    I'm a long time late here, but after trading in my sturdy and reliable 7D, my 7D Mk II just came today. Really looking forward to giving it a good workout. Along with my 1DX Mk III and 20D (not to mention my beloved original 300D that I've had for just about 20 years), plus some reasonably good glass, I'm really happy with my current kit. Since what I have will more than meet my needs for the indefinite future, I'm not concerned with moving to mirrorless.

      @@The_Algorithm_ I love it! The pairing of that body (which is built like a tank) and the 24-105 lens is fantastic. When I go birding, I put my 100-400 on that camera and my Sigma 150-600C on the 1DX and things are in great shape.

    You have most beautiful looking video in months and guess what, it is done with 7D Mark II and you are actually talking about average image quality. Really guys? Please do not shoot some underexposed black object and than add +5EV in post to prove us how D3300 has better image quality. Why don't you go outside and take some three-dimensional color photos of something simple, like grass or sky and than try to show us how 7D Mark II has worse image quality than Nikon D3300. If you can. Also, just use that 70-200 at f2.8, please, do not be afraid. I am also surprised to hear comment about size and shape of the 7D grip.
    Still, amazing review, very informative, done with lot of effort and overall great production (not only because using Ronin). Well done!

      @TheCameraStoreTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ejbernal2 I like the compositions and a few of the shots in the review, but when editing I was constantly fighting the soft image and low dynamic range. It's subjective, but I think the X100T, Sigma Quattro, D750 and Phantom 2 videos look much nicer. But I'm glad that everyone likes how this episode turned out!
      Jordan @ TCSTV

    • @banemitic
      @banemitic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheCameraStoreTV You just can't ignore colors that Canon camera produce. It is subjective, but everybody agrees about that. Immediately after I hit playback of this video I saw something better, more pleasant and then Chris said that you are using 7D2 for filming. Yes, dynamic range is not good on Canon DSLRs but it's not like it is much better on similar (DSLR) cameras. And second part of the problem and probably bigger regardless dynamic range is h264 compression combined with 4:2:0 which makes any color/exposure correction very hard. I am not defending Canon, I am just saying.
      But I have to defend Canon about "soft image." There are to many cameras with over sharpened videos that just are not pleasant. You have to remember that sharpness of digital sensors is big problem in movie industry. They just want image with less sharpness. If you use three digit ISOs you can make Canon DSLR footage sharp in post and it is not like every second you need amazing dynamic range, but it is very hard to replicate colors of Canon cameras and with compressed footage almost impossible.

      I sorry but recovery in post when things go wrong matters. Also I don't know why everyone is saying this video looks good. Blow highlights everywhere with poor rolloff. While I think sometimes other videos on this channel come across a little to flat, this is the horrible opposite extreme.

    A big part of the appeal of this camera are the great lenses that work so well with it, particularly the new 100-400mm II. It's an exceptional package.
    For pros, the combo of one of the 5D variants + 7DII will be a pretty compelling package. The 7D adds capability rather than just being a backup.

    "The metering is very Canon" ..... clearly you weren't shooting in Manual mode then since on the 7DII the light meter disappears from the top LCD altogether and in the viewfinder it moves from the bottom to up the right hand edge. Anything but "very Canon" and for me who also uses a 5DIII it is friggin annoying!

    Hi Guys, Nice review. Not big on DSLR filmmaking ,but yes for stills. The 7d Mark II looks good and has some nice features. I shot the TV series "Bluff" in Calgary with a 5d Mark III. At first, I was hesitant, but loved the way it held up under low light conditions. Images were very clear and holds up in a larger format. The 7d Mark II as well as most of the Canons are great for TV. In terms of filmmaking, after seeing the Nikon's image clarity on your review, I am sold. I would rather get the sharpest image possible and dumb it down in post later or ad a filmic look. I am going to look at more comparisons on here. Keep up the good work!

    Would the Canon 7D Mark II also be good for portraits and weddings?

