Flying Air Koryo is like flying a museum's airplane collection! Between 2012 and 2015, there was the Aeroexpress train between Vladivostok station and the airport. This was created for an APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit in 2012. The Aeroexpress did not bring enough demand, running at the constant loss, due to a high fare and heavily auto-mobilized population, as well as facing competition from different bus routes. So it was shut down and replaced with the commuter train you rode with reduced cost and frequency to match the demand. Aeroexpress still exists providing services between Moscow rail terminals and Moscow airports. As Aeroexpress couldn't meet financial obligations of a contract with Stadler in 2016, they couldn't get all the ESh2 Eurasia (Russian gauge version of a Stadler KISS) trainsets they wanted, just 11 after renegotiation instead of 24. Four of these Aeroexpress trainsets ended up in Georgia. As shown here, Pyongyang has a lot of transit! Before war in the 1950s, the city had trams but said tram system was destroyed during US air raids, so it built a new system from scratch. Before this system was built, trolleybus lines and a metro system were created. The trolleybus system first opened in 1962, with opening of a line from the Three Revolutions Exhibition at Ryonmot-dong to the Pyongyang railway station. Today, the system has 12 lines with a length of 56.6 km, serving Pyongyang and its suburbs. The Pyongyang Metro has two lines, the Chollima Line and the Hyŏksin Line, with the lines opening 1973 and 1978 respectively. This means the Pyongyang Metro opened one year before the Seoul Subway Line 1 did in 1974. The Pyongyang Metro is among the deepest metros in the world, with the track at over 110 meters (360 ft) deep underground. Due to the depth of the metro and the lack of outside segments, its stations can double as bomb shelters, with blast doors in place at hallways. Most of the 16 public stations were built in the 1970s, except for the two most grandiose stations, Puhŭng and Yŏnggwang, which were constructed in 1987. The Pyongyang Metro artwork is incredible too. Like Moscow and St. Petersburgh Metro stations, Pyongyang's stations have chandeliers too! At Yonggwang (Glory) station, its chandeliers represent the fireworks that celebrated the Koreans' victory, and the pillars are sculpted in the shape of victory torches. At Kwangbok (Liberation) station, there are murals showing scenes of the forest from which Kim Il-sung led guerrilla anti-Japanese attacks. The trams finally opened in 1991 as a solution for overcrowded trolleybuses, with three lines, and the Kumsusan shuttle that connects Samhung station with the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. The tram shuttle line opened in 1995 when the mausoleum opened, to replace the closed Kwangmyong station as the palace became a sacred site and as Kwangmyong was located below the mausoleum, it closed. A number of Tatra T4 trams and its trailer B4 were bought from Dresden, Magdeburg and Leipzig in 1997-1998, while the Kumsusan shuttle uses VBZ Be 4/4 Type Ib rolling stock from late 1940s that was retired from the Zurich network in 1994 on a gauge of 1,000 mm, different from the 1,435 mm gauge of the other lines. In 2008, the City Transportation Company of Prague sold 20 used T3s to Pyongyang. In August 2018, following the introduction of new trolleybuses and metro cars, new partially domestically-produced tram cars were introduced in Pyongyang for the first time in about twenty years. The bodies were manufactured by Pyongyang Bus Repair Factory and named Thongil-181, on the chassis of the Tatra KT8D5K. A ban on bikes was lifted in 1992, and now many people also bike alongside taking transit, and the government has built bike lanes and even introduced Ryomyong bikeshare.
What a video ! Flying on an Il62...that's quite an opportunity. I do remember a long while ago as a boomer seing the Aeroflot II62 in different airports among them Karachi . And the pics of the streets of Pyongyang are quite fascinating . Thank you for sharing such an exciting trip! Congrats from Paris .
Terrible planes ! I flew several times by Aeroflot's 62's from Moscow to Mexico City in the late 80's. Loud, short hauled, there had to be refueling stop overs in Shannon, Ireland and in Havana, Cuba. But it was a cheap way to fly at that time.
