  • In this episode of composing for the piano we talk about writing in a late Romantic style. We take the music matters theme and arrange it into a late Romantic style, discussing music composition techniques and tips when composing for the piano in a romantic style. The video demonstrates how to take a musical idea written in one style and present it in a totally different style. To make the stylistic change effective we make alterations to the rhythm, to the texture, and to the harmony, to create a sound that draws on the late Romantic style and showing how to use the piano in a suitably idiomatic way. Useful for composers, arrangers and performers alike.

    I just want to make an observation: the E dim 7th chord on the fourth pulse (1st measure) needs a becuadro (♮) on the E note, left hand.

    Hello again! I have to say thanks for all the simple guides you have given us musicians. I believe you have the capability of growing your channel even more! I have watched most of your videos on composition, and I'm quite interested in composing a Sonata or a piece on Rondeau (Rondo) Form. I have studied the rondo form structure, but not quite sure how do I compose a piece of music with just the structure ABABC. I hope you could help me with that. Thank you.

    Do you have a course that goes more in depth into writing in this style (and other "classical" music styles)? Or are these just individual youtube videos? I would be interested in buying a course that would go more in depth into writing in these styles (especially romantic and late romantic era)

      Music Matters thank you. I did look over the selection of courses, and couldn’t find a specific course that directly talked about this. From your opinion, which course would most closely align (advanced music theory course, the composition course, or one of the webinar courses?). Thank you for your patience!

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends exactly what you’re looking for. The Baroque webinar series gets into Baroque style, including some Baroque compositional techniques. The Advanced Theory course includes writing in Baroque style and Classical/Romantic piano style. The Counterpoint course covers Baroque Counterpoint techniques.

    Are not different melodies characteristic of different periods?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. See our video on style and period recognition.

    • @edwardmirza
      @edwardmirza 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your reply. What I’m really trying to solve is a way of schematising which harmonic and chord progressions, and key modulations, may be said to be typically characteristic of the Early, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic and perhaps the modern period one by one.

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m not sure it works as neatly as that. One can say that 1c V 1 or ll7b V l are typical Baroque procedures or that lc V happens at plenty of Classical cadential points or that Liszt often strings Diminished 7ths together but beyond those kind of general observations all you can do is to look at the hallmarks of individual composers.