    • @kevindiossi
      @kevindiossi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So far, I would say yes. It's really knocking on the door of a 5D3 with some of its capabilities, but not quite there yet. Skin tones look amazing and accurate while the noise performance can work in most wedding environments. The honest truth is that at 10fps, I shot an event and let it do a 2-3 image burst for many shots - especially speaking people. You get home and throw them on the computer and see that one of the burst shots looks great and the others may have them with a weird expression or blinking. I see this as a real work benefit that surpasses the 5D3 for shooting an event/wedding. It it capable of possibly capturing a particular moment better.

    • @Smoothblue90
      @Smoothblue90 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BRENNAN'S TECH BITE Yes, if you buy 7D for sports and wildlife it will be very good for portraits and weddings, but 6D and 5D will be better. If you buy 6D or 5D for portraits and weddings, they can still take sport and wildlife photographs, but 7D will be better the more and faster the subject moves or the smaller or farther away the wildlife is.

    Wow that is really good 720p video. Oh wait! That is 1080p. With 4K cameras now this just isn't going to cut it for video. The AF looks really good but the final product just isn't there.

  • @PeterBrockie
    @PeterBrockie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    One note about the 1080p/60 mode you would have mentioned is it has limitations. You do NOT get the on-sensor phase detect AF, nor can you record in ALL-I.
    Pretty annoying for someone like me who likes 60 fps video, but it's a good camera so far (for me) so I won't complain too much.

    I still have my 7DII 4 years on and its been saturated with rain, salt spray, had a rough life in Aussie heat and cold yet still produces the goods. Yes the images can be soft in crap lighting but a little basic editing in lightroom and its fine. Its been a great partner to my 5DIII and as Im hearing there will be no 7D3 I think I will hang onto it. I've seen images in print taken by both the 7DII and the D500 and to be honest cant pick which camera took what, a lot has to do with the photographer and their editing skills, I will say that its a workhorse, not perfect but certainly never lets me down

I only shoot stills, but even before the video got to Jordan's part, I instantly was able to see how soft the video was particularly when someone's face was in view, etc. At first I questioned whether the video was in 720p or something was wrong with my eyes. Just like Jordan said, no fine details.

    I cant understand why you would review a camera like this taking street shot when the majority of buyers will be shooting wildlife. This is a great camera for that far ahead of it's competition. Go out and shoot something real for a change.. As far as sharpening set your camera up properly plus if you do shoot wildlife get a good L lens you don't have to get a 400 f/4 get a 100 - 400 or a 300mm f/4 that will be in the reach of most people. That's just my two cents ! LOL !

    I got the 7D2 because it addressed specific issues I had with the 7D. Although I have used it for night photography, the main reason was for wildlife/bird photography. The almost silent shutter of the 7D2 has afforded me excellent '2nd' photos when the loud 7D shutter would have scared off the subject.
    As for the CR2/Raw files being soft: Well,with every variety of camera I personally have used I have had to do sharpening. Not a lot, but it seems to be the nature of the digital beast.
    I like pairing it with my L 100-400, or Sigma 150-500.

    Every camera has trade offs. For example, sure the Nikon D3300 has 4 extra megapixels but the 7D Mark ll has double the burst rate and get usable shots until ISO 12800. Maybe.

    Saw your 80D review, I decided to check this old one out. I'm wondering which will be best for video work. The 7D Mk II have more focus points, less moire, better lowlight and a clean HDMI out. The 80D have articulating touch screen useful for focusing, sharper video (from comparisons I've seen) and WiFi which enables monitoring and tap focus pulling with app. Really torn between the two.

    • @reoflex
      @reoflex 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Hojda To be honest though, the advantage in picture IQ of Nikon's cheapest and Canon's most expensive, only apply with pictures taken in great light. Canon cameras will blow the cheap Nikons out of the water when it comes to shooting in low light, such as weddings, events, indoor sports. Still, Canon should take this as a problem that needs to be corrected. It shouldn't be making sensors that can't compete with the Nikon cheapie, especially at the price points they are selling these Canon Cameras.

