It’s one of my favorite games in the whole Mario franchise. Cozy, whimsical, creative in its use of old ideas and inventions of new ones, it’s my favorite iteration of the Mushroom Kingdom. My only real criticism is taking over an hour to introduce action commands. That’s one thing I think RPG and TTYD do better.
I'll be honest my gripes with the modern series are mainly how restricted the story and characters are. I honestly would not mind this series continuing to experiment with the gameplay if they dropped the restrictions and let the series pick back up with all the recurring characters, narrative traditions, strong references to each previous entry, and steadily-increasing stakes that were all dropped after SPM. After all SPM is very different gameplay-wise but I still consider it Paper Mario 3, whereas I feel like Paper Mario 4 has yet to happen because of how much of the series' DNA the next game threw out and subsequent entries only built on the little that was left after that.

Super Paper Mario: A DECENT GAME? That's a gigantic understatement. It's a spectacular game, because of the deep story, kid-friendly gameplay, and the variety of playable characters.
The person in charge of developing Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King is a man named Kensuke Tanabe. There is one interview where he literally said that "Paper Mario is all about the paper," and he really shoved that belief into those three games.
That depends really, each Paper Mario game has their flaws imo but here's my thoughts about the ones that I have played: Paper Mario: The level cap and battle system can be quite limited since your partner has no HP but the pacing, level design and the style of the music is pretty good! Bowser is the main villain though but it kinda works? No post game content though. TTYD: It has the best battle system but there's a lot of backtracking and the level design is a downgrade of PM64. It improves on many aspects though and TTYD offers more. The remake fixes the majority of the issues. Also, the setting is creative this time and the story, plot and villains too! SPM: It offers the best story but the gameplay can sometimes be not so great. Some chapters and areas can drag on for too long and there isn't much strategy. Some chapters can be good though but however like in TTYD, it has creativity! TOK: Probably has the best soundtrack out of all the games imo, the overworld design is great and the areas feel open. Some of the locations are original but the battle ring system sadly drags it down and it's missing the uniqueness of TTYD and SPM because you don't see any new species. Some moments can pull you right into the strings though similar to SPM. I like Bobby and Olivia, their interaction, personalities and bonding was pretty cool.
I think the first 2 Paper Mario games still holds up remarkably well and are still the best to this day. Not only were the story & characters more charming, but the gameplay was just as simple, yet compelling that's smooth & engaging and what an Paper Mario game should be. I don't mind some constant changes into the gameplay style in later games. But they didn't have the same aspects as the first 2 had like experience points, level ups, badges and other things that we've come to known. Not to mentioned they weren't all that good. I hope the new Paper Mario goes back to it's root since TTYD and bring back the magic of the franchise. With TTYD Remake doing so well, who knows.
Color Splash is such an underrated gem man, not the best thing ever, but I think it was a good improvement in some ways to Sticker Star and the gameplay/overworld were done very well for the most part
Paper Mario: This is my personal favorite of the series for many years; mainly because nostalgia but also because I'd say it has the best music and originally had my personal favorite boss fights. Especially the Master The Thousand Year Door: The definitive best in the series and never really disagreed, but it's not without some flaws. It's the only one of the first three games with a legit not so good chapter; especially the aforementioned back tracking. But ever since the Switch remake, I finally conceded to being my favorite. They fixed the back tracking that fixed the worst issues I had with Chapters 4 and 7; but Chapter 2 still is the worst chapter in the game. But another big change is the addition of Prince Mush as a Superboss; finally a boss that tops The Master from the OG Paper Mario. Super Paper Mario: Easily the best in terms of story, dialogue, and characterization. It plays more like a classic Super Mario Bros game than it does Paper Mario, but at least they kept the level up system. But sadly, the weakest part is that the combat is too easy. Mario can uses his 2D/3D flip to elude every dangerous obstacle, Peach can make herself basically invulnerable, Bowser can sweep every boss in the game with his Fire Breath, and Luigi can Super Jump over every boss in the game and position himself for an automatic Power Bounce sweep. Sticker Star: Only one I outright think it's bad, Chuggaconroy did a full analysis on this. It has good music and animation, but that's about it. There is nothing to gain from enemy encounters via no level up system, just using up stickers/ammunition. And even running basically KO's them and gives you most coins. Every boss in the game can either be OHKO'd or have a tough fight; and Kersti literally insults you for not taking the easy way out. Not the worst game ever made, far from it, but I definitely still think the gameplay has more bad than good. Color Splash: On paper, it looks like Sticker Star 2.0, but they made a lot of efforts to improve the formula. Cards are much more manageable than stickers, and paint is a neat HP mechanic. Bosses and story are far better designed, but it still lacks the charm of the first 2, or even the first three games that could have been resolved with a simple level up system and more partner variety. Origami King: Another attempted effort, they brought back partners even if lacking artistic designs but they give personality. One of the best attempts at improving the story and humor though not quite Super Paper Mario tier. Battle system interesting on paper and excellent for boss battles, but in some ways it might ironically be worse than the previous two for regular enemies. And once again, it lacks the level up system. Which was the number one thing I wanted back. Overall, the first three games are phenomenal in their own rights. Sticker Star bad, Color Splash is decent and somewhat underrated but wouldn't say great. Origami King is also decent, but still has set backs.
I can confirm my biases to the games of old isn't nostalgia talking. The new games are just filled with bone headed decisions. Origami King's useless battle system, Color Splash's unintuitive and very player vs. game type design and Sticker Star's EVERYTHING! That was a mess.
My biggest issue with the new paper mario games is the hyperfocus on paper, arts and crafts, etc. I want actual characters that aren’t built around the concept of paper.

