    Recently had an "issue" with a local business that turned into me pressing charges on them. They tried to sue me because they broke the law. (makes as much sense to you as it does to me) They failed miserably, made fools of themselves in court, but best of all, I got the whole office's mug shots and now those are proudly displayed whenever you google the name of the business on their google review.
    I'm no marketing wizard, but I feel like that isn't a great thing to have when you run a service business...

      I would love to provide a link but one lawsuit is still pending and I need to wait until that is finished to say everything. The review that is there now is sort of a rough draft with a vague explanation of why there are mugshots, I'll have to edit it later.
      In North Carolina, we have the ability to press charges privately. It's like a lawsuit, but, instead of money, they issue an arrest warrant for the other party. This business trespassed on my property and attempted to steal something, got ran off under threat of death, and then, showed up again 2 days later. They had no legal authority to do what they were doing, but seemed to think they did. (even after the police explained otherwise)
      Eventually, the employees that came to my house were arrested for trespassing and attempted theft, 3 of them, and then, the office manager who sent them got arrested too!
      In a lawsuit that has already been thrown out, they tried to sue me for threatening to shoot them. I told the judge yes, I absolutely said that, and I would have if they didn't leave. (We have very strong property rights in this state) The judge agreed it was reasonable under the circumstances.
      Bottom line is they are just extremely dumb hicks from a very rural place. There is literally no other explanation besides absolute and complete lack of brainpower. They're like the Florida man that calls the cops because he didn't get his drugs.
      I gotta say it was both a very nice and very weird feeling to have the cops be entirely on my side...usually it doesn't work like that. :)

Sadly this includes criminal charges brought against you due to mistaken identity, and to my knowledge there is nothing you can do about it...

    Unfortunately, where I live in Southern California, it seems there is just not enough police to deal with dickheads with super-dark window tints.
    And, without fail, nearly every vehicle I see with super-dark tints is driving like a dickhead. I'm fairly certain plenty of them are criminals too, what with all the idiotic street racing and gang activity around here.

    • @zeke7515
      @zeke7515 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tints are usually secondary offenses in most states (not sure which ones are primary but a Google could probably provide it). This means the police need a primary reason (taillight out etc...) to pull someone over before they can tack on the secondary offense.

    • @kimirikscreations
      @kimirikscreations 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Understood - I just wish the police would pull over the ultra dark tint cars for the primary offenses of speeding, reckless driving, running red lights, etc, that they are usually doing here.

    With a crowbar its pretty trivial to snap open a fuel door. Not many people have locking caps and even those are not difficult to overcome. I can 100% confirm that siphoning gas IS a common crime, especially as gas prices rise, even in major US and Canadian cities. It happens way more than you'd think.

    Regarding siphoning fuel, ABSOLUTELY still a thing and a chronic problem where I live. They pry the fuel door open, which scratches up your paint job. After my husband had his fuel siphoned twice in just a few months, he got a locking gas cap. Sure, the fuel door gets busted and paint scratched, but they can't get that outrageously expensive gas.
    They usually target carparks. Although these have cameras, no one really actually monitors them. Around here, parking in downtown is super expensive, so it's cheaper (and quicker given traffic and the time to find a parking space three blocks away from your intended location) to park free in a carpark and take the train into the city. However, parking garages are also a target for fuel siphoners. My best friend is a nurse and had her car's gas siphoned while it was parked in the hospital employee lot. Imagine the sort of scum who steals gas from a lady who just spent a 16 hour shift doing chest compressions, puked on by 5 different patients, helped put pressure on a gunshot wound and ended up head-to-toe in blood, and had to hold the hand of an elderly dying patient, she just wants to get home to her kids and wash away the sweat, blood, and pee smell that lingers despite hospital showers, only to find her car out of gas.

    As to the license plates, the craziest thing was happening for a long time here. People were fed-up with getting caught by speed cameras, and someone figured out that the fine for having no plate was far cheaper, and didn't cost points on your license either (neither do speed cameras, but most in-person fines do cost points on your license). So every 3rd or 4th car you'd see on the street would have no license plates. When pulled over, they would just claim it must have been stolen and they didn't notice, and pay the small fine.
    Took several years for the police to convince the provincial government to up the fine for not having a license plate displayed...

      My parents were on a bus trip last weekend. They bareky made it home because someone siphoned fuel from the bus the last night on the trip, emptying one of the tanks.
      My parents think they might bve jinxed as they were on another bus trip on the continent a couple of weeks prior. That bus driver misread the GPS and they ended up on some extremely narrow mountain road where it was so tight that they hit a cliff and busted several windows.
      It was a little less dramatic on another bus trip they did this Spring (they've gone on lots of trips after the pandemic) to the Netherlands. The guide had misread the map and they were stuck in some mudfield for five hours and missed that days event. Luckily they are retired and thought the mudfield was quite exciting.

    The reason for those pesky statutes of limitations is that we can't be sure we only convict people who aren't innocent with evidence that is collected within months, let alone decades later. The limitation is used to check the power of law enforcement from harassing and persecuting innocent people forever just because they "think" they might be guilty.
