do you have a video explaining why melodies may begin on non-root notes & why a particular one may be chosen over the other? I know if every song started on the root, things would be very boring, but I'm asking more along of the lines of why a writer thinks "Im going to begin on the 3rd here" & what the effect would be or how it would dictate the line going forward, rather than beginning on the 5th or other any other tone. thanks
There are no particular rules surrounding that - it’s more about what suits a song best. If, for example the second syllable of the song is more important than the first you might decide not to begin on the tonic because that would add significance to the first note.
Your lessons are so wonderfully clear and approachable! A question: do passing, auxiliary, and anticipatory notes comprise the bulk or even the entire sum of inessential notes? Many songs I enjoy often do something fancy at the end of a bar smoothly walking up/down a scale to avoid what would otherwise be a massive leap, like perhaps from G all the way up to E in the next octave. Many of those ascending notes in between don't appear to be essential notes at least if I think in terms of diatonic triads. Perhaps they're using extended chords like sevenths and ninths? In that case, if I revisit them, perhaps half of those notes are passing notes.
There are other inessential notes, there are suspensions, there are extended chords, there are chromatic notes… So there are various ways in which you can elaborate a melody - it’s what makes it all so interesting.
@@MusicMattersGB Unfortunately also a bit overwhelming to me as a neophyte! :-D Yet your wonderful lessons are helping to make things click to me -- I get so many eureka moments following your lessons. Thanks very much!

How can i create rythms with left hand while playing melody with right hand ? I am struggling to get it and i learn piano from your videos so please do a video for it.
I'm curious how did john lennon use chords and melodies ? I'd love to here a in depth study . How he used passing notes , auxiliary notes a anticipatory notes. I love his connection of chords and melodies.
Hi, this is great. A very informative and interesting topic thanks. I'm wondering, could you please do a feature on the Modes perhaps? Both what they are and how to apply them in composition. Just asking.
great great video!! i learned so much. now, can you do a video going the opposite direction? taking a melody and writing chord based on your melody notes?
You could've used the B flat with F major if you resolved it to to either the A or C depending on context and thematic elements of your song and it would've sounded quite lovely

Thanks. Appoggiaturas are not the same as anticipatory notes. Appoggiaturas are ‘leaning notes’ that come on a beat and are dissonant but then resolve by step on to a note that is consonant with the chord. Anticipatory notes may or may not appear on a beat but they simply anticipate the next note. Hope that makes sense. This piece sounds so nice at the end! For me, composition has always been something tantalizing. Thank you very much for the explanation! But why in the first place you put the chords F-Dm-Gm-C-F in a row?
Thank you. It’s a chord progression that works well. The first job is to find chords that fit. The second is to settle on chord progressions that sound good. I sort of reverse engineer this process to get songs by ear. Get the chords down first to get a logical assortment of notes most likely used in a phrase and then choose those that match the tune either while listening to it or playing it in your head. The rhythm usually is not a problem. Great fun and cheaper than buying sheet music.

do you have a video explaining why melodies may begin on non-root notes & why a particular one may be chosen over the other? I know if every song started on the root, things would be very boring, but I'm asking more along of the lines of why a writer thinks "Im going to begin on the 3rd here" & what the effect would be or how it would dictate the line going forward, rather than beginning on the 5th or other any other tone. thanks
There are no particular rules surrounding that - it’s more about what suits a song best. If, for example the second syllable of the song is more important than the first you might decide not to begin on the tonic because that would add significance to the first note.
all your contents are amazing! thank you for making these videos :)
It’s a pleasure

I enjoyed your lecture. Please I have an upcoming music competition that requires us to sing with already made beats. But my problem is that I don't know how to make a good Melody for each of the beats. Please I need your help in this. I don't know if I should send you the beats to analyze??.

I'm curious how did john lennon use chords and melodies ? I'd love to here a in depth study . How he used passing notes , auxiliary notes a anticipatory notes. I love his connection of chords and melodies.

Hi! My question is: can we start on an auxiliary note and then move to a note that belongs to the chord or it's necessary to start on a harmonic note?
It’s usually better to start on a harmony note.
Hi, this is great. A very informative and interesting topic thanks. I'm wondering, could you please do a feature on the Modes perhaps? Both what they are and how to apply them in composition. Just asking.
Hi. We’ve done a video on modes that you can find on TH-cam but we can certainly return to the topic.
great great video!! i learned so much. now, can you do a video going the opposite direction? taking a melody and writing chord based on your melody notes?
We’ve done this and there’s much more to come.
Music Matters oh very cool, thanks
You could've used the B flat with F major if you resolved it to to either the A or C depending on context and thematic elements of your song and it would've sounded quite lovely
There are certainly many possibilities.
This lesson also help us for better improvisation and instant melody making with any instrument

nice video..i have question please?..is anticipating notes the same appoggiaturas? thanku
Thank you so much! I usually don't like making a song entirely from a chord scheme, it feels soulless to me, but it can be a good way to start a melody and get an idea. Thanks!

Excellent
