That's exactly where I am. I even have to be very careful with fruit. It may set me off. I just try to stick with berries as much as possible and use monkfruit extract if I need to sweeten food.
I've been on keto for 3-1/2 weeks and I am still waiting for that "full" feeling! Hunger pains are most certainly less but I do not feel full when I wake up or at the end of my 16 hr fasting period. But it is tolerable.

Ive been fat adapted for over 8 years and never feel hunger because my body knows how to get energy through fat either from dietary or from body. I lost 202 lbs and have kept it off for 11 years. Having a broken metabolism takes time to heal. Slowly increase your IF so you can get away with easy OMAD. Don't do dirty keto and check your ketones with a keto mojo kit. You will know when you are in ketosis without a doubt. Then hunger will be gone and your metabolism will start to heal. It takes some time but your body is smart.
Mayo clinic says: "A daily limit of 0.7 to 2 ounces (20 to 57 grams) of carbohydrates is typical with a low-carb diet. These amounts of carbohydrates provide 80 to 240 calories."
@@sounddiv Your doctor does not understand nutrition. He/she understands medicine, illness and some biology. In his/her 7 years of training, only 3 months of it were spent studying nutrition. And even then, only synthetic varitations of vitamins and minerals. "Talk to your doctor" is not good nutrition advice. ** That being said, I agree with he first thing you said: "BS.…for what body weight or bmi?". Very true, some peeps can get away with more carbs than others. I would add "activity level" is another co-factor.
Age 82, and I recently opted for 35g. of protein within an hour of getting up. After a week of trying to get 100 g. Protein every day, my weight is the same, but my waist and hips dropped an inch each. This made my lean mass four pounds greater on the BMI calculator. More muscle…At this age, keeping muscle is a high priority. Dr. Lyman interview convinced me to be consistent with protein intake, especially in the a.m. No more fasting at this age. I cannot afford to lose muscle.
He changes his diet with his socks so how does he know what works or harms long term. At least he’s realised red meat is what he really needs above any other food I suppose.

@@triphan5842 why do think he needs carbs for sports, that has been disproven recently fat can be used very rapidly “your body breaks down fats into glycerol and fatty acids in the process of lipolysis. The fatty acids can then be broken down directly to get energy, or can be used to make glucose through a multi-step process called gluconeogenesis. In gluconeogenesis, amino acids can also be used to make glucose” and why would we eat a diet that requires us to eat a bit of everything to get our nutrients? No other animal/species does this. Many plant foods block the absorption of and lock nutrients into fibre. It’s what you actually absorb that counts.
I’ve been keto for over 27 years. I focus on high protein, I’ve always eaten organ meat, I help my clients learn to do keto for their “why.” If they have epilepsy, they do keto WAY different than someone who wants to reverse type 2 diabetes.

I think if done correctly and cleanly, keto is a most excellent reset for the body. Doesn't have to be a forever thing. Maybe a 1 or 2 year thing to get us back on track and heal ourselves from many years of less than great dietary choices.
@@fKek-yy8tz This comment avoids the obvious. KETO is not simply for losing weight. It is mostly used for controlling insulin levels in the body and lowering blood glucose. Insulin resistance is a major factor in most diseases related to inflammation. That doesn't get fixed by eating what you said. That gets fixed by removing the sugar/carbohydrates from the food.

You work out a ton. You can tolerate waaay more carbs than most. Too many of the comments seem to be throwing a pity party yelling at anyone on keto thinking because you came off keto it means keto is bunk. But the majority of Americans are sedentary and need a minimal amount of carbs.
Did strict keto for almost 8 years and had an amazing reversal of insulin resistance. As I added small amounts of carbs back in - namely berries, dark chocolate, veggies, etc. I just seemed to feel better. But at the same time I didn’t realize that as I increased the carbs the fat had to go down. Once I learned this, it was a big game changer.

Bodies change. Food changes. Low carb is still the healthiest option for me. I read original Atkins the whole plan and there is a thing called carb tolerance. Mine is 30 g a day. There is diabetes in my family. Low carb keeps it at bay.

After i was through the menopause, in my late 50s, i started to gain weight steadily. Im in my 70s now. I was strict keto from 66-69, thought i could risk more than 20g of carbs a day and my sweet cravings became far more than I'd had previously! My weight ballooned by 8 kg, my inflamed joints came back.So, im sticking with keto, to keep the sweet cravings away. I eat a wide variety of foods, including cold cooked potatoes, just no deserts.

Sounds a lot more like Dr. Paul Saladino. Could you possibly do a video on what and how you eat now? What kind of foods you consider worth eating? I'm eating mainly eggs which I separate into the whites and add 2 yolks, red meat, chicken etc, some onion, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, sauerkraut and kimchi. Drinking probiotic milk, kifer. So mostly it's turning into a body-builder's diet.
This is why you never listen to anyone on social media on how to be healthy or live your life. First they tell you it’s gospel for years, then they say they changed their mind. 🙄. Do your own research and do what’s good for your own body.

The refined approach is wonderful if you don’t suffer from a binge eating disorder. Any kind of refined carbs and sugar will set me off, even fruits. I’ve literally eaten 5 full-size grapefruits in one sitting. Once my brain gets hijacked, dopamine receptors become overloaded, and leptin levels become blocked, I become a passenger in my own body while my brain is the driver. Keto has literally saved my life.
Five years of Carnivore Diet for me. I occasionally have fruit, but definitely no veggies or starches. I agree on the protein. It is the most important.

Ketosis works very well for me, personally.. (Mentally, energetically, and so for productivity). I just don't do it all of the time... And yes, I prefer the MAD version.. As for potassium, I just have a large avocado most days..
@getdown8990 Well, when in nature have we historically had 3.4g of potassium? Never, I would say, not even close, and throughout most of our history, we were often in starvation ketosis. I think a gram is fine with a similar level of elemental magnesium supplementation (and more salt). That's like double the amount of active potassium in these highly concentrated potassium citrate brands. I mean, even with low levels of insulin in the body, it's a lot! Your body will tell you if it's correct anyway, as you will be in a highly energised state, or not, during ketosis.
Ladies be carful with keto and fasting - I was for a year and a half.. it was great.. until it wasn’t. Raised stress hormones. Now adding fruit, raw milk potatoes (three meals a day and earring right away upon waking) and slowly healing
I have the same experience with keto, although I have never fasted. I was great, dropped a bunch of weight, and then it stalled and I felt awful. It took a long time to recover from that.