@LocoMarioPL I do agree ...At this time Aeroflot was cheaper but with low standart service...in an other hand what an experience! I was a frequent flyer on tne 80 and surely in better conditions on the majors western carriers as IB AF UTA LH BA BC AL etc etc I flew the Tristar DC10 B747 B707 DC8 B727 Dc9 F27 even the Short on OA Nice memory but I can't tell I flew the IL 62...or other soviet era carriers .
Fantastic, that antique IL-62 is a real beautiy - looks brand new! Even the hostesses that come with the plane are beauties! I noticed the vendor lady at the airport accepting the US dollar currency. Also, I saw people waving at you while you filmed.
I was also very pleasantly surprised by the condition of the aircraft's interior, it is simply excellent for its age. Tourists can only pay in US dollars, euros and yuan.
Wasn't shown here, but Vladivostok is known for having a "white elephant" bridge called the Russky Bridge. When it opened in 2012, it became the world's longest cable-stayed bridge, with a 1,104-meter (3,622-foot)-long central span. This was also created for the APEC summit, as it took place at the Far Eastern Federal University main campus on the island. This campus opened in 2013 after the summit, and houses 41,000 students. The bridge is considered a white elephant because back in 2007 when Putin wanted to host it in Vladivostok, he suggested at least 100 billion rubles would be required to prepare the city for the summit, which, at the time, was three times more than the provincial budget of Primorsky Krai as a whole. In 2012, the final cost was 1.1 billion dollars, for the built-in capacity of 50,000 cars per day, ten times the existing population of Russky Island at only 5,000 inhabitants, leading to severe under-usage. Vladivostok means 'Lord of the East' or 'Ruler of the East'. Chinese maps from the Yuan dynasty referred to Vladivostok as Yongmingcheng. In the Qing dynasty, the city was also known as 海參崴 or 'sea cucumber bay'. Shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Aigun between Qing China and the Russian Empire and affirmed by the Convention of Peking, the city was founded as a Russian military outpost in July 1860. In 1872, the main Russian naval base on the Pacific Ocean was transferred to the city, stimulating its growth. It is known as the Russian San Francisco, and it doesn't take long to see why with its hilly, coastal terrain! During World War I, Vladivostok was the chief Pacific entry port for military supplies and railway equipment sent to Russia from the United States. After the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917, Vladivostok was occupied in 1918 by foreign, mostly Japanese, troops, the last of whom were not withdrawn until 1922. Vladivostok's trams first began in 1912. In 1991, the total length achieved 18.4 km (11.4 mi), but all lines except one entirely on reserved track alongside roads, were abandoned by 2010. Its funicular opened in 1962, connecting the streets of Puskinskaya and Sukhanov with two cable cars that run up and down Orlinaya (Eagle) Hill. The funicular is 183 meters long, During the Soviet period, Vladivostok remained the home of the Pacific Fleet, which was greatly enlarged in the decades after World War II. By the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union "Issues of the Fifth Navy" dated August 11, 1951, a special regime was introduced in Vladivostok (it began to operate on January 1, 1952). The city was closed to foreigners. It was planned to remove from Vladivostok not only foreign consulates, but also the merchant and fish fleet and transfer all regional authorities to Voroshilov (now Ussuriysk). However, these plans were not implemented. During the years of the Khrushchev Thaw, Vladivostok received special attention from state authorities. In 1954, Nikita Khrushchev visited the city for the first time to finally decide whether to secure the status of a closed naval base for him. It was noted that at that time the urban infrastructure was in a deplorable state. In 1959, Khrushchev visited the city again. The result was a decision on the accelerated development of the city, which was formalized by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union on January 18, 1960. During the 1960s, a new tram line was built, trolleybuses were launched, the city became a huge construction site with residential neighborhoods being built on the outskirts, and new buildings for public and civil purposes were built in the center. In 1974, Gerald Ford paid an official visit to Vladivostok. In 1991, Boris Yeltsin signed decree No. 123 "On the opening of Vladivostok for visiting by foreign citizens", which entered into force on January 1, 1992, ending Vladivostok's status as a closed city. The industrial base of Vladivostok was much diversified during the Soviet period. In addition to large ship-repair yards, there are railway workshops and a plant for the manufacture of mining equipment. Light industry includes instrument and radio factories, timberworking enterprises (notably those producing furniture and veneer), a chinaware works, and manufacturers of pharmaceutical products. Food industries-principally the processing of fish and meat and flour milling-and the building industry (prefabricated building panels) are important
Thank you for reporting on your trip to Pyongyang. I often watch your films. This one is special because you showed a bit of the real Korea. People are the same all over the world, they are curious about each other, they want friendship and contacts with each other regardless of nationality, language or culture. Unfortunately, politicians of all stripes stubbornly prevent them from doing so, rebelling against each other, pitting one against the other, lying. They simply prevent all people in all countries from living normally. And yet we, ordinary people, are the same everywhere. We have the same feelings, desires, we are happy or sad in the same way. We feel pain or joy in the same way. I would also like to go to North Korea someday. I know that full sightseeing is limited, but that is good too. I will also tell you that I have a sentiment for Russian-made aircraft. I was in the air for the first time thanks to the Antonov 24W of Polish Airlines. Then there were Tupolev Tu 134A and Tu 154M. I was lucky enough to fly the IL 62M before our airline LOT replaced its entire fleet with Western aircraft. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to use the services of the Ilyushin IL 18. Too bad. Congratulations on an interesting channel.
