    I live off grid in Montana and have several GCV160 engines to keep running. I have one of the older style models as well. Your video is priceless. You have saved me from having to spend time driving and having someone else fix my responsibility. Thank you for teaching me how to go about fixing this much used engine. Best regards!

    I typically refrain from giving negative comments, this however is not so much about the video but a reply to the comments- some of them must be made by people who either have never seen a spanner or gasket, let alone know what functions they have. At least they are beginning on something slightly less critical than a car’s braking or steering system.
    If you don’t have the same number and shape/style of gaskets that you removed, then you need to reassess, what you have missing or extra.
    You may want to ask someone to assist you for the first few times of doing something similar! You wouldn’t go and cut someone’s hair without asking for advice, but you are trying to repair a petrol engine without even opening the bonnet of a car before.
    Their is no penalties for asking for assistance! We all learn something new every day.
    Regarding the video, I think it may be helpful to some viewers to actually lay them out in order on top of a contrasting colour background.
    Finally:-
    Take photographs of each step of your disassembly, to refer back to during your reassembly.

    Sweet man.. I took it apart months ago and never snapped pics and cant remember what went where.. 👍👍
    Edit:
    My Dad was so meticulous when it came to tearing things apart. Ex: his Trike Gold Wing was doing a timing chain replacement on it, which was a hard ass job. He had the Parts all laid out as they were taking apart like there was a mock up on the ground of the motor itself. Had screws back in there original part if they could've been. Had pics/notes next to the parts and numbered how the came off so easier to put back together, and just by his notes and pictures if needed (Polaroid days 80's) I actually put it back together as he watched to make sure it was right. That stuck with me to this day, but for some damn reason I didn't do it knowing I wasn't going to put it right back together the same day. So this video just saved me a lot of cursing and headaches and for that I thank you a ton.. Keep up the good vids..
    R.I.P pops..
    Mike..

    Great job of instructing. I had watched a similar video earlier to yours and he left out not only the order of gaskets but a couple of the gaskets that I knew went in order. What I learned was to take the mounting bracket for the kill switch off and assemble with carb and airbox as one unit and then mount it to motor. I was trying to do it the dummy way with bracket in place and trying to line all the peices up as I pushed the bolts through. You way is much easier and faster. Thanks for enlightening this dummy.

    Good job. One mention that helps me is realizing the importance of the "little hole" essential to line up. What you call the Megaphone facing the engine body is achieving the same thing: the little hole lines up, the gas flows where it's supposed to, you don't leak even if the sequence of the gaskets is correct. The "heat deflector" or the metal piece also has to be lined up correctly. Any one of the seven or eight or nine or ten variables can throw one piece out of line up and... yer done for. Thanks for the clear step-by-step.

    I have a GC 190 on a simpson Pressure washer. Only has a handful of hours on it. It runs in idle fine, under load it runs for less than a minute, hesitates and dies putting out a puff of black smoke. I thought carb, took it off,blew out the throttle body and main jet, put it back and no change. ordered after market cab and gasket set w air filter spark plug .... installed it with gaskets wrong. You show that well. I'll reassemble with proper gasket order and try again. If no change will try the governor shaft adj...thanks for the concise walk thru!

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! If you have an auto-choke edition of this engine, it sounds like you have failure of the wax pellet as the default failure mode is full-on choke for a hot engine. If not, I believe you are on the right track with the replacement carburetor Larry.

      Mine was doing exactly the same thing. My gas is for scrap when I took them off, but I’m examining the carb. I noticed it wasn’t a jet. It was actually the passage for the jet was totally clogged since the gaskets were shot. I went ahead and ordered all new gaskets, and a new carburetor.

    Nice 👍 do I need the air damn/deflector? I’m trying to diagnose what’s wrong w/ me engine & saw that the big paper deflector is torn from the “center hole” to the little circle hole. I ordered a cheap repair kit online.. but it arrived w/o that one darn dam/deflectors lol also very strange.. when I got this pressure washer which is GCV160 LAO.. I knew it was new but not starting & I took apart cleaned it out it back together.. then watching ur video I realized I had the plastic insulator which was stuck on then the air damn, then 1 rubber-ish coated metal gasket between the carb & air filter. But that was it.. no other gaskets? I got the engine to start now & it ran for a couple hours, then locked up the pull string & the next day started but the moment I put it under load it stalled. My landscaper told me I prob have to adjust the governor or carb? Iduno he was in a rush lol either way thanks for the detailed breakdown & if u read this whatcha think?