@@g2a5b0e It’s a bit of a long answer. The Japanese version of Paper Mario was titled Mario Story, but Paper Mario was the title given to the US version. The first 3 games had paper aesthetics/motifs that occasionally influenced the gameplay but the writing and the world design did not completely revolve around the concept of paper. Characters didn’t crack paper jokes all the time. You fought against characters, not nameless shiny stickers or giant staplers or origami. It was more of a standard RPG with a storybook aesthetic than a bunch of gimmicks revolving around arts and crafts. Any influence that “paper” had on the world was subtextual, rather than being practically shoved in your face like in the later games.
Hey, we got a new Mario and Luigi game! Which I certainly wasn't expecting. It's not outside the realm of possibility that we'll get a new Paper Mario game before too long. Imagine how beautiful it would look on whatever console succeeds the Switch.
The original PM64 was such a great game with a lot of charm, though more simplistic. TTYD is masterful and really built on almost everything from the first and made most aspects even better. SPM is a bit of a departure, but an excellent story and fun game mechanics. ToK was incredibly refreshing, loved the various environments and the implementation of paper aesthetics. Just wish the battle system didn’t get as repetitive and they Nintendo allowed them to use unique characters again!
I'm completely convinced that the only reason Super Paper Mario is looked down on is because it completely unnecessarily has Paper in the name, messing with everyone's expectations.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but the first two games are easily better than the rest imo. It’s not nostalgia for me either bc I didn’t play the first two games until recently (Paper Mario on NSO and TTYD remake). For whatever reason the modern games don’t keep me engaged, I get to like the third world of these games, stop playing, and then never return. On the other hand, TTYD is a 40+ hour experience and I couldn’t put it down.
I wish the "bandwagon" would wake up and accept that SPM still has a lot more classic DNA than a lot of people acknowledge. The main thing that killed my enjoyment of this series was when restrictions were put on the story and characters, I'll defend SPM as a classic entry till my dying breath. I definitely think fans of the first two should give it more of a chance.

Honestly, Paper Mario, to me, has the same problem what modern FF have. Every Paper Mario game (including Sticker Star) has a good concept, but it needs to be polished, which is mostly come in a form of sequel, and what they do is, they keep changing game mechanics, and fling a new great but unpolished idea to their new games. (They got second chance, first one with TTYD and second one with Color Splash.) The difference is first three Paper Mario got a boon for unique characters and compelling stories that break out from traditional Mario mold. This is not a problem for me with the last three Paper Mario, I invested in experimental games anyway.
Your third paragraph is exactly the difference that explains why I can't see this series as one single series. That quirk of the first three games is the primary reason I'm a fan of the series in the first place, and it's just not the same with those restrictions in place. Not even a game with TTYD's gameplay would be. I just long for a fourth entry that has that unrestricted story and character aspect above all else.

