    I had my 80D for over a year now and I am very happy with it, and really love the dynamic range.

    80D at ISO 320 + 5 stops of light = ISO 10240 WITH A CLEAN IMAGE!!! THAT'S INSANELY AWESOME !!!

      I'm looking up for this test with 90d.

    70D: expose right.
    80D: expose left.
    5D3: save your money.

      I find more intresting the highlight recovery test. Who wants to recovery 5 stops in an underexposed photo? 5 stops is a massive error...unexceptable error 🧐

    The low ISO shadow recovery is what I really care about. I think that is the real practical test here. Good job thanks.

    PERFECT COMPARISON! JUST FUCKING PERFECT!
    I was planing on upgrading from 70D to 80D, just because of Dynamic Range. But since i shoot mostly low light, you kinda save me a 250$, because DR advantage of 80D on higher ISO is invisible.
    Thank you man!

      Well with the 80D you have more resolution and can use more NR in post than the 70D with the same amount of detail. but it depends on if you think thats worth it. Also it has a brighter view finder if you're shooting lowlight. Still up to you though

    • @dzsemx
      @dzsemx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you forgot to turn off chroma noise reduction.
      BTW, the differences are not so huge, sicerely i pushed shadows up only that much in very-very rare occasions, and only when shooting landscapes. For landscape shooters the improvement is noticeable, otherwise on events you use iso400-iso1600 range, and it makes no difference

      Stop!!! The autofocus on the 80D is working until -3ev ;)) without being able to focus the noise performance of any camera will be useless! I think the autofocus system on the 80D is worth the extra investment. All in all the 80D is the better camera in my opinion!

    I currently own a 70D and shoot mostly wildlife / nature. My personal experience with the 70D for usable images would be no higher than ISO 1000 and usually no more than two stops of exposure recovery. I would love to see a re-test of shadow recovery at 400 800 and 1600 ISO with no more than 2 1/2 stops of exposure adjustment. I think this would be more of a real world scenario. Thank you for the great content!

    Somthing to note. I see that when looking at how far you can push the shadows on the 5D you have the lens focal length set to 105mm i assume to have the subject the same size in frame as the crop sensors etc. I know the 24-105L has a fixed F4 value all the way from 24mm to 105mm but did you know the T stop actually changes T is light transmission. That lens from wide at 24mm to 105mm actually loses just under 1 third of a stop of light. It would be more fair to use a fixed prime lens and not change any values. Good vid keep up the work. Just a bit of a heads up my friend.

    Cranking up 5stops from 3200 is craziness.. 80D did pretty good in your tests at lower ISOs.. Even i was planning to upgrade for its dynamic range and i think it is worth the upgrade. Thanks for the comparison

    Enjoyed this video very much. Especially side by side comparision of shots versus one view after the other.
    In the end I liked the 70D detail in most and the color in 80D. From what I heard from others I guess I would rather buy the 70D.

      Because the 80D "wins" the Highlight Recovery .... 2.00 Stops is more than 1.80 thats right. But if you get that this is the ammount of correction the 80D was "closer" to the target than the 80D

    Not the worst test in the world, however in the future be sure to use the same lens across all bodies being tested. This will definitely help with Chromatic noise comparison as the lens itself plays a role in that.

    very interesting - I have just gotten an 80D, I actually think on purpose the default internal profile is biased towards being underexposed in order to emphasise the shadow performance, I had to mess around quite a bit to get used to it after my 550D.

    You should test shadow recovery on ISO 400 or 1000, because ISO 160,320,640,1250... are different then 100,200,400,800,1600. But thanks for this test, DR in video is only reason why I should consider upgrade from 70D to 80D. Now I see that DR is not so big deal. So still better to buy used 5D3 in similar price.

    What's clearly vivid is that only 80D doesn't produce anymore this terrible checked pattern when boosting ISO100 image. The noise is very soft, even with +5EV.

    We reallly need to cut this DR stuff out and get the shots right in camera. Adjusting past a stop in any camera starts to introduce noise and color degradation. Expose the shot correctly from the beginning.

      @cappin6937 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      5D Mk III has a bigger image sensor so you can fit more into a photo, so if you're doing landscapes that may be a better option. Otherwise 80D is cheaper and more all-round photography good.

    Hello! Please compare the new EOS 90D to 80D and 5D Mark IV in terms of dynamic range. 90D has 2 generations newer imaging processor (DIGIC 8) than 80D (DIGIC 6) so maybe they even kept improving their sensors? If so, I might consider not switching to Sony :]

    • @Afnan423
      @Afnan423 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yeah, sony is really tempting, especially for video and indoor shooting, I am currently in a no conclusion situation between 80d and A6300, the 80d has better focus but the 4k and the much much cleaner image of a6300 makes it really tough, Only thing keeping me to stay canon is the cheaper lens options, 50mn f1.8 stm costs around 80 usd for canon while it costs around 300usd for sony,
      also the canon body is 100usd cheaper than the sony,
      but still I can't settle down

    Could you compare eos200d and 80d? 200d is certainly an amateur body but it has quite high DR, according to DxOmark: 13.4 EV, more that 80D's 13.2 EV. I'm sooo curious how this new little body would manage boosting underexposed images in postpro. Is it iso-less or at least close to that? There's no DR chart in DxOmark for 200d. However, there is one for 80D and it IS truly iso-less, which we cannot tell about 5DmkIII... Be ashamed, full-frames! I'm gonna do my work on APS-C and stick to it.

      Chris, people often do it who are new to photography and don’t know how to expose and have to recover mistakes or mishaps. For landscapes with massive dynamic range, pros often combine exposures, or use a half graduated neutral density filter. If a new photographer blows the exposure, it’s really good to have good dynamic range, which is why you see cheap digital cameras having good DR, vs film cameras which have a very narrow latitude. With chrome (slide film) the dr is maybe 1/2 stop. When you learn to expose properly, DR becomes a lot more unimportant. But it’s a great feature to have for beginners.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      5 stops is an extreme example, but you can get an idea of what 3 stops would look like, obviously the 80D is better than the 5Diii in this regard. The 5D IV is also similar as they've improved the dynamic range (retained shadow detail) which has been notoriously lacking for a LONG time in most Canon cameras. Sony / Nikon has had way more latitude in their raw files when under exposed for SO LONG now. They're still ahead, but at least 80D and 5D IV have finally improved.

      The 80D has MUCH better focusing and a higher pixel count (24MP) than the 70D. The sensor works better in low light, has wider dynamic range and incredibly fast focus even when using the rear LCD screen. When it comes to video its no contest.

      Got both cameras, and the 80D is so much better for videos. For still photography, well the upgrade might not justify the price.
