Hi Thomas, it has been a few years since you posted this video. Many of the Whey Protein powder companies ON and Dymatize ect are adding Sucralose to their Protein Powder. I have a Ketogenic Smoothie made from scratch, for breakfast each morning which I add Whey Protein too. Finally he explained in detail how I might extract ink using lampblack soot and aqueus binders, which he helped me to apply to the paper in the form of a map to the grocery store.
Erythritol is what helped me stick with the Keto diet, I've got a sweet tooth and it taste to me more like sugar than any of the other sweeteners and it don't make me feel sick or give me an upset stomach.

The ingredients are just water, flavoring (vanilla), and sucralose, so no maltodextrin or anything.

Thank you! Those of us with hypoglycemia have trouble with honey and agave; monkfruit has been a miracle find! Just a note with Erythritol --- if corn is used to make it (for feeding the yeast), make sure it's labeled non-GMO, if not, it is what it eats :) (ref: Dr. Berg)
I am so impressed with your knowledge and the way you explain these subjects so that those of us who are pretty overwhelmed at all of the science involved in low carb/keto eating, can understand and comprehend what we need to succeed. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Seriously. I searched YT with sucralose and it comes back with TDL. So many health searches come back with TDL videos. One of the main guys that helped me lose 180lbs and maintain. Just over 2 years and I know I never have to balloon up again with the likes of TDL teaching me how "foods" affect me! Thanks Thomas!
Glycerol is actually a component of MCT, as is evident in the name: Medium Chain Triglyceride. With MCT, we always focus on the medium chain fats, but neglect the glycerol component. As the name implies, each MCT macromolecule is composed of three molecules of medium chain fats bound together by one molecule of glycerol. So, when we take MCT, we are *always* getting glycerol with it, though it's a small amount compared to what we'd typically use in the form of pure glycerin.
ive thought about that. a whole keto restaurant... feel like it would be ridiculously expenisve. fathead pizzas, shirataki noodles, keto cheesecake, chocolates... could be done i guess
Great video. Just a note: mogrosides in monk fruit stimulates insulin product in the pancreas so it does spike insulin. Compared to sugar though it is lower. It might be ok on keto but not on fasting. Erythritol can cause liver enzyme irregularities and increase fat in the belly area for some people. My friend was taking it and he had to stop because his LFTs went high. Other women experience a fat gut from it
@@Silverdudespolicyit’s so frustrating, I think maybe keto cycling might be something to look into- do keto on weekdays and weekends eat “normally” and you can have some real coconut sugar. Better than any of the substitutes and I’ve tried them all 😭😭