But honestly, I cannot see the position of Paper Mario in the present. Mario & Luigi are overlapped with the first two Paper Mario, and they have more opportunities to play with. Even if the next one has a wild story and character aspect, I doubt they will revert entirely to TTYD form. I play Color Splash and found out Mario's deck-building game would be cool, and not overlapped with Mario & Luigi, but then they changed mechanics again in TOK. Aside from the restriction whatsoever, the whole franchise is completely messed with gameplay changing. I feel like this franchise is beyond the mess, imo.
In my opinion origami king is best. It has the best soundtrack and is the funniest. It has fun bosses and amazing companions (specifically Bobby and Olivia). The ring battle system really isn’t that bad. It gets a little repetitive but that doesn’t bring the game down that much. Battles are kinda pointless with no leveling up but I still think this is the best game in the series
I've always preferred the Mario and Luigi games over Paper Mario. They're a bit more in-depth and involved when it comes to the combat interaction. Paper Mario is still good, though. I haven't played either franchise past the original 2 or 3 games, so I don't know how accurate my statement/reasoning holds up with the new games.

After SPM my hopes could not have been higher for the series' future so I think what came after could not have been more opposite to what I was expecting.

64 started a format, TTYD perfected it, SPM changed it entirely and added the coolest story, Sticker Star was a disgrace, and the last two were a’ight.
It's definitely a more consistent series. Even paper jam is 100 times better than sticker star. And superstar saga and bowser's inside story are almost as good as TTYD

Ive played every game outside of sticker star which I’ve seen videos of and it looks not fun to play but in general the other ones are all pretty good I was definitely more of a fan of the original 3 but origami king and color splash were fine

Nintendo does wanted to work with Square, the original name was smrpg 2 even, and it was never called Paper Mario in japan. (It was called Mario Story, and ttyd is paper mario there.) They didn't worked with Square, because they made the new ff game to the playstation, and sony is the rival of nintendo, so they refused to work with them after that.
I like the Paper Mario series (especially TTYD) but I hate the battle system in all the games. The action commands ruin the combat for me. I don’t understand why Mario RPGs can’t just use Pokémon’s combat system where you just select an attack and then your character automatically attacks? Like, why do the Mario RPGs have to focus on timing? It’s just very unnecessary and makes battles not fun to do most of the time, especially when you’re bad at timing. If you’re bad at timing, then the games’ basically extremely difficult to beat, and that’s not good game design

For me SPM still has the best soundtrack (the motif usage + strong story and characters it was applied to is unmatched, and I unironically love the electronic synth soundfont for this series, the later soundtracks are a lot more traditional and while they're great I'll always love TTYD & SPM's vibes) The jury is still out for me on the visuals. TTYD Remake is definitely the one that warmed me up to the modern PM visuals though, I vastly prefer it over CS & TOK's. But I'll always have a soft spot for the 2D-oriented visuals of the first three games which pulled everything off with the texturing & vertex colors. I especially love how SPM's worlds look in 2D with the thick black outlines around 3D objects and the parallax scrolling 2D backgrounds, though there is a lot left to be desired when shifting to 3D. Also shoutout to the E3 2010 beta of Sticker Star, unironically think an HD version of that look would go hard and possibly be the definitive Paper Mario visual style (Always preferred when the series pushed the 2D aesthetic as far as it could go rather than going for a more meta and literal visualization of paper, but again the TTYD remake was a fantastic middle ground)
I say depends on console of the year or years. (Gamecube hell ya, Wii good but can’t remember much, Wii U my fav for sure). Mario Ben good. I know paint ones are eh but I love paint one. It was like early or better Mario maker at the time. Just hope new have amiibo support because wouldn’t be cool to have amiibo like for splash.
I like TTYD and Colour Splash. I like Colour Splash because It’s kinda like a “Modern Paper Mario” version of TTYD but with no interesting characters other than Huey, Peach, Bowser, the Koopalings and Mario.

