I choose #4. LOVE the lake and the "dated" decor 😅. It has character!!! I'm old school, so I wouldn't change a thing!!! If it's not broken, why tear it up??!! Love the black tub 😍

Darlene, all the houses were lovely. As I age, the smaller house is more appealing. I love the views of the houses. Those mountains! Just gorgeous. Praying y’all will find a house that meets your needs. Remember, a house is wood, and brick, but it’s the people, the family, that makes it a home. You and Lou will make any house you find, a home that memories are made.❤️✝️🙏

#4 the lake house. All are beautiful but way too much space and yard upkeep for older years. You will have to hire it all out at some point. Didn’t mention how far they are away from medical, daily shopping, and hospitals. I am seventy and have some experience with these situations and health circumstances changing in an instant.

Keep looking. VA mtns make a pool more tricky. Mtns also make for alot of stairs down to the yard. Be sure your budget allows for weekly housekeeper & gardeners w/a couple of these. Decide on a house one of you could live in alone if something happened to the other. #3 was nice & realistic size for 65-90 yr olds. Unfortunately, that's part of retirement planning. Pray for the best, be prepared for the worst.

  • @bhallmark3390

    My honest opinion:
A pool is expensive to keep up-I personally wouldn’t want it.
#3 in the mountains is a no go. Winter there would be treacherous.
#1 is a pretty house, but that slanted back yard is definitely a detriment.
I like #4, even though it’s dated. It’s not horrible. You wouldn’t have to do demolition right away. The yard is very pretty and the house seems well laid out.
Looking forward to seeing what you two decided!
    ❤️-Brenda

A little paint and new floors in house number 4 would be perfect for me. We have a pool which got a lot of use when our kids were young and now it's just a lot of work and nobody uses it but it is pretty to look at. I would love a smaller house on the water.

I like house #1 the best. The kitchen in house # 3 didn’t appeal to me as I don’t like all those open shelves and I really didn’t like the butler’s pantry next to the bathroom. Also I thought it was too small. The last house was my least favorite. As you said it would require quite a bit of work. We aren’t water people but the pool was beautiful. I live in southwest Va and it is a beautiful area. Good luck on your decision.

Number 1. Is beautiful! I don't know what exact age you and your husband are, but I am 55 and I would not want to have to keep that shower clean with all the glass & I would want a house with everything on one floor after building a home 22 years ago with 17 steps just on the inside..LOL. Just my opinion. Just being honest. Number 2 is great too! If you don't like the kitchen, then you should not buy it unless you are able to remodel it. I don't know how many bedrooms you need but think about who you have that will want to stay with you. Also think about how much it will cost to paint and redecorate in the bathroom if you don't like it. Also think about all the trees on the property. They will only keep growing and expanding and taking up your lawn space. I am here to tell you. We live in a woods and we fight the trees and weeds every year that grow out into the property. We are getting older and can't do that kind of work anymore so we have to pay someone to come and do it. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but just stating the truth. The pool is nice but no I would not buy a house with a pool as they are quite expensive to keep up....and no to the stairs. Number 3 I love the kitchen! I think it is perfect but the location...not so much. I love the Butler's Pantry! So cool! Number 4. I love that it is beside a lake! It is dated as you said but has potential if you wanted to spend the money to remodel it. I kind of like the black tub because it is different!...and it is jetted. LOL I almost didn't save my comment since it turned out to be so long. You wanted some feedback for these homes. I hope I was not too critical. They all were very nice, beautiful properties and homes. Just giving my opinion. I hope you and your husband find the perfect home! Sending love and prayers. ❤🙏

I live in southwest Va… right on va/nc line. My pick is # 1 and then # 2. # 1 is beautiful. The pool is nice, but too many stairs. We just recently put in an above ground pool. I love to swim and it is an excellent form of exercise. I’m 63 and close to retirement. I’m so glad that when we built our house that everything we need is on the main floor. My husband does go downstairs periodically where my overflow pantry is to get something I need. # 4 is definitely out. Would not want to tackle remolding at this stage of my life.

Oh my!! Southwest VA is one of our favorite places on God’s Green earth❤❤❤❤Since you asked if we’d buy a pool. There is no way we would. 😬 We had an above ground pool and finally tore it out because none of us would take care of it. MrP’s grandfather and family had an inground pool. He often talks about the amount of work involved. I guess if you have a pool service, they can take care of it for you.