Thank you for the kind words, dear friend from Poland. Capitalism is the main problem of the modern World. Capitalism was once a progressive system, but it has not been so in recent decades. The ideology of private property enriches the owners of capital, and for ordinary citizens of the world it brings exploitation, poverty, and wars.
During the period of Japanese rule, two airports were built in Pyongyang. Pyongyang Air Base was built by the Empire of Japan in the 1940s and remained in use until the 1950s. A second airport, Mirim Airport, was also built by the forces of the empire of Japan in the 1940s, east of the Taedong River. However, after World War II there was a need for a newer airport, and Sunan Airfield was built. Mirim Airport survived as a military airfield, and Pyongyang Air Base was re-developed for government use and for housing. During the Korean War, the airport was occupied by United Nations forces for seven weeks in late 1950, when the forces flew large amounts of supplies to Sunan. In May 1953, the airport was inundated when the US Air Force bombed Toksan Dam, which held the Potong River's water 20 miles north of Pyongyang. During the 1989 13th World Festival of Youth and Students held in Pyongyang, a temporary terminal building was built specifically to accommodate the arrival of the festival’s international attendees, 22,000 people from 177 countries. By early 2012, the airport's old terminal was demolished as it was deemed too small and outdated, and so two new terminals were built. The domestic Terminal 1 in 2016 and international Terminal 2 in 2015. In September 2017, the DPRK fired a Hwasong-12 missile from the airport. The missile travelled 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) and reached a maximum height of 770 kilometers (480 mi). Kim Il Sung Square is the "kilometer zero" of the DPRK from where all national road distances are measured. It is similar in form and design to the Tiananmen Square in Beijing and is used for the same purposes, but it is architecturally more refined with its dramatic riverside setting. The biggest building of the square is the Great People's Study House which houses 30 million books and was built as the "center for the project of intellectualizing the whole of society and a sanctuary of learning for the entire people." The Juche Tower across the river from the square rivals the Washington Monument in Washington, DC. The Juche Tower measures 558 feet/170 m while the Washington Monument measures 555 feet/169 m. It opened in 1982 to commemorate Kim Il-sung's 70th birthday. It contains 25,550 blocks, one block for each day of Kim Il-sung's life up until that point. Almost all cities in the DPRK have one primary central square, often the site of a monument, a revolutionary museum, a children's traffic park (where kids learn to drive in mini cars), or other significant buildings that either political or cultural. DPRK urban-planning also includes limited urban sprawl, as new developments in DPRK cities tend to take the place of older areas of the city, rather than building new developments further out. In Pyongyang, this is the case with the developments of Mirae (Future) Scientists Street in 2015, Changjon Street in 2012, Songhwa Street in 2022, Hwasong Street in 2024, and Ryomyong (Dawn) Street in 2023. Micro-districts are made up of residences alongside their supporting amenities like public spaces, offices, shops, and schools. A key aspect is both the equality of the residential buildings and the encouragement of people to spend more time in the community, hence the focus on parks and playgrounds As shown here by the people rehearsing, the DPRK is famous for its mass dances during holidays. Mass dances are held on national holidays such as Victory Day, Liberation Day, and National Day. The birthdays of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are considered holidays as well. Not to be mistaken with the much larger mass games (held at the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium), the mass dances happen in towns and cities across the country. In Pyongyang, mass dances are often held at the Party Foundation monument, Arch of Triumph, outside the Pyongyang Gymnasium/Indoor stadium, and in Kim Il Sung Square. The river that goes through