  • Victoria Secret was basically founded because men felt awkward. This is that story, and how its kinda gone a bit adrift, but looks like it'll probably be okay. Maybe. Who knows. Watch the video.

    I can tell you when I stopped going to Victoria's Secret. I used to faithfully buy their "t-shirt bra," that looked smooth under a t-shirt and was also very comfortable. Well, they "redesigned" a product I already liked, which pissed me off. And for what they cost, the bras did not last very long. So, good-bye.

      They stopped sewing their bras and started GLUEING them. No joke. I compared a body bra from 5 years ago with an "identical" one from a year ago- the old one is sewn and the new one is glued along the edges. Ridiculous.

      @@krissydiggs I can tell you with 100% proof that VS bras are the same as others but cost more. My Mother-in-law used to work at a factory named Marion Rohr aka The Panty Shanty and she said there would be times when the underwear she was sewing was supposed to go to a store named JCPennys but VS wanted them so she had to take out the Pennys tag and put in the VS tag. Clothing size “standardization” or the lack thereof.

    • @---cr8nw
      @---cr8nw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, buy you can't pin that on one retailer. It's not like there is a standard size scale and VS just refuses to go by it. It's not standardized enough to know for certain that Target clothes will fit the same as Walmart clothes. In my opinion, VS is better in that regard than a lot of other retailers. Plus size women's stores usually develop their own size scales that are completely standalone, just to mess with women's psychology about body image.

    • @MildredCady
      @MildredCady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      -- Oh I agree. It’s across the industry (hence my “lack thereof” portion of the statement), and also more expensive brands will also have their own skewed system so more well off women will feel better because they’re in a “smaller size” than someone with a lower economic background.
      Yet for guys a 38” inch waist and 31” inseam with a 16.5” neck (numbers random) is consistent across brands.

    • @---cr8nw
      @---cr8nw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MildredCady, it's not quite that consistent for us, but at least the numbers mean something. A 40" waist might have different fits from brand to brand, but it's still (roughly) a 40" waist. It makes sense. Women's sizing doesn't make ANY sense. Honest question: what does size 0 actually mean?

    • @MildredCady
      @MildredCady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      -- Basically as vanity sizing skewed the industry more and more, there was a need to “add” more numbers at the bottom end so 0 and 00 (yes that exists) developed.
      As a rough estimate, a 2011 size 0 is equivalent to a 2001 size 2, and is larger than a 1970 size 6 or 1958 size 8.

    • @MildredCady
      @MildredCady 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you ever stopped to think what we have today that will be seen as ludicrous in another century or two? A lot of conceited modern people like to think we have the answers to a lot of things now, and any challenge is seen as not accepting science. But the reality is, understanding of science changes. I the 19th century, what they had was based on the science that they understood. In another century, we're going to look so ass-backward with people asking how the fuck we really mandated those injections or claimed that that plant is deadly or shot poison into bodies for cancer. The "best" we have today is only today. Advances will absolutely render what we have right now useless at some point.

      I remember when Sam Walton was still alive WalMart was known for its US produced products. They advertised and traded on it, prominently displaying the "Made in the USA" label and having commercials specifically telling people they should shop at walmart to support workers in the US. They also claimed to stock quality products. These days they are known for having nothing but cheap Chinese junk that easily breaks and you only buy because you're too poor to afford anything better. Sad, really.

    • @rifter0x0000

      Jody Owen When walmart employees unionize Walmart simply closes the store. They employ illegal tactics to suppress unions, such as forcing employees to be trained in anti-union propaganda which they are forced to watch, and encouraging employees to spy and report on any suspected union activity so they can be fired.
      If existing laws were enforced, these things might be curtailed. But given they blatantly get away with open sex discrimination, racism, and failure to pay employees for overtime among other things, I wouldn't hold my breath on that. As things are as well, almost no corporation is ever expected to respect union rights, and the actions of politicians are generally completely antagonistic to unions and any form of rights for workers - especially in the US.