I'm trying 'lowish' carbs now. Try to stay on or just under 100 grams a day. I'm interested in fasting (that's why I'm here), but I'm hesitant because of my experience with keto. I'm hypothyroid now, and insulin resistant, and I wasn't all of that before keto, so...I don't want to take any more risks with my health, but I also want to lose weight. It sucks.
Another point if you look at the "keto like diet" studies. Where they gave them fats as well as what they consider low carb but is actually over 50g, something like 100-200g instead of 400g of carbs a day. Mixing fats and this amount of carbs turned their health markers bad. I would like to see a video addressing this.
Great minds think alike!😄 I came to mostly the same conclusions that you've mentioned above, especially about the balance of saturated fats to protein. I would occasionally get diarrhea or symptoms of GERD when I would overdo my Sat. Fat content. Also, being a Senior, I've heard from a variety of sources that the older you get, the more protein you should consume. That's why I consider myself more Ketovore than straight Keto now, though I do retain veggies like Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Artichoke Hearts, Broccoli, Avocado and Asparagus, to get in more potassium (I'm not a big 'salad' person). Lastly, I too have realized I should "march to the beat of my own drum", and that it's OK to occasionally 'ditch' the Keto. As a matter of fact, I learned recently that even on non-fasting, non-Keto, "Carb Pig-Out" Days, mostly around holidays, that If I limit the carbs to just one or two days, I can get right back onto Keto/Ketovore without as much lingering 'cravings' as would happen previously when I would 'fall off the wagon." Thanks for giving us 'Keto-Freaks' permission to do it our own way and trying out different things to personalize our own journeys.
Stopped eating keto a couple years ago. Worked great the 1st year but after going off and back on keto a year later noticed my BF would not come off like before and struggled with excessive muscle tension. Eating a low carb, moderate protein, low fat diet seems to balancing everything just fine today.
No…he needs a new spiel. A new thing to sell. So now what do all his followers do…follow or go…I will go. I never took keto too seriously….but a lot of “people” did. All his “guessing” led a lot of people down an apparently false path.
I eat keto but almost carnivore. Breakfast generally fried eggs and bacon, lunch sirloin steak, dinner ribeye steak with a peeled grilled zucchini. Works well currently. The vast majority of foods cause stomach discomfort and bloating. But these work for me.
Looks fine but bacon is a terrible meat to have daily. There's shocking links to bacon and heart failure because of how incredibly processed it is. I hope you're referring to at least proper butcher bacon, not American crispy bacon

Keto gave me a very disordered view of food. Restricting carbs for long periods always ended up with me bingeing. Made me fatter than ever cause I would over eat lower carb foods, gaining and losing 10-12 lbs over and over. Now eating 200 carbs a day in comparison to the “20 per day” and having lots more energy to lift weights. Counting macros is more sustainable for me, down 50 lbs.
Wow this sounds like me. The gaining and loosing same 10 pounds. After keto then binging on carbs. Been doing it past a year now. 🤔.then I hate myself for messing up keto. And the cycle goes on
@@vtg1632 I think it boils down to doing keto right or not right. Those who report little or no success are the same ones not limiting carbs and protein as much as it would require. Also remember when keto was first brought about to heal, it was a diet meant to mimic fasting so the macros are ultra important. And when it was brought about, we did not have the seed oils we have today that should always be avoided.

I'm currently on the R2M Protocol and its basis is exactly what you just cleared up about dirty keto and just eat in cleaner ways (high quality protein, low carbs (unless complex carbs), fiber and water... Thank you for this video. I’m 2 weeks into my keto journey and this video really confirmed my outlook on it. I’m 33 F with three kids under three! I was 115 5’8 before getting preggo with my first. I got up to 200 lb when I was pregnant with my twins. Two weeks ago I was at 169 and today I’m at 160. I’m very focused on nutrition but I abused carbs while breastfeeding my girls to give me some comfort during the chaos. I’m still breastfeeding! My outlook on keto is to do it with healthy whole foods and use it as a tool until I loose the weight. It’s been a great mental exercise to view the nutritional content of a meal from a different perspective. I’ve also tried ingredients like almond flour and using more vegetables to replace the typical carbohydrates in a meal. My gut told me not to lean into dairy for fat and I’ve been focusing on protein with the fat and adding in evoo, avocado oil, and other healthy fats instead of cheese. Thank you for the content!
Good video. This is about real life and what works for you as an individual. So many tend to get hung up on what they look like, or strictly adhering to a path, that they lose track of what is really important, which is how you actually feel all day every day - mentally and physically.
As an almost vegan I have followed you for meany years, Thomas - not that I have been tempted to eat meat or "going keto" or lose weight - but because I have trusted your honesty, whatever you have researched or recommended you have explained clearly and with earnest conviction - and so you have given much food for thought, and I always feel a bit up-beat after listened to your videos. Today, too. We all have to go through learning -processes. You represent the possibility to take action and take care of yourself. I try to find the right balance, too, for me; because how much I would like to eat Mediterranean style - it is difficult in my cold climate, much of our food is picked unripe and transported far and is cultivated beyond our control. One has to find one's own way. For us up north, healthy soups might be more convenient and nutrient-dense than salads, if not homegrown for a short season. We don't have free-roaming cattle over here in Scandinavia, they have to stay inside most of the year and live on hay and whatever people can provide for them in stables, while the fields are covered in snow. I feel sorry for them. As for any caged animals of any sort, like hens, and even fish. So being predominantly vegan I can afford organic and fair-trade and people- and animal-friendly produce. I take supplements of many sorts, because food can be very depleted of nutrients in todays food-markets. I have for a period had so severe potassium-deficit that I felt both nausea, tingling and faint. (Was unaware of that risk and the reason.) This was mostly due to blood-pressure medication being potassium-thieves. And nobocy can/should eat 8 bananas a day, that is too one-sided. So I restrict sodium and take potassium supplements. Bread, porridge, pasta, can all be healthy when made of healthy ingredients. Rape-seeds of modern varieties, organic, virgin, give omega 3 precursors, in a way that olive oils don't. And can be grown where no olives thrive. A vegan can seldom build muscles like yours, but for many people that much muscles is not equally important to stay healthy - also the body of a figure-skater would suffice, I think🙂. No doubt muscles help to soak up sugars, and if we are not having an insulin/weight-problem, we don't have to go on keto or stay on keto, but can eat a balanced diet including nutrient-dense carbs. Added sugars are vegan and nevertheless not healthy at all. Some don't get that. It is a bit boring to say it, but a balanced diet seems to be the best in the long run. The libido issue was one of the main things that got me off keto. When I stuck to it things just didn't work well. I am better off with more veggies, fruit, and high protein.
And my complaints, when you say saturated fat is bad without actually explaining why, I'm gonna tune out. When you comment on the color of foods related to health, I'm gonna tune out.
He did explain...he said it causes fatty liver. The research shows consuming HIGH saturated fat is bad and as a side effect thing like insulin resistance can occur. We should only get between 20-50 grams of Sat fat daily depending on the individual but some eat way more and this is what he meant. Look up the effects of consuming HIGH saturated fat...not normal levels of consumption