  • @criticalpoint7672
    @criticalpoint7672 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't you just love it when big youtubers present false information ? Because they don't understand basic things like the fact that Canon and Nikon are processing images differently and that can give the APPEARANCE of one having better dynamic range than the other. Canon is well known for having more contrast in their color profiles than Nikon has and that obviously cuts down on the APPARENT dynamic range contained in the images, because that affects the way you make your exposure in the first place. But if you understand this aspect then you can setup Canon cameras in such ways that you'll get more dynamic range out of the sensor, by simply dialing down the in-camera contrast at the time of the exposure. Then you'll see that in fact Canon and Nikon are neck in neck when it comes to dynamic range. Or for example load the Technicolor Cinestyle color profile on a Canon camera to see the real dynamic range the sensor is capable of and then compare it to any Nikon camera from the same category. Not only that it will match it, but most likely it will also surpass it. It is simply a myth that Nikon sensors have better dynamic range than Canon sensors, myth kept alive and promoted by people who fail to realize that when comparing two different systems you can't be possibly comparing the same exact luminosity/color science behind the raw files. It is simply a software issue, not a real hardware problem.

    • @TheXaelem
      @TheXaelem 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aah buddy, you got it so wrong it isn't even funny.
      When shooting jpg then profiles have an affect, but when you shoot raw it has no affect whatsoever.
      Now I am no Nikon fanboy, I use canon exclusively and the 7dII is still to this day my go to camera, but it most certainly does have less dynamic range than competing Nikon cameras. No doubt about that.

    • @criticalpoint7672
      @criticalpoint7672 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheXaelem You are dead wrong. Read my comment carefully. When shooting raw you check your histogram or your exposure meter, right ? And then you adjust your exposure settings accordingly, isn't it ? Well, the color profile you are using affects your contrast and because of this it also affects your exposure meter, so it can have an impact even when you are shooting raw. Because you are adjusting your exposure settings based on a color profile. So regardless if you are shooting raw or jpeg, the color profile will have a direct or an indirect impact on your dynamic range. I heard this argument 1000 times, that the color profile has no effect when shooting raw, but it definitely has, through exposure.

    I purchased my first DSLR, a Pentax K-30, for a trip to Antarctica. I LOVE this sturdy camera and the wildlife photos I was able to take as a total rookie. However, I've reached its limits (especially when photographing birds) and want to move up. Here is my dilemma: Do I sell my K-30 body and buy a K-3 now (only a few hundred $ out of pocket), keeping my existing lenses _or_ do I save my $ for another year until I can finally buy into Canon's universe of lenses with the 7D Mark II? I guess what I am asking (being the impatient sort ), what features, beyond lens selection and availability, are significantly superior on the Canon 7D Mark II vs the Pentax K-3? Also, does Nikon have something in the pipes for wildlife photographers?

      @itschriswinter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brian Michael Yep, i think so. Although they both have very similar Dual Pixel Autofocus systems, the 70d does still have an advantage (for video especially), in that it has a touch screen, allowing you to select exactly where you want it to focus, as well as having a swivelling screen which allows you to use it at different heights. Both great cameras though!

    Nice review - tempted to get one for its weather sealed capability and autofocus. I can skip a generation though and use my 7d/5d2 combo. Or most likely scenario wait till the price crashes over time before I pick one up half price. I'm not an early adopter but good to hear the people who actually bought it, like it from comments so far.

      Things like the MP count (20.2) is a basic statistic and can be found anywhere, and it doesn't shoot 4K. I don't think there is a traditional DSLR that shoots 4K. Yet.

