My neighbor has been running her lawnmower at that high RPM, when it first started I thought for sure it’s going to blow any minute, but this is the third season. I walked over after seeing this video and asked her if I could take a look and see if I can adjust it.I guess we’ll find out.❤
This worked for me but I also had to adjust the springs to the Governor which was the main culprit. Just put in a new carburetor and mower was revving way up and revving down. Problem solved. Thank you!
Cool thing about these motors is they’re nearly impossible to destroy and when they do go,..it’s usually due to some flaw inside the motor from factory…I’ve dug so many different push mowers out of junk piles and got them to run within a few hours tops…two of them were supposedly blown according to the guy who had them in his yard grown up in weeds taller then the building lol…city sent him notice and he thought he could just ignore it and got a bill for the city to mow it for $900! 😆 he was digging those things out after that..,they weren’t blown,,,both of them ran after being cleaned up and put back together again…greased everything up and started on the second pull…I’m tearing down a flat head two stroke on an old Toro push mower…really quite amazing how simple they really are…it wouldn’t cost but maybe $100 to totally rebuild a push mower..that would include replacing all the cables and levers as well as the gaskets ….im curious how the newer models are gonna hold up compared to these older fancier ones that tan forever ….rebuild it man…don’t junk the old quality stuff…
I have repaired many honda gcv160 same issue. Slips on that shaft somehow. Easy fix though if you dont blow the engine first. I have blown an engine not on purpose but purposely adjusted govenor to have greater engine speed to cut taller grass not knowing it was destined to blow up. And kaboom she went LoL. Had it happen on toro 7/25 rear engine rider, put a nice commercial 8hp briggs on it. And had cut grass taller than you stand but engine never had an issue i cut slowly withbog engine speed you dont want to force the mower just sit back and let it do its job. It was my go to mower for this
So I had to # auto choke system in order to find your video. It seems that when you type in GCV 160, it takes you to the other Honda frame that has the throttle lever in order to place in full throttle mode. So I am going through the same issue of high revving. I'm thinking that someone had gone in and bent the linkage so minor that you can't tell or feel any kind of bend. These two Hondas were waiting on replacement carbs.
did the same thing on a HRR216 gcv160 i resold last year. The person who I had got it from had messed with it and to get it to run and the carb needed replacement, also carb gaskets were in very bad shape. The person who I got it from had went all STHIL all electric for everything. I also got a KM90R I need to replace the carb on,
Your video helped me reset my idle, many thanks!!!! Question, I have a craftsman with the Honda 160. Is there anyway to adjust the self propelled speed, it's pretty slow. I attempted to raise the idle thinking that would help, that's how I got into the high idle jam:) It just has the normal two levers, one for the dead man switch, and one for engaging the blades.
Thank you sir, I'll check it out!!! I snagged this mower off a tree lawn last Fall. I think the people were moving and just didn't want to take it with them. Took it home and had it running in 15 minutes. Had it up on the operating room table today and cleaned the wheel adjustors and lubed the wheels, axels, and gears. Did a full service on it last Fall before storing, one of the best running engines in my fleet!!!@@TomDobyMowerRepair
I have the same mower, same problem. The shaft won’t adjust at all. It’s completely solid. But I may be using the wrong pliers I don’t have the kind you have in the video. Maybe it’s time to take a trip to the hardware store.
try loosening the nut... pull the arm off the shaft... push the shaft into the block and rotate it to the right and pull it back out. then reinstall, and rotate the shaft right while you're pushing the arm to the right and tighten the nut
@@TomDobyMowerRepair bro it worked! Thank you! Okay I’d tried fixing it a dozen times with my needle nose pliers and I couldn’t get that governor piece to budge it was just frozen in place. I removed the air filter housing thinking maybe one of the springs was stuck or disengaged but everything seemed okay. Today I stopped by Lowe’s and bought a pair of Channellock Linesman pliers (my first made in the USA tool I ever bought actually). They seemed to grab the governor piece much better and I rocked it back and forth like you did in the video. To be honest bro once I got it loose with the new pliers I turned it counter clockwise because all the videos I saw before yours said that’s the direction you want to make the adjustment because that’s what lowers the RPMs. It didn’t work. I turned the choke all the way on, started the mower and then slowly eased off the choke and the RPMs shot up again like all the other times. It was getting dark outside and I said I’ll try one more adjustment I’ll do it like the guy (you) in the last video I watched. So I adjusted it clockwise, started it up with the choke engaged and eased off the choke and the RPMs FINALLY sounded normal! We got it running. I don’t know how it worked because everyone was saying clockwise raises the RPMs? Just glad it did. And I got a new tool today so I’m happy haha. Thanks again bro! Appreciate your video. I’m subbed.
Great video. Just purchased a used HRR2164VXA and it's over revving a ton. When he was checking RPM's was that a non-contact tachometer he was using? If it was would anyone happen to know the brand, model or part number of it?
I can't find the damn spring in mine. I'm not sure what year it is. Its an older 5hp 22 inch Murray. Thats all i know about it. I was mowing and suddenly my rpms dropped. It has very little power and isn't able to cut anything. I also noticed a little oil leak that only drips while running.
I have same problem it's like the Christine of honda mower I tried that still dose same mayb I try tighten it again and make sure spring haven't came off
Great video. So it's my understanding as I have a Craftsman push mower that's about 12 years old they all come with Governors none of them have Jets where you have a high side low side that you would turn a screw you either adjust the spring are you adjust the arm of the governor.. I'm trying to help a widow across the street her lawn mower is running very slow.
@@TomDobyMowerRepair it’s stuck wide open, but it’s not gummed up it’s a brand new carb, all the linkages and everything are set how they are supposed to be but it’s still running wide open, kind of at a loss
This guys whistling put me at ease and told me that I CAN fix my mower
Thanks man, i saved myself some money by doing it myself and not paying someone to do it. You helped me

I did the shaft & linkage adjustments the same as you & now it idles to low.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
where the spring attaches to the gov arm... bend it to increase tension and the rpm's will rise
What does Scott Murphy have to do with this?
Haha!
The Guvna Needed an Attitude Adjustment!
Do you do that adjustment that way for every small mower
.
Basically yes
What if the governor arm is on the other side of the mower.
@@chriseverett1142 same principal

What should the rpm be at? I have a tach/hourmeter and mine is right at 3000 rpm.
That's good
@@TomDobyMowerRepair excellent. Thanks.
So what is typically damaged when they over rev? Asking for a friend 😂
I did this and my mower still runs wide open when started, any other advice?
Make sure the throttle shaft in the carburetor isn't gummed up and stuck wide open, that's common

yea take the arm back off, push it into the block and turn it to the right and pull it back out and try again

What is/was the target rpm?
3100

yes