    • @RyuuTenno
      @RyuuTenno 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Jody Owen I understand your question, and even the solution, but, the reasons behind why people work there is mixed. Minimum wage, until recently, has been pretty low, with the cost of living going up. Walmart entices people to work there by having higher than minimum pay rates, trying to be more attractive.
      Honestly, the retail aspect I'm not bothered by, but, the level of stupidity from virtually everyone from the CEO to the store managers is ridiculous. I currently work in Walmart myself, but, it's been draining, and unfortunately I'm in a spot that I can't go below what they're paying without severe money issues. And I'm currently at $11/hour (out in SC btw). And I don't even have that much in the way of bills either really, it's primarily my rent, and I'm in the lowest I can get before going into crappy neighborhoods.
      I believe someone mentioned that workers attempting to unionize does cause the store to become shut down. And that's 100% accurate, because one of my managers brought up how a couple stores in the region were shut down due to those reasons, but, officially, that wasn't what was reported. They said it was due to plumbing/sewer problems with one store, and remodeling for another.
      I personally, try to go for non-walmart brand goods when shopping there, and typically try to shop elsewhere, especially for food.
      As for the appropriate solutions, I've analyzed the entire system (or at least as much as I could from my position as a truck unloader), there's a ton of things that need to be done, not the least of which is to actually treat the workers with respect as a human being.
      You're not wrong about boycotting them, but, unfortunately it won't be as effective with a small percentage of people doing it. That being said, they've been trying to figure out why they're losing money and where, and haven't realized that fewer people are shopping there over time. One store near me used to have a completely full lot, but, now they're getting closer to about 50-60% of the lot filled with cars. And that full lot was only like, 5-10 years back.
      A lot of us actually don't expect Walmart to make it past another 20 years without problems with everything going on.
      However, some of the problems Walmart has, isn't just with them. They've got a poor scheduling system, among other things, that's being mimicked by other companies as well. And that's where regulations can actually help. Though, I'm not overly fond of regulations myself, there does need to be a minimal amount that keeps everything together without interrupting the economy.

      Overspend on frivolous nonsense, raise prices on things that are normally heavily discounted or even given away, turning down the volume on the slot machines, charging for parking and adding ridiculous mandatory resort fees along with other nickel and diming are just the obvious ones. There has been little to no serious development in utilising LEDs and other cool tech to light up entire buildings to entice visitors.
      Casinos aren't particularly unique or uncommon these days. Once you have been through a half a dozen or so, there is a pretty good chance you might forget which one you are in, even without being intoxicated. Steve Wynn was one of the last true geniuses and creative force in the industry. The rest are mostly just cookie cutter copycats. It doesn't help that 2 companies control about 2/3 of the Las Vegas strip, but fortunately, this is down from over 4/5 a year or so ago.
      I guess the best answer is yuppies with their corporate cost cutting and profit maximisation happened over the course of their "professional" careers, but the turnover is starting to show. Casinos are moving into a new fresh decade and era.

    I've actually defended the lack of size inclusivity in their runway shows. They don't make particularly large sizes, and they don't do a ton of products in the largest sizes in their range. If they included a broader range of women in their runway show it would look like they cater to everybody, when in reality they don't. They'd basically be advertising a product they don't make. That makes no sense.
    People have complained that they need to make more sizes, but even that's debatable. Making a wide variety of sizes is super expensive, particularly in bras. For every band size you add, you need to add multiple cup sizes. Essentially, for every size they add they're really adding at least four sizes (if not more) when you factor in different size cups. Assuming they carry this new size in ten different styles, that's forty new products. That's enormously expensive. That's a large part of why specialty bra sizes are so expensive. It's an extremely specialized product.
    I'm guessing that they've done their demographic research, and they're carrying the right range of sizes for their target customer. The problem here is that no one ever says that they've done their demographic research, and adding more sizes wouldn't be profitable for their brand. They always make the same mess that Abercrombie made and say stupid shit like, "We only want thin people wearing our clothes," or "Our brand is about fantasy." It doesn't make sense for every brand to carry every size. They need to consider who their target customer is, and focus on what they want. That's perfectly okay. However, brands need to learn a little bit of tact though and not dump on people who they don't particularly want to cater to. (Worse case scenario, why not just say, "It's something we're looking into" when asked a question about why you don't carry a certain product, or cater to a specific demographic?)