    I haven't tried the 7Dll, but from everything I have heard, your conclusion is the same as mine, i give Canon some credit for the auto focus system, and how the sensor works for live view and video, but this is 2014, and there is no excuse for the entry level Nikon to have better image quality as far as sharpness and dynamic range, there is also no excuse for a lack of a fully articulating touch screen, or wi fi, screw the ruggedness argument, it doesn't hold weight, also the 7Dll is to big and heavy, I am really hoping that Canon will put out something like the new Samsung NX1, and also a full frame version, and I am really hoping that Nikon also does, I switched from Nikon to Canon when I got my 5Dlll, but I have always missed having a Nikon, Nikon is part of me, and I wish they would put the D810 parts in a smaller and lighter camera, even smaller and lighter than the D750, but what I really hope is that Nikon will join the future of cameras, and make a full frame mirrorless like a Sony A7r, but with a fully articulating touch screen, 4k and wifi, and a popup flash, yes I want the ability to have fill flash without carrying around a big speed light like I have to do with my 5Dlll, if Nikon does, I will be happy to go back to Nikon and sell all my Canon gear, but it might be to late for Nikon and Canon, because the new Sony A7ll with 5 Axis IBIS, and the rumored A9 about to come out, and also the Samsung NX1 with a 28mp backlit sensor and 4k, I think Canon and Nikon are about to lose a big part of the camera market, anyway, nice review, I hope you are about to review the new Samsung NX1 and there glass, and the New Sony A7 ll

    I must say I disagree with your review. It is true that Nikon cameras have higher dynamic range than Canon cameras. Bear in mind that Nikon buys sensors from Sony, who is also a camera company. Will Sony stop selling sensors to Nikon one day? Who knows? It is a very poor business strategy to buy sensors from another company. Canon makes their own sensor - that to me is a great idea. Sensor, as important as they are for cameras, are not the only thing critical to users though. Most of the sensor shortcomings can be corrected in post. Being able to attain focus quickly and accurately is more important. You cannot fix an out of focus picture in post after all. Note today 90% of the Nikon cameras are made in Thailand or China. Even the D810 is made in Thailand. That again is a short sighted business decision. I own a lot of Canon cameras and lenses and all of them are made in Japan. I especially have a problem with goods made in China. Not that their quality or workmanship is poor, but I would rather not support a communism and totalitarian regime. I used to shoot exclusively Nikon. Until Nikon changes, there is no way I will use another Nikon camera, period.

      In the current DX lineup, only the D5300 uses a Sony sensor. The D3300 uses a Nikon-made sensor and the D7100 uses a Toshiba sensor.

    • @Thalestin
      @Thalestin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you. I used to shoot Nikon until I found out that half their goods are made in parts of the world that are severely under paid. Im sure the cameras are still good quality but they decided to go with profit over ethics. Most large companies around the world do this but Canon has been the best so far from the major camera manufacturers.
      I cringed when I picked up a 1000 dollar nikkon macro lens and saw the "MADE IN CHINA" stamp. I like my Canon cameras and I find they shoot fine stills. Bottom line is that at this stage of the game, any camera can take a nice still. However, there are millions of terrible photographers out there that want to look at spec sheets rather that get out and shoot with what they have. I will not pretend that I am a fantastic photographer but I understand at this point that if I am unhappy with my shots it is because I did not take a good shot and that it was not a fault of poor camera tech.

      imagine if half of Ford Motor Company's vehicles were powered by GM engines. Would it be a wise business strategy to work out such a deal - buying engines from one's competitor? What if GM stopped selling engines to Ford?
      OK, if Nikon could buy sensors from Sony and put them in their expensive FX cameras, could Canon do the same? If Canon were to use Sony sensors where would Nikon be?
      Either way, Nikon is not wise to buy sensors from Sony, its direct competitor.

      opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ This actually remins me alot of Apple before they went to Intel. They had some shitty cpu's compared to Intel, so they had to make the jump!
      Canon is almost there. They sensors are, to be honest "shitty" compraed to Sony sensors. They will make the jump just like Apple did with there CPU's.
      And that's a good thing! No one says it's a poor business strategy for Apple to use Intel CPU's and mainly Samsung parts in there iPhones.