Beef liver contains too much vitamin A and copper to eat regularly. Vitamin A toxicity is real although some are more sensitive than others. And that much copper will easily create an imbalance. It's not really much of a multivitamin, it's mainly just way too much of a few things.
I eat 100g of calf liver every morning along side 100g of blood pudding, 200g cowboy steak and 3 slices of bacon. I'm 140lbs at 5'8". I feel perfectly fine. Blood tests are great. My doctor told me he see's no issue with my diet. That's just breakfast.
Quality protein from sources like fish, meat, eggs, skyr, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey, kefir and cheese is the foundation of my keto diet. I try to always get the full fat varieties of these foods. Walnuts have the best omega 6:3 ratio among nuts so I will eat those for satiety. I try to eat a big salad for lunch every day and sprinkle on some nutritional yeast. I agree with what you said about prioritizing potassium (I think the r/keto gatekeepers have it backwards regarding the ratio of sodium to potassium).
I’m on medical keto so I don’t think I’ll ever stop keto. I eat macadamia or Pili nuts for breakfast and lunch, and then I have red meat for dinner. I make my keto treats (peanut butter cups, and keto bounty bars). I guess I’m doing okay. I don’t eat a lot of butter. I love it though. I give myself a treat day with steak cooked in butter every other weekend. Thanks for all your tips! I found the video very informative. I might start tracking cortisol now. I never thought of that. I was strict Keto for over 3 years and included Intermittent fasting as part of the ritual very early on, progressing to whole and multiple day fasts. (stupidest thing I’ve ever done). I lost a lot of lean tissue chasing the tiny, almost insignificant pockets of remaining fat when I was already close to 10% body fat. All the while following the cult leaders who are all now changing their tune. I credit Ted Naiman with his balanced approach and using the protein lever for bringing me back to sensible mindset. And ridiculously, as I have been slowly bringing back clean carbs, I still have to fight those inner voices I harbored that tell me that carbs are evil. Leaving a cult is never easy.
Every day i am taking 5gr of sodium + 4gr of potassium (to retain water and not damage the kidneys), 500mg magnesium, 15mg zinc, 10K UI of D3 per week and multivitamin, because i am on KETO. I should include omega 3 oil in my diet too and this week i will also add MCT C8 oil in my diet.
I had great results doing keto, nothing got rid of the mid life gut in a post menopausal woman like keto the fat just melted away but you have to still eat within calorie limits - but once I got to my slim waist measure, I went off keto, and stayed a bit more low carb. ketones are a by product of fat metabolism - it's a useful tool but no need once you get to a goal weight there's no need to stay. I also have now stabilised at lower carb higher animal product and feel fabulous. Haven't gained more than a few kilos back over ten years, but I've still got a waist - carbs I notice just make my waist go very quickly so I keep the high intake to xmas and birthdays and so on, and usually just eat the same things every day - 1/2 cup of lentils or quinoa or brown rice or chickpeas with my dinner, with greens etc , 1/2 avacado with eggs for breakfast I usually eat sardines or other oily fish or chicken and a big colourful salad for lunch. so lower carb now. no fried foods, junk foods (seed oils). I eat hearts and liver as well. Ben Bikman said the saturated fat insulin resistance is in the context of carbohydrate being high
With an exercise nut like Thomas, I always take his comments with a grain of salt. I’ll never burn the calories like he does so my macro intake still has to be low carb. And like he says we need to do our own thing.
You did what is called DIRTY KETO. I'm 78 and have been carnivore for over a year. I eat almost all red meat - mainly beef, bison, lamb, occasionally pork and occasionally dark meat chicken . I add potassium, magnesium, and salt. Plus Vit D3 and K2. Zero processed food or sweeteners of any kind.

If a person is young, healthy, fit, then keto is not necessary but low carb will keep good health and energy. Protein should be the most important. Agreed. Strict keto is best for T2D, T1D, epilepsy, cancer, metabolic disorders.
Some of us don’t have the option to stop strict keto. I have epilepsy and getting off of meds. Yes red meat and lots of it. But I have to keep my fats up too. Don’t forget about us few that are not doing keto, just because.
I discovered Victoria’s keto kitchen. She has epilepsy and stays keto. She has developed a low carb flour which has been very useful making baking pleasurable. This has cut back on almond flour a whole lot. Check her out.
I am keto to control chronic migraines. No matter the medication I took, over the counter, prescription, preventative, they would all stop working. Before keto, my migraines would last for weeks. Now I don't get any migraines and I'm off any medications.
I did strict Keto for 1.5 years. Had low energy in the gym. I have learned balance in everything. Carbs are quick energy as they are first to be used through the ATP process. I have learned to avoid processed foods and eat a healthy well balanced diet to better fuel my workouts and daily energy needs.
Your content and delivery are ALWAYS so valuable - THANK YOU, Thomas!! I think, unless a person is tracking - or at least, has tracked for a period of time to get a real grasp on the nutrients they're getting from food, they should take a multivitamin. I have been tracking basically every morsel that goes into my mouth with Cronometer (I LOVE DOING IT - it's not a chore for me at all - more of a fun, rewarding challenge), and it's extremely difficult to hit all of the micronutrient targets - and I work at it. I take a multivitamin that calls for taking 4 capsules a day, but because I do know what I'm getting in food, I only need to take 1 instead - and then also add D3, Fish Oil, Magnesium, K2 & extra Potassium - and occasionally zinc. Getting enough potassium is really difficult - as is choline (I eat 1 egg a day, so come close, but usually I don't get to 100%).
1:30 ish: i also do keto since 8 months now and im also trying to focus it into a semi-carnivore version. meat just has it all. some veggies to make up for the lack of certain vitamins, some milk-products to make up for calcium intake, some green leaves for the magnesium (main Mg comes from the chlorphyl molecule) and thats about it. there are no essential carbs at all, you can eat meat and make the ones you need from gluconeogenesis, almost everything is in meat, only reason i also eat some veggies is because i like them for variety and i dont like organ meat (which would be the alternative)-
I'm still doing keto for weight loss because I let myself go for a few years but I was recently coming to the conclusion that when I get close to the shape I want to be in I will be doing roughly the same thing. Fresh fruits on occasion and honey in my smoothie when I am just sick of my recipe (using Dr Rhonda's)

The older u get the more you will realize that your body needs would change..I would even go high carb once a week …good carbs not garbage… it is a journey not a destination
I am not diabetic but wear a cgm. It has helped me understand the amount of carb refeeding my body needs. This is a good thing as you were saying because it's all about minimizing "stress" on body and low glucose (below 80) is too stressful for body and large spikes are equally stressful! CGM has been very educational!
I know there are alit of doctors out there really pushing the keto and carnivore diet hard but I’m not sure that is really necessary when all you need to do is being high protein moderation of fat and low carb
Yeah, I view the vegan, keto, and carnivore diets as cults. They all cherry pick data just to get you to drink the Kool Aid. I stay omnivore and just make sure I'm in a calorie deficit. Works well and I'm down 60 lbs. Finding good nutritional info is hard. So many grifters on YT, especially all the chiropractors.
Thank you for sharing this 👍 When I had high type 2 diabetes, I decided not to take meds. and went full Keto. In four months my A1C was in normal range. Seeing this success, I stay on Keto for two years but in the middle of my second year, I really began to feel pretty crappy with low energy, hair loss, muscle weakness, dehydration and began to even gain some weight. Then I decided to incorporate complex carbs back into my diet, like root vegetables, all fruits (not just berries) and organic/unprocessed grains, like brown rice, oat bran, oatmeal etc. As a result, I have felt so much better. Keto, like any extreme diet or exclusionary diet should be temporary until you reach your health goal. I agree that we should do what is best for our health and health goals and not be dogmatic with any diet or "health gurus".

