Dear Hank, you keep mentioning that fructose and glucose are chemically very similar. However in the context of metabolism, fructose and glucose are very different. Glucose is metabolised primarily with insulin , either into storage (fat) or glycogen for immediate use. However fructose can't. It is metabolised primarily by the liver, creating various metabolic byproducts. However, because fructose is so chemically similar to glucose, it can gum up the insulin pathways, causing the pancreas to work harder producing more insulin to metabolise the same amount of blood sugar load. In this way, both sucrose and HFCS are much harder on the liver and pancreas than rice, pasta or glucose syrup are, calorie for calorie . Can you please do a video about this metabolic difference? ( my husband and I are co-patreons)
hey! i know this video is older but I've recently been told about how we still have an insulin response when using SOME artificial sweeteners. could you do a video on that and the repercussions of insulin in the bloodstream when there is no sugar to be dealt with?
Thank you so much for this. I've hit fifty, and my usual practice of maintaining my sugar intake hit a new snafu. It is good to know this information. Last month, I was telling my doctor the substitutes were increasing my sugar cravings. Now this video has explained this is true, confirming I'm not crazy, I can tackle and handle my sugar demands far better. Thank you again!
If I only saw this 3 years ago when I was working in a lab studying artificial sweeteners😂 it was a multi variable experiment where we gave the rats either sugar water, saccharin sweetened water or regular water (control). Within those groups there were high fat/ low fat diet groups. From what I remember, the rats that got the saccharin sweetened water were noticeably bigger at the end before uh... “sacrificing” them. There’s a reason I left the lab 😂 learned how difficult holding a 1kg rat was 🙄
@Uncle Joe Believe me, we could learn a lot from you Aussies, up here in the U.S. If only we could get the egos under control of the people who are too... whatever it is.... to admit that our systems suck and that some (most, really) of our cousins across the globe have found great success in their systems. Maybe we (the United States) need to hit rock bottom before enough people are willing to admit that there are better ways to achieve a higher quality of life. I'll be long dead by then (before people are willing to admit, not before we hit rock bottom, sadly), but hopefully my grandchildren might have a chance.
@@robertharris6092 nope, according to this very video, it can cause all sorts of health problems. Drink the sugared soda, if you must drink soda. At least your body knows what to do with the sugar.

If I take a beaker of Chemical A and a beaker of Chemical B, and mix them and they react, forming exactly 2 beakers' worth of Chemical C, then Chemical C is artificial. If, instead, I genetically engineer bacteria to produce Chemical C when fed Chemicals D, E, and F, then Chemical C is natural. So which would you rather have? Fun fact. When McDonalds first arrived in Australia they did really poorly. Turns out we didn't like the sweetness of the hamburger buns. People who travel to America quite often comment on how sweet everything is. So maybe the real problem with corn fructose syrup is it's cheapness enabling food to be made a lot sweeter there for higher calorie than if sucrose was used.
I got news for you, most of the granulated sugar in stores nowadays is sugar from beets, unless it says specifically "pure cane sugar" on the label, it's from sugar beets.
Same here ! But we all are. I got too much lead in my head. I loved breathing sweet smelling car exhaust when I was 5 (1958). It smelled soooo good. Streets, hiways, then freeways became redolent forests of vehicles emitting a favorite even now smell of lead infused hydrocarbons. Ahhhh, those were the days.
Fun fact about lead in fuel (19:40 - 21:02): Almost all fuel used in piston-powered airplanes (most non-jet) still has lead in it. I looked up the amount, and its about 1.5 grams per gallon. The standard grade is 100LL (low-lead.)
Lead in gasoline... Found a pump in CA about 2012 that had off-road 108 octane fuel that was labeled as containing lead. AV gas still has some lead in it, as do many racing fuels such as C116. We do use a lot less of it than we did in 1975 though.
MOST corn-dogs, lunchmeats, and canned meats are filled w high fructose corn syrup. Hair, butt-holes and cigarette butts, cheeks (fore and aft), ears, noses, feathers, feet, and the rest of what might be leftover from an animal is what goes into a hot-dog the center of the well-known and loved corn-dog.
I think the part about fooling our brains into craving more should be near the beginning. That's why high fructose corn syrup is so "fattening" if not addictive. Still better than Pb though. That's the best thing I can say about it.
Lead: For such a long time it was used as material to make fishing sinkers, many of which remain on the bottom of lakes and ponds slowly dissolving into the water where the lead is taken up by fish and enters the food chain.
The same reason "filler" words, such as "but", "um", "like", etc, exist, it gives us time to put our thoughts together so we can continue a conversation. However "awkward silences" take it a step further. The conversation has come to a natural stop, but we've been socialised to think that if we aren't talking it's wierd and we have to keep talking, so the "awkward silence" gets longer because both parties feel uncomfortable and are desperately focusing on both finding something to talk about, and how awkward them not talking is.
josh Subet Best tip for getting better at that is to learn not to give a shit dude. If you're looking at talking to people as a way to achieve something (a friend, a relationship, etc.) it becomes a task. once you stop caring and just take things as then come things start to get easier
Communication is very complex and a lot of it is subconscious (for example we may detect changes in tone/facial expression that we don't feel are obvious enough to mention). I'd expect that to explain awkward pauses, a video on the complexities of social interaction would be necessary.
I'd like to see a compilation of videos where you debunk stuff that tons of people believe (sometimes because news gets it wrong, or because a photo has been making the rounds, etc.). I'd also like a few compilations on SciShow Space as well.

