I Finally Get What Paper Mario Fans have been Saying All This Time | The Thousand Year Door

  • Growing up I've played a majority of the games in the Paper Mario series, although I never really went in depth or finish any of them outside of the origami king. Online, I've seen fans praise the original games for being amazing RPG's and the newer games just can't hold a candle to the earlier games. Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami king received good reviews from critics, but fans not so much. Guess Nintendo is listening and remade The Thousand Year Door for the Nintendo Switch. Now that I've played everything the game had to offer, I finally understand why OG fans want this style to return to the series. Bring Back Unique Allies like Goombella, Bobbery and Vivian. New Locations in the series, and the intricate battle system. With Super Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door, and a new Mario & Luigi game releasing on Switch, Mario RPG fans are living the dream.

At least remaking this would bring them back to their roots and actually make a new and proper Paper Mario game. They were so laser focus on the donts they didnt look at the dos. Funny that Miyamoto saying "Dont use new species" meant for them "Only Toads". He probably didnt like the new species that were created in Super Paper Mario.

For me TTYD is not only the best battle system of Paper Mario, or of Mario RPG games; it's the best system for RPGs in general that I've played. Specially the badge system. It lets me play the way I want, using self-imposed challenges like "what if I can't use these badges, but do these instead?", then I have to adapt my strategies. Plus, the small countable numbers are so much better than other RPGs. I can truly optimize my plays and I love it! Perfect RPG = plenty of strategy + decent amount of action + sprinkle of luck.
Sure I may be biased, as someone who 100% N64 Paper Mario 4 times.

I'm glad to see this video exist. I hope to see this sentiment expand within the newer fanbase.
One of the best aspects of TTYD is the lives of the residents of Rogueport. As you go through the chapters you watch a broken family of Toads repair their relationship. Podley once had a relationship with Eve in Twilight Town. You can even talk to Lahla and learn her interests and dreams for the future.

The game had surprisingly interesting/realistic lines in there, too. Not sure if that was purged from the english version (especially the remake, given what I've heard), but, at least in the more accurate french translation (original, can't speak for the remake), Goombella had a line (Tattle?) at the Casino that went something like "It having female customers makes the place feel safer, in a way".

I think what has kind of stung all this time is this is really the only franchise they're treating this way. Yes Nintendo does change things up pretty drastically in some ways, but mainline 2D Mario is always going to be platforming to a flag, 3D Mario is always going to be a star collectathon, Zelda is always going to be a lone-hero action adventure game, etc. But Paper Mario just hasn't had a firm identity for a while. Is it a turn based RPG? Is it a sidescroller? Is it a collectathon? Does it involve platforming? Does Mario have a party of unique friends? You can't really tell from the sum of the series' games at this point. It was best when it had a strong identity, and I hope it goes back to that identity soon. It was pretty special.

They really sharpened the "many memorable moments"-style of the modern games by the time of Origami King(I mean, just look at all the ways Mario can just die brutally for instance, lmao. I admit I'm a little surprised you didn't delve much into the "stage play" style and especially the audience interaction of TTYD's battle system compared to the original 64's.
While you do get some points for Special Moves for doing well on action commands, interacting with the audience by doing stylish moves and appealing gives you more. It adds an extra layer to the combat that I've yet to see elsewhere, even more so when some bosses interact with them, too (like Hooktail eating them to heal once).

1:51 It's worth mentioning that Bowser being the main antagonist in Mario RPGs isn't necessarily a bad thing, the problem with Sticker Star is that it gave him no personality whatsoever. My memory is fuzzy (because the game isn't memorable) but I'm almost sure he has zero lines of dialogue in the whole thing. He's practically just a wall, an obstacle for you to get through to complete the game. For this to happen 3 years after Bowser's Inside Story (arguably his peak as a character) is just extra salt in the wound. He spends most of TTYD being a comic relief side character who has very little to do with the main story, and even _here_ he gets more focus and comes across as more threatening than he ever does in Sticker Star. Dunno about Color Splash because I never played that one, even as one of the 28 Wii U owners.

