@@ProfessorSaibertin maybe explaining what type of saturation you used got missed lol. thats just as important as.rest of the vid... there are many ways to do it based on what you are aiming..
Hi streaky, your content is always professional and informative & this is no exception. Over the years I’ve learned that what ever you add there needs to be room for, things can quickly get too busy in the mix.
Most often, it is a mistake to not send the bass fundamental (100hz in this example) into the bass saturation. The distorted harmonics are generated from the loudest frequency, and if you remove that from the saturation, it will be less musical and clean. I would rather not cut it at 140hz, and just create a new bus track with a clean low end, then high-pass the saturated track.
Nice! I tested it today, and it worked fine for me. For some reason, my SSL Comp isn't modulating the VU, but it's still functioning properly. I was unsure about the incoming signal, so I added IK metering and noticed it’s slightly lower than yours. I’m using Ableton, so I can only guess how much send signal you set-I presume it was at 0. Anyway, the result was great! I managed to give the bass more definition and a bit of smoothness. I'm an Afro House producer leaning towards a more Latin tribal sound, so my basses are really low but have a smooth groove. Thanks, bro! I'll definitely follow you for more tips. Thanks a lot
nice. if you scoop saturn's output a bit it'll sit even nicer in a mix. a mid-Q band at around 1500-2500 Hz with -6 to -18 dB should do. adjust to taste.
Very nice one, i used to put saturn straight on my bass but using a bus is way safer to make sure u dont change anything about the orriginal but just add a layer, side note i actually prefered the version where i didnt hear the bass notes on my phone, it made everything sound more chompy and less smooth in my opinion
great video!!! last weeks i discovered this is very easy to do with that Waves Rack thingie, i use a tripple parallel channel config. So low, mid and high...on the middle channel (around 80hz to 300hz or whatever) i put Peakeater (free) and any EQ before it to boost the exact freq i want...then leave the low and top channels untouched...and on the master you put an extra peakeater, so you can see what the total dB does :P:P:P...then go all out with macros to make your own custom super easy coloring tool!!!
Brilliant, *Streaky* and didn't you demonstrate something similar with one of the Izotope Ozone modules on another video, and if so, which Ozone module was it?
Noting to keep an ear out for loudness bias, as the parallel channel is also adding slightly more volume. Ideally the main bass channel would come down a touch to compensate. Thanks Streaky, just rewatched this now, and have applied it to our latest final mix.
This video is worth its "weight in gold"; such a simple but so effective. What a difference it makes to the bass clarity in a heavy mix. Thank you Streaky for all your great work and videos. Your Colourbox plugin that I am also using is phenomenal!!
its different for compression this track use a short stabby bass but some songs require a longer bass which where i like to compress whit fast attack and slow release
Thanks for spreading knowledge. In this case you would likely need to be cognizant of other mid rangy stuff like guitars, possibly pianos, cellos, that would need to be either ducked away, or carved out with eq, correct ? Once again, thanks for the top Notch consistent content.
would be interesting to see what settings youre using, especially as the selected is the muted one. Like how much drive there is, or better yet which tape type you use here?
that was a super clever demonstration of the creation of harmonics by saturation. never seen that before. also, i have noticed before that saturating the low end itself seems to thin it out. anyone know why that is? is it because sine waves make the most powerful sub frequencies, and a saturator will change the characteristics of the waveform further away from the purest tone?
Compression is something I understand in theory, but it´s so hard for me to learn to hear it when the compressor is working subtle. When I crank it up, of course I hear it, but yeah, that's too much then.
Practice. Roll the threshold so you can hear what’s happening, then dial it back once you get your settings to the proper gain reduction, just output gain to compensate.
So basically the bass needs to be extended to the higher spectrums as well, and then it will be able to hear in wider variety of speakers not only on those who can produce the low frequencies am I right?
That’s a cool trick! Just wondering how much of that is simply volume and could be done also by using an eq and gently boosting that low mid area. Essentially isn’t that basically just making the 140hz above portion louder? Sure the saturation adds something (more frequency content, yes) but when using it like that, isn’t it missing all the good bits from the lower part as that part does not get saturated?
Depending on how much you saturate, you can definitely get much more density and color that you can never achieve with just an eq boost. And than you can independently adjust how much of the clean low end and how much of he highs you want.
hey Streaky, I have a pair of PMC MB2 XBD's, can you suggest near fields that can keep up? thanks. passive is a plus, i'll be using my own amps and crossovers anyways, but idc, i can gut active ones.
Did the bass channel is muted and everythink go in the bus or did the bus duplicate what is on the bass channel so there is the bass channel playing plus the bus channel ? If it the first case so why would we put effect on a bus and not in the bass channel ? If its the second case how do you work with double channel playing low frequencies it did not ruin the mix and just double ur bass frequencies too much ? I need extra explanation plz
I can't understand how the value at "0" with the basic settings on the Saturn2 could give saturation so much? Is this some kind of bug or am I missing something?
I had to rewind to make sure I heard you clearly because I got lost when you said compress at 4:1 ratio. The you said you’d bring the ratio up until you got 6db of reduction. I was lost because I was listening and not looking so I have to assume you meant threshold instead.

I thought this was simple, and helpful. Thank you for not making an hour long video for this. Nice work.
So happy to see a video that is right on spot, no one hour long talks - just straight to the point. Thank you! Very helpful

Waves Maxx Bass is great for that too.
I was getting ready to ask if it was the same or similar. Thanks.
Love MaxBass. Great plugin, Saturn 2 is awesome too.

Do you mean with eq after Saturn in the chain? And is this the muddy part of the saturation/bass?

In summary, give the bass some character in the higher frequencies and leave the low end in tact.
And crush the top of it with a comp
@@Streaky_com Also, add it in parallel instead of putting an effect in insert. Thanks.

Pro tip from Jaycen Joshua: send pass to a parallel channel, hi cut the bass, saturate the crap out of the bottom end, the low cut the harmonics.

around 66% drive...sorry for not reclicking on the top band...my bad
@@Streaky_com What about the Saturation type ?
Thank you
Thanks you! Top hint
This will be the video I send people when trying to explain saturation.
Why don't you use a video where they mix music?
It's not explained well. He doesn't say what kind of saturation. I don't understand what "putting a band in" means.
nice tip tahks

Why not saturate the low frequencies too?
Damn. Nice trick. So simple but I’ve never done it. Thanks.

what setting is on the saturn,,how much input drive
Yes, that’s what I would like to know. And what mode?
Looks like it’s just on warm tape default setting
@@paddyconn3344 Nope, that’s the low part and that’s turned off.
Yeah I was waiting for him to click on that high band that is actually being used. But it might probably be that default warm tape at about 30%

Can you instead duplicate the track and then do the processing on the copy ?

How great things you can do by twisting things
So basically the bass needs to be extended to the higher spectrums as well, and then it will be able to hear in wider variety of speakers not only on those who can produce the low frequencies am I right?
Absolutely. Don't forget the compression as well.
why don't you send pre fader so it doesn't mess up the compression threshold if you ajust the original bass track?
Fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

No! I've never wondered because they don't know either. They get their mixing and mastering engineer to do it.
Nifty trick.
Without any drive? And still saturating?
As always, an insightful tip… cheers
is this processing in stereo or mono?
Would you approach this the same way for bass guitar?
