As a member of a gaggle of little kids in the 60's; when my grandma told us to "go play in the freeway," after being annoying, we would only giggle and exit the house: And NOT play in the freeway!

I grew up in the 60s and 70s too. I really did play on the freeway- the 60 freeway through East L.A. went through right across the street from our house. When we played on it, it wasn’t open to traffic though.

The first great tragedy I experienced in life when I was around 5, was at a business next door to one of my dad's businesses. It was a large paper company that printed out receipt like stuff (I know because my sister and I would raid their trash can and get some of the stuff to play with). One day we were there and suddenly sirens from all over started showing up there ... cops, EMT's, fire department ... my dad finally, after some time, went over to see what was going on ... he came back and went into his office and called my mother ... he said a guy had taken the pressure end of a commercial air compressor and shoved it up another guys bum, as a joke, and let loose ... I don't think my dad knew I was listening, but I will never forget what he said next ... he said that the guy's intestines blew right out of his mouth ... my dad came out of his office and saw me ... he asked me if I heard that, and I said yes, and then he said, "Learn from it" and walked away ... we always had machinery and compressors and what have you ... I am 61 now, and still remember that every time I use an air compressor 😇

this is gruesome. and not uncommon, i've read such a story on the Darwin Award official website. that one happened in Hungary or Poland, a decade ago or so. i've had a colonoscopie. the operator inject air very cautiously via the rectum, so as the camera can progress and inspect the mucous membrane of the colon. this is VERY uncomfortable, you get cramps, as the colon struggles and wants to evacuate the air. nobody should force air to enter that exit point just for fun.

Aaah, yes, this would definitely make sense. I saw something similar happen in boot camp - no fatalities! - but a lot of males who couldn’t show weakness or be seen as a coward in front of the other male and female recruits jumped into the pool as required but sank like rocks or splashed around trying to stay above water. (There were pool safety people all over the place.) All of us were told beforehand that if we couldn’t swim or were possibly a weak swimmer to stand off to the side, that there is nothing wrong with not being able to and no one would be in trouble, that they’d have to take remedial swimming classes. Several females and a few males stood aside. Those males were also put in remedial swim classes. I should add there were a couple of females who did the same thing, and then there were a handful of each who got up on the platform and couldn’t jump, so they, too, were added to the classes. Years later, I asked the pool safety people how often do they see recruits take the plunge but can’t swim. They said “all the time.”
It is required that we all could float and swim from one end of the pool to the other to pass and to graduate from US Navy boot camp.

My husband drives large trucks for a living and accidentally killing someone is his *biggest* fear. He is an extremely careful driver but you can't control other people's reckless actions. He is currently driving a concrete truck and a few months ago another driver was involved in an accident that lead to someone's death. The driver was driving normally, doing his job, and someone ran a stop sign and drove directly into the side of his moving truck. Concrete trucks are LARGE and the person in the other vehicle died instantly. My husband had driven through that same intersection less than 10 minutes before the accident.

Apparently she was heading home from college for Christmas and fell asleep behind the wheel. My dad was absolutely devastated and it haunted him until his death. He was killed by a drunk driver when walking home about two weeks before Christmas. I have an irrational fear of car accidents now.

That's how Bruce Lee's son Brandon was killed. Onset for the movie the Crow, the prop gun was a functioning gun with blanks inserted but the barrel had a lead tip from an actual bullet stuck inside that no one had checked (evidently). And the prop director for the film had already gone home for the day but the cast & crew continued filming. And since blanks actually have projectiles, the force of the blank shot ejected the bullet nose like a regular gunshot anyway & shot him mortally, severing an artery of his. Contemporaries called it a freak accident, but to me it sounds like negligence, executive oversight, & lack of gun safety that all rolled up into a "freak accident"

My parents, truck drivers as am I, worked with a guy that watched a convertible full of drunk teens drive straight under his trailer, instantly decapitating them all. When emergency workers arrived, they found the guy frozen in place, clutch and brake pedals to the floor, hands locked to the steering wheel. They had to cut the wheel off to get him out of the truck. His brain instantly broke and he was institutionalized for the rest of his life.
When I first started driving truck, the owner's son, who ran the shop, would run short loads during busy times. When he was a kid, he was with his dad. His dad fell asleep behind the wheel while exceeding the speed limit greatly while he was in the sleeper. The truck hit a bridge and he was ejected through the windshield, coming within inches of going head first into concrete pillar, before the truck rolled over trapping his father. Both were seriously injured and almost died. Neither one ever exceeded 55 mph after that. Because they drove so slow, they stayed off the interstate as much possible, because it's just as dangerous to drive slow on fast roads as speeding. The kids at one of the local high schools had this "game" where they'd blow through the stop sign on a crossroad and try to pass as close as possible to the back of a passing semi. That day, they weren't expecting a truck doing exactly 55 and hit the trailer wheels at an estimated 65 mph. It knocked the wheels right out from under the trailer and the trailer dropped down onto the car. Luckily for them the load was relatively light and didn't completely crush the car. All four of them were seriously injured, but survived. His mom and sister took another semi out as the load needed to be transferred and his sister drove the tractor and him back. As far as I know, he still hasn't driven truck, and that was 21 years ago. So, his father's choice to push too hard almost cost them their lives, and the lives of four idiot teens almost 20 years later.