I love the Paper Mario games more than the Mario and Luigi games, and TTYD (i much prefer the remake now, I can't go back to the original) is my favorite game of all time, PM64 is my second favorite game of all time, and Shadow Queen is my favorite Paper Mario character and favorite Mario villain! ^^

The Japanese version of Paper Mario was titled Mario Story, but Paper Mario was the title given to the US version. The first 3 games had paper aesthetics/motifs that occasionally influenced the gameplay but the writing and the world design did not completely revolve around the concept of paper. Characters didn’t crack paper jokes all the time. You fought against characters, not nameless shiny stickers or giant staplers or origami. It was more of a standard RPG with a storybook aesthetic than a bunch of gimmicks revolving around arts and crafts. Any influence that “paper” had on the world was subtextual, rather than being practically shoved in your face like in the later games.

Hey, we got a new Mario and Luigi game! Which I certainly wasn't expecting. It's not outside the realm of possibility that we'll get a new Paper Mario game before too long. Imagine how beautiful it would look on whatever console succeeds the Switch.
TTYD on switch is a full remake not a port or remaster…
I keep messing that up when i am reading the script. They fully remade the game i just get tripped up with the semantics of it. :D

I mean technically 64 has an upgrade system that you can only access as you get stronger so there is kind of a level-up along side Mario feature
Color splash so underrated
The original PM64 was such a great game with a lot of charm, though more simplistic. TTYD is masterful and really built on almost everything from the first and made most aspects even better. SPM is a bit of a departure, but an excellent story and fun game mechanics. ToK was incredibly refreshing, loved the various environments and the implementation of paper aesthetics. Just wish the battle system didn’t get as repetitive and they Nintendo allowed them to use unique characters again!
Story wise, super paper mario is the best be far. I loved the villains also. Dimentio and Mr L are S Tier.
I'm completely convinced that the only reason Super Paper Mario is looked down on is because it completely unnecessarily has Paper in the name, messing with everyone's expectations.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but the first two games are easily better than the rest imo. It’s not nostalgia for me either bc I didn’t play the first two games until recently (Paper Mario on NSO and TTYD remake). For whatever reason the modern games don’t keep me engaged, I get to like the third world of these games, stop playing, and then never return. On the other hand, TTYD is a 40+ hour experience and I couldn’t put it down.
Agreed. I think Super Paper Mario is still pretty solid too, but the drop off is pretty steep after that.

TTYD was fun, but I was never craving to go back and play more.
I wish the "bandwagon" would wake up and accept that SPM still has a lot more classic DNA than a lot of people acknowledge. The main thing that killed my enjoyment of this series was when restrictions were put on the story and characters, I'll defend SPM as a classic entry till my dying breath. I definitely think fans of the first two should give it more of a chance.

Honestly, Paper Mario, to me, has the same problem what modern FF have.
Every Paper Mario game (including Sticker Star) has a good concept, but it needs to be polished, which is mostly come in a form of sequel, and what they do is, they keep changing game mechanics, and fling a new great but unpolished idea to their new games. (They got second chance, first one with TTYD and second one with Color Splash.)
The difference is first three Paper Mario got a boon for unique characters and compelling stories that break out from traditional Mario mold.
This is not a problem for me with the last three Paper Mario, I invested in experimental games anyway.
Your third paragraph is exactly the difference that explains why I can't see this series as one single series. That quirk of the first three games is the primary reason I'm a fan of the series in the first place, and it's just not the same with those restrictions in place. Not even a game with TTYD's gameplay would be. I just long for a fourth entry that has that unrestricted story and character aspect above all else.

