I've been playing piano for almost 30 years and I find your lessons very helpful. Until recently, I've been playing by memory, trial and error, and exploiting mistakes that become desirable to be implemented. I didn't even know how to read or write music for decades. My grandmother played piano for her local Baptist church and I used to watch her play for hours. I can honestly say it was my grandma, whom instilled the fervent passion for music.
Anyways, I've uploaded some of my compositions to my channel. I don't play by any sort of script or musical score. Oft times, I am making split second decisions in amidst the song, sometimes straying off into directions that I never intended to go. Oddly enough, sometimes this works rather well. And if I make a mistake, keep playing and look for opportunities to implement that same mistake further down in the composition; perhaps even transposing that mistake into another key signature. In doing so, I've feigned mistakes as part of the composition. The absolute worse thing to do is become discouraged and stop playing altogether. Let us not be discouraged by our errors, for they are an excellent learning tool.

Brian, you HAVE found the greatest - I feel the exact same way!! Two or three weeks ago I took the plunge and bought the formal Music Matters Theory Courses Set 1-8. Am about half way through it now. It is SOOO in depth - and yet so easy to follow and learn. Logical, brilliant, fun. Best investment I've made in years. I watched this video a few months ago when I needed help with counterpoint writing, and I am happy to say it helped very much :D
However, having forgotten I had watched this video, I came up with a melody exactly the same as yours, only starting on C. I have now written and composed a decent, but short fugue. After I listened to it for a few times, I was convinced I had heard the fugue subject somewhere else before. And here I am, hy head in my hands, wondering if I will have to be a cover musician...
(Note that, I have tried to write many different fugue subjects, but all were either too complicated, unusable, or already existed)
Anyways, thank your the help and inspiration you have given me!

You're doing a GREAT job in this video. You're clearly indicating what counterpoint is and how it can be achieved. I personally like to think in terms of writing a long, sectional, melodic phrase with a homophonic harmonic structure (which basically just means a homophonic tune), and then writing what I call a "non-comping-based background line" (which allows harmonic tensions) that mimics the melody as the melody unfolds (in whatever way desired), and remains in line with the homophonic harmonic structure. If the counterpoint is to be three voices instead of two, then I likely would use a "two-voice harmonizing pair" with the melody to achieve complete harmony for each and every melody note and simply reposition subphrases of the melody such that the subphrases pop up in different voices, being certain to modify the two-voice harmonizing pair as necessary should any voicing problems arise as a result of repositioning. Harmonizing in this way automatically forces the creation of background melodies to counter the point without mimicking, while repositioning subphrases provides an effect similar to mimicking. For four voices, the two-voice harmonizing pair and the non-comping-based background line would both be used simultaneously. For five voices, I'd likely bring in a second non-comping-based background line. (It's pointless to go beyond five voices, as independence of the voices will then diminish too much.) Generally speaking, the rules of good voice leading for the achievement of independence of the voices will always be followed between the melody and every other voice involved, and between the two voices of the two-voice harmonizing pair. That way, there will always be a satisfying balance or compromise between the having of independence of the voices and the having of good musical interest in the background lines.

I think the penultimate note of measure 3, upper voice might better prepare the E on the downbeat of bar 4 if it were an F. By no means anything more than a hunch. What you've done here is quite nice. The vertical interval of the diminished fifth is 2-part counterpoint's ideal expression of V7 in first inversion, especially because of its ability to resolve by step in opposite direction.

Simply Superb!! I'm amazed at how you build up this piece without having to sit at the piano working everything out. I'm wondering whether you hear the music in your head as you're writing, or are you creating the piece based purely upon knowing what tools to use when - ie, adding rhythmic variety, or following harmonic or melodic rules such as "we've moved by steps so now perhaps some skips would spice things up"? In other words, do you hear this music as you write it, or are you working purely from knowledge of what tools to use when? Hope that makes sense! Thank you again, you are beyond amazing.

Very interesting. I am watching many of your videos and I find them very easy to understand compared to videos by others on similar subjects. I am mathematically minded and your presentations work very well for my mind. Many years ago, when I knew only some rudimentary parts of music theory I wrote a computer program that generates its own music. It was one of the most inspiring and fun projects I have ever done. I am now thinking of picking up that idea again, but this time with a deeper understanding of music theory and theory of composing, where your teachings will be an important influence. I play some instruments since I was a child and I like to improvise a lot.

@@MusicMattersGB Thank you. I just got an idea for a subject you might be interested in making videos on. You have shown various ways to think when one composes a song, but what about making some videos about analysing existing known songs and show what it is in them that make them work so to say. Or perhaps you have already done this?

Ib means chord l in first inversion ie the 3rdof the chord is in the bass. Ic would means second inversion ie the 5th of the chord is in the bass. Ia is root position ie with the root of the chord in the bass. Have a look at the Advanced Theory Online Course at www.mmcourses.co.uk where it’s all fully explained.

This aspect of music has been missing from a lot of music education for years and I can't understand why. Counterpoint is one of the most interesting music theory tools and makes the music much more multi dimensional and capable of sustaining interest over repeated listenings. It doesn't just have to be in Baroque style either - listen to the Beach Boys.

The "point" in counterpoint refers to a note and not a motif like you suggest. It comes from the latin "punctus contra punctum" -"point against point" or "note against note".