      @rifter0x0000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I quit eating there after the additive debacle. Why does bread supposedly baked fresh daily and immediately consumed need preservatives? The answer is that the bread, like everything else, is not fresh. Nothing is fresh despite the slogan and stores lack the ability to produce any of it fresh. The "grilled chicken" is made in a factory and contains very little actual chicken, plus it's not grilled.
      Jared was outed first as a liar after years of Subway advertising as a proper diet food. Then it turned out that not only was he a pedophile, the company knew it and continued to support him. They even went so far as to tell a franchisee who complained he was sexually harassed her 14 year old daughter she must continue working with him and giving him access. Her only recourse was to close her business, because they were forcing her to allow him around. They've never apologized for this or even acknowledged his crimes. It took federal prosecution to end his reign.
      I would have gone ahead and eaten their fake food, especially when I was poor and it was cheap (2 for one deals, $5 footlongs, etc.) but this behavior is beyond the pale. If any sub/sandwich shop is available in your area it will have better more natural food and generally decent prices without the apparent support for pedophilia and sexual harassment.

    I worked in the call center for the credit card company that managed Victoria's Secret store credit card (which is called the Angel Card.) While we managed many brands, the brand-specific training for Victoria's Secret was...interesting.
    For instance, we were very specifically told that we would frequently get wives trying to learn about charges on their husband's cards. That is a no-no for any credit card, but it is particularly troublesome for Victoria's Secret where men are often buying lingerie that their wives never see. We weren't even supposed to answer questions about statements when the wives had them in hand and were reading them to us.
    As you might imagine, that's the only customer service job I ever worked that trained me in how to deal with upset spouses and marital disputes.
    Essentially, all of the brand specific training assumed that the only people who would get an Angel Card were men who were buying gifts for women who were not their wives...and I can't say I ever had many experiences with Angel Card customers that suggested otherwise...

It has never been the dominant brand in his portfolio. The original owner who took $1 million for the chain of 6 stores committed suicide years afterward, reportedly because he lost the million on his next venture, but kept going into debt. Since everyone knew he was the Victoria Secret guy, as The Limited expanded the chain, everyone figured he was getting rich, while he was broke. The embarrassment of having sold out for only $1 million, losing that money, and watching the company become worth $7 billion, while failing at his next attempts at retail, was too much.

    The problem with the body positivity movement is that it isn't really geared towards making people of average size feel like it's ok to be of average size. It's geared towards making it seem like there's nothing wrong with obese and extremly overweight people. The problem is that this is demonstrably wrong. The chance of heart disease, liver disorders, etc, etc are all made much, much more likely from being excessively overweight. While I fully support the idea of not ostrasizing overweight people (I'd be screwed if we did), it should not be lauded or incouraged. Not to mention it's kinda very sexist. Sure someone like Tess might get lauded as being 'brave and beautiful', but I guarentee if I was parading myself around, like she does, in nothing but swim trunks the guys, and gals, would be telling me to cover up cause no one wants to see my rolls and man boobs on display like that.

    So, conversely, clothing stores that serve only larger women are a problem too? Should someone small like me demand a stores like Lane Bryant or Torrid sell my size? My point is, there are other places that sell larger sized lingerie, so larger women don’t HAVE to shop at VS, it’s not the only game in town. This is ridiculous.

