- Super Mario Bros Wonder is one of if not the best game in the 2D Mario series. The main reason it’s so good comes down mostly to the wonder flower and the various wonder effects. This can do anything from transforming mario into a slime, starting a pumpkin party, spawning in a lot of enemies, and more. So today I thought it would be fun to rank every effect in super mario bros wonder from the worst to the best!

As somebody who spent over a YEAR trying to program a “roll on walls” power-up for one of my games, the Wubba is everything I’ve ever wanted and more. I want an entire GAME where you play as that thing, the controls are buttery-smooth and the music is pure dopamine.

Well, reminds me a bit of Smartball. And its cancelled sequel, Smartball 2. It was made by Game Freak (nowadays known for Pokémon), but Smartball was published and owned by Sony. Smartball 2 was cancelled when the Nintendo Play Station project was cancelled and Nintendo said "We're going with Phillips", and this also launched the Sony PlayStation. But anyways in Smartball (or Jerry Boy in Japan) you can stick to walls and ceilings, but Wubba can take corners that "Jerry" cannot (going from ceiling to going up a wall, or going down a wall to a ceiling, trying to take this corner in SmartBall causes you to fall off)
I wonder if the Wubba was an indirect jab at Sony!

I also like how this one turns the talking flower things against you. Them saying stuff like "you'll never escape" was so funny.
So glad to see the metal mario effect as high as it is. It's nothing special in terms of gameplay but man it's brilliant to have metal mario in an electricity-based factory level. and the song is a banger too

Honestly I might like the Puffy Lift one the best. Being able to play as what is essentially just a level mechanic is so funny, and it's something you could only really do in a video game.
I actually like the ones that make you invincible, the star ones are super satisfying because of the invincibility and magnet you can rush and get a lot of stuff and killing enemy after enemy by running into them is a lot of satisfaction! and the lava one makes you play the game in a very different way while still maintaining the original movement, to me they are very much fun!
Agreed! He seems to hate anything that reduces the challenge but sometimes you just want to feel overpowered and enjoy the vibes.
While the Star Rain is cool, all the other effects that give you stars or the invincible Lava Swim one is lame
Favorite Wonder Effects: Boat from Evade the Seeker Bullet Bills (this is my favorite period), Snowfall from Pokipede Pass, Dragon from Dragon Boneyard, Silhouette Stretching (Specifically in Fluff-Puff Peaks Palace because of the music), Airship Lasers from all Flying Battleships, Wacky Pipes (specifically from Swamp Pipe Crawl), Spikey Dance Number, Giant Conk, Wubba Form, and Rrumba Form.

Aw come on! The Shooting Stars effect can’t be THAT bad! I think it looks pretty and it gives you a satisfying rush!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the editing of the Jump Jump Jump section, as it beautifully cuts between the two levels while still staying accurate to the beat of the song.
While I understand the thought process behind “invincibility removes the challenge”, I feel like looking at the abilities that way ignores the rest of their design elements.
So, to counterpoint: “If this wasn’t invincible, would it be fun?”
- Balloon: Not in the slightest. What really sells the balloon form is its fittingly-floaty controls. However, they’re also finicky and imprecise, which would ruin any attempt at ‘challenge’ that could be made. If you wanted to add challenge, you would need to remove most of the enemies, or scale back the floatiness, both of which arguably defeat the point.
- Lavaproof: No, probably not. The dark-level mechanics make the fire a visual treat, but also obfuscate the platforming or enemy placement. More lighting would need to be added to make the challenge fair, but this would also take away from the contrast of the darkness and fire, and frankly that just wouldn’t be as interesting.
- Freefalling: Maybe. The Special level is certainly good, but it also has the age-old problem of “enemies dropped on me from offscreen and I had no warning”, which I’ve seen 90% of players die to at least twice. I don’t think the first level would be ‘more fun’ without the stars, though - you’d either need to ditch the time-limit or make the whole segment longer. To me, the fun part is trying to hit all the enemies while you’re invincible. It’s like how that wall-jumping poison level in MM2 was a late-game stage; because that kind of challenge can be extremely frustrating to practice.
I can tell that difficulty and obstacles are clearly something you value, but I feel like tagging the “fun invincible romp” powers as “terrible” is kind of harsh. We’ve all played Mario Maker 2 before, so I think we all understand how “difficult” and “interesting” are not exactly the same thing. :V
Especially when he was flaming the level with the lightning, like bro, if you dont like it, dont collect the stars
Counter-counterpoints
Balloon: I don’t see why this wouldn’t be fun if you weren’t invincible. Just look at SMM2’s P-Balloon levels, you can absolutely make a fun challenge with controls like that.
Lavaproof: I didn’t even know you were invincible in this segment and was able to not get hit just fine. The area is already bright enough, plus all the hazards emit a glow that can help you spot them. Really, the hazards have no point if they’re just set dressing.
Freefall: You can easily make a freefall without doing a Special-5 and dropping enemies from the air. Just have some flying enemies coming at you that you have to circumnavigate.
Having all of these be invincible are really just wasted potential.
@@willemklomp8178The problem is there’s no reason not to collect the stars. It doesn’t benefit the player, there’s no special reward, and the effect is clearly designed with the stars in mind.
@@danieldavid3766 My point was that the Wonder Balloon effect *doesn't* control nearly as tightly as the SMM2 one. If it was just the SMM2 balloon, then sure, yeah, it'd be workable. But it's not - it's even more slippery and floaty and generally hard to get a grip on. Without invincibility, the Wonder Balloon as-it-is would be miserable with all the enemies around. The devs decided that the vibe of "floaty balloon-iness" was more important than trying to really challenge the player, and personally I think it's perfectly fine and fun as a one-off.
I do get where you're coming from with the other ones, though.