True.. strict keto really stifled my gains at the gym but when I started adding moderate carbs it's like my body was revived, however this was during the "keto is king" rhetoric so I kept silent lol
I get annoyed how so many on the carnivore diet refuse to even discuss any potential drawbacks, and automatically attribute any good thing in their life to the carnivore diet without even talking about other lifestyle and dietary changes they have made.

I cook liver, chop it up into tiny capsule sized peices, freeze, swallow about 5 a day. Im sure someone will tell me that i shouldnt do it (frozen) but it seems to benefit me and its very cheap. I hate the overpowering aftertaste of liver. Thats why i do it this way.
I lost 56 lbs on keto, stayed in maintenance for over 1 1/2, got away from it for a year, tried it again in January (strict 20 net carbs or less....couldnt lose moree than 4 lbs and couldnt stay in ketosis to save my life. Would love to hear more about insulin resistance and how to reset everything.
The only carbs I eat are kale (like crazy it grows like a weed for us), herbs, broccoli, pickles, onions, garlic and sometimes tomatoes in low amounts we grow. I can't do it unless my plate is half crunchy flavourful vegetables.
I've been naturally relaxing the strict keto as well lately. I believe at the start you want to be strict for your body to get used again to being in ketosis, then you can relax and enjoy being more flexible with your diet

If you want a natural multivitamin, eat basically any green leafy vegetable. Meat has only a few vitamins, which are easily available in most other foods, without being a carcinogen and full of calories
@@sondrebergo actually all plants have carcinogens. Do the research. and the nutrients are not bioavailable to us. Not to mention the anti nutrients. I'm not completely against vegetables but there are some that I would never touch and that includes leafy greens. I used to be a vegetarian and they didn't help me at all. Breakouts, depression, brain fog, bleeding gums, bloat, etc. All that cleared when I incorporated more animal foods into my diet. My mom was an avid green juicer, salad and green tea person and did all the right things and still became diabetic.

I think bodyfat levels too play perhaps the most important role. A person at 10 percent bodyfat is very different from a person at 30 percent bodyfat. Guess I agree with the late Charles Poliquin. "Earn your carbs". Both in terms of actually being lean, and in terms of training.
Keto is life changing. There is some flexibility in the ketosis range so have a varied intake and don't be too restrictive. Enjoy your life and nature's bounty! Most important is no to very low sugar and don't go carb crazy. Ive had pizza days and still stayed in ketosis just added the next day omad and -30g carb.

I find Keto too restrictive. I really came to hate almond flour and nuts. I do "low carb", eat clean, up to 100g of carbs a day. When I was eating the SAD, I was probably eating 250-350g a day. It's made a huge difference in being able to get my bloodwork back to normal and overall health. You don't need to be so strict with yourself to maintain you weight and health.
I went from keto to carnivore. I hadn't eaten beef in 40 plus years. It's been difficult adjusting to eating beef, but I do feel better. I'm also in ketosis, even with the additional protein.
I will tell you, I figured it out. Keto is to get genes expressed and recover ability to process fat. That can't be done in a day, it takes months. After that, you don't have to be strict, but you must not destroy your fat metabolism again. Because the whole problem of obesity and T2 diabetes is the atrophy of fat metabolism. So Thomas, godspeed but dip into ketosis often enough to keep those genes expressed.
If you look like Thomas DeLauer you might be able to not do keto. For the vast majority of overweight insulin resistant people, keto is the way to go most of the time.

I have always been lean, also before I started keto. I stopped keto (after few years) and now I am getting fat for the first time in my life. I eat the same as I did before I started keto (clean natural foods) but I gain wait! Have I lost the ability to metabolize carbs?
Did keto for 5 years. It was good at first. Then my hormones tanked. Went high protein and for insulin resistance. Now I’m 50% carbs 20% fat and 30% protein and all is great. Hormones sleep mood running and workout and libido. I will go on record to say that over doing it on fats or protein WILL catch up to you. Thanks to Mike Fave my life has changed for the better. It’s a carb world.
Great to hear, I’ve adopted a similar approach with 10% of my calorie intake consisting of fat, majority of people don’t know this but low fat high carb is powerful for reversing insulin resistance. I must mention, the low fat approach is temporary, until I fix my weight and metabolism
If you do saturated fats then you need to cut out the carbs, according to the Randle cycle. Saturated fats with sugar exponentiates the sugar problem. Without the sugar, saturated fat effect on health is negligible.
In excess amounts, but if one is not overeating total calories .. yes, it does matter, and one is metabolically flexible you can eat both. It is the PUFAs /seed oils/ made made oils that create the problem. The Randle cycle is misunderstood by many .. all the time, you have some cells burning fat - i.e muscles at rest, and some cells that always need glucose. Your entire body is not doing one or the other.
But doing it like that is it not putting you in the grey area? I either go full carb, or full keto. If I go half carb, I end up feeling hungry all day, then get irritable when I am switching back to ketosis, but once back in ketosis irritability goes away as well as hunger.

I think that for some people and their health situation, an elimination diet of keto, carnivore, or lion is necessary for improvement of conditions, but after a while clean carbs should brought back in moderation.
Vegetables provide potassium but they contain carbs as well, so upping one’s intake of vegetables means they’re doing low carb rather than keto. It seems low carb is the best with lots of vegetables, reasonable amounts of protein and fats besides some fruit and nuts. No flour and no sugar.. In this respect, it’s worth mentioning that leafy greens are the best source of potassium and fiber. Last but not least, find ways to enjoy your meals and it doesn’t hurt to experience some hunger sometimes around 12 hours per day including sleep hours. That can be made possible if you take the Last meal of the day 3 hours before bedtime.
You are exactly right. I was on keto and I lost 50 pounds but I ended up skinny fat because I concentrated more on keeping my carbs low and my fat high that I just basically forgot to track my protein. Now I do the exact opposite, I hit my protein targets, I keep my carbohydrates around 150g, and whatever fat I get is what I get. Most of the time it’s not a problem because the fats kind of fall into place. I’m not stating this is keto, but it’s definitely working better for me to retain muscle in a deficit. If I go into a surplus, I actually keep my protein numbers the same and increase my carbohydrates. I still do a long fast but that’s for my health. I have not had any electrolyte problems, but I do use a mineralized sea salt every morning a half of a teaspoon on non-fasting days and one teaspoon on fasting days in two doses. I am rarely ever hungry. Usually, it’s my fault because I’m out doing things and I’m not eating within the time limit that I’ve specified for my meals. So that’s more of habit, hunger I also quit long intermittent fasting times I only fast from 8 PM to 8 AM my resting time. I also quit OMAD because I could not hit my macros.
The full cycle is when you clean up diet, try keto, try carnivore, then come all the way back to 250g carbs daily and still stay lean, feel great, and thrive. I had issues with weight my whole life, did the whole circle I mentioned, now I'm healthy and fit with 250g carbs daily. All those who shy away are missing out.