I think what happened to Nintendo with Paper Mario was that Thousand Year Door released in the Gamecube era.
And at the time, the anti-Nintendo propaganda in the industry & media was SUFFOCATING.
Gamecube got left in the dust saleswise & only appealed to the most core Nintendo fans like me (still got my Gamecube!).
Nintendo's attitude to seemingly everything released in that era was "It wasn't good enough to breakthrough so let's change".
Wiis & DS's success showed them that changing things up improved sales which is why Super Paper Mario started moving away from its core RPG roots. It was still good but it led to changes seen in Sitcker Star through The Origami King.
Nintendo put their best efforts into those Gamecube games & the audience at the time largely ignored them.
So Nintendo thought they did something wrong. It's the same thing that happened to Star Fox & F-Zero.
But there was never nothing wrong with those Gamecube games & the anti-Nintendo propaganda has faded now.
So Nintendo is finally rethinking their attitudes towards that Gamecube-era game design which seems to be beloved now.
That's why they put out that Paper Mario survey asking the fans for answers which they don't do often.
Good games caught up in bad times. And it made Nintendo second-guess how they did things...even to a fault.

The Mario RPG gimmick is that you can press buttons with good timing to do more and take less damage. It sounds minimal, but it matters a lot - non-Mario RPGs, when you get stuck, it's level up, get lucky, or find some strong/cheesy strat, but Mario makes you go "man if I had only hit a few more action commands" and run it back and try to play better.
I'm glad you get that TTYD is an excellent game. It's a beautiful thing to experience.

@Squiggy the other names were also inspired by things that happen Yoshi in the past, Icarus for the White Yoshi cause when I look at him he reminds me of Cupid and I know Yoshis can have angel wings and Icarus is a fighter in Greek mythology with wings before they burned up plus I love kid Icarus wished they port that game over or make a Sequel to it so, the Orange one is Rocket cause I picture him to be the fastest one specially with the dash pepper in Galaxy 2 and you do need to give the egg a pineapple in sunshine for it to turn Orange so Pineapple Rocket was where I got his name from and i imagine his eggs firing off like Missiles and i did think i could could think of a pun like calling him Mr. Ile as opposed to Miss Ile but doesnt really work as well cause he's just a baby, Pink is Honeydew cause when I see him all I can think is Watermelons but I couldn't name him that or Melon cause that's not really a name so I named him Honeydew just cause it's a juicy melon once again tieing into Yoshis barfing Juice in Sunshine and technically he's named after a Muppet so, the Blue one is Gusto just cause of the blimp fruit in Galaxy 2 and the blue baby yoshis in the older Mario bros games breathed bubbles so I went with an Airy name plus Gusto can refer to energetic personality and yeah the yoshi kid has that, Red is Scorch cause of Yoshi's final smash in Brawl he grows wings and breathes fire plus Scorch can change the color of something and considering Yoshis come in every color it just works and Green got to be honest was running out of ideas so figured I just call him Green in Japanese cause i couldnt think of anything else and apparently Midoriya can refer to Green Valleys and Yoshi's Valley is a track in Mario Kart so unintentional connection to Yoshi lore

2:15 I think they completely messed up the fighting sysetm. And I think there would have been an easy fix. Instead of a repetitive puzzle game, they could just have made it an actual strategic fighting game. The simplest change would be this: Just leave all attacks as they are. Make it possible to know how much damage each attack does. Don't have the one perfect solution. Just spread them randomly on the board. And especially don't reward the player with twice the damage output for lining up perfectly. The enemies being lined up perfectly should be reward enough.
And then it could be expanded from there by adding attacks or items which hiit a specific shapes on the board. For example one complete circle, or a boms on 3×3 grid. Also extra move items seems like a good idea.
The boss battles already were much better in my opinion. There wasn't the one perfect solution (or at least it wasn't that obvious).
It was more like coming up with the best route oneself. And maybe these routes were intended, but it wasn't that obvious. And there often were multiple routes.