Honestly the super star dash effects were some of my favorites in the game because it just feels satisfying to blaze through everything like a rocket and the feeling of invincibility is so fun

It's an excellent sign of the game's quality when I see a ranking of the Wonder Effects, think the bottom ones deserve to be higher, but then realize it's just because they're all great. The only other rankings to make me feel that way are for the galaxies in Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, my literal favorite games of all time.
Also nice touch using the Tears of the Kingdom theme for the skydiving Wonder. 👀

The "Top Down View" Wonder Effect reminds me of RPG Games for whatever reason and seeing it for the first time *in game* was a pleasantly amazing surprise to me. 😊 Thankfully I've also never watched any other trailers for the game outside the reveal one (for obvious reasons), as well as that entirely SMBW dedicated Direct, so that the surprise for this Wonder Effect (just like many others) wasn't ruined out of my personal experience with the game. Definitely in my Top 5 favorites for the concept alone, very fun and creative for a 2D Mario game.
I feel like some of the super star complaints, such as the free fall or floating wonders aren't that big of a deal cause you can simply avoid the stars if you don't want to use them, unlike in the star rain wonders
They make it very hard to, the stars move into your path and they're surrounded by purple coins
Sad that they didn’t add an effect that turns you into Dry Bones

You're correct! That's NOT him! Once the Wonder Seed is collected, you see him turn into an ordinary boo (and the crown falls off screen). Insert your own “Luigi's Mansion King Boo is the true King Boo, the ones that appear in the main series are fakes” theories here-

The thing about the singing Piranha Plant wonder effect is that it's not the best, but it is peak, so it deserves to be higher

I think that the pipes falling in Pipe-Rock Plateau Palace was the most innovative thing in gaming history and hate you for putting it so low. I was worried that my opinion could never be voiced, but thank god you said that I could let you know ow in the comments!

The falling pipes in PRP Palace are really creative! The falling pipes not only serve as a dangerous obstacle that can crush you, but the also change the path of the level!
I feel like there's so many ideas I could be even better cannot wait to see a follow-up to this game

I'm doing a course of video game development, and one of our trimesters was 'Game a Week'. We basically had to make a prototype of a game inside of a week for 13 weeks straight. One of them I tried to recreate the number 1 effect here, the TopDown. There was just something so engaging about that effect that I just had to try and recreate it myself.
I mostly agree with this list it was put right really nicely.

I get that it is stumped that they used the boring design for King Boo but I think that the cool design represents him having more power in the haunted mentions in the Luigis Mantion games rather than the normal ghost houses found in the normal Mario games (I think).
You seem to be very very invested in the challenge of an effect, which makes my thoughts quite different from yours, since I find being invincible pretty fun

I actually like the balloon transformation, feel like it mimics the bloomps mechanics well, although I think you should've shrunk like they do upon contact with any non bloomp enemy since they bounce off of you, along with making stars less prominent.

You should make a ranking of all the bosses in Mario Wonder. That would be such a unique and entertaining video concept.
No it wouldn’t. All the bosses are either stale Bowser Jr. fights or uncreative run to the end “boss fights” with a random-ass Bowser head attacking you. (Though the fight with Bowser was pretty climatic, it was a shame there was no second phase where you fought the exterior castle as well, with the third phase being it chasing you through the Petal Isles and Pipe-Rock Plateau until you finally reach the entrance to the Flower Kingdom where the Flower Castle once stood and reverse the wonder effect.) ((Also Prince Florian being the true final boss would’ve been pretty cool…))

You know in the falling mario, floating mario, and balloon mario effects you can just avoid the stars. There’s nothing forcing you to collect them and it’s not like the game’s making them hard to avoid, heck in my first playthrough I completely missed the fact there were stars in those effects until they were halfway over
the leaping mackerel wonder effect reminds me alot of the pump works from bowser’s inside story and idk why
17:10 I did this one wrong, I didn't think about the fact that you have to hit the spike ball from the side. I rolled it over the top of Mario making it harder, but I enjoyed it more when I did that.