This is an old comment, bit it highlights an issue every M.D. or doctor in training faces. We simply do not learn this information in medical school. I hated my second year nutrition course, because it was packed with outdated information. I was screaming inside of my head that I had NO plans of teaching patients any of the information presented. Furthermore, medical school is so rigorous that nutrition courses are truncated in order to allocate more time to subjects like pathology and pathophysiology. This poses a huge issue if we want to get serious about primary prevention. Many diseases of lifestyle are linked to nutritional issues. By the way, I am also a biomedical scientist. 🙂
I don't use any sugar. Had diabetes type 2 for 12 years . Went on a low carb high fat journey and in 7 weeks I could stop taking my medication . Diabetes and high blood pressure. No .. no sugar or diet coke for me . Water , thee or coffee for me .
Good for you!! While I didn't have diabetes for 12 years, I did have it for one year. Fully expected, as I had been 150 pounds overweight for like 25 years. Also had high blood pressure and high cholesterol--the triple crown of issues leading to heart disease and death! Anyway, after only ONE WEEK on keto, my blood sugars were down to normal, unmedicated. I have dropped 10 pounds a month without changing my ultra-sedentary lifestyle the least little bit. I am NEVER hungry. In fact, I sometimes forget to eat--exact opposite of my foodaholic eating habits before. But trust me, I do eat plenty! Interesting side benefits: My awful reflux/heartburn just stopped on DAY ONE--so not a benefit of weight loss, but a benefit of the diet. Also, no more gas. Seriously. Not to be too blunt, but I don't think I've passed wind even once since starting keto. Big change there. Also, no abdominal discomfort at all or irregularity--also a big change from my lifelong status. After 4 months, my blood pressure is back into normal range, so no more BP meds for me! Cholesterol panel is awesome too, with my ratio (big heart disease indicator) in the "best" category. Keto is a miracle, pure and simple.
For Stevia if you want to use the non-liquid form/powdery form, please purchase the Sweat Leaf brand because it doesn't have the maltodextrin as mentioned by Thomas.
I’ve read stuff about how just smelling food will trigger responses in the body. There might be some insulin effect but probably not big. The studies on artificial sweeteners generally not found much blood sugar impact even in diabetics. In theory, if your insulin spike without the sugar that might cause your blood sugar to get dangerously low but that doesn’t seem to happen.
I just discovered your channel its pure GOLD. the amount of info, the simplicity, and usefulness. Would you do a video on Xylitol, Sorbitol, Acesulfame K, Sodium Cicclamate?
My thoughts exactly! I often see Acesulfame K in my protein supplement products, really curious as to how it effects blood glucose. Seen some pretty contradictory info so not quite sure what to think.
Thomas De Lauer is one of about 8 advisors/doctors that I follow. His videos have really helped me to improve my menu. I no longer refer to my Keto method as a diet. It is a lifestyle and a menu. No dieting involved.
Found out early in my keto journey that Splenda directly increased the occurrence & severity of my migraines...i have had severe chronic migraines since 2nd grade, but got rid of 95% of them by changing my diet. Thank you Thomas! 💚
Interesting. I abused aspartame in my teens and almost 30 years later it still gives me migraines... And yes this happens even if I didn't know ahead of time that the product contained aspartame.
The both of you should actually watch this video- th-cam.com/video/Mf82FfX-wuU/w-d-xo.html It’s about how there is no scientific proof that Sucralose does anything bad to your body - you just pee it out. It gives a temporary sweet taste to the taste buds and then is not absorbed in the body at all. You just pee it out - this is why it was no calories, does NOT affect insulin or blood or blood sugars and is what is recommended for diabetics. Please don’t listen to this guy - it isn’t even strong enough to affect your gut biome at all - your gut biome doesn’t recognize Sucralose as food or anything really. Watch the video I linked and stop blaming Sucralose for your migraines it’s the same as saying water causes migraines. It just doesn’t
Thomas, thank you for the disambiguation around sucralose! It's complicated since it is usually available in packets with maltodextrin, but pure liquid sucralose, without the binders, doesn't trigger an insulin response. Yeah, it's not great for the gut biome, but if you use it sparingly, it's totally fine on keto.
I was using organic sucralose with no maltodextrin and no issues with gut or anything else, but the fact it could deplete my good bacteria, I just bought monkfruit. Thank you
Thanks Thomas, you explained why my using a 1/4 to 1/2 or even a full teaspoon of monk fruit/Erythritol in my coffee in the morning makes it actually BETTER than a full teaspoon of sugar!! I actually taste the coffee instead of sugar and not any bitterness, which is why I liked to sweeten the coffee....but now I realize that coffee flavor is hidden with the sugar!! Now I enjoy a just a nice strong mild taste. Even if I wasn't doing any dieting, it is far superior to regular old, refined sugar
Thomas, as always, this was such an informative video and I thank you for putting in all the hard work in producing it. The only thing I would add is that, since many overweight and formerly overweight people find sweet foods addictive, I would recommend those people to avoid all sweeteners - even those that don't provoke an insulin/blood sugar response. After all, the overweight or formerly overweight person has to be honest with themselves and ask the question: "If I could eat sweet foods in moderation, would I have ever gotten overweight in the first place?" The truth is that for many overweight or formerly overweight people, sweeteners of any kind trigger a compulsive behavior that engenders over consumption of not only other sweet foods, but of other high carb foods in general. For people with that addictive predisposition - and I am one of those people - the only solution is complete abstinence from all sweet foods or sweet additives, regardless of whether they knock you out of ketosis.
Ship Creek I do not have a strong addiction to sugary tastes, almost the opposite, they taste oddly bitter to me sometimes. (Wacky taste buds) BUT that said, *some* sweet tastes can get so yummy to me I find myself overindulging in my keto fat bombs. I hate that feeling of being controlled by my taste buds. I will change gears and almost force myself ( not that it is hard to do btw) to enjoy a baker's chocolate treat (unsweetened, with some pink salt on it). Removes that sugar (even a sugar substitute) desire. A salty fatty steak will do it too. I've read that craving sugar actually means your body is craving protein. Whether that is accurate or not, if I ever feel hunger, which is rare on keto for me, I will know that it's breakfast time and immediately have some sardines or a burger, LOL😃
Unbelievable amount of information presented clearly and so valuable that I took a screenshot of your whiteboard for future reference. Thanks for all that you do for us Ketofreaks!

