    Tony, I truly believe you are at your best when you do these type of detailed, in-depth, and wide coverage camera comparisons. I just love and enjoy them so much. Please continue to do these type of videos. I and many other TH-camrs look forward to watching them. It makes my computer time worth-while.

    I don't think the Nikon D5500 is the correct competitor to the 80D. The Nikon 7200, at $1096.95 on BH would be the closer competitor.

    • @thefirekisser
      @thefirekisser 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Danny B. I agree, it would make for a better comparison

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Danny B. The price of the D7200 is closer to the 80D, but the D7200 lacks the articulating touch screen. That, to me, is the 80D's defining feature. Functionally the D7200 is more similar to the 7D series.
      If you have questions about the comparison, you can ask. We showed the results for the D7200's focusing test, and the D7200 image quality is very slightly better than the D5500 (though the sensors are really similar).

    • @Daniel_Zalman
      @Daniel_Zalman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tony Northrup I can live with that reasoning. ;-) Have a pleasant Sunday.

    • @Jack_Danyo
      @Jack_Danyo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I own the D7200 and highly recommend that camera. I had an option of either getting the 70d but the image quality was the deciding factor for me to go with d7200. I use it mainly for photography and not video. it is still manageable for video.
      who cares about the screen unless your primary purpose is for video.
      anyways consider your budget, used is probably better.

      @DASSphotography 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nikon D5500 doesnt has HSS sync, and no AF motor :( and it's plastic body, no weather sealed. 80D is much better in those things.

    best review video ever! finally someone shows difference between cameras and compare them to each other. I am about to by my first camera and Idk nothing about it, you clear things out for me. gonna get myself 80d just because it's brand new and it's ok for beginners. keep doing what you doing, as I said it's the best review ever. tnx again

  • @wyoruss
    @wyoruss 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If only the a6300 had a fully articulating touch screen. : ( It would be the perfect camera for me. The 80D lacks 4k video but the auto focus is amazing. Maybe the 90D will be the prefect camera with 4k video. Or maybe the Gh5 will have amazing auto focus and be the camera to beat. For now I have a Panasonic G7 and love it.

  • @FutureChaosTV
    @FutureChaosTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I watched a lot of review and comparison videos of the 80d and 6d mkii but this is the first one that covered the autofocus system extensively as well as low light capability.
    I think you helped me decide on the 80d (love the touchscreen focusing) to supplement or replace my 600d (Rebel T3i?) that just doesn't cut it anymore in low light situations.
    The focusing system just throws itself out of the window at very low evening light and "handshake secure" 1/60th. Can't compensate with higher ISOs because I think anything above 400/800 ISO looks very noisy even with a 50mm/f1.8
    Thank you!

    At the 6:00 you contrast 7DMkII with the 80D saying the 80D lacks the single point AF option. Did it originally not have this. I bought an 80D in November and it has that option. That is how I have mine set up, with just the very center one active.

      Henrik Karlsson the only issue i knew off when buying it was something about a purple hue appearing in certain video shots. I've actually started using this for video over my panasonic gh4 and have taken thousands of photos with 0 problems. The 3d focusing mode has made me like it for photos more than any other camera ive ever used too.

    Was thinking of upgrading my Canon 760D to the 80D for my astrophotography videos. I'm after faster video frame rate @ 1080p and keen on slow-mo speed ramps. 60fps @ 1080p vs 24fps @ 1080p means I can ramp down. I'm not sure if its worth it. I can get 50fps on the 760D but it's 720p. The Sony seems nice but the lack of articulating screen is a right deal breaker. I might rent an 80D and see if it really makes a difference.
    Thanks for the review

    Honestly I am loving the a6300. The af in low light is not the best but in good light it is great. I love having the slog profiles too, the 4k is so crisp. My biggest disappointment in it is the lack of a touch screen and still no usb 3.0 or type C. I mean USB 3.0 has been around for 8 years now, Sony needs to just upgrade from 2.0. Tethering raw files is so slow. I love the camera though, Don't miss my a7 or g7 haha

    • @Klahsy
      @Klahsy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      skatertwig26 still really happy with it? I can't decide on it or the 80D, it'll be my first camera, but I also want to try shooting video and using LUTs, which I don't think the canon can do very well

  • @juhva
    @juhva 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2:50 You say that with 6D you get access to more lenses. Wrong. In 6D you can use EF lenses and in 80D you can use EF- and EF-S lenses

    • @christopherdunn5799
      @christopherdunn5799 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +juhva It would be more fair to say you get more access to "native" lenses on the EF system with a 6D. I believe that was the intention. If you compare EF-S to EF, considering with EF lenses you aren't even using all the glass on a crop body...

      Do u recommend the 70D or 80d?

