I have a 2022 XC40 Recharge twin, and it's so fun to drive while also feeling very high quality and more practical than the MY
Bought my mother/boss one last year 3 days before the tax credit went away. It’s been great. We are in NC where the interstate speed is mostly 65 and it’s been great. It was the right mix of luxury/ease of use for her and enough ground clearance to get in and out of construction projects. More range is always great for for a car I can basically drive 2.5 hrs non stop in I’m happy.
I have an XC40 Recharge 2023 same one you tested, my frist EV car. Overall it's comfy, and practical with the frunk and trunk areas, It has a really nice interior (blows the Telsas out of the water in that regard) and is an absurd sleeper, this thing can hit a 12.88 second 1/4 mile at 107mph ! The range is good for the typical 42 mile round trip each day for me. charging every 3rd day or toping of nightly. The max highway miles I did in one shot starting from 100% charge in Texas (72 to 75 MPH cruise control most of the way) managed 166 miles with 15% battery left before I charged up. So there are better range cars out there but you can get by fairly well even with its low 223 miles of the stated range.
You make it sound like just using the regeneration at any time will always improve efficiency, but using regen to slow the car only improves efficiency if you needed to slow the car anyway. It doesn't help if you're just going to accelerate again right after
wrong. acceleration without regen vs. acceleration after regen, think about it.
@@EV3NTH888 You lose more during acceleration than you gain during regen. His comment was correct. There are always losses from rolling resistance, wind resistance, or even through heat during power transfer.
@@wade7959 right, but you lose even more without regen. if I pour in 3 ounces of water and drink 4, I have less. if I don't pour 3 ounces of water and drink 4 I have less than when I poured in 3 ounces. it's not that difficult.
Agreed JP, allowing a vehicle to coast to stops is more efficient than using regenerative braking.
As a EV driver for the last 7 years I can assure you regen can easily add 10% more range if city driving. Doesn’t do much if highway driving unless you are in rush hour traffic.
This video has a relaxing vibe which is a great change of pace.
The highway speeds and cold weather combo is a detriment to evs. Sadly most times I sit in traffic anyways. That being sad the miles per kwh is impressive for a blocky Volvo.
They stated that the maximum range is 230 miles. Several other TH-cam reviewers make the same mistake as dating the EPA rated range as the maximum range. The EPA rating is not necessarily the maximum range. That rating depends on how they tested the car, and if they used all of the EPA testing cycles. Some manufacturers, such as Ford with the mustang, Mach-E and Porsche Deliberately under rate their cars. The EPA range is not necessarily the maximum range, and all of it is dependent on speed and weather conditions. Other than that very much enjoyed the review!
We own a Mod3LR & a `22 Volvo XC40 Recharge. I personally like the Volvo better. EVs targeting the most efficient drag coefficient and such I feel miss a good portion of the point of why it is fun to drive a car. The Volvo is comfortable, roomy, fast, and a very lux drive feel. The interior cabin is quiet and the overall look is 95% indistinguishable from any other ICE car on the road. This for me, is a plus as driving a car shaped like a suppository is not a life goal. A few things about the XC40 Recharge. The Android auto SoC destination estimation is superb. I think I am safe in saying it is best in class for SoC destination estimates. It accurately estimates SoC when I am on long descends out of mountains. Also, I find I can get a real big range boost by cracking the moon roof using heated seat/steering, and off'ing the environments. The heated seats keep me warm when it is not too cold out. Thx for the vid. I enjoyed watching.
We gotta get Nathan in the RaptoR!!! I watched cause it’s Nathan and TFL not because it’s a electric vehicle.
The Volvo and polestar vehicles look amazing
I miss my XC40. I wish the Recharge wasn’t so darn expensive. Hopefully the EX30 will be more affordable.
Instead of a frunk, why don't any manufacturers just put a full sized spare under the hood and put all the EV stuff under it? One of the most common complaints I hear is most don't have a spare and instead use an emergency inflate kit.
Crash safety. 😉
@@davetravels9273 Come on, a flying tire propelled at neck level could never hurt anyone, could it?
spare tires cost money.
Here’s a winter test idea: Drive an EV across North Dakota on I-94 from border-to-border during January.
That would be a very short test!
ikr, CO is for sounds like Tansy ... as for "Weather". Yeah on OCCASION it has inclimate weather. ~ Though I did enjoy their driving range over the Rocky Hills(I was born in Alaska. Where the Mountains that surround ANC, are taller than CO's Tallest "14er" lol)I digress. BUT WATCH it, as they talk about the BAD WEATHER SEE THE COMPLETELY CLEAR ROADS!!! NO THICK SHEETS OF ICE that will not GO AWAY FOR MONTHS!!!!! NOT Tomorrow! LMFAO! ~ I always tell them, Go to the Dakota's, Minnesota, Montana, Alaska and NOT SE Ak and you'll SEE REAL SNOW and REAL COLD! LOL!
What would be the point? There's only a handful of people in ND that would consider buying an EV. The rest of us could care less about a ND border-to-border trip.
