I’m into music, and came to realize Norm Macdonald was to comedy as John Frusciante is to rock guitar. Except Norm never failed/sabotaged on purpose out of spite (O.J. thing wasn’t really that) both never learned to drive a car. I've watched every Norm clip 100x over, and for my money him telling Dave about getting drunk is the best bit he's done. It's just one perfect zinger after another, all in the context of a ridiculous story. You'll never see this kind of genius on TV ever again.
Norm ACTUALLY loved being on Letterman. He doesn't care about being funny or promoting anything at all. It was just a conversation between two real friends.
That's a reflex, meaning the signal doesn't go from the knee all the way to the brain and then get a response from the brain back to the leg. Instead the signal goes from the knee to the lower part of the spinal cord and then straight back to the leg muscle. It's much faster (shorter distance) and doesn't require thought, and a neck injury doesn't stop it from functioning. edit: what I mean is, you can't use the knee reflex test to determine if you're paralyzed from the neck down because the reflex would still work even when paralyzed.
When Dave says "That sky rage" in passing, and the crowd gives him an applause break was a telling moment. Dave comments "No, I don't think so" as the applause starts because he knows full well that it wasn't much of a joke at all. Hacks just want laughs. The greats respect the craft. That moment sticks out every time I watch this.
All quite true, but I'm guessing that If the same quip gets the same response and he's only gabbing with Paul, he would take it gladly. The real crux of it is that he doesn't want to upstage the guest by collecting applause like that unless it was a great line. (Norm's plane joke a second earlier had just fallen a tad flat.) Respect for the guest. People in showbiz mentally keep score on things like that meticulously, and remember for all eternity if they've been slighted in the minutest way. I'm Kent Brockman and this has been my two cents.
So glad to see someone as talented as the legendary David Letterman recognizing what a talent Norm was. Dave stood up for him. Miss Norm's comedy. Thankful we can still watch clips of him

I was never a big viewer of Dave, but even as a youngster, it was so noticable how much he loved having Norm on the show. I can't recall Dave laughing as much and as hard as he did with anyone else like he did with Norm.

Norm was amazing, he downplayed his intelligence, downplayed his illness, and just entertained people with jokes that were genuinely golden.
That last clip at the end where Letterman tells Norm that’s he’s genuinely funny (1:05:20), looked like Norm was getting choked up a little. Shows how much Norm loved Dave.

He was so humble and was very funny with perfect comedic timing and did so with very little cursing. A unicorn who is already missed. Norm is making the angels laugh.

My family’s Christmas gift is going to be an evening of Norm Videos and the book to follow. Have to be selective which ones they see but that will be the best Christmas gift they ever receive!!