Switching to monk fruit was probably one of the best things I could have done. I was drinking like 25 grams of regular sugar in a cup of coffee (16oz mug). Times 2 if I drank multiple cups. I immedatly lost weight simply from switching to monk fruit in my coffee instead of sugar. Plus it tastes like real sugar imo. Once I combined that with diet and exercise, I'm in the best shape of my life.
Oh my gosh, thank you Thomas! I didn't realize that my Stevia, powdered Stevia in the raw, contained dextrose! This whole time I thought it was just Stevia until I saw this video and at the end, you mentioned the powdered vs the liquid. Great video, well done. Thank you.
My friends only buy Pure Stevia from Peru for that reason. I looked at the bottle, and Googled "Pure Stevia from Peru" White bottle, green label. Bolivian Stevia from Peru. Great stevia. Only one used in this house. American Stevia's can have hidden ingredients

Thanks for the discount. I am a HUGE fan and user of Lakanto's Monk fruit sweeteners. If not for them I am not sure I would have survived my first month on Keto.
Noticed my Body Armor Lyte (which is awesome btw) is sweetened with erythritol. So I looked into it and its pretty cool stuff. The whole reason sugar alcohols cause digestive issues is because your body cant break them down. So when they get caught in your colon they cause problems. But erythritol bypasses your colon by being absorbed into your blood and excreted through your urine unchanged. And actually may help improve the function of your blood vessels and reduce risk of heart disease. Also tastes more like sugar than any other sweetener I've had without being overly sweet. Im actually not a fan of really sweet stuff anyway so this stuff is perfect.
Might be perhaps worth letting people know that HFCS in Europe is called glucose syrup instead? It's not used too often however it did surprise me to see that here. The UK massively subsidises dairy, and the US massively subsidises corn, which explains why we have nicer chocolates with less things containing glucose syrup / HFCS
The only one that works with my brain, literally as a migraine with aura sufferer, is munk fruit. I would like to see this topic revisited considering what is now known about the serious health implications of over-consumption or long-term consumption of glycerol, aspartame and sucralose. I also feel maltose and malt extract should be included for scrutiny as I'm seeing them used in products a lot as a sweetener these days.

@Keri Manuel That would depend on what you're trying to make. If I were using it to make a glaze or something like that, I would add hot water slowly to my monk fruit powdered sweetener until it was the right consistency & the powder was dissolved & use that. I would subtract the amount of water I used to get that consistency from the other liquids in my recipe if it was a substantial amount. A teaspoon or two isn't going to disrupt most recipes but it depends on what you're trying to make. It's going to add a different flavor profile so you might want to play around with it & see what suits you. 😊
@@alaia-awakened Agriculture is destroying the planet. It is very frustrating how much misinformation there is on this topic. Grazing can actually sequester far more carbon than forests at a much, much faster rate. If we grazed animals on a large enough scale, we could actually mitigate all human emissions. Growing plants can not do this. Plant agriculture uses massive amounts of fossil fuels and unlike grazing cattle, it doesn't mitigate its own emissions. The soil microbiome is killed with chemicals and that dead soil is lost rapidly, causing complete land infertility and desertification. Grazing animals is the fastest way to replenish these lands, bring the microbes back, give nutrients back, rehydrate, break up impaction, and build soil faster than any other process. It would take nature decades to build the amount of soil made in a couple of yrs of Grazing.

