Heavy Turbulence after takeoff from Shanghai Pudong International Airport! (1080HD)

  • This video was shot inside a Spring Airlines flight traveling from Shanghai to Hong Kong.
We have encountered some heavy turbulence after our takeoff from Shangai's Pudong International Airport. You can see it at the end of the video.
Does anyone know what type of maneuver is the pilot doing?
Far as I understand, they leveled up after takeoff, brought the plane down some feet and after that, (unfortunately I didn't record it - we like turbulence but we didn't see this one coming), we heard the pilots disconnecting auto pilot and putting the plane into a steep climb with the engines at full power.
    Airline: Spring Airlines
    Seat: 7A
    Plane reg.: B-8248

I'm a consultant and for the last 22 years, I've flown each week, pretty much all over the place. Funny thing, I still get nervous when we hit some medium chop (I'm not even talking the big stuff). Just something that comes with the job. A handful of years back, I had the amazing opportunity to take my Grandfather (God rest his soul) on a trip. An hour or so into the flight we hit some mild chop and the plane bounced a bit (really nothing much), but I still nonchalantly reach for my armrest and hold tight. My Grandfather asks me, "son, what the hell are you doing?". "Old habits" I told him. He said, "in the war, we flew busted planes full of holes while shrapnel from anti aircraft blasted us over and over. We are on a multi-million dollar plane that has backups for backups - and nobody is shooting at us. We are going to be just fine".

Luna Harselli, yep, not my proudest trait. A few months back, one of my consultants had a bad day with a client, and she was pretty upset. She was on the same flight with me back to Dallas and we were on a regional jet flying through some pretty big clouds, although not the worst weather - but of course enough for me to engage the armchair death grip. I was trying so hard to keep my focus on her story and to listen well, but I kind of fell short. Had to apologize and explain my little secret. Rather embarrassing.

a couple weeks ago I was flying above the Alps and we went through some pretty rough turbulence. As it started the flight attendants ran to their seats, even they got a bit scared. It lasted for quite a long time too (25+ minutes). I have never, ever in my life had such a terrible experience on a plane (and I have been flying regularly since I was a kid). This was not the usual turbulence... Someone in the front row got a panic attack but he was further away from me, I haven't seen him, but cannot imagine how terrifing it was for him. I have never had a panic attack and I knew I would not have one, but I was really dizzy and almost threw up.

I had a flight experience I will never EVER forget. I was flying from Toronto to Germany on a stormy night (thunder, dark clouds, rain, you get it). It was Air Canada, the take off was smooth, and we reached the clouds and went IN the clouds. You can see the lightning, and then all of a sudden the entire plane just drops what felt like 50 ft ALL at once. My heart sank to my stomach, I held on tight to the seat, and the other passengers screaming did not make me feel any better lol. After that shock we had several drops too, but not as strong as that one. I remember an old lady fainted and a doctor had to stay with her for the entire flight, which was 7 hours. I actually thought this was my last day lmao, but we managed! Didn’t fly for 2 years after that! I’m not as scared now, but turbulence always seemed to disquiet me, even though I know that it won’t affect the plane.

The levelling off is completely normal after takeoff, the pilots would be following a standard instrument departure which has a specific route and altitude restrictions. For example this one may require you to level off at 6000 feet and await further climb clearance. It feel to you as a passenger that you’re descending briefly because your inner ear has ‘reset’ whilst climbing and thinks you’re level so when you actually level off you feel it as descent. Your inner ear does the same again after a small amount of time actually being in level flight. This is why aircraft instruments are incredibly important to a pilot, you cannot trust your inner ear (how things feel) whilst flying through clouds etc. Nothing odd about this takeoff at all and you experienced a little turbulence due to changes in air density as you passed through a cumulus cloud. Happy Flying!

Had a very unpleasant flight two months ago. Pretty short one, but bouncing for an hour and 40 minutes was not the greatest thing a person can have. Even tho my dad works around planes for 35 years and I know that turbulence does not cause an aircraft to fall out of the sky it was still frustrating. This is not heavy turbulence. This is light possibly the low end of moderate at 6.35. Turbulence is grouped into 4 categories. Light, Moderate, Heavy and Extreme. There are very few pilots who have experienced extreme. Extreme turbulence causes a loss of control of the aircraft and is only usually found in very large storm clouds which are avoided by all aircraft. Heavy turbulence is very very rarely experienced by even experienced pilots. It usually requires proactive control of the plane and will not be experienced by probably 95% of air passengers in their lifetime. The vast majority of that "bad" turbulence you hit during a flight that you tell your friends about will be moderate turbulence at most. Light, Moderate and even Heavy turbulence don't pose a risk to the aircraft structure.

I fly relatively frequently and have experienced turbulence on many different levels over the years… some nasty spots were over the pacific and South China Sea areas - dropping sensations just out of the blue… to just rough bumpy rides. The other day I was flying out of Sydney and I have to admit it even made me feel… like woah this feels sketchy … the plane was rocking back and forward and bumping with loud thumps… doesn’t help when people yelp as that insights fear in others… understandably that Is something that is a natural response from some. I thought maybe there were some cowboys flying the plane.. but there was laughter and looks of wide eyes around the cabin after the experience… even I turned to my neighbour and had a chuckle.. I like it when the captain announces why we experienced the turbulence… helps me process this uneasy feeling and prepares me better for future similar experiences.

