Gavin I watch all your reviews, I absolutely love your enthusiasm and your seated heats. You are the only person who measures the height of the drivers seat, and this can be a deal breaker for some, also you spoke about the subscription in a recent article and this is never really discussed. This is a great review and I really want one.
Highly entertaining review as always, Gav! :-) But you've made me quite sad... I miss my ol' Mk 3 Ford Capri... that was a beautiful car that I regret letting go all those years ago.
Just a couple of clarifications: the hump in the floor houses part of the battery. This means they can put less batteries underneath the feet of the backseat passengers, making the rear seating position more ergonomic and comfortable. To me that's a good thing. Also: "snöskidor" is not a word in Swedish. It's "skidor", but thanks for the effort.
For long distances in New Zealand, a "space saver" tyre might be OK, but here in Australia you are very likely to need to travel over 80 km after changing the tyre. I know of others who have been caught out with Volvo's lack of a spare tyre. The Volvo is made in China, but it's designed in Sweden. A few years ago, my wife and I travelled through some of Europe by train. The numbers of smokers in railway stations was difficult to believe for an Aussie.
Unfortunately many cars these days don't come with a spare, i suspect because, without a spare, that improves efficiency due to not carrying that extra weight. Plus it improves their cargo capacity (on paper). I drove its sister the other day, Polestar AWD. Id prefer the Volvo (Until i realised the hump, Polestar didnt have that) but end of the day given the cost the range isn't enough for me. That is shoddy about the tunnel hump in back, Kia/Hyundais which share a platform with ICE such as Niro and Kona, dont have such a hump.
The "hump" houses part of the battery so there can be less batteries underneath the floor in the backseat. This makes the backseat more comfortable and, being a backseat driver myself, I enjoy this.
Note that while XC40 (and C40) Recharge vehicles are produced in China for New Zealand those vehicles are also produced in Ghent, Belgium (which supplies North America) and in Malaysia and India.
Being a poor oldie, my target car is an older BYD E6 ex taxi. A big battery, lots of range and lifecycle but no DC charging. Gav, how dumb would it be to buy a car that is AC only? I remember watching and enjoying your conversion of an old sedan to electric, maybe 15 years ago. What was it, a tredia? I'm hoping you'll document your latest conversion for all of us to grab ideas and motivation. Keep up the Kiwi humour.
You remembered the Tredia! That put a smile on my dial. Yep, I'm creating a video series on my own TH-cam channel about my Autin Allegro EV conversion. All the best and thanks for the kindness, Craig. -Gav
Only one thing I'd mention is volvo have told me last week in a showroom, space savers aren't safe with this car due to the tourqe of it. I asked if i could get one
hey gav, this car looks great. on twitter everybody talks about tesla cars and tesla stocks, but we know that not everybody wants to buy a tesla. and i think there are some EVs out there that satisfy those people. Tesla is like an iPhone. It is the most popular out there. But there are still people willing to buy non-apple products and pay a premium for it! Nothing wrong with that. If every car on the road is a Tesla, the world wouldn't be that fun.
I do love the idea of quick electric hot hatches becoming affordable in the future. 100k is still way out of my price range ever but if the Chinese brands can start undercutting that, that would be awesome. The challenge will be staying efficient with the extra weight of the 2nd motor without adding a huge expensive battery. Rumours the BYD Atto 2 and MG4 will have AWD models so will be interesting to see how much those end up being.
MG4 Milan triumph edition is available in UK now. Expected to be $46k in Australia if it ever lands. If that happens it will be the budget performance car of the decade. Faster than a AMG A45 and lighter cheaper than a model 3 performance
I find it funny how reviewers “discover” clever features that have been around for almost a decade. My 2015 Volvo V60 has a headrest dropping switch. BTW had the reviewer ever driven a V60 he wouldn’t have started the review with disparaging remarks. BTW, besides tires brakes and a battery, it has had no repair needs and is a great cornering driver.
Hey Jeffrey! This is you writing from the future. Guess what! You don't have to wait for long. In just a few weeks Gavin will actually test the Skoda Enyaq! Yay!
Head office in Sweden, biggest research and development in Sweden, still one assembly plant in Sweden. Chinese ownership is 80%. When Volvo was owned by Ford, I never heard anyone saying Volvo is an American car.
Why do electric car testers insist on using the unit kw and not horsepower? Using the unit of measurement horsepower works just as well on electric cars, and is a unit of measurement people are used to. People seem to think that when it is an electric car, then the unit kw must be used, which is not true. So please, use horsepower that people can relate to.
Because that's the default unit of electric motors. You don't need to know about the horses to know it's power. You can look for the 0-100 kmph for that.
Volvo is another over priced box on wheels. Personally I think the vehicle is ugly. Who needs a really quick vehicle of any type? What is needed today are vehicles people can afford without taking out a for-ever loan!
Volvo is a scam! My 2023 Volvo has a steering wheel that vibrates very badly, making it quite annoying and UNSAFE to drive, and Volvo doesn’t want to fix it.
$100,000 for 78KW battery but just 450km's range ? Entry level Model 3 Tesla in NZ is about $67,000 with a 62KW battery and 491KM range, or $83,000 for the long range with 82KW battery and 602KM range. lol pass, jesus this thing's overpriced, lacking any decent drive assist features, which you didn't even bother going into except "lane assist", despite mentioning cruise control earlier in the video, and it really has little to justify $100,000 except for heated rear seats and dimmed mirrors ?
Yeah but Teslas are garbage quality with so many missing features. You can get an MG4 or BYD Atto 3 which are cheaper and better than Teslas so there is that right?
Most impressively is that it is a Volvo built in China. This is quite interesting the development made by the Chinese in the tech automotive industry. Just mental!
Nonsense. Provided the spare is the same diameter and a correct fitment for calliper clearance etc., the diff (the only part than can possibly be damaged) will be fine. If placing on a different vehicle, on a non driven axle, diameter is less important. Only issue is if you have miss matched diameter tyres across drive axles.
Great video, I love those "seated heats" :)
and in the back too!
I've watched tons of reviews of this car at this point, this is definitely the best review I've seen