Pyongyang is the Taedong. The river is 439 km or 272.7 mi in length, and is generally deep. It is the fifth-longest river on the Korean peninsula. In 1986, the DPRK government completed the 8-km-long West Sea Barrage, with three locks and 36 sluices, at the mouth of the Taedong near Namp'o. The dam acts to control floodwater, preventing seawater intrusion into the fresh water, thus solving the water supply problem, and to irrigate lands newly reclaimed from the Korea Gulf. It allows the passage of ships up to 50,000 tons. The General Sherman incident took place on the Taedong in 1866. Just like it did with Japan when it closed its country, the US also tried doing the same with the then Joseon dynasty in Korea. In what became known as the General Sherman incident, the General Sherman entered the Taedong with goods purchased from Tientsin in 1866. They stopped at Keupsa Gate where the crew met Koreans. The Koreans refused all trade offers, but told the crew to wait at the gate while higher government officials were contacted. The captain didn't listen, and continued heading up river towards Pyongyang. The ship proceeded to attack anyone who tried to stop it. This was when it was decided to attack the ship. It was finally destroyed after being fought over for several days.

I love watching your travels with special experiences of different destinations. This is the first time I have seen people doing their daily routines in such a realistic way from Pyonyang daily life, from a tourist camera. They are really eating, drinking, shopping, going home, waiting for their friends. Pyonyang life has changed a lot compared to the old videos. Instead of people who used to turn their heads away when they saw a camera while waiting for the bus after work, or who quickly walked away without looking when they saw a stranger, I saw people who were laughing while chatting, and who had a daily smile on their faces instead of an artificial smile. Unlike documentary videos where these people are shown as robotic people, they are really people.
Exactely and the street are clean and well maintained...the environment is safe...much better than what you see travelling from CDG Airport to Paris !!
Interessantes Video. Many years ago I travelled from Shannon to Moscow on the IL62. This beautiful video brought back happy memories. Amazed at the quality of the two airports. Also, not an obese person in sight. Well done and thank you.
Probably because the UN estimates that 45.5% of the population of North Korea was undernourished between 2020 and 2022. Nearly one in five children under the age of five in North Korea are stunted, which is a sign of chronic malnutrition. Interesting video, though.

Very interesting video thank you. Reminded me being a passenger of the IL62 in 1970 with CSA (Czech airline) on asian routes. With no overhead luggage compartments like a bus or train, you don't want any turbulence...!
I have to do this too, even though I live in Vladivostok I am Russian and I can get a visa to Joseon, but $1,378 is a lot. The ferry to Donghae is 4 times cheaper (and I can already look for a place to stay and food in Hankооk, which they won't let you do in the NK)
This footage of daily life in Pynongyang is really interesting to compare with footage from just 10 years ago. I saw a few modern-looking buildings and sometimes a few modern foreign cars drove past, some electric scooters and electric bicycles with number plates on the front. I even saw a kid wearing a blue cap with the tiktok logo on it lol. You wouldn't be able to see that not too long ago.

The funicular is 183 meters long,
During the Soviet period, Vladivostok remained the home of the Pacific Fleet, which was greatly enlarged in the decades after World War II.

A key aspect is both the equality of the residential buildings and the encouragement of people to spend more time in the community, hence the focus on parks and playgrounds
As shown here by the people rehearsing, the DPRK is famous for its mass dances during holidays.

Feeling very privileged to get so many interesting glimpses of everyday life in Pyongyang. Thank you for this truly monumental vision of a very different normality of everyday life in such an isolated nation. Excellent work. Greetings from Melbourne, Australia.