    • @horndogy2k6
      @horndogy2k6 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      80D for sure if you have yet to buy.
      3 reasons:
      1. Better DR sensor.
      2. A couple of body improvements (extra custom mode and 100% VF)
      3. A couple of firmware updates (Exp comp. available in manual mode + auto ISO, intervalometer, etc...)
      And that's only for stills; I'm not knowledgeable enough on video to weigh in on that front.

    • @horndogy2k6
      @horndogy2k6 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only advantage for 70D over 80D is price, period. I'm waiting for the inevitable price drop on the 80D to buy one.

    Tony, GREAT review, very thorough. Question: how is it that the 80D was far superior to the a6300 when focusing in low light for stills, but the results were reversed in video?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Thanks, Hugh! We used the viewfinder for stills focusing (using the 80D's DSLR-style phase detect focusing) but live view for video focusing (using the 80D's on-sensor dual-pixel AF).

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tony Northrup To confirm, then: the 80D is better at stills focusing while the a6300 is better for video? Fascinating if true!

  • @Diggnuts
    @Diggnuts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Going full frame in the canon line up means you have LESS lenses to choose from as the FF lensen fit on APS-C body, but the EF-s do not not on the FF bodies.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Diggnuts I added an annotation to clarify this, but check sdp.io/ffcrop

    • @Diggnuts
      @Diggnuts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tony Northrup Right, but instead of clarifying it, this video just adds more myths and mistakes on top of this one. The crop-factor times aperture argument for instance is complete baloney.
      Just spot meter with the same lens + setting on and C and FF body to see how this is uninformed tripe.
      Don't be a Jared Polin...

    Should only be six more months until we can finally have our 5D Mark iV, aren't you excited Tony!?!? I'm hoping I make enough in the next six months off of just my photography so it pays for its self. The 80D dynamic range being better than the full frame cameras is good news. Should be even better on the full frame. However, it's never been a big issue to me. But that 1DX Mark ii focus system -3EV, dual pixel AF, hopefully with touch screen, and 4k.... I'll be set the next four years! It'll be cool to see the next 5DSR as well, I don't think they will wait 4 years on it. The market has changed.

  • @Unclewalnut
    @Unclewalnut 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Tony. I am a huge fan of yours. Could you please answer a question for me? You say at the 6:00 minute mark of this video that the 80D does not have single point auto focus. I have seen other reviews on this camera that show the single point auto focus in use. I almost always use single point so I can focus on the eye of the wildlife I shoot. That is a deal breaker for me if the 80D does not have it. Did they release a new version or offer a firmware update that added this feature?
    Thank you sure for your content.

    3:55 in to the video - What camera are you using to film this? If you look at the background it is pulsing in and out of focus or changing exposure all the time, it is horrible. Let me know the camera ( I expect it will be a Nikon due to their usual poor quality and dire reliability.- in fact they have suffered from quality issues ever since I bought my first camera from them in 2002 - but they probably had issues pre dating this anyway) You also should mention the PRODUCT RECALLS for some of these Nikon cameras - 5D etc.

  • @josephkarpinski9586
    @josephkarpinski9586 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I would like to see a more specific test of the AF features of the 80D versus the 7D Mark II.
    Attach the Canon 100-400mm II lens with the Canon 1.4x extender III to each, giving a reach of 896mm.
    The Canon 7D Mark II works at f8 with a single AF point.
    The Canon 80D works at f8 with up to 27 AF points.
    For wildlife photography, especially birds in flight, where a single AF point comes up short, 27 AF points is a welcome change.
    People were excited about the 7D Mark II working with a single AF point at f8, with the Canon 1.4x extender.
    The Canon 80D, working with 27 AF points, with the 1.4x extender iii, and it’s newer lenses like the 100-400mm II, is huge.
    Maybe huge enough to sell the Canon 7D Mark II, with its many excellent features, and buy the Canon 80D.
    896mm with up to 27 AF points, is a game changer, for many amateur wildlife photographers.

    I have a gh4 and I'm thinking about getting the 80d just for the autofocus during video since I shoot events it would be nice to put the canon on a glidecam and get great focus...

    Why are you comparing it to the D5500 and not the D7200? The D5500 is T6i/750D territory and I don't think an articulating touchscreen alone makes much of a difference. I have recommended the D7200 to someone who wants the 80D so a comparison between the two would be helpful.

      +Sigma Octantis The articulating touchscreen makes a pretty huge difference in how you use the camera. If you don't need it, instead compare the D7200 and 7D Mk II.

    I have shooted a lot of indoor sports with Canon 10 series cameras from different years. The lesson learned is that ISO performance is not good enough with 70-200 2.8 lens most of the time. You really need fullframe body to boost your ISO. I don't even see that grain in the pictures is the problem but colors seems to be quote washed out when you start pusing the ISO. For some reason recreating the colors in post processing seems to be really chanllenging and time consuming when picture is take in fluorecent light, I don't know why. If you still want to have good indoor sport pictures with Canon 10 serias the key is to take a lot of pictures. Once in the while there might be a decently focused one in the pack.

