  • Welcome back, classic car enthusiasts! In today's video, I remove the cylinder head on a 1931 Model A Ford Deluxe Roadster using a homemade tool crafted specifically for this task.     Looks like someone welded chunks of metal to the rod faces in order to take up the side play resulting from the babbitt-to-insert conversion.
    I've never seen or heard anything alike - probably for a good reason.

      Yeah, this is an early conversion and sadly the inserts are no longer available except for the standard size. Luckily the ones in these are in good shape.

      @@edselsadventures Well, you probably found out by now, but if I had to guess, this could also be where all the metal shavings came from. I'd have a good look at the welded pieces on the rod caps and see if their surface is scored in any way to make sure this isn't the case.