    I'm lost from the beginning -- tethered gas cap (I put cc on and that's what the robot heard as well)? Show please. You then show a shroud (recoil + petrol tank) and a large gasket/air deflector that supersedes the previous metal style that requires two more gaskets, hence Honda's kaizen (constant improvement). I'm struggling with a GCV 135 which someone has buggered about with -- when I was dismantling the carb, a rubber/metal gasket was stuck -- in a SLIPPED down position -- onto the carb, preventing the choke (paddle?) from fully opening. I suppose this is the result of Honda's far from brilliant idea to use bolts instead of studs. When I come to the big paper gasket/air flap, THERE IS NO AIR HOLE! So is this something someone has mindlessly put on... Should I put a hole, to match up with the hole in the engine... Well, I came across those metal things in other videos so thought that's been lost off my machine so bought one of those. I don't suppose it matters one way or the other, it's just a cost thing. So am about to make gaskets from the kosher material -- not as pretty as your in-house work, but the gasket sets I've seen online are criticised for being too thin. (Thinks...it's dawning on me why there are different numbers in the sets.. But 3 of 5 or 6!!)
    Anyway thanks a lot, big help! You've confirmed it's a ball-ache! (have made studs to use on dis/assembly until time to put bolts back in...anyone know if Honda is right and there is a plus side to bolts? I'm reluctant to replace them completely until I'm sure. Thanks.)

    Is it me or are the gaskets at the control bracket reversed? Isn't the yellowish gasket meant to fit between the control bracket and carb, and the black gasket goes between the air box and the control bracket?
    While those two gaskets appear the same sizes they list them as different part numbers. The air cleaner gasket is 17228-ZM0-000 (black), and the carb gasket is 16228-ZL8-000 (yellow). Curious what the difference is.
    I have a 2007 Troy Bilt with Honda GCV160A STA1 and recently removed the carb to clean a stuck choke plate. Over time the mower was getting harder to start, when removing the air filter I noticed the choke plate was open and would stay in the position I moved it to with the tip of a screw driver. Seems the spring that closes the choke plate was filthy and clogged up with grass. Few sprays of Berrymans cleaner got it working like new. But I noticed the gaskets were in poor condition. Found someone on Ebay selling a set of 5 gaskets, seems he makes them out of Felpro gasket material, looks laser cut the same sizes as Honda gaskets. Paid $1.99 shipped. Listing is for 1 insulator gasket, 2 air guide gaskets and 2 carb gaskets.
    Waiting for the gaskets to be delivered. I can't remember what the air cleaner gasket is made of, it was actually still stuck to the air cleaner so I never touched it except for a light wipe with a towel before reassembly. I'm hoping the gaskets are interchangeable, or the one on there is still good. Rather not buy a replacement for $5. I also noticed it seems Honda has the replacement air guides that come with the gaskets pre-installed, but Mines the metal one and I don't see a need to replace it since I can just clean it and install new gaskets.

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference is the air box gasket has a aluminum carrier to help with deformation of the gasket. The one on the engine side of the control bracket is just paper. We laser cut our own gaskets and consequently use the paper version on both sides of the control bracket. Good question.

      I have two motors bought about 3 months apart, one's carb made in Japan the other China. 1 has the emulsion tube style the other has not .. same applies to the predator/rato motors we have.. mostly the same,just ensure that the gasket does not block any of the ports , especial the one between carb and spacer..
      I made the mistake of using the newer style carbon fiber shield not realizing that it blocked that port. Had to cut a new one out of gasket material...

    • @laurenceprantner8618
      @laurenceprantner8618 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, I did exactly that; tried to assemble the unit ON the engine, dropped a gasket sideways, bolted it on, and tried to start it; gas was forced up into the air box, indicating that I got a plugged airway to the engine; took it all apart again, then, as Mr. Locker does here, assembled it all off the engine, part by miserable part, on the bolts, then attached the entire assembly at once. Works fine now.