@@teresamoore4126 I agree with you. I have never had a bad issue with weight but I went toward Keto at 70 years old because of slow consistent gain and not so great blood numbers. In 7 months the change was monumental, blood numbers great and blood pressure now averaging 106 / 61 plus I lost 40 pounds and weigh 150.
Cut out the polyunsaturated oils. That is where most keto dieters go wrong. My stomach has been shrinking despite consuming high sugar and carbs. All I do is eat mostly butter/ghee as my fat source. I do not eat olive oil or any vegetable oil for that matter in any significant degree. I eat mostly butter/ghee and some beef fat. I do eat carbs, not because I am pro carb per se. I do because I like them and my stomach is shrinking despite consuming them as long as I eat mostly saturated fat and no polyunsaturated oil to speak of. The ideal diet is probably eating mostly red meat with perhaps added butter. Vegetables and fruit are not necessary for nutrition and actually add antinutrients to your diet.

Best thing about keto is fat keeps you feeling full. No will power needed. As soon as I start eating sugar, cravings again.
That's exactly where I am. I even have to be very careful with fruit. It may set me off. I just try to stick with berries as much as possible and use monkfruit extract if I need to sweeten food.
I've been on keto for 3-1/2 weeks and I am still waiting for that "full" feeling! Hunger pains are most certainly less but I do not feel full when I wake up or at the end of my 16 hr fasting period. But it is tolerable.

Ive been fat adapted for over 8 years and never feel hunger because my body knows how to get energy through fat either from dietary or from body. I lost 202 lbs and have kept it off for 11 years. Having a broken metabolism takes time to heal. Slowly increase your IF so you can get away with easy OMAD. Don't do dirty keto and check your ketones with a keto mojo kit. You will know when you are in ketosis without a doubt. Then hunger will be gone and your metabolism will start to heal. It takes some time but your body is smart.

Age 82, and I recently opted for 35g. of protein within an hour of getting up. After a week of trying to get 100 g. Protein every day, my weight is the same, but my waist and hips dropped an inch each. This made my lean mass four pounds greater on the BMI calculator. More muscle…At this age, keeping muscle is a high priority. Dr. Lyman interview convinced me to be consistent with protein intake, especially in the a.m. No more fasting at this age. I cannot afford to lose muscle.
This can be a big problem as we age. Be sure to take a good multiple supplement especially one that provides the electrolytes

I think if done correctly and cleanly, keto is a most excellent reset for the body. Doesn't have to be a forever thing. Maybe a 1 or 2 year thing to get us back on track and heal ourselves from many years of less than great dietary choices.

You work out a ton. You can tolerate waaay more carbs than most. Too many of the comments seem to be throwing a pity party yelling at anyone on keto thinking because you came off keto it means keto is bunk. But the majority of Americans are sedentary and need a minimal amount of carbs.
Did strict keto for almost 8 years and had an amazing reversal of insulin resistance. As I added small amounts of carbs back in - namely berries, dark chocolate, veggies, etc. I just seemed to feel better.
But at the same time I didn’t realize that as I increased the carbs the fat had to go down. Once I learned this, it was a big game changer.

Bodies change. Food changes. Low carb is still the healthiest option for me. I read original Atkins the whole plan and there is a thing called carb tolerance. Mine is 30 g a day. There is diabetes in my family. Low carb keeps it at bay.

Chicken is high in omega-6 if it's not pasture-raised because it's fed corn chicken seed oil to fatten them up
After i was through the menopause, in my late 50s, i started to gain weight steadily. Im in my 70s now. I was strict keto from 66-69, thought i could risk more than 20g of carbs a day and my sweet cravings became far more than I'd had previously! My weight ballooned by 8 kg, my inflamed joints came back.So, im sticking with keto, to keep the sweet cravings away. I eat a wide variety of foods, including cold cooked potatoes, just no deserts.

I'm eating mainly eggs which I separate into the whites and add 2 yolks, red meat, chicken etc, some onion, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, sauerkraut and kimchi. Drinking probiotic milk, kifer. So mostly it's turning into a body-builder's diet.

The refined approach is wonderful if you don’t suffer from a binge eating disorder. Any kind of refined carbs and sugar will set me off, even fruits. I’ve literally eaten 5 full-size grapefruits in one sitting. Once my brain gets hijacked, dopamine receptors become overloaded, and leptin levels become blocked, I become a passenger in my own body while my brain is the driver. Keto has literally saved my life.

Never, I would say, not even close, and throughout most of our history, we were often in starvation ketosis.
I think a gram is fine with a similar level of elemental magnesium supplementation (and more salt).
That's like double the amount of active potassium in these highly concentrated potassium citrate brands.
I mean, even with low levels of insulin in the body, it's a lot!
Your body will tell you if it's correct anyway, as you will be in a highly energised state, or not, during ketosis.

Ladies be carful with keto and fasting - I was for a year and a half.. it was great.. until it wasn’t. Raised stress hormones. Now adding fruit, raw milk potatoes (three meals a day and earring right away upon waking) and slowly healing
I have the same experience with keto, although I have never fasted. I was great, dropped a bunch of weight, and then it stalled and I felt awful. It took a long time to recover from that.

I'm hypothyroid now, and insulin resistant, and I wasn't all of that before keto, so...I don't want to take any more risks with my health, but I also want to lose weight. It sucks.

Another point if you look at the "keto like diet" studies. Where they gave them fats as well as what they consider low carb but is actually over 50g, something like 100-200g instead of 400g of carbs a day. Mixing fats and this amount of carbs turned their health markers bad. I would like to see a video addressing this.

Great minds think alike!😄 I came to mostly the same conclusions that you've mentioned above, especially about the balance of saturated fats to protein. I would occasionally get diarrhea or symptoms of GERD when I would overdo my Sat. Fat content. Also, being a Senior, I've heard from a variety of sources that the older you get, the more protein you should consume. That's why I consider myself more Ketovore than straight Keto now, though I do retain veggies like Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Artichoke Hearts, Broccoli, Avocado and Asparagus, to get in more potassium (I'm not a big 'salad' person). Lastly, I too have realized I should "march to the beat of my own drum", and that it's OK to occasionally 'ditch' the Keto. As a matter of fact, I learned recently that even on non-fasting, non-Keto, "Carb Pig-Out" Days, mostly around holidays, that If I limit the carbs to just one or two days, I can get right back onto Keto/Ketovore without as much lingering 'cravings' as would happen previously when I would 'fall off the wagon." Thanks for giving us 'Keto-Freaks' permission to do it our own way and trying out different things to personalize our own journeys.
Stopped eating keto a couple years ago. Worked great the 1st year but after going off and back on keto a year later noticed my BF would not come off like before and struggled with excessive muscle tension. Eating a low carb, moderate protein, low fat diet seems to balancing everything just fine today.

