  • In this episode of composing for the piano we talk about writing in a classical style. We take the music matters theme and arrange it into a classical style, discussing music composition techniques and tips when composing for the piano in a classical style. This video explains some key features of Classical style, such as Alberti Bass, the use of Classical ornamentation, and approach to harmonic rhythm and texture. There is also advice on the use of chords such as why it is a good idea to use diminished chords in first inversion. Full of advice for composers wanting to write in the Classical style and for musicians wanting to understand Classical style, as well as demonstrating how a theme written in one style can be presented in another style.

    delightful episode. one of my favorite exercises in 2nd year composition (in college) was taking a theme and arranging it for different musical periods.

    Hi sir, I appreciate your work so much. Thanks for your effort to make music learning easier. Also can I ask about composing for string quartet. What are the important things to keep in mind when writing for string quartet?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hi. Thanks for your positive comment. In terms of writing for String Quarter, the same principles of harmony apply. In addition, use the texture well ie vary it in terms of number of players performing at any one time, antiphonal effects between pairs of players, homophonic/ polyphonic textures etc. Also write idiomatically for the instruments. If you want help with the later have a look at the Music Matters Orchestration for Strings Course.

    So, classical music cannot be complicated and it gotta be simple?
    Sorry for my bad English

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Classical period music (1750-1820) has a simplicity of harmony and texture.
