- Finding a GOOD kick drum does not always mean it's the RIGHT kick for your song and mix.
In this video, Zack is going to show you a two step process to help you find a kick drum that not only sounds good in the mix, but you will also be sure its providing the necessary low-end for your genre of electronic music.
This approach can work for any DAW, sampled kicks, synthesized kicks, etc.

You guys should create a video course with videos similar to this with more juice as an option to people who are not able to join the normal course because of timezone difference. I love the way Zack explains a simplifies things. I will be the first person to buy the course if you release it! I am suggesting this because I have applied for your academy course and found out I am not able to join because of the online live lesson times. I am in Spain so your course is starting at 1 am for me which is impossible to attend :)
part of the problem with the drum rack system you mentioned is certain kicks inherently aren't going to sound right due to the key of the song being different, that is if you are truly grabbing random kicks. I suppose if you had specified in the video grab a selection of tonal kicks that match your songs key, I would agree with you.
As always...I hope this can help!! Finding the RIGHT kick is more important than settling on a "good" kick!
♥️♥️♥️
thanks for the big tip brother !!!
Omg that drum rack tip is golden, such a time saver. Thanks for this
Hahaha no prob! Happy that one can help…been game changer for my own process too!! You can have racks like that for all diff drum elements too!! Take the concept and run with it!! 👊♥️
The way you‘re presenting is really fresh. Highly appreciated, thanks for that. To the point.
And thank youuuu for watching and dropping the message!! Means a lot ♥️👊
Bro - you‘re presentation of things is so good , clear and fun to watch . im making some music for 12 years, and still- have learned a lot from your videos! thank you ! 👌
I reallyyy appreciate it!! Means a lot 👊♥️ it’s funny because I get that same feeling watching others on here too. There’s so many incredible people making vids these days….we’re lucky!!
Thank you for this. So many videos on the tube that emphasize using the right kick, but no one really clarified a fast and easy method to do it.
Sub'd!
Appreciate you watching, subbing, and leaving the message!! means everything to us 👊❤
That’s such a clever approach. Love it!
Thanks! And happy it can help!! 👊♥️
Hey Zack, I appreciate this help. Currently learning how to do house drum patterns with Audio and MIDI. This tip has helped me more as I lowered the dB on my channels to avoid clipping. Knowledge is everything 🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥
Happy to help!! 👊♥️
Right on point. I've been using Kick 2 for a while and spending loads of time making my own kick and having these problems later in my mix due to doing drums first.
Yessss!! Same thing had happened to me. This approach has helped a lot…hope it can do the same for you! ♥️👊

Definitely and thanks for the content. Love this channel
Our pleasure! We really appreciate you watching and taking the time to drop us a message!
Thanks so much, I'm not sure why this channel isn't more well known. This helps a lot though, only thing is idk where to find good kick sample packs haha
Appreciate you!! 👊♥️
Very nice! I use a really similar technique, I place a midi pitch module ahead of the drum rack and just cycle thru all the different samples with the arrow key. I also set up one of the snare/clap and the open hats.
yesssss!! you can do this exact same concept with all the other drum layers too!! works well!!
What I always do is kinda building my own kick: I look for different kicks that each have certain qualities I see fit in my mix. (For example: Fat low end, hard attack, wide transient, ...).
Then I layer and EQ them depending on what element of the kick I want.
This literally ALWAYS results in a bigger more interesting/alive kick.
Love it! Finding the “right” kick is always the game changer!!
Phase
very positive!with love from Crimea!
Thank you!! ♥️👊

How to find the right RICK
Cool!
♥️👊 thanks
Thanks, lemme try it out
This is really good!
Thanks!! 👊♥️
When you add the limiter to check the mastered level of the kick, are you doing this on the kick channel or on the master buss?
Thanks
Master! Good catch, I should’ve been more clear on that! ♥️👊
@@TheCosmicAcademy no worries. Thanks for the great content. Really love this short form stuff ( and the rest too) nice to get little nuggets of info every day.
Thank you
youre very welcome!!
I CANNOT HANDLE THE MOOSE CAMEO
hahaha his acting skills are improving...I expect an Emmy nomination very soon
Love it 👍
Thanks! Hope it can help! ♥️👊
4:42 is that limiter on the kick or on the master bus when matching the kick volume when compared to reference tracks? didnt hear you tell that
May I ask where those kicks at 0:51 are from?
I call those two different types of kicks, Boomers and Knockers. and this video gave me some great tips on separating and using them. Edit: I think I'm going to add a third category that represents the in-between sounds as "bonkers"