This isn’t heavy...but it is decent. Turbulence is just not very pleasant. Just have to think of it as big potholes in a road. You’re gonna flop around, and it’s startles you, but you’re totally safe. It’s more possible you can be injured by a pothole driving a car, than crash or get injured in a plane. Just stay buckled up even when the fasten seatbelt sign is off. Relax, and try to just stay calm. It won’t last forever, and the pilots know what they’re doing. Trust them. 🙂

It is going through some storm cloud, with no space to avoid. Once flying from Hanoi to BKK, pilot kept seat belt on during very clear skies. Then suddenly increasing altitude rapidly, we were tossed around, but then rest of the flight was very smooth. One layer of air mass was very turbulent which we passed quickly by rapid ascent. Pilots really do the best to minimize turbulence experience for passengers.

I had a very rough experience with turbulence way back in 2002 or 2003. I was flying between Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden so almost an hour flight. Everything was going pretty smooth up until the landing in Gothenburg. I don't think it was a storm that day because when we landed it was pretty ok weather. But on the way to land it started to shake a lot and much turbulence was going on. I remember being very uneasy and the whole experience was very scary - at least for me, because I was about 13 or 14 years old by the time.
Anyway we made it down safely and alive lol but that experience was probably the most intense in my life up until then and I stopped flying for nearly 20 years! That was up until 2021 when I finally decided to meet that fear again!

before this video here I was watching an explanation from an American Airline pilot (posted by WSJ). He explained the 4 major turbulence causes and wake turbulence is one of them. Here, if you land too closely after another plane, you get into the air stream wake coming from the plane's wings in front of your plane. Like a wake of a big boat in water, they get bigger with distance, so the following plane can experience shaking. The pilot also said that they are easily avoidable by deviating +/- 50 feet.

    Well as a pilot-
There is no fancy maneuver that he performed, he got a clearance to climb to a certain altitude from atc, and then he climbed. Those clouds look like cumuliform clouds and turbulence can be expected underneath and inside of them. Otherwise nothing abnormal, and you have no idea whether the autopilot was on or off because your not in the cockpit.

Light to moderate turbulence. Severe turbulence is far worse. Interesting how the engines drop RPM through the cloud bank. Might have been coincidence but it seemed that there was some water ingestion or enough disturbance of airflow that was enough to momentarily cause loss of ignition.

Just being reading through some comments on your page and some passenger pilots I like to call them are not entirely correct
..The aircraft does not “drop” as passengers like to say., up on the flight deck my altimeter barley moves + / - 50 ft. Secondly, ATC will never send an aircraft straight into turbulence immediately after TO. Thirdly, depending on where you depart from there are speed restrictions that are observed and not necessarily slowing down for max turbulence penetration speed also if I deem the weather to be not suitable for flying, that aircraft will not leave the ground until it is safe to do so. Lastly, the FMC (Flight Management Computer) will go from Take Off to climb mode at about 1500 ft and will adjust the N1 (engine fan speed) as a percentage.

I took a flight to Dallas. I can't believe the pilot actually came on the PA system and said we are going to be landing in Dallas in about 30 minutes but we are going to have to go through some " chop" to get there. I don't want to hear that when I'm 30 thousand feet in the air. Chop? What exactly does that mean? I just had visions of the plane being quartered and falling into pieces onto the runway. Lol!

The most probably reason maybe that the crew is trying not to fly across thunderstorm clouds. Using onboard meteorological radar they can generate a flight path to do this. Are you sure that you heard the autopilot disconnecting chime or the autothrottle one?

    • @ISMY27

This looks like an A330. I don't think I've flown one, but apparently the wings don't flex as much as other large aircraft and therefore doesn't handle turbulence as well.

"Does anyone know what type of maneuver is the pilot doing?" Answer: Likely the pilot was slowing (or maintaining) the aircraft's airspeed appropriate for turbulence penetration, what we call "maneuvering speed" or "Va," and it is a speed based on aircraft weight. Max weight will have a higher Va speed, and as the aircraft becomes lighter (burning fuel) the Va speed will also be lower. Note that Va speed is different for every aircraft type. Flying through turbulence at higher speeds than the aircraft's Va can cause structural damage, and if severe enough, structural failure; not a good thing. Seeing the wings bounce up and down during turbulence (or "rough air" as the airlines like to say euphemistically) is actually a good thing . . . proper airspeed and bouncing wings (which kinda act like shock absorbers) keep people safe and the aircraft in one piece. Aircraft are thoroughly tested and stronger than many think!

I'd rate that turbulence as light to medium at best. In 50+ years of jet travel I've seen some horrific clear air turbulence and cloud related too. There's not much wing movement which is a good indicator of how rough the turbulence is, nor are the overhead lockers opening from the violence. Really rough turbulence usually ends in injured pax who didn't get their seatbelts on quick enough. I once watched a guy get bounced off the ceiling and he looked like he'd been 15 rounds with Mike Tyson.