I eat keto but almost carnivore. Breakfast generally fried eggs and bacon, lunch sirloin steak, dinner ribeye steak with a peeled grilled zucchini. Works well currently. The vast majority of foods cause stomach discomfort and bloating. But these work for me.
Looks fine but bacon is a terrible meat to have daily. There's shocking links to bacon and heart failure because of how incredibly processed it is. I hope you're referring to at least proper butcher bacon, not American crispy bacon

I've never tried European bacon, but I've always found bacon here in the states nasty. I can't eat it. It literally tastes like fatty poison to me.

Keto gave me a very disordered view of food. Restricting carbs for long periods always ended up with me bingeing. Made me fatter than ever cause I would over eat lower carb foods, gaining and losing 10-12 lbs over and over. Now eating 200 carbs a day in comparison to the “20 per day” and having lots more energy to lift weights. Counting macros is more sustainable for me, down 50 lbs.
Wow this sounds like me. The gaining and loosing same 10 pounds. After keto then binging on carbs. Been doing it past a year now. 🤔.then I hate myself for messing up keto. And the cycle goes on

@@vtg1632 I think it boils down to doing keto right or not right. Those who report little or no success are the same ones not limiting carbs and protein as much as it would require. Also remember when keto was first brought about to heal, it was a diet meant to mimic fasting so the macros are ultra important.
And when it was brought about, we did not have the seed oils we have today that should always be avoided.

Thank you for this video. I’m 2 weeks into my keto journey and this video really confirmed my outlook on it. I’m 33 F with three kids under three! I was 115 5’8 before getting preggo with my first. I got up to 200 lb when I was pregnant with my twins. Two weeks ago I was at 169 and today I’m at 160. I’m very focused on nutrition but I abused carbs while breastfeeding my girls to give me some comfort during the chaos. I’m still breastfeeding! My outlook on keto is to do it with healthy whole foods and use it as a tool until I loose the weight. It’s been a great mental exercise to view the nutritional content of a meal from a different perspective. I’ve also tried ingredients like almond flour and using more vegetables to replace the typical carbohydrates in a meal. My gut told me not to lean into dairy for fat and I’ve been focusing on protein with the fat and adding in evoo, avocado oil, and other healthy fats instead of cheese. Thank you for the content!
Good video. This is about real life and what works for you as an individual. So many tend to get hung up on what they look like, or strictly adhering to a path, that they lose track of what is really important, which is how you actually feel all day every day - mentally and physically.
As an almost vegan I have followed you for meany years, Thomas - not that I have been tempted to eat meat or "going keto" or lose weight - but because I have trusted your honesty, whatever you have researched or recommended you have explained clearly and with earnest conviction - and so you have given much food for thought, and I always feel a bit up-beat after listened to your videos. Today, too. We all have to go through learning -processes. You represent the possibility to take action and take care of yourself.
I try to find the right balance, too, for me; because how much I would like to eat Mediterranean style - it is difficult in my cold climate, much of our food is picked unripe and transported far and is cultivated beyond our control. One has to find one's own way. For us up north, healthy soups might be more convenient and nutrient-dense than salads, if not homegrown for a short season.
We don't have free-roaming cattle over here in Scandinavia, they have to stay inside most of the year and live on hay and whatever people can provide for them in stables, while the fields are covered in snow. I feel sorry for them. As for any caged animals of any sort, like hens, and even fish. So being predominantly vegan I can afford organic and fair-trade and people- and animal-friendly produce.
I take supplements of many sorts, because food can be very depleted of nutrients in todays food-markets. I have for a period had so severe potassium-deficit that I felt both nausea, tingling and faint. (Was unaware of that risk and the reason.) This was mostly due to blood-pressure medication being potassium-thieves. And nobocy can/should eat 8 bananas a day, that is too one-sided. So I restrict sodium and take potassium supplements. Bread, porridge, pasta, can all be healthy when made of healthy ingredients. Rape-seeds of modern varieties, organic, virgin, give omega 3 precursors, in a way that olive oils don't. And can be grown where no olives thrive.
A vegan can seldom build muscles like yours, but for many people that much muscles is not equally important to stay healthy - also the body of a figure-skater would suffice, I think🙂. No doubt muscles help to soak up sugars, and if we are not having an insulin/weight-problem, we don't have to go on keto or stay on keto, but can eat a balanced diet including nutrient-dense carbs. Added sugars are vegan and nevertheless not healthy at all. Some don't get that. It is a bit boring to say it, but a balanced diet seems to be the best in the long run. I thank you, Thomas, for sharing your journey and all your insights.
The libido issue was one of the main things that got me off keto. When I stuck to it things just didn't work well. I am better off with more veggies, fruit, and high protein.

He did explain...he said it causes fatty liver. The research shows consuming HIGH saturated fat is bad and as a side effect thing like insulin resistance can occur. We should only get between 20-50 grams of Sat fat daily depending on the individual but some eat way more and this is what he meant. Look up the effects of consuming HIGH saturated fat...not normal levels of consumption

Beef liver contains too much vitamin A and copper to eat regularly. Vitamin A toxicity is real although some are more sensitive than others. And that much copper will easily create an imbalance. It's not really much of a multivitamin, it's mainly just way too much of a few things.

I eat 100g of calf liver every morning along side 100g of blood pudding, 200g cowboy steak and 3 slices of bacon. I'm 140lbs at 5'8". I feel perfectly fine. Blood tests are great. My doctor told me he see's no issue with my diet.

Quality protein from sources like fish, meat, eggs, skyr, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey, kefir and cheese is the foundation of my keto diet. I try to always get the full fat varieties of these foods. Walnuts have the best omega 6:3 ratio among nuts so I will eat those for satiety. I try to eat a big salad for lunch every day and sprinkle on some nutritional yeast. I agree with what you said about prioritizing potassium (I think the r/keto gatekeepers have it backwards regarding the ratio of sodium to potassium).

I’m on medical keto so I don’t think I’ll ever stop keto. I eat macadamia or Pili nuts for breakfast and lunch, and then I have red meat for dinner. I make my keto treats (peanut butter cups, and keto bounty bars). I guess I’m doing okay. I don’t eat a lot of butter. I love it though. I give myself a treat day with steak cooked in butter every other weekend.

I was strict Keto for over 3 years and included Intermittent fasting as part of the ritual very early on, progressing to whole and multiple day fasts. (stupidest thing I’ve ever done).
I lost a lot of lean tissue chasing the tiny, almost insignificant pockets of remaining fat when I was already close to 10% body fat.
All the while following the cult leaders who are all now changing their tune.
I credit Ted Naiman with his balanced approach and using the protein lever for bringing me back to sensible mindset.
And ridiculously, as I have been slowly bringing back clean carbs, I still have to fight those inner voices I harbored that tell me that carbs are evil.