Hi there Darlene, WOW... you are certainly spoilt for choice!!! One thing I have noticed that houses in the States are so large..., although on saying that the new builds here in Australia appear to be huge these days (with media rooms etc...!) but I wonder why they need to be so large???
House 1 - the first thing I noticed was the beautiful flowering Crepe myrtle in the front yard... so gorgeous. The back yard was certainly steep, and I am not too sure about that. Poor Lou would have to mow the lawns, wouldn't he? The house was lovely, and in fact stunning. Now, this is my personal choice, but I am not keen on dark cabinets in the kitchen, as I have always had and prefer white cupboards. My ideal is gas bench cooktop, and electric wall oven...thankfully I have that combination in my home.
House 2 - Again this house is beautiful, although it certainly wouldn't be for me as I am not interested in a pool. However, this isn't me looking to buy is it... LOL! I quite liked the grey walls in the bathroom, and some of the other rooms throughout the house.
House 3 - This house is very different to the others, and yes, I loved the white kitchen. My only concern with that house you mentioned the snow in the winter, but what about the hot summer months with potential bushfires??? In Australia that would be a huge concern.
House 4 - Yes, I can see why it was called the Lake House, and the views from this house simply stunning. Even though this home may need renovations they are not immediate meaning that it is liveable. Again, the kitchen is a little dark, but what about the black bathtub... I do not like it at all! After spending a lot purchasing this home do you really want to spend all that money on renovations?
I loved this video, and it was fun. Thank you, Darlene, for taking us all with you as you house hunt for your perfect new home.
God's richest blessings, love and hugs. Gloria 🤗🌻🏡🏠❤

Hey, Darlene 💚💗. All these houses are so beautiful ❤. My favorite is #3, but I am a mountain girl 😂. This is pretty much where I live, but in the mountains of Tennessee. My home is nothing as beautiful as this, though. Some things to consider might be, because I am a few years older than you and have already been through some experiences: outside work on the property (mowing, etc.) I am 74 and have 11 acres, mostly wooded, but have 3 acres to mow. I am a widow and not in perfect condition 😂. You never know what life is going to bring you as we age. Think of yourself and Lou and don’t get into big remodeling projects that will cause unnecessary stress and expense. Do you plan on moving again? If not, and the good Lord allows you both to live long healthy lives, please make sure any house you choose is safe and easily accessible for you. My children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are so far away that I don’t see any of them often. I miss out on so much 😢. I just had my 11th great grandchild, Conner Samuel last month and I don’t know when I will ever get to see him 😢. As my grandchildren have grown, family visits have become less often because the kids are involved in all their activities and the parents are always running them around or working 😂. I get it 😊. One son wants me to move to Virginia and the others want me to move back to Indiana 😂. I have 2 grandsons at Virginia Tech ❤. I am so overwhelmed with all my “stuff”. I have been on my own and accumulated since I was 17😂. They don’t have time to help me and my finances are not what yours are. They, of course, want to help financially and are very capable, but I will not allow it 😂. I have plenty ❤. Living alone has its perks, but being away from family and living alone is not easy and for me it’s very lonely. Sorry, I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer, I am just trying to let you know how things can go haywire. Also, make sure there’s a good, Bible preaching church close by any house you might choose. Love you my dear sister/friend ✝️🙏🏻😘🤗❤️

Oh. My. Goodness. What a fun video! 1. Yard too sloped, house was too big and too grand for me, didn't like screened porch off master bedroom. 2. House looked more welcoming than the 1st, didn't like anything about the kitchen, porch too tiny, but LOVED the pool and backyard. 3. Loved that kitchen sooooo much, it was so bright and happy. Loved the decor, I could have moved right in. And that view!!! But.....no pool and I think winters could be a problem in an area that remote. 4. House was nice but I get the feeling you'd want to update everything and that could be costly and overwhelming. Loved the view!!! Wow. So.....I personally think you should keep looking, but I support whatever you decide. What an exciting journey for you! ❤

They all have great things about them but would not be my choices because of the stairs. At 60 I’m already having trouble with stairs. I prefer a ranch with a bonus room over garage. I love #1 but it is so big. Even though you wouldn’t need to go upstairs often, there would be many tunes you would have to. And it’s a lot to clean. 😜
The sloped back yard would become harder to maintain. I love #2 with the pool but also lots of stairs. I am a pool gal but with 7 young grandchildren I would be concerned about the safety. #3 not my favorite. Very pretty but just not my style. Being stuck home on treacherous roads might not be the best. #4 with his gorgeous lake views is awesome but the remodel would be a lot. Depends on if that’s something you enjoy.
I say keep looking. I think you can still find a beautiful screened porch, maybe a home with less stairs, a beautiful front porch and a perfect yard for your pool. 😉. Blessings to you!

Wondering what county in SW VA? We sold our second home in Carroll county last year (just off the Blue Ridge Parkway) We loved it for 7 years but once we retired, we realized that we wanted the freedom of less upkeep/maintenance. We absolutely love SW VA though so we just visit often and stay in rental homes. Winter weather is definitely something to think about in that area - you need a snow removal plan and a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Do you want to travel in retirement? Our focus has been on simplifying and minimizing our home and lifestyle so that we are free to travel often and sometimes at the last minute when the weather looks nice. Best wishes in your home search!