    A lot of things are wrong with this video, beginning with comparing the 80D to a Nikon D5. What about a Canon 1Dx II?
    I was surprised when tony said the 80D was not focusing well at f/8 with an adapter. The 80D has 27 AF points. He claimed the 7D2 was better, which only has 1 f/8 AF point. He immediately debunked the 7D2 AF system superiority claim when the 80D totally outperformed the 7D2 in low light.

    I like your videos especially when Chelsea joins for balanced reviews (haha). I’ve an 80d and use ef 70-200 (+1.4extender occasionally) for long shots and ef 100-400 for air shows. So, all the ef range of Canon ef glass is really open to apc cameras, not just ef-s lenses. And my ef-s 17-55 f 2.8 for dimly lit museums and ef-s 15-85 for street photography fit their purpose perfectly.

    Hi Tony, great review, as usual. One point I am not sure I agree with you upon is the shadow noise compared to the D5500. The 80D shadows were lighter to begin with! This means you should have pushed the D5500 shadows to match and then see how noise compared. Why push the shadows in both cameras equally rather than matching them visually? In other words, if you are going to push the D5500, say 3 stops, only push the 80D 2.5 stops because it will end up the same brightness anyway. In real life we aim for a correct exposure, not just to copy what we did on another camera. Great overall review though and I'm definitely buying an 80D. I love watching your videos.

      www.dpreview.com/news/7168986570/canon-shows-dynamism-eos-80d-breaks-new-ground-for-canon-low-iso-dr
      All reviewers seem to agree on this. The 80d is improved significantly in this regard. But couldn't close the gap entirely.
      Tony's makeshift test brought forth the same conclusions as people doing more controlled tests.
      That being said the 80d is indeed a great all-rounder. If it only had C-log and 4k. It would be in back-order all the way to Japan

      +1barnet1 Thanks for the link. I'll take a look in the morning when I'm at my PC. It's 12.30am here. I knew the 80D was still a little behind the D7200, wasn't sure about the D5500.

      Same difference.
      The D5500 is the equiv. of the D7200 in that aspect.
      It isn't in terms of autofocus(TTL). Something Canon really got right with the 80d. Not 7d mk2 right but definately as good if not better in some ways as the D7200.
      That said Tony is reporting ridiculously good numbers for the D5. Considering the D500 uses the same hardware for AF i think there is a new King of Apsc sports coming soon.

    I think that's an understatement @Tony, the 6D autofocus SUCKS! (I own one lol) One thing I noticed with the 80D (I tried one in store) is that the dual pixel is sooo fast it can be used for stills very well (except fast moving I guess). I love the touch screen for that... plus more precise focus in live view (I miss focus all the time at 1.2-1.8 on my silly 6D). Perfect camera? 80D with a FF sensor :D!

    Nice summary, I have always admired the 70D and even more so the 80D. I consider them to be the ultimate Daddy cameras for covering the family documentation on all fronts very well. But already being in the Nikon system I am glad my D7200 is still the king of crops for IQ that you didn't show in comparisons. I love mine more than ever now that I own a Sigma 18-35 I can see all the 24MP goodness.

    Great video guys! You really helped me determine which camera of all these to buy (the 80d). The 6d mark ii and 5d mark iv won't be coming out till the end of 2016 or early 2017, and the 7d mark ii doesn't offer full hd @ 60fps. Either way I can't wait that long to upgrade.

    May I ask; is the 80D's competitor the D7200? the 80D lineup is for video and the D7200 lineup is for what? (im just so curious)
    Will Nikon make a good video camera to compete with the 80D?
    Just your expectations.

    Thanks for the comparison! Honestly, I am still conflicted though. If I have hopes of shooting professional quality photos and videos, which should I choose, 80D or 7DMII? I plan on using Sigma's 18-35mm and 50-100mm both f/1.8. I will be primarily using the camera for indoor sports, most close range, and video(to make gym promo videos). I hope to get good enough with my photos and videos to sell packages for people building websites. These cameras are at the top of my budget, which should I choose.....

    Great Video. I was comparing and watching so many different reviews, I found yours is the best. I had Canon t4i then t6s. Now Canon 6d. I love 6d result, specially works so well in low light and big time difference in colors and sharpness. I love Canon 6D. I guess, if you ever buy Full Frame, you will never go back to crop sensor. Pictures are wider and sharper, vivid & crisp. I wanted to thank you once again to make such great video, helping people like me to pick right body.

    You mentioned the 6D a couple of times in the video as one of the full frame alternatives to APS-C. I've been thinking about making that jump from the 70D as I want more dynamic range for low light photography. But I hesitate because of the age of the 6D. Should I just go ahead and pull the trigger and worry about upgrading whenever the 6D replacement comes out? I rented a 6D last year and liked it.
