Honda GCV160 Governor Adjustment and More

  • This Honda mower is just like mine. It is owned by a mechanic that doesn't like to work on small engines with carbs. In this video I adjust the governor and show a few more things. I am thinking the max RPM should be between 3100 and 3200 Not 3600 as here in the video. You can comment if you like.

    THE CHOKE ACTUATION LEVER IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE LEVER ON THE CARB. !!!

      Could you please articulate. Both my Honda and this one are identical. Do you have something different? I would love to know. You can email me at bthversion1@gmail.com. I understand the lever coming out of the engine which is an internal piece is on the other side but the actual lever to adjust the governor is where is said it was. If I am wrong i would love to know.

    Thanks Bruce : I've used your training lessons to help me on the maintenance on my Honda 160 cc motors , I have my own personal Honda now and three ready to sell come green grass growing season now . I've worked on mowers thirty years ago - but never a Honda . Worked on a lot of clinton motors tho . Thanks again

    I just paid $15 for a MTD with a Chonda engine. It ran on carb spray but stalled after 10 seconds. I cleaned the carb and it ran but barely and it surged like crazy. I figured it out. It is missing the bottom govenor spring. Your video helped me to go from a surge mystery to a functional mower. Thanks Bruce. $15 dollars well spent.

    Hey Bruce enjoy your videos : obtained a Troy Bilt - Honda motor with a little vibration - above normal in my book - had taken the blade off and sharpened it . Vibration was still there , finally after getting the Miss out of the carburetor went back and took blade off . Too my dismay found it had a bad cracked blade holder ( used a bright trouble light and found it cracked in several places ) , ordered one yesterday from Amazon should be here in a couple of days . Should fix the problem , for I checked the crankshaft out runs true . Bought the mower from a church for resale - but now have plans to keep it seeing the shape it's in . Wanted to share this with the people , that sometimes you just have to use a brighter light to find deeper issues , LOL Cheers

    If you look at the Honda power curves, you`ll see the max torque is at 2500 for most or all these engines, and the max hp is at 3600. Contrary to popular belief, torque is where the real work is. So, one would keep is engine where it`s the strongest. After 3600, the power falls off a cliff because the engine doesn`t have the breathing to go faster. Honda puts the speed at around 2900 to 3100. Right between max torque and max hp. Good spot. One doesn`t run his car engine at 6000 rpm`s all day even though that is where the red line is.Then, you have the blade safety factor and the internal engine parts strength factor. Plus the extra engine wear.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. This one has been bugging me. I was on line last night thinking about this thanks. The book said 3600. You are right. This is a hard # to find.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the choke is on the machine and goes on the left side of the choke adjuster. When it is all together look into the choke hole move the choke lever to choke and you can see the choke go on. Hard to explain. Just make sure the silver bar is behind the coke activator in the air cleaner housing.

  • @LocoDirewolf
    @LocoDirewolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You shouldn't have to bend anything on a Honda lawnmower to set the RPM. Put the engine speed lever on slow and adjust the carburetor pilot screw for 2100 RPM. Then move the speed lever to high and check your RPMs, they should be 3100. If not, adjust the lower screw on the throttle lever. If you can't get up to 3100, move the spring to the bottom hole and repeat the process.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. But on older machines they sometimes don't enter the correct speed with just the spring. Thanks though always appreciated.

      I routinely use an American-made version called Vibra-Tac. It looks like an aluminum pen with a wire that slides in and out. I've checked it against the laser type Bruce used and it's usually within 50-100 rpms which close enough for me because it's much quicker and less risky to use than the laser style. Induction type tachs are handy, accurate, and low-risk, but rather pricey.

    After replacing the carb (twice) on my GV 160 I cursed Honda for not using dowels instead of bolts to mount the carb....it's very hard to line up all the holes with the bolts (gaskets, carb etc...)....the dowels are the perfect solution to this poorly engineered design.
    PS: While the Honda is more fuel efficient than my old B&S....the B&S was far less finicky when residual fuel was left in the system in my experience.

      Right. The RPM of a Honda is a hard thing to get an answer too. There are many different sources for this info. Thanks for the comment, appreciated.

    3600rpm is where the engines are power rated. Maximum safe blade speed should not exceed 3300rpm. Most companies put the engine around 2900-3000 rpm factory.

      Phil Builds Those were exactly my thoughts as I saw him setting it to near 3600 rpm.

      I usually set the RPM at around 3100 RPM. I think it depends on the brand as well, Tecumseh recommends 3050 max RPM in my Tecumseh tech handbook. Briggs is around the same. 3600 seemed a little high to me when I tried setting it to that.

      Yes, its around 3100 per Honda (see below.) I think it sounds a little slow at that rpm but that OHV engine is very quiet and sound can fool you. At 3100, mine cuts, good & doesn't bog in taller grass.

    I understand why you’re putting lithium grease or any grease on the wheels but doesn’t the grease get covered in dirt and potentially cause more damage? Just loudly thinking. 🤔😉

      Well That is true. I blow mine off after evey use. Not everybody does. but lithium is a good grease for plastic.

      I never grease my wheel axles. I clean them with fine sandpaper or fine steel wool to get them as smooth as possible and then I coat the axles and the inside of the wheel with graphite. It lubes great and does not hold dirt. You might give it a try and see if you like it.

      I mow between 40-45 lawns a week, for our short mowing season of 3.5 months and I have never greased a wheel, or do anything with them. I’m sure it’s good to do, but the wheels are the last thing that are going to give out on that mower. Lol

    Spark plugs can look good but still be bad.