Third time, he could not stop, went slipping faster and faster and struggled to hold on to anything and then the stream cut out. With Fuji, its not one specific drop that killsyou, you just tumble down at increasing speeds and sharp rocks make it so that you will not survive. The video is still on youtube. He got warned by hundreds of viewers and two times by the almost-slips by the mountain itself. Soo many warnings, and he totallywould have pulled it off with spiked climbing shoes and an ice pick. Omg that last one! Almost the same thing happened to my mom before i was born. A guy on a motorcycle ran a red light, and she hit and killed him. It was entirely not her fault, but it still affects her over 40 years later.

I actually just saw a video recently of two fellas working in a factory in India. It starts with the older foreman using the air hose to tussle dudes hair and spray his face and what not. The younger guy turns around for a sec and the foreman blows air into a hole in the pants of the younger gentleman. The younger fella collapses almost immediately, turns out that the older guy had blown out a bunch of things somehow. They said when they tried to help in the hospital they were hampered by the fact that fecal matter was blown all over his organ. He did indeed die, but I never caught the place, just the video.

That rip current story gave me the heebie-jeebies. I live on the Pacific coast, and the undertow is crazy strong here thanks to barely any continental shelf. Every year, a lot of people get swept out and drown.
Remember kids: rip currents kill, not sharks!

True story. I managed a bar called The Castle Barge, (It's a converted grain barge on the river Trent, Newark) on a warm August (I think) Sunday night, a drunk guy proposed to his gf, she said 'if you swim across the river, I'll marry you......' You can guess what's coming.
When I got to work the following day at lunchtime, his body was being pulled out in a body bag on a stretcher opposite the pub.
A former Cricketer didn't technically commit suicide in the carpark outside, but when ending a shift at 2pm, empty bar, he came running down the stairs asking for an ambulance , ran out to see him vomiting what looked like coca cola. It was Paraquat. He died days later in QMC. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen.

Something like the last story happened to my dad back in the 80's. He was a truck driver, and one day a car swerved out in front of him and crashed into his truck so badly that it nearly tore the car in half, and wrote the truck off. Turns out the guy was drunk and was trying to end things, and my dad just happened to be the unwilling participant. My mom said that she saw the truck after the crash, and that my dad was lucky to have survived as it was a cab-over. It definitely took a toll on him though

Train drivers have been dealing with this almost since their have been trains. Some deal with it - some can never work again. It almost makes suicide booths look like a good idea.

I used to run an industrial pressure washer that could hit 6000 psi. Accidentally hit my foot while using the oscillating head (it spins and sprays a cone shape instead of 'flat blade'). Luckily i had boots on, but it damn near broke my foot. Not the same as air at 6000 psi, but moral of the story is dont stick the business end of any industrial pressure equipment near your body.

30 years ago when I was young and stupid and in my 20s, my friends and I jumped off a railroad bridge in California into a raging river of snow melt from the Sierra Nevada mountains in the middle of the summer. The first thing that happens is going from 100°F to the ice water takes your breath away. Then the raging river was so fast that just trying to swim to the Bank my sandals got sucked off and I never saw them again 😂 Once I finally made it to the bank of the river. I was so exhausted. I had to be dragged out of the river by two guys who just happened to be sitting there watching the stupidity. 😂

The indian air compressor one is real but happened differently and theres video of it. It was an employee that had walked up to his supervisor to ask him something and as he was walking away, the supervisor decided to mess with him... you can figure the rest of that part out. The supervisor skipped town and was later arrested. The employee did indeed die in hospital. So not a darwin award since the employee neither did it to himself nor planned on compressed air going into his arse.

British PSAs have nothing on Canadian ones. The “Canadian House Hippo” PSA is probably the easiest way to cause emotional damage to a little Kid.
While the *WarAmps* PSA’s were another level up, and also used catastrophic injuries suffered by 2-8yr old kids as their teaching tool.
My friend who literally lived in a US-Canadian Border town would always send us copies of their PSAs. Plus some of the British ones they also used (the car flipping into a groups of Grade 3 kids was horrifying)

I had my own Darwin Moment. When I was 7 or 8 I decided that it was a good idea to climb on top of a glass green house. You can guess what happened. I fell through the glass. When I came to in the hospital I found that I had a scar on my neck (15cm) and upper thigh (20cm). Almost 250 stitches in total. That cured me of doing stupid stunts... And being called Scarface thoughtout school reminded me of that day....

When I was 12 (I developed early), a 10 yr old boy tried to impress me with his “manhood”. Instead of stuffing his pants with socks, like the rest of the boys, he decided to use his Dad’s soccer ball pump to inflate himself. All it earned him was some screaming, a lot of pain and a trip to the doctor. He was fine, But the air compressor incident reminded me of this story. Thank God, he only had access to a pump!

On the playground back in the 90's/2000's, we played a game called Animal Crossing (no relation to THAT Animal Crossing). The idea was to run from one side of the swingset to the other without getting hit by the people on the swings. Amazingly, no one got injured.
As an adult, I was on a highway and saw some teens walking on the side of the road (we don't have sidewalks...). This one kid suddenly breaks from the group and dashes across the street. If I hadn't been keeping my eye on them.... If I hadn't slammed on my breaks when I did... I probably would have hit him. He just looks at my car and starts laughing and waving to his friends. If I hadn't been so shaken up, I probably would have tried to get out and slap him for pulling a stunt like that. I don't think any of them were filming. This was probably still before tik tok. Point is... I didn't even hit him and I was shaken up. I always feel bad for people who end up accidentally killing one of those idiots..