I started with Super Paper Mario. It's one of the first game we ever gor on the Wii and I personally found the game amazing. I had never seen another Paper Mario game before, but playing through SPM made me watch playthroughs of the older two titles, which I really enjoyed. Then Sticker Star came out and not knowing anything beforehand I was emmidiatly excited for a new Paper Mario game and so my mom bought it for the family. While I enjoyed it at first, I couldn't help but feel like something is missing. I never finished Sticker Star, I gave up playing it in the Boo level, due to just getting bored of the game, instead replaying SPM for fun multiple times. Along came Color Splash and I gave the series another shot. It was awful. I painstackingly made it past the first world, giving up shortly after. It just felt exactly the same as Sticker Star, soulless and empty. This lead my brother ans I to finally download the original Paper Mario on the Virtual Console, and man was I relieved. Playing and watching my brother playing through it was just such a memorable experience. This game just felt right. I gave Origami King a shot, hoping Nintendo would improve on the newer formula and actually make a decent Paper Mario game again. It was alright, I did end up beating it, even though it still lacked in some ways, but at least having a new enemy to fight made this game as enjoyable as a newer formula PM game can be. But deep down, knowing what the community held of TTYD, knowing what the original looked like, I really wanted to play it, but it was out of reach. To say the reveal trailer about the remake hyped me up is an understatement. And now that I've almost beaten it I can confidently say that this game will forever have a special place in my heart. It's everything I ever wanted this series to be. I really do hope that whatever comes next for Mario RPGs expands upon this, not Sticker Star, Color Splash or Origami King. They struck gold when they made TTYD, and they did it 20 years ago. Brotherhood looks promising, I really do hope that a new Paper Mario will be just as promising. Even though not all games are as good as the original 3 and never as good as TTYD, on their own they still made a lot of people happy playing these games. I especially wish that newer players, who maybe just started with the TTYD remake or with Origami King get to ecperience this series at it's best again in an upcoming title.

Fun fact, TTYD is the true first Paper Mario game. The original was actually going to be Super Mario RPG 2 (there's even a scrapped title screen in the game's files), but Rare was bought out only halfway through development, so the game had to vastly change. That's also why the art style for it is so different, and is at times derivative of other Mario titles, it was essentially to save time and resources. The "Paper Mario" title was a western translation error even, and Nintendo only committed to that title because while it didn't sell that well in Japan, it was a massive hit with western audiences.
Even then, you could tell they wanted to make the TTYD feel like a sequel to the original, and just have a few cheeky nods to what was originally just a mistake - like the gimmicky gameplay was the last thing they leaned into to make the subseries feel unique to anything else Mario. Modern Paper Mario games however, are the opposite, their gimmick is immediately in your face, baked into the story, world, characters, etc. Just the titles and box art alone give off a different vibe.

A game that Paper Mario fans claims as the true successor of the first two Paper Mario games. I recommend that since that game shared the same “paper aesthetic,” great characters and interesting story
It’s hard to choose my favourite party member, but I do want Nintendo using these characters more. If Toadette, a character who first originated from Paper Mario, remained relevant and used throughout the various Mario spin-offs. I don’t see why the same can’t happen with Goombella, Koops, Flurrie etc
To my knowledge Nintendo made these games, therefore shouldn’t have any legal issues like Geno and Mallow
As for my Yoshi I got an orange one. I wasn’t really picky which color I got, it just happened. I named them “Oranjshi” which is a combination of both orange and Yoshi. And fun little pun to Japanese word for Orange “oranji”

@@Auraelement13 I heard about Bug Fables and definitely will look into it. Intelligent system made paper Mario so Nintendo could bring these characters back if they wanted, whether it’s a cameo in a future paper Mario game or a different game like the stars in PM64 showing up in Mario party 5. Also love your yoshi’s name, never can go wrong with a nice pun.

I think people are unfairly critical of Origami King because of what came before it (both from being part of the 'Sticker Star era' AND comparisons to the 'TTYD era' of games). Origami King doesn't try to be TTYD. If you take it as what it *is* rather than what you feel like it should be, it's a really solid game. Origami King has very quickly crept up as being my 2nd favourite game in the series under only TTYD! Having both of those on the Switch now is insane!