If my car showed 130 miles of range showing and I tried to drive 100 miles at 75mph I would expect to run out of gas and/or charge. Wind resistance is what kills range more than anything else regardless of "fuel".
Not to mention that in cold weather the air is denser, making even more of an impact on range than in warm or hot weather for the same conditions otherwise.
I just bought one of these used and it's a phenomenal car but yea, the range isn't spectacular. I might trade it for a 2024 model with the improved range and charging sometime in the future.
Test drove this and the Ford Mustang Mach E. Both fun to drive, but in the end the mach-e had the better range and was a little bit cheaper.
Have you never seen the AUTO button for climate controls? You don't need to learn how the whole thing works. Push AUTO, select your temperature. Done! I've used this in my BMW, and i have never even touched the temperature or selected anything other than defrost manually once in a while in the -50C temperature we've gotten on occasion in Canada. AUTO simply takes the guess work out of everything, and it really works well. The constant complaining about lack climate controls in cars is getting ridiculous guys. Try using AUTO once in a while. Its not the same Auto that didn't work back in the early 2000's. It works in both extremely cold climates, and hot climates just fine and you never need to think about changing any settings once you've set it to the temperature you like. Not to mention, it is the most efficient way to use these climate systems on these vehicles.
The Ultimate has the heat pump installed. So for the winter this comes in very handy,
just wait for the 2024 models....they're switching to a better battery pack and rwd motors....I believe they're starting with the Polestar 2 then the 40's....I think in rwd it's supposed to get about 300 mi....should make it a real contender in this segment.
I'm here after seeing the EX30 and you're right. Absolutely knocking it out of the park with the new model. (not sure if the 40 line is getting the same treatment since it's so close in size, but I doubt the numbers would look too different there. Just as beastly I'm sure.)
I was wondering why these weren't on my mind throughout my research, but the price and range reminded me why I wrote them off at the time. But Volvo has leapfrogged the competition and in a single day they jumped from completely off my radar to #1 contender on my shortlist.
I want to see the vehicle left outside instead of kept in the garage.
There are a fair number of cold-soaked EV range tests on the Out Of Spec Motoring and Out Of Spec Reviews channels.
Why does Nathan pull the DC cover off to charge with J-1772? Sorry to say that when I see him start the video I really didn't want to watch it.
You guys complaining that this car is expensive? In the UK we have to pay £62k for the Ultimate twin, that’s $80k!! Now THATS expensive…
11:36 What is all that stuff on the shelves in the background?
Some day there will be an EV useful to me but that day is not today. I seldom commute (1000 to 2000 miles per year), but I do drive 4-5 hours covering 340ish miles fairly frequently. I should probably visit my brothers more often but the close one is around 400 miles and takes 5-6 hours of travel time. The other one is an 11 hour trip to cover almost 700 miles. There isn't any of those trips where I'm willing to add another hour or more of hanging out waiting to charge.
Do you stop to pee or eat during these trips? Thats usually when I charge, and it doesn't add time to the trip since I would've stopped anyways.
@@MrJbmcgary To cover 300-350 miles in 4-5 hours? Or 650-700 miles in 10-11 hours? Don't stop for long.
Probably 3 out of 4 times on the short trip we stop at a public rest area about mid-way for 5 minutes to pee and walk around. If we didn't eat before starting out we might stop and grab a burger when leaving the interstate. Only for the 10+ hour trips do we take a break that might stretch as long as 30 minutes (the kids like to hit the In n Out in Reno) but there are a couple more of the 5-10 minute pee breaks.
This is a nice car but it’s too expensive for the size and range. I like the looks and the horsepower. 😁Hopefully they can start making it in the us to qualify for the tax credit. I know Volvo makes some phevs here that qualify.
This thing gets new motors and a RWD version this fall. Also new software.
Yup, both Volvo EVs and the Polestar 2 getting upgrades for 2024 model year.
Yeah, I hope that they update this test later in the year when the 2024 models with significant range boosts are available.
@@earthzero7 It's also getting a charging speed increase to 170kw IIRC
@@godofdun 200 actually I think.
@@Jet_Pilot525 aww dayum
anyone remember he started off w/ battery at 69%.usually for these tests it should be 90%. this 69% start skews the overall numbers. range should not be a fear factor with ev's. do you have range anxiety in an ICE? no. i have a 2023 c40 . it's amazing. fast. comfy. all volvo. meaning it's simple. it's not blingy like the ionic 5. it's a very Scandinavian interior. that means its so much better than a tesla but not built out like a mercedes with massive dashboard - long touch screens. and the infotainment system is not difficult to use. this made it look like it wasn't intuitive.
6:53 "If I just drive this EV the way it's supposed to be, I could get more range, but I'm not gonna do that!"
It’s seems to me like the EV makers are mostly going for selling the sizzle and not the steak. It would be better if there were more emphasis on smaller motors and bigger batteries. Many of the EVs are WAY OVERPOWERED (yes, I’m yelling)! The Chevy Bolt EUV is an example of a more reasonable balance, which I hate to say as I am most definitely not a GM fan.
you really want to test it you need to go to the store for 20 minutes in the cold stop and do all your errands then see how much you lose and i didn't even get the tax credit
Why aren’t you wearing a seatbelt?