  • @polyviossimopoulos2436
    @polyviossimopoulos2436 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Came across this video because I am researching for a camera in this class, and I have specifically in my sights this and the Nikon D7200.
    I see you have fearlessly doused the camera with water, but I also see a 35mm [i.e. designed for a “full frame” sensor - I am not referring to the lens focal length, here] *_L [i.e. weather sealed]_* lens mounted on it.
    What has me baffled is this:
    Everybody is going ecstatic about how the 7D MkII is indestructible and how good the weather sealing is, however, when it comes to lenses, *_I have noticed that none of the Canon APS-C lenses has even a mount gasket for rudimentary dust and moisture protection [let alone weather sealing], while all of the Nikon APS-C lenses that matter do,_* and, as I understand it, a weather sealed camera must be paired with a weather sealed lens, in order to confidently be used without issues in adverse weather conditions.
    Therefore, question:
    Which of the two [Canon 7D MkII or Nikon D7200] would you recommend/pick up for shooting sports, wildlife, landscape… in a misty morning or evening or during a mild drizzle or near the sea or a lake, river or waterfall, in a forest, in a dry desert [think Sahara, Arizona, Utah]… with a gentle to moderate breeze, and, equally importantly, with which wide angle zoom, standard zoom and telephoto zoom *_APS-C_* lenses? Does the lack of a mount gasket affect Canon weather sealing - *_and if not, how come?_*
    Being as specific as possible, *_also, possibly, mentioning reliable sources of information on the subject,_* would be appreciated.
    Also, dynamic range-wise: does the Canon DPAF have anything to do with the 7D MkII [and other Canon DSLRs’] worse dynamic range, compared to that of the Nikons [the D3300 that you mention in this video and the D7200 that I am interested in]?

    The 7D2 is less than a full stop better than the original 7D when it comes to low light performance. This is an improvement we could expect Canon to produce with 2 or 3 years since the 7D. Not 5 full years! Do they mean to say that over the span of 5 years they couldn't even improve their sensors by a single full F stop????

My old Sony Nex-5n is superior to my Canon 60D when it comes to DR even in Canons most flat profile (landscape) with minimum of contrast. 5 years didn´t help, it´s sad for all my Canon lenses…. :-(

  • @kevindiossi
    @kevindiossi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review indeed - a little more positive that I was expecting, honestly! Haha The only thing I can say I disagree with is the comment that the images are soft. For me, they've been very crisp when the AF nails the shot. However, I've found the AF to be almost too precise, so I'm learning the settings to get the best results with. I've come home with several soft shots from missed focus. I shot an event today and have always been a "single point" guy...but on some shots, that can really burden the AF to get what I wanted since there are so many of them and that one point may not contain the information it needs to really lock on. Thankfully, the AF lever easily expands out and the camera is so smart it decides well for me. I think unless I'm using 2.0 and faster, I'll be using expanded for many event shots.
    That said, this is the best DSLR I've ever shot with from a Canon. Makes me really see what all the fuss is about a 1DX... Although I think I still prefer the option of no grip sometimes.

      Thanks for your kind words!
      The resolution test was done on a static shot in Live View, so AF was not an issue. The focus is amazing, it's just that the actual RAW capture is not as sharp as cameras with similar sensor size.

    If the Nikon entry level camera is missing an anti aliasing filter, the image is way sharper than any camera WITH anti aliasing filter. That is not a line for argumenting on which one has a sharper image. Ofcourse the Nikon has sharper image because it is missing a vital part for removing moire... which can be removed in process (in some cases).
    Here is a picture taken with nikon d200 with and without anti aliasing filter to see the major difference: www.dreamshine.com/images/MaxMax/D200%20HR/D200%20Car19.jpg
    btw: From canons raw's you can get better hilight recovery than from nikon..