And we do have bacteria in our guts (or pretty much anywhere). IIRC plants generally have a very low amount of calories per volume and you'd need to eat several garbage bags worth of grass each day to be full. Might be different for cotton though, not sure :-)
And if you really want to deal in quantities/multiples other than fifty four pounds and two ounces, don't ask for Gladys, she doesn't deal in that. Talk to cousin Tony, he's in Sicily.
Lead white oil paint is not nearly as opaque titanium white. It is however extremely tough and flexible. In the US, lead white is still available in artist-grade oil paint, although it can be difficult to find good quality lead white for a reasonable price. For oil painting on canvas, a lead white ground is the very best.
We also used lead in plumbing. I recall removing Victorian era lead pipes from a house I lived in as a teen. It was so fun and bendy. Also lead solder was used until recently. Recently being relative due to my age. Thank you for all your programs. I love them.
The healthiest sweetener is honey: it's all natural, both sweeter and lower in calories than sugar, has many other health benefits and very few side-effects.
It's sugar, dude. Sucrose. There may be some additional compounds in there, but you're eating sugar. And as sugar goes, there is zero difference between a sucrose molecule created in a lab and one vomited by a bee.
Yeah that hyperactive thing. I'm actually addicted to energy drinks and people always ask me if I dont get hyper or whatever. No, I dont. Never have. It makes me feel more awake and I feel like I can concentrate better. It really doesn't make me "over active". 'Sugar rush' sounds so dramatic too, while I feel its only a little effect. Drinking more than 2-3 cans a day does give other consequences, though. Shaky, sweaty, restless. But that also depends a lot on my other (diet) habits. And yes, I know its bad for me. Why do I drink it then? Well it tastes good and I'm probably 90% of the problem addicted to the caffeine inside. The habit basicly just slipped in the passed 10 years, drinking a little more and more each year.
One of my cats favorite foods was powdered sugar donuts! Why, if they can not taste sweetness? I am pretty sure he liked them because they were sweet, he licked the heck out of that powdered sugar on them!

Sucralose is said to be especially bad for that. Probably because it is technically a sugar ("ose"), we just don't have the enzyme to digest it

I'd like to see a compilation of videos where you debunk stuff that tons of people believe (sometimes because news gets it wrong, or because a photo has been making the rounds, etc.). I'd also like a few compilations on SciShow Space as well.
why is there sugar around my anus
THE JOKE HAD BEEN MADE. NOBODY ELSE HAS TO SAY IT.
You must have one sweet ass
I wouldn't mind licking it
STFU
To attract a mate
way to run a joke into the ground, think of something a little more original for once
0:59 "There'sabunchofdifferentkindsofsugarsbutthey'reall... sweet-tasting, edible carbohydrates. Oh, CARBOHYDRATES! Probably the tastiest word in the English language." This is gorgeous spoken word. :D Love you, SciShow & Hank Green et al., thanks for what you do so thoroughly and entertainingly. (
you forgot to say that CELLULOSE is made of sugar -- this fact is mindblowing.
actually all plants sweet or not are built of sugar!!
If we had cellulase enzyme like some bacteria do, we could get the Nutrition from grass .
Damnit!
And we do have bacteria in our guts (or pretty much anywhere). IIRC plants generally have a very low amount of calories per volume and you'd need to eat several garbage bags worth of grass each day to be full. Might be different for cotton though, not sure :-)
So is chitin the main component of arthropod shells.
acetylglucosamine is not equal to glucose.
I love you, SciShow.
Just gotta say stevia tastes like cancer
SAY MY NAME!!!
You've tasted cancer?
SuperSaqer i use honey or nothing
TheGermanPanda yeah it taste like stevia
you can mix stevia sugger with normal sugger or hunny, it blocks the aftertaste a bit ^^
Y'all are awesome. I have learned so much.
Up next... Maroon 5, Sugar.
Yes please
the long videos are the best! love it!
Why is there sugar around my Solid Banana 🍌?
That costs extra. Go downtown and ask for Gladys, she'll cut you a deal.
The problem is I hate the taste of sugar.
You're either lying or evolution has failed you and I encourage you not to reproduce
+Happy Flapjack dude
LOL at least I won't become a fatass.
+Happy Flapjack lmao perfect response
+flimsybop I don't think you're refering to cane and beat sugar. You're talking about high fructose corn syrup which tastes like shit.
We also used lead in plumbing. I recall removing Victorian era lead pipes from a house I lived in as a teen. It was so fun and bendy. Also lead solder was used until recently. Recently being relative due to my age. Thank you for all your programs. I love them.
can you do a video on autism?
Pretty sure he already did - Crash Course Psychology
+Ristar85 Wtf is 4chan
+6kvin10 I don't think you want to know.
+Joseph Fox Autism is a bit of a too broad spectrum to make a small video about.
DaBeanLord oh my fucking god.... what have I just seen.
+raztubes b-b-but it's natural. Science is evil so this must be better
Eating honey has been shown to help with allergies albeit only slightly.
Just sayin you shouldn't underestimate the additional compounds.
+raztubes I'm pretty sure it's fructose
Have you looked at the nutrition facts on a bottle of honey? I did a while ago and 1 teaspoon was 160 Calories.
Love your shirt modern Hank.
This was fantastic do more please
Hank, you should do an episode about how sugar is made. It's truly frightening.