    So. Don't know if this would work for this channel, but I have a suggestion.
    Back in the day my home town, which is now literally the middle of no where, was actually a huge booming place when people started colonizing Canada. Little place called Wiarton, and it was bigger than Toronto for a while there. For the time it was huge, but over time it suffered a number of losses that eventually resulted in it becoming the backwater it is today. The real nail in the coffin was sugar beets. A venture that, given a couple more years, could have made the area strike it rich.
    At the time there were issues with getting cane sugar, some war or another going on resulting in trade embargoes. So the demand for sugar was really high.
    At the time it was unusual for sugar to be made from beets rather than cane, but one man came along and sold most of the local farmers on the idea to give it a go. The locals invested a lot of their own money and crops into sugar beets. Unfortunately, the project didn't have the leadership necessary, and the first couple years were a complete failure, and the factory folded. Between that and how unfamiliar people were with the product, despite tasting the same as cane sugar, many people lost everything. They had all planted sugar beets that year expecting to be able to sell them to the factory now found they had a product worth almost nothing, and had barely enough set aside to feed themselves over the winter, much less pay off the loans many of them had put against their land to invest into the sugar beet factory in the fist place.
    The man who spearheaded the project rowed out into the middle of the lake and was never seen again.
    Less than a decade later, sugar from sugar beets took off. What crippled our town economically was making business boom elsewhere in the world.
    And now the town is most infamous for its extremely racist MP, who only this last year retired, and it's albino groundhog. There's a hand full of places that celebrate groundhog day, and we're one of them.

    The problem with any initially successful business is they often get too big for their egos.
    Instead of investing in the business and the products they produce they start chasing profits at the cost of the quality of the product and customer relations , They start taking huge salaries reduce quality and staff wages by any means then tell the customers to drop dead if they complain about the expensive drap they just bought failing on them.

    -Why do some malls stay alive when others are in hospice or completely dead?
    -History of the pool noodle.
    -Midwest towns that were damaged or destroyed because of closing/closed factories (seriously, huge subject...)
    -in the 1880’s many people bought stuff through catalogs (Sears, etc...seriously you could buy an entire house and assemble it). The American down town got rid of the need for that. Malls killed downtowns in the 70’s and 80’s, Superstores killed Malls in the 90’s-2000’s. Internet is killing superstores in 2010’s. We have gone full circle back to ordering things like in the 19th century as the norm...what will be the next thing? Will there be a new animal or will the internet come up with a new concept to replace how people buy things on line today?

    The Victoria's Secret catalog was free soft core that came in the mail without even asking for it.
    Just ask Al Bundy.
    Teenage boys were eager to check the mail while everybody else was still asleep.
    I did "fashion" photography for about a year, not to hustle clothing but for an artist (female) who just wanted to showcase the female form in a sexy, but non pornographic way. There was some lingerie, but I don't remember seeing "Victoria's Secret" on any labels. (Yes, I would have noticed.)
    In Elizabethtown, Ky there was a man named Victor who opened a lingerie shop called, "Victor's Little Secret." He got sued over the name.

    Problem with Victoria's Secret is I need those wings and they ain't selling 😔
    Edit: I only go to Victoria's Secret for panties and not much else. There are much better places to get awesome lingerie that's higher quality and less general in taste.

    one thing you forgot, V.S. used to have awesome service, the one at my mall was very welcoming. They were really good at making the guy not feel strange or like he's shopping for himself or a creep or whatever. You felt more like a normal everyday citizen looking for a night-night for his gurl.
    And one of the things that didnt help things was the shift girls had about how model bodies are not real, and photo fixing uping, eating disorders somehow got linked into the whole mess. To be honest it was actually harder for them to feel sexy back then, the bar was set pretty high, unrealistically high.

    I never shopped at Victoria Secret, even during it's hay day. There's something to be said for having attractive underwear for yourself. It makes you feel pretty and confident. But that also means it's going to be your everyday stuff. It's got to be comfortable, durable, and have a solid cost to wear ratio, and it needs to hide under most clothing, before it ever thinks about being eye-catching. Victoria Secret was always too expensive and too poorly made, and on top of that, it didn't have a wide enough range of sizes. If I want to knock ny boyfriend's eyes out, I'm going to buy sexy costume underwear for cheap and do a quick change in the bathroom.

    My favorite things at VS were always the clothing and the pajamas. They had some really cute sweaters, jeans, and boots. I think their brand was called, MODA International? Then they started cheaping out on the quality, and that was the end. :-(