Wonderful looking homes or at least the views of some of them. #1 seems like too much maintenance with all the landscaping. Anything with stairs reminds me that I may not be able to handle the steps as I age. Unless you want to install a 1-2 person elevator, which is popular among those that can afford to do that. Slopey terrain is pretty scary as we age, whether it's slippery wet leaves, ice, snow or unsteady gaits as we age, not sure that's a good idea. Also, wouldn't you just want to move in and settle down instead of having to redo many rooms in a house? And lastly, think about all the leaves that require weeks maybe months of blowing, raking and what have you.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Darlene. I hope you keep searching for the one that the Lord has reserved for you and Lou 💝

Well...they are each very different. I would think about stairs indoors and steps outdoors if this is truly going to be for a retirement home. No 1 is definitely the most grand, lots of hills around the house that could be dangerous as you age, but nice that the main living area is all on one floor. The last one was nice near the lake if that is something you like. The one with pool..was so so for me. Keeping up with a pool when you don't live in an area where the pool can be used most of the year to me is kind of useless and lots of upkeep. Good luck! We are looking for a ranch for retirement. If we have to do some remodeling that's ok.

Hi Darlene, 3 is a charmer of a house!
Love the kitchen and shower wall!
Tranquil I could see myself there ( ok ok, Pedro can come too 😂 )
I can see you swim in that pool in number 2.
Wishing you the best in your search for the “happy” home. I won’t say perfect, there’s no such thing, but choose one that makes you both feel that special feeling of peace and joy.
🤗 Thanks for the ride a long.

All beautiful homes but #4 though dated can be a clean slate renovated to your taste. Things to consider before any purchase: budget, location ( close to medical, shopping and family) as we age these are all important considerations . we were 3 hours from our family when we lived in a retirement community last year we moved back 45 minutes from family. We are so happy that we can easily share birthdays, holidays and fun times. Young people lead busy lives and best intentions of visiting many miles away are often difficult to achieve. You have young grandchildren being hours away will make it difficult to attend the many events coming up sporting, school plays etc. Also maintenance of a large property is difficult as we age unless you have budgeted to have it done by others and of course stairs are a big concern as we ae. Good luck and pray you will know when the right property presents itself.

I vote for the pool. As you age, the stairs to get to it might need to be supplimented with a small elevator, but non-impact exercise, accessible into your 80s or 90s? Great idea!

Hi Darlene, my favorite house was house 2. It was raw Goldie Licks house. House one was too big, house 3 way too small and old fashioned. The house 4 is in need of too much work. House 2 had the pool you wanted and you can hire the lawn work done. I will be anxious to see what you picked, if any.

It's YOU. Spectacular! (Just so ya's know...I'm still adoptable. haha) You have some great properties on your list! Awesome! Hope all is well. xoxo My preference would be the pool house. The first house would be out for me for sure. The slope in the yard was way to steep. (I have a physical disability so that may not be a problem for you) and it seemed a little too big. House #2 would be at the top of the list for those pine trees and that pool. And yes, I would buy a house with a pool for retirement because if worse comes to worse and something happens and you need water rehab it is already there. You can always have a heater put in or have a pool company come clean it. Well worth the cost. House #3 - Probably not something I would pick, the height of just driving up the mountain made me dizzy lol, although I am sure you could get a contractor to recreate that kitchen in any house. House #4 - This house looks like it must be an Estate sale based on how dated the inside of the house is. It would need a lot of work but the world would be your Oyster in that sense. I would buy it just for the lake view from every room. Not a fan of that black bath tub either. So in the order I would buy them would be #2, #4, #3 #1 if they all stayed in contention but #3 would almost certainly be ruled out.

#4 make it your own. Beautiful views all around. They are all beautiful! Can't go wrong with whatever you decide. I loved number 3 because of the small comfy size and remote area. We are used to small living so it wouldn't be a problem, but most want grand spaces.

It’s definitely number one. Hands down. You will have your gardening and cooking to keep you busy. Lots more fun than pulling off wallpaper! #4 looked too small to me. And this is the time to enjoy life. As you said with family and friends. I think you could put in a pool in the backyard of #1. I’ve seen many homes that have done it. The first thing I thought of was get a long slip-n-slide to go right into the pool! 😂😂😂 Wouldn’t the grandkids love that! 🛝 thanks Darlene

All the houses are absolutely gorgeous! Practical….I’m not so sure. You definitely will need help in maintenance, house keeping, etc. and maybe you plan to have that. We retired to the mountains of North Carolina and built a small home on a 2 acre lot. It’s 3 levels and 17 steps between each level. Those stairs are getting harder and harder to climb. I have to have help with housekeeping even now. We have company from friends who are getting on in age and the stairs are a struggle for them as guests bedrooms are upstairs. I’m just saying a one level home is so much more practical and worth considering. Good luck with your decision making ! God bless!

Pools are lots of work. I love how excited you are about #3, but three levels? Not too crazy about that. I love #4 just for the beautiful views but think about the sorts of wildlife you'll have to deal with so close to the water -- in my mind the bugs would be out of control. I know this from personal experience because I went to college for two years in northern VA and the campus abutted the Shenandoah River. Never had I seen so many bugs (esp. spiders) in my life. Honestly, I love 4 the very best, but I'm not the one living there. I would say, since you spend lots of time in the kitchen, that should be the main consideration. Plus are you going to want to be going up and down stairs as you get older? Knee and hip surgeries are pretty common as we age and I would not want to try navigating around with compromised joints. I love your videos Darlene, thanks for filming this!
