In this interview, Norm kinda looked down on his podcast but little did he know how great it actually turned out. For me, NML is one of the best talk shows ever. He said he never earned money from it but I wish he did set up like a patreon at that time.

    • @veespa_
      @veespa_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Absolutely - I wish I could get in contact with him to head up a crowd-funded reboot of NML, but, I fear he is locked out of doing anything with Netflix - I wish they’d give him a second season already. However, I wonder if that is the case, or if he’s just kind of done doing talk shows...

@@veespa_ I haven't seen the Netflix show because I'm scared to watch it after seeing too many reviews lament as if it's just a gutted version of NML. Also, I'm still salty the Netflix deal made them remove almost every trace of NML from the internet. I would contribute in a heart beat if we could get new episodes that felt like the old ones. I still habitually watch the first season of NML.

@@tom201 Tom, watch the Michael Keaton, Chevy Chase, and David Spade Netflix episodes and you'll enjoy the NML style still present. The rest not so much.

He made money, it was ranked super high. Maybe he meant not much compared to regular talk show hosts. He had many sponsors on nml . I bet now some podcasts hosts get paid fairly well if they draw millions of viewers.

I appreciate how deferential and laid back Tom Green is. I’ve only ever seen podcasts of his featuring Norm, but recognise Tom’s awareness and humility in how he influences the direction and tempo of things very astutely and with no illusions about trying to have some edgy back and forth with Norm, we’re he seeks to draw praise for his ability to ‘go the distance’ with Norm for 15 rounds.
Tom’s understanding that he is best served removing Norms mouth guard between rounds, squirting water in his mouth and mopping up excess sweat and blood as required represents the greatest contribution he can make & you realise he’s ‘good people’.

Amy Ann - He’s brilliant. He would call into the Dennis Miller show in the 00’s, & he had this running schtick for a while where he was, “trying to do a ventriloquist act” where one of the dummies was a Holocaust denier... & the way he did that, among so many other things, had this straight-faced sense of sincerity & it’s absolutely genius. He’s my all-time favorite!

After watching all of these guest appearances with Norm on different programs here on TH-cam. I've noticed that he has created a style of stand up involving an interviewer. He plays off the interviewer in a way to craft the joke he wants to tell as he thinks of it. I'm sure he prepares things too of course, but his ability to respond so quickly with his wit to anything thrown at him is a true craft to witness.

Tom trying to ever so discretely set Norm up to ‘do his thing’ while Norm flirts with alienating him from many/most/all of his support base and commercial benefactors is a thing of beauty.
The best analogy that springs to mind would be combing the disciplines of:
    1. flute based ‘snake charming’. A practice synonymous with life on the subcontinent.
    2. The primarily Western-Hemispheric toward wrangling Gaia’s most cunning and potent reptiles with a view to milking in support of various commercial ends aka anti-venom.
Then combining these 2 seemingly disparate/counter-intuitive bedfellows with little to no notice because you need this & you got this & your one of Gods creatures.
Of course Norm is so acutely aware of the delicate balance Tom’s seeking to maintain so we kicks his bit off with this quintessentially Norm posture of ‘to what extent should I ease into things by shitting on Mark Cuban. (Who…. quick sidebar, by all accounts is A REAL JERK)
Of course no such discourse occurs in real terms, but both know Norm can snap Tom like a twig anytime he wants. What he’s cheekily seeking to determine is:
is Tom Green smart enough to ‘take a proverbial knee’ allowing Norm Smith to do his thing in or will he gain some insight into what Beatrix Kiddo experienced when she had the arrogance to counter Pai-Mei’s *Eagle style* with her own blonde, Caucasian chicks interpretation of Tiger style
(Ie. a sloppy, half rat powered mess).
Tom makes every possible indication he can suggesting, please don’t go down this road Norm, I appreciate I’m not worthy.
*meanwhile, Norm is just chill as fuck, (hood fully deployed) distinct gleam in his eye, whilst vibing on some old school, Gujurati, snake-charming anthem, whilst baiting Tom via osmosis.
‘Ya want me to bite ya? Should
    i bite ya?’
Tom: (also via osmosis) ‘Please NO, Norm!! I need this, I’m begging you!!
Cobra-Norm: *Head swaying from side to side*, rapidly tasting the air seemingly non-stop to identify any airborne markers Tom may have released indicating a hint of duplicity or contempt.
Despite being certain Tom hasn’t sold out and understands his place on the comedy totem pole, Norm proceeds to make it abundantly clear where the balance of power is by announcing:
    1. You’re coming up clean.
    2. You strike me as a great kid
    3. We grew up just a few streets from each other.
Norm: ‘Look I’m prepared to let you off the hook if you understand I’ve bitten dudes for much, much less

    Tom rarely disagrees (opening segment).
    Very rarely disagrees.
When Norm starts with "I'm angry as hell and I'll tell you why!!!"
    Tom's consistently like "Okay."
i.e. He'll not put up any resistance.
    -but meekly comply.
The two work as well together as any two I've ever seen - it's always an honor
to see Tom and Norm share the stage/screen - we always win.
