    I am from Germany and have been in the US several times. I always thought, waiters are rude there because they immediately brought the check after we had finished the last bite :D Even though we do not sit in coffee shops as long as Turkish people, in Germany we take our time and don‘t rush. I like the relaxed Turkish way very much! Also having just two names is very common in Germany. People who have a middle name often do not tell you about it because usually it is very old-fashioned „funny“ as they are named after their grandparents.

    • @pattygraham1778
      @pattygraham1778 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its not to be rude that they bring the check automatically because if they don't its considered Annoying . Most Americans want to leave right after the last bite and hate having to wait forever for the check . Unless there with family they haven't seen in awhile but even then its short conversation there's is done at home or we do our talking as we eat so that by the end of the meal we can just get up and leave. But like any place there are those few that are rude.

      No its not that common, been all over Europe. You would think that in Italy, people would take their time in cafes. No, they drink their espressos in UNDER 2 MINUTES - standing, not even sitting, and leave!
      And people sit or study, usually alone in Starbucks` across Europe, but its not like in Turkey. We sit and chat like there is no tomorrow! This is why I love my Turkish culture lol.

    1. I think that's because employers want to have less workers.
    2. I hate stalker shop assistants but that's their job. Employers say '' Follow customers and help them, that's your job.''. I thank them politely and start to look around by myself.
    3. That goes back to Ottoman era(it may go farther but as i know it is at least an Ottoman thing). Istanbul has always been hosting a large population in Mediterranean region and back then in Ottoman era people had time but nothing to do. Sit and talk culture started to develop. Kıraathane (kıraat= reading in Arabic and hane=house in Persian), meyhane(mey=alcohol in Arabic and hane=house in Persian) etc. taked shape.
    4. In Europe people have names that describe where they are from or which family they belong to etc. (for centruies). That shaped the culture of having surnames, middle names, family names etc. In Ottoman era rulers thought parting families and tribes will eliminate the possibility of them to revolt. Before 1934(Surname law) Turks didn't even have surnames.

    As a Canadian, I was really surprised by # 4. Honestly, I never realized that Americans could give a lot of importance to middle names. This is something I would expect more from someone who is Brazilian or Spanish... Here (in Quebec) we may have middle names on our birth certificates, but we spend the most part of our lives just ignoring them. I can't think of a single time someone asked me what my middle name was, even though I do have one. It seems to be an old tradition that is fading, at least where I live... And if we have more than one person with the same first name, from my experience, we can always include the use of the last name or even nicknames...

    It's a weird tradition some villages in Turkey for example %60 population of males have the same first and last name in that villages, for example if baby born in "Arife Günü" that means "Arife Day" its a day before religious holiday they name the baby Arif. Because of that most people have a nick name in that villages.
    Here is a funny story, in Ordu/Perşembe/Yazlık village everyone have a same last name, one day a person died called Lütfiye Sarı and the muhtar (headman of the neighborhood) send declaration of death papers to registry office, in same time city hospital do it the same thing. So there is a another Lütfiye Sarı in the village, so she accidentally was recorded dead. Some day her sons while editing some documents in the registry office they said your mother is dead, so they go the court with muhtar because of that and after judge see her she is alive they fix the thing.
    In that villages so many funny and cruel nick names they got, one day i met with 74 years old men called "Pilli Hasan" that means "Battery-operated
    Hasan" because he had pacemaker surgery.

    - You start bagging the groceries as they come
    - When its time to pay, you pay, get ur receipt, change and whatnot
    - Continue bagging as the next person's groceries start coming through. It's pretty simple.
    Shop assistants stalk people because they are -very aggressively- pushed to make sales.
    We live slow in İzmir, I do also get bored sometimes but thats more about the quality of the conversation than the actual time spent at one place.
    I hate everything about meyhanes.
    I honestly dont think there are enough occasions in life to warrant the need for a middle name, mine got handy in high school however, as there were 4 Ahmets and 2 Buraks and one person was named Ahmet Burak (sets, anyone?).

    Hey Chelsea, I'm a Turkish, Istanbul local, firstly they have helpers for grossery shops generally everywhere in Turkey maybe you 've never come across one of them or maybe the owner fired them because of economical difficulties.
    Shop assistants take bonuses for every item they sell in most of the shops or their boss tells them to follow the customers all the time.
    Turkish people loves talking, chatting to each other because we have real friends, it's not like America; you make a conversation or drink a shot of espresso and move on. And we don't have the personal space "concept". We have Meditarrenean blood like Spain, Italy and Greece we are very similar. Also we have a lot of unemployed people youngsters and women mostly. People have no "do sports" or "travel" ideals in general. That is why they sit for hours in the same place and drink çay :)
    Meyhane: Tavern or us Turkish people we also say Taverna
    The way world use middle names today originated in the Middle Ages when Europeans couldn't decide between giving their child a family name or the name of a saint. They eventually settled on naming their children with the given name first, baptismal name second, and surname third. That is why Turkish Muslims do not have middle names.
    Take care Chelsea! :)

    Dear Chelsea, also consider accepting English subtitles we had submitted:
    1. It helps subtitle translators: TH-cam has an _autotranslate feature_ which makes it very easy to translate subtitles, see this image as an example: ibb.co/bX0SQKC (image shows how it works on another channel). This feature will not work unless u accept our English subtitle submission.
    2. TH-cam's sound recognition algorithm works like a charm, it only makes basic mistakes when it comes to English, we only proofread those English subtitles, and correct Turkish words (such as "Yılmaz")
    3. Many advanced English learners only need English subtitles.

As a woman its much more difficult and my wife often fights with them to be left alone 😊 I think its mainly due to the fact that most of them receive a commission from the things you are buying - they probably ask the cashier to write their code on your purchases. Dear Chelsea, my experience with shop assistants is the opposite. In most large stores, especially during busy hours, we cannot find anyone to help us. They are all busy rearranging the shelves and the customers are on their own to find the correct size or color.
    In some shops, let's say the upper 20% that sell more expensive goods, it is exactly as you describe. They are obviously receiving a commission on sales that they have helped. (Not sales in general) I agree it's a very bad idea.

    • @tatianag2768
      @tatianag2768 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the middle name is just a tradition. In my family we often use middle names to honor other family members like aunts or uncles or moms/dads. My middle name is Marie just because I guess my dad chose my first name and mom chose my middle name. The only other reason I can think of is to distinguish people with common first and last names.

    • @seaofroses8888
      @seaofroses8888 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the US it is often times useless and just there because the parents like the name. Other times it can be used if several people have the same name; however, most of the time pepple use nicknames. In Mexico however, some people with very common names Maria, Jose ECT. Will use their middle name as if it were their first name. For many years I though my friend's name was Guadalupe. It turned out to be Beatrice Guadalupe 😂