Every day i am taking 5gr of sodium + 4gr of potassium (to retain water and not damage the kidneys), 500mg magnesium, 15mg zinc, 10K UI of D3 per week and multivitamin, because i am on KETO.
I should include omega 3 oil in my diet too and this week i will also add MCT C8 oil in my diet.
I had great results doing keto, nothing got rid of the mid life gut in a post menopausal woman like keto the fat just melted away but you have to still eat within calorie limits - but once I got to my slim waist measure, I went off keto, and stayed a bit more low carb. ketones are a by product of fat metabolism - it's a useful tool but no need once you get to a goal weight there's no need to stay.
I also have now stabilised at lower carb higher animal product and feel fabulous. Haven't gained more than a few kilos back over ten years, but I've still got a waist - carbs I notice just make my waist go very quickly so I keep the high intake to xmas and birthdays and so on, and usually just eat the same things every day - 1/2 cup of lentils or quinoa or brown rice or chickpeas with my dinner, with greens etc , 1/2 avacado with eggs for breakfast I usually eat sardines or other oily fish or chicken and a big colourful salad for lunch. so lower carb now. no fried foods, junk foods (seed oils).

With an exercise nut like Thomas, I always take his comments with a grain of salt. I’ll never burn the calories like he does so my macro intake still has to be low carb. And like he says we need to do our own thing.
The guy said he eats maybe 100 grams of carbohydrates in a day. It doesn’t take a high level of activity to burn those.

You did what is called DIRTY KETO. I'm 78 and have been carnivore for over a year. I eat almost all red meat - mainly beef, bison, lamb, occasionally pork and occasionally dark meat chicken . I add potassium, magnesium, and salt. Plus Vit D3 and K2. Zero processed food or sweeteners of any kind.

If a person is young, healthy, fit, then keto is not necessary but low carb will keep good health and energy. Protein should be the most important. Agreed. Strict keto is best for T2D, T1D, epilepsy, cancer, metabolic disorders.
Some of us don’t have the option to stop strict keto. I have epilepsy and getting off of meds. Yes red meat and lots of it. But I have to keep my fats up too. Don’t forget about us few that are not doing keto, just because.
I discovered Victoria’s keto kitchen. She has epilepsy and stays keto. She has developed a low carb flour which has been very useful making baking pleasurable. This has cut back on almond flour a whole lot. Check her out.

I am keto to control chronic migraines. No matter the medication I took, over the counter, prescription, preventative, they would all stop working. Before keto, my migraines would last for weeks. Now I don't get any migraines and I'm off any medications.

I did strict Keto for 1.5 years. Had low energy in the gym. I have learned balance in everything. Carbs are quick energy as they are first to be used through the ATP process. I have learned to avoid processed foods and eat a healthy well balanced diet to better fuel my workouts and daily energy needs.

I think, unless a person is tracking - or at least, has tracked for a period of time to get a real grasp on the nutrients they're getting from food, they should take a multivitamin. I have been tracking basically every morsel that goes into my mouth with Cronometer (I LOVE DOING IT - it's not a chore for me at all - more of a fun, rewarding challenge), and it's extremely difficult to hit all of the micronutrient targets - and I work at it. I take a multivitamin that calls for taking 4 capsules a day, but because I do know what I'm getting in food, I only need to take 1 instead - and then also add D3, Fish Oil, Magnesium, K2 & extra Potassium - and occasionally zinc. Getting enough potassium is really difficult - as is choline (I eat 1 egg a day, so come close, but usually I don't get to 100%).
1:30 ish: i also do keto since 8 months now and im also trying to focus it into a semi-carnivore version. meat just has it all. some veggies to make up for the lack of certain vitamins, some milk-products to make up for calcium intake, some green leaves for the magnesium (main Mg comes from the chlorphyl molecule) and thats about it. there are no essential carbs at all, you can eat meat and make the ones you need from gluconeogenesis, almost everything is in meat, only reason i also eat some veggies is because i like them for variety and i dont like organ meat (which would be the alternative)-
I'm still doing keto for weight loss because I let myself go for a few years but I was recently coming to the conclusion that when I get close to the shape I want to be in I will be doing roughly the same thing. Fresh fruits on occasion and honey in my smoothie when I am just sick of my recipe (using Dr Rhonda's)

I am not diabetic but wear a cgm. It has helped me understand the amount of carb refeeding my body needs. This is a good thing as you were saying because it's all about minimizing "stress" on body and low glucose (below 80) is too stressful for body and large spikes are equally stressful! CGM has been very educational!
I know there are alit of doctors out there really pushing the keto and carnivore diet hard but I’m not sure that is really necessary when all you need to do is being high protein moderation of fat and low carb
Yeah, I view the vegan, keto, and carnivore diets as cults. They all cherry pick data just to get you to drink the Kool Aid. I stay omnivore and just make sure I'm in a calorie deficit. Works well and I'm down 60 lbs. Finding good nutritional info is hard. So many grifters on YT, especially all the chiropractors.

When I had high type 2 diabetes, I decided not to take meds. and went full Keto. In four months my A1C was in normal range. Seeing this success, I stay on Keto for two years but in the middle of my second year, I really began to feel pretty crappy with low energy, hair loss, muscle weakness, dehydration and began to even gain some weight. Then I decided to incorporate complex carbs back into my diet, like root vegetables, all fruits (not just berries) and organic/unprocessed grains, like brown rice, oat bran, oatmeal etc.
As a result, I have felt so much better. Keto, like any extreme diet or exclusionary diet should be temporary until you reach your health goal. I agree that we should do what is best for our health and health goals and not be dogmatic with any diet or "health gurus".
Everyone pivoting 😂 I love it. Let's admit we all got a little dogmatic and it was a "blind leading the blind" phenomenon. Stay flexible, humble and wise my friends.
True.. strict keto really stifled my gains at the gym but when I started adding moderate carbs it's like my body was revived, however this was during the "keto is king" rhetoric so I kept silent lol

I cook liver, chop it up into tiny capsule sized peices, freeze, swallow about 5 a day. Im sure someone will tell me that i shouldnt do it (frozen) but it seems to benefit me and its very cheap.
I hate the overpowering aftertaste of liver. Thats why i do it this way.

I lost 56 lbs on keto, stayed in maintenance for over 1 1/2, got away from it for a year, tried it again in January (strict 20 net carbs or less....couldnt lose moree than 4 lbs and couldnt stay in ketosis to save my life. Would love to hear more about insulin resistance and how to reset everything.

The only carbs I eat are kale (like crazy it grows like a weed for us), herbs, broccoli, pickles, onions, garlic and sometimes tomatoes in low amounts we grow. I can't do it unless my plate is half crunchy flavourful vegetables.