Regarding infotainment and climate controls you can simply say "hey Google, set climate to 60 degrees"
I really wish the XC40 PHEV was sold in the US
What if I don’t have a garage?
interesting. Should EVs be kept in an environment the same temp as outside, such as outside or a car port / unheated garage?
No. The range estimates will soon update once you get going though. Maybe some manufacturers will start incorporating real-time weather into the guess-o-meter at some point and present the more pessimistic of the two vales in order to account for garaging. But probably not.
No, it will be far better to have it in a garage that is above freezing. Having a battery the size of a mattress takes a long time and lots of energy to warm up, if it's even just 2 degrees C it will be far better than trying to leave with that giant block at -20C from sitting outside overnight. You can precondition it if you have to charge/park it outside but it is ideal if it was already above freezing.
You can program it to warm up every morning while plugged in.
Not a problem, but as previously mentioned, more energy will be used to warm the cabin and battery. 30F outside isn't anything extreme, but single digits will result in an energy thirsty warm up period.
Scheduling charging to finish before setting off, such as a routine morning commute, will aid heavily in keeping the battery warm, thus demanding less energy for warmup. But this idea would require a Level 2 (240V) home charging station. A 120V Level 1 unit wouldn't discharge enough juice to warm the battery.
In my Model Y, you set the temperature and fan speed by voice command.
Same in the volvo ;) I have one and love to set everything in voice command. It makes it safer by not beeing distracted.
@@richardschmid272 I like Volvos. I've owned a few of them, all 5-cyl engines. Great engine too. ..... I'm amazed at how many reviews don't point out certain voice commands that Tesla's have. Like "turn on windshield wipers". or "Play Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison" (I think it has every song written by man 😀). I keep experimenting and finding new voice commands, all reliably done with virtually no need to repeat the command.
this volvo can do the same thing. he had no clue. it's google based and you can tell it to increase or decrease temps verbally. tesla is not special.
@@cub35guy Yes, I was suggesting he try voice commands in the Volvo. I didn't suggest Tesla was special in voice commands. But no one's better than Tesla. A few are as good. I see reviews all the time where the reviewer didn't know Tesla voice commands either. Hence my suggestion. ..... Plus I keep finding new voice commands I never knew about on my Tesla. I think there are about 50 that I know of.
$100k in my country. Styling looks too stubby and kind of cheap looking. Hope Volvo comes out with an EX 50/60 BEV SUV.
So for 20k more you get abojt the same amount of range!????
Nathan on TFLEV is hard to watch. He is not that into EVs and it shows. Put him in a giant truck and you get a whole other Nathan.
He only likes Toyota's which will never be EV before he retires.
He is really bad!
Most important highways in Montana, Utah, Idaho have 80 mph speed limit and are toll free. Those places are the best for rough testing of EVs.
Agreed. I do love my Tesla Model Y - aws long range, but she doesn't like the cold (below freezing) and she doesn't like going above 70.
I don't mind because unless I'm taking a road trip, I can always charge at home based on my usage. But I definitely see the difference between summer and winter.
Nothing about 36F that is particularly cold. You are not out of the normal operating range of a lithium battery. Climate controls are easy hit the Auto button all confusion removed.
62K and NO Federal Tax credit for a purchase. OUCH. Will not be buying this one.
Is the Volvo XC40 Recharge the first Chinese EV you've driven?

You can't make such a stupid name up... 'Recharge".. too funny.
Should have left car outside overnight would have been a much better test with even lower range. Not enough range on this Volvo..
Let me drive my car around. And here is your video.
I stopped watching at 230 mile range. That means I can’t take longer trips without hoping the fast chargers on the road will be working.
The infrastructure is getting better and better every day. I took a 1,000 mile road trip in 2019 in an EV with at 238 mile EPA-rated range. I did this in the dead of winter, with temperatures averaging around 20ºF. I survived, don't be such a baby.
And remember, 230 miles is the EPA combined range estimate. You'll lose at least 10% of that if you are only doing highway driving, then after the first leg of the trip you can only fast charge 10-80 so you'll lose another 30% off that number. That 60% you have left is only 138 miles, so at 75MPH you'd have to charge for half an hour every 1:50 of driving. Sounds like a fun trip.
@@Snerdles I have a chevy bolt and here in New Hampshire the Range drops to as low as 100 miles in cold weather. That’s not a problem for me now because I have a elderly relative in a nursing home a few miles away and I can’t go anywhere, but soon I’ll want to take longer trips, and that means a Toyota hybrid for me.
@@seniorcousin Same reason I'm in a PHEV. Charging infrastructure is abysmal in my area. My city doesn't even have a fast charger. The closest is about an hour away and only 50kw. The 350's on a few highways are all filled with comments of people only getting 30-40kw out of them. My PHEV can real world drive 900km on a tank of gas so never a worry on any long trip, my bladder will give out way before my fuel tank will.
