah you're pretty much spot on with everything. Sorry about that, yeah mine is the ac1900. In my opinion if your provider let's go change your modem I'd recommend a cm1000 and xr500 instead. A switch and AP is really only useful for more complex networks or people who cannot use their own modem
Hey I tried to use auto detect and config for ipv6 but my Xbox series x still is on ipv4. My isp does support ipv6 so I have no idea what’s wrong. Can someone help

Any tips for the GL-X3000 (Spitz AX)
I have Fios gigibit connection and a nighthawk AC2400 can I fix the router settings to get best ping
You would have to make sure your Nighthawk has a WAN IP
Some people just kick the random but I think it's a dick thing to do
John i got 300 down 300 up internet i use ethernet cable I am getting constant 80 ping and no possible way it goes lower no matter what i try its because of how far i live from the host and the routing my ISP does, any way i can lower my ping even in the slightest? anything will help, *please*