Yes. It's nature's multivitamin that's actually bioavailable. Other multivitamins on the market are synthetic.
If you want a natural multivitamin, eat basically any green leafy vegetable. Meat has only a few vitamins, which are easily available in most other foods, without being a carcinogen and full of calories
@@sondrebergo actually all plants have carcinogens. Do the research. and the nutrients are not bioavailable to us. Not to mention the anti nutrients. I'm not completely against vegetables but there are some that I would never touch and that includes leafy greens. I used to be a vegetarian and they didn't help me at all. Breakouts, depression, brain fog, bleeding gums, bloat, etc. All that cleared when I incorporated more animal foods into my diet. My mom was an avid green juicer, salad and green tea person and did all the right things and still became diabetic.
ketones definitely reduced glutamate in my brain leading to reduced hunger, cravings gone & no more compulsive addiction like behaviors. I had more gaba and slept heaps deeper despite serotonin levels lower from lack of carbs

I think bodyfat levels too play perhaps the most important role. A person at 10 percent bodyfat is very different from a person at 30 percent bodyfat. Guess I agree with the late Charles Poliquin. "Earn your carbs". Both in terms of actually being lean, and in terms of training.

The acceptance of carbs is direcrly proportional to the muscle mass we have. Because otherwise carbohydrates will harm us more than help us.
Keto is life changing. There is some flexibility in the ketosis range so have a varied intake and don't be too restrictive. Enjoy your life and nature's bounty! Most important is no to very low sugar and don't go carb crazy. Ive had pizza days and still stayed in ketosis just added the next day omad and -30g carb.

I find Keto too restrictive. I really came to hate almond flour and nuts. I do "low carb", eat clean, up to 100g of carbs a day. When I was eating the SAD, I was probably eating 250-350g a day. It's made a huge difference in being able to get my bloodwork back to normal and overall health. You don't need to be so strict with yourself to maintain you weight and health.

I went from keto to carnivore. I hadn't eaten beef in 40 plus years. It's been difficult adjusting to eating beef, but I do feel better. I'm also in ketosis, even with the additional protein.

I will tell you, I figured it out.
Keto is to get genes expressed and recover ability to process fat. That can't be done in a day, it takes months. After that, you don't have to be strict, but you must not destroy your fat metabolism again. Because the whole problem of obesity and T2 diabetes is the atrophy of fat metabolism.
So Thomas, godspeed but dip into ketosis often enough to keep those genes expressed.
If you look like Thomas DeLauer you might be able to not do keto. For the vast majority of overweight insulin resistant people, keto is the way to go most of the time.

I have always been lean, also before I started keto. I stopped keto (after few years) and now I am getting fat for the first time in my life. I eat the same as I did before I started keto (clean natural foods) but I gain wait! Have I lost the ability to metabolize carbs?
Did keto for 5 years. It was good at first. Then my hormones tanked. Went high protein and for insulin resistance. Now I’m 50% carbs 20% fat and 30% protein and all is great. Hormones sleep mood running and workout and libido. I will go on record to say that over doing it on fats or protein WILL catch up to you. Thanks to Mike Fave my life has changed for the better. It’s a carb world.
Great to hear, I’ve adopted a similar approach with 10% of my calorie intake consisting of fat, majority of people don’t know this but low fat high carb is powerful for reversing insulin resistance. I must mention, the low fat approach is temporary, until I fix my weight and metabolism
If you do saturated fats then you need to cut out the carbs, according to the Randle cycle. Saturated fats with sugar exponentiates the sugar problem. Without the sugar, saturated fat effect on health is negligible.
In excess amounts, but if one is not overeating total calories .. yes, it does matter, and one is metabolically flexible you can eat both. It is the PUFAs /seed oils/ made made oils that create the problem. The Randle cycle is misunderstood by many .. all the time, you have some cells burning fat - i.e muscles at rest, and some cells that always need glucose. Your entire body is not doing one or the other.
But doing it like that is it not putting you in the grey area? I either go full carb, or full keto. If I go half carb, I end up feeling hungry all day, then get irritable when I am switching back to ketosis, but once back in ketosis irritability goes away as well as hunger.
same here, being in the gray area gives me migraines hunger pangs and im exhausted.

I think that for some people and their health situation, an elimination diet of keto, carnivore, or lion is necessary for improvement of conditions, but after a while clean carbs should brought back in moderation.
Vegetables provide potassium but they contain carbs as well, so upping one’s intake of vegetables means they’re doing low carb rather than keto. It seems low carb is the best with lots of vegetables, reasonable amounts of protein and fats besides some fruit and nuts. No flour and no sugar.. In this respect, it’s worth mentioning that leafy greens are the best source of potassium and fiber. Last but not least, find ways to enjoy your meals and it doesn’t hurt to experience some hunger sometimes around 12 hours per day including sleep hours. That can be made possible if you take the Last meal of the day 3 hours before bedtime.

You are exactly right. I was on keto and I lost 50 pounds but I ended up skinny fat because I concentrated more on keeping my carbs low and my fat high that I just basically forgot to track my protein. Now I do the exact opposite, I hit my protein targets, I keep my carbohydrates around 150g, and whatever fat I get is what I get. Most of the time it’s not a problem because the fats kind of fall into place. I’m not stating this is keto, but it’s definitely working better for me to retain muscle in a deficit. If I go into a surplus, I actually keep my protein numbers the same and increase my carbohydrates. I still do a long fast but that’s for my health.
I have not had any electrolyte problems, but I do use a mineralized sea salt every morning a half of a teaspoon on non-fasting days and one teaspoon on fasting days in two doses.
I am rarely ever hungry. Usually, it’s my fault because I’m out doing things and I’m not eating within the time limit that I’ve specified for my meals. So that’s more of habit, hunger
I also quit long intermittent fasting times I only fast from 8 PM to 8 AM my resting time.
I also quit OMAD because I could not hit my macros.
The full cycle is when you clean up diet, try keto, try carnivore, then come all the way back to 250g carbs daily and still stay lean, feel great, and thrive. I had issues with weight my whole life, did the whole circle I mentioned, now I'm healthy and fit with 250g carbs daily. All those who shy away are missing out.
Mmm, not sure that's a good idea. So what about high insulin in the blood and that being a driver of cancer and other diseases. I listened to Dr Robert Lustig, it's so confusing. Who the heck knows what we should be eating.
@@teresamoore4126 I agree with you. I have never had a bad issue with weight but I went toward Keto at 70 years old because of slow consistent gain and not so great blood numbers. In 7 months the change was monumental, blood numbers great and blood pressure now averaging 106 / 61 plus I lost 40 pounds and weigh 150.

Cut out the polyunsaturated oils. That is where most keto dieters go wrong. My stomach has been shrinking despite consuming high sugar and carbs. All I do is eat mostly butter/ghee as my fat source. I do not eat olive oil or any vegetable oil for that matter in any significant degree. I eat mostly butter/ghee and some beef fat. I do eat carbs, not because I am pro carb per se. I do because I like them and my stomach is shrinking despite consuming them as long as I eat mostly saturated fat and no polyunsaturated oil to speak of. The ideal diet is probably eating mostly red meat with perhaps added butter. Vegetables and fruit are not necessary for nutrition and actually add antinutrients to your diet.
Fascinating and really helpful. can't help thinking though that had you done all that you say from the start, you would have missed out on so much valuable experience which we have benefited from so much following the channel.