But honestly, I cannot see the position of Paper Mario in the present. Mario & Luigi are overlapped with the first two Paper Mario, and they have more opportunities to play with. Even if the next one has a wild story and character aspect, I doubt they will revert entirely to TTYD form. I play Color Splash and found out Mario's deck-building game would be cool, and not overlapped with Mario & Luigi, but then they changed mechanics again in TOK. Aside from the restriction whatsoever, the whole franchise is completely messed with gameplay changing. I feel like this franchise is beyond the mess, imo.
They should have remade the original N64 Paper Mario game first, THEN Thousand Year Door.
In my opinion origami king is best. It has the best soundtrack and is the funniest. It has fun bosses and amazing companions (specifically Bobby and Olivia). The ring battle system really isn’t that bad. It gets a little repetitive but that doesn’t bring the game down that much. Battles are kinda pointless with no leveling up but I still think this is the best game in the series
I've always preferred the Mario and Luigi games over Paper Mario. They're a bit more in-depth and involved when it comes to the combat interaction. Paper Mario is still good, though. I haven't played either franchise past the original 2 or 3 games, so I don't know how accurate my statement/reasoning holds up with the new games.

After SPM my hopes could not have been higher for the series' future so I think what came after could not have been more opposite to what I was expecting.

64 started a format, TTYD perfected it, SPM changed it entirely and added the coolest story, Sticker Star was a disgrace, and the last two were a’ight.
It is a great series but Mario a Luigi is just better but I LOVE Super Paper Mario it is so original.
It's definitely a more consistent series. Even paper jam is 100 times better than sticker star. And superstar saga and bowser's inside story are almost as good as TTYD

Ive played every game outside of sticker star which I’ve seen videos of and it looks not fun to play but in general the other ones are all pretty good I was definitely more of a fan of the original 3 but origami king and color splash were fine

Short answer: Yes if they do it right
Nintendo does wanted to work with Square, the original name was smrpg 2 even, and it was never called Paper Mario in japan. (It was called Mario Story, and ttyd is paper mario there.) They didn't worked with Square, because they made the new ff game to the playstation, and sony is the rival of nintendo, so they refused to work with them after that.
I like the Paper Mario series (especially TTYD) but I hate the battle system in all the games. The action commands ruin the combat for me. I don’t understand why Mario RPGs can’t just use Pokémon’s combat system where you just select an attack and then your character automatically attacks? Like, why do the Mario RPGs have to focus on timing? It’s just very unnecessary and makes battles not fun to do most of the time, especially when you’re bad at timing. If you’re bad at timing, then the games’ basically extremely difficult to beat, and that’s not good game design

I love the entire series but I’d argue sticker star had the best soundtrack, origami king the best visuals, and ttyd is the best overall game
For me SPM still has the best soundtrack (the motif usage + strong story and characters it was applied to is unmatched, and I unironically love the electronic synth soundfont for this series, the later soundtracks are a lot more traditional and while they're great I'll always love TTYD & SPM's vibes)
The jury is still out for me on the visuals. TTYD Remake is definitely the one that warmed me up to the modern PM visuals though, I vastly prefer it over CS & TOK's. But I'll always have a soft spot for the 2D-oriented visuals of the first three games which pulled everything off with the texturing & vertex colors. I especially love how SPM's worlds look in 2D with the thick black outlines around 3D objects and the parallax scrolling 2D backgrounds, though there is a lot left to be desired when shifting to 3D. Also shoutout to the E3 2010 beta of Sticker Star, unironically think an HD version of that look would go hard and possibly be the definitive Paper Mario visual style (Always preferred when the series pushed the 2D aesthetic as far as it could go rather than going for a more meta and literal visualization of paper, but again the TTYD remake was a fantastic middle ground)
Colorsplash is a lot of fun, in my opinion. It looks great and is very entertaining. Its just not a great paper mario game

I say depends on console of the year or years. (Gamecube hell ya, Wii good but can’t remember much, Wii U my fav for sure). Mario Ben good. I know paint ones are eh but I love paint one. It was like early or better Mario maker at the time. Just hope new have amiibo support because wouldn’t be cool to have amiibo like for splash.

I love the Paper Mario games more than the Mario and Luigi games, and TTYD (i much prefer the remake now, I can't go back to the original) is my favorite game of all time, PM64 is my second favorite game of all time, and Shadow Queen is my favorite Paper Mario character and favorite Mario villain! ^^