Highly entertaining review as always, Gav! :-) But you've made me quite sad... I miss my ol' Mk 3 Ford Capri... that was a beautiful car that I regret letting go all those years ago.
Hi! Another great function is the voice control system. Its fantastic. Better then any other carbrand.
Great review! Yes this car is amazing! I picked mine up a month ago and l love it!!!!
Seated heats in the front, and seated rear heat as well! What school did you go me lol. 3:19

Sounds like they found a use for the floor hump rather than coming up with it as an ideal solution
"snöskidor" is definitely a Swedish word. Can be used to describe skis that are not of the cross country skis variety.
@@fl3xxxo Maybe in your part of the world but not here in Sweden.
@@IverKnackerov I totally agree with you. They found a smart way of making the rear seat more comfortable.
Great Review. Got me a smile at some points. I nearly felt the same, and i only drove the rear single motor version.
Enjoyable video. Good work.
Great review, can't wait to pick mine up. But I have to wait till september.
Best review of this car there is.
I absolutely love your reviews lol. Keep it up champ.
Gav mate, I'm still waiting for your stand-up act. Hilarious!!
Also - I want that car now. :D
Love the review, the enthusiasm is great
Awesome review!
Why do you keep saying seated heats? The first time you said it I assumed it was a slip of the tongue?!
Because that’s what people call them. My girlfriend has had them in her car for four years and has never said it correctly yet.

Oh, gosh, I thought I am haring things. Seated heats are cool!

Volvo's have always produced sleepers tbh, looks good.
Seated heats in the front AND rear.
Wait, what?
😄
Great car and the same format as the polestar 2 - I prefer the polestar shape if I’m honest.
volvo... the way to go. i have the sister... c40. simply excellent.
Lane keeping assist is all well and good but when are we going to see pothole dodging mode in cars destined for NZ? 🤔

Why do oceanic people use the term “kw”, rather than “Hp”?
Metric system