All the 'keto friendly' syrups are made up of sweeteners that increase blood sugar (Such as Sorbitol or IMO). I guess I'll just have to give them up. Here is a new sweeter to replace sugar and its called Allulose. A company called G Huges puts it in one of his sauces. He uses different sweeters including Stevia. His three products on the market right now is BBQ sauce, Teriyaki sauce and Ketchup. I found it in my local Family Fare Store.
I really appreciate your comparison of all these sweeteners and am pleased that I've made the right choices so far. You didn't mention Bocha Sweet which I recently discovered and so far I'm loving it. To me it tastes exactly like sugar in every way. So I'm curious what your take is on this sweetener since it might not have been around at the time this video was made 4 years ago.
As a type2 diabetic, the only ones that dont spike my blood sugar numbers are monkfruit, stevia and erithritol. Unfortunately, when i use the monkfruit and erithritol they upset my guts. Stevia is the only one that works for me.
Hi Thomas, this is a great break down on natural/ artificial sugars. Can you expand on Allulose? I've been using it to bake egg white bread, and add it to some of my shakes. I did a quick research and found that it can upset digestion in some people. Thank you so much for providing us with in-depth info on so many health related topics.
from some of these sweeteners i get intense food cravings very fast. if i then eat something i don't get a good satiety feeling. i notice that my belly is bursting full and the satiety is not there. on the other side it does not eliminate my thirst like pure water, or water with ACV or sodium bicarbonate.

Other women experience a fat gut from it
So anything sweet is a no go 😭

Good for you. But those keto foods are nasty and need help

Some doctors and scientists say that as soon as a sweetener touches your tongue, small amounts of insulin gets released. I'd like to see more on that.
Watch Dr berg videos
I think Acesulfame K is the same as Sucralose…….chlorinated sugar.
I just watched this clip, and was surprised that Xylitol, didn’t make the list. Xylitol with birch.
Thomas De Lauer is one of about 8 advisors/doctors that I follow. His videos have really helped me to improve my menu. I no longer refer to my Keto method as a diet. It is a lifestyle and a menu. No dieting involved.

Interesting. I abused aspartame in my teens and almost 30 years later it still gives me migraines... And yes this happens even if I didn't know ahead of time that the product contained aspartame.
The both of you should actually watch this video-
th-cam.com/video/Mf82FfX-wuU/w-d-xo.html
It’s about how there is no scientific proof that Sucralose does anything bad to your body - you just pee it out.
It's so complicated. And in fact sucralose still has a lot of pending research.
I'm not on keto, but thank you for all the great information. I've had a kidney transplant and this is so helpful to me. 👍🙋

This is a very great point. Being addicted to carbs and sugar can be very brutal and I should probably address that in another video
sadly I relate to everything you say. I have a very addictive response.
Im also addicted to the sweet taste. And have to avoid keto treats because of it.
Ship Creek
I do not have a strong addiction to sugary tastes, almost the opposite, they taste oddly bitter to me sometimes.
Whether that is accurate or not, if I ever feel hunger, which is rare on keto for me, I will know that it's breakfast time and immediately have some sardines or a burger, LOL😃

...and CHOCOLATE?!!!😁😁😁

Question !
Is it better to grow your own stevia and how does using the leaf form affect ketosis?
Love your videos! Thank you for all your hard work!
I would like to know the answer to this also
I've been using (powdered) stevia since I went keto last November, but I will check out monk fruit and glycerol the next time I go shopping.
Wait! Did you say CHOCOLATE monk fruit!? Oh my goodness!!! Somebody hold me back! 😋
I have tried the the Lakanto bars and they are delicious!
Try Choczero brand chocolate! It's amazing! They use monkfruit sweetener with no sugar alcohols.
Recently bought a huge bag of Stevia without realizing it had the Maltodextrin in it. UGH

Thanks for the presentation. That really helps me a lot.
from some of these sweeteners i get intense food cravings very fast. if i then eat something i don't get a good satiety feeling. i notice that my belly is bursting full and the satiety is not there. on the other side it does not eliminate my thirst like pure water, or water with ACV or sodium bicarbonate.
