I have heard this song a million times without picking out that organ. Rick, you are a unique combination of expert, teacher, communicator and all round decent bloke, you are getting me through the current lockdown almost single handed, best channel on TH-cam by a country mile
I guarantee he never heard it until he started isolating tracks. Because that keyboard was probably there for reference only during recording, it follows the basic rhythm of the song.
@@elizabethjohnson6386Definitely! It's so weird because it almost transforms the mix completely. I remember in his first video about All The Small Things, when he pointed out the octave synth in the chorus. I'd never noticed it before, since it was so buried in the mix. But after he pointed it out, it brought it right to the top of the mix for me and I hear it clear as day every time. It's almost like an auditory illusion
Funny, I always thought the solo wasn't actually reversed. I thought it was some funky trick that Johnny did with the volume nob, kinda like a Tom Morello kinda trick.

That album is perfect. The instruments all compliment each other perfectly. John even said that's the album he learned to leave space and not overplay like he did on mother's milk... Which is still agreat album but different

Stephen Humphrey hey I don't know anything about either of those things but I do know a little bit about respect/kindness/humility and I just want to thank you for expressing yourself in that comment. Cheers to you!
So did John Frusciante … ( Most of the songs off ‘Mother’s Milk’ and the recording sessions were written by John Frusciante when he was 17 and had not yet joined RHCP, but was jamming with his friend D.H. Peligro. So, ‘Mother’s Milk’ isn’t really a RHCP album, it’s basically a collection songs written by 17 year old John Frusciante with contributions from Flea (Higher Ground, Pretty Little Ditty), drum credits shared between D.H. Peligro + Philip “Fish” Fisher + Chad Smith then, Anthony Keidis adding vocals on top. All of which is a long way of saying ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ is the first RHCP album with John Frusciante and Rick Rubin. )

Flea was right all along. According to him, he as a bass player must listen to the sounds around him as the BASELINE SUPPORT of all the other instruments. He must be aware of what is happening around him. I'm picking the bass now and its a J bass.
Pinoy keyboard warrior - I hope you’ve gotten into bass since you wrote this! I always say it’s easy to be ok on bass and difficult to master. John Frusciante has professed his love for Black Sabbath's Masters of Reality album, particularly the way the guitar tracks were doubled up and panned hard left and right to sound HUGE. While it's certainly possible to have too many melodies/a busy melody happening at once, you probably can never have too much rhythm--and the Chili Peppers have always known this :D

Understandable if you'd rather not say but if so that would be so awesome. Anyways, I really enjoy your channel's content and just subscribed! Great job on all these!
This is why I love these videos so much. We're talking about a Chili Pepper's song and Rick takes a sidebar to teach us about "Sprechstimme" and Berg/Schoenberg opera.

Long time RHCP fan (not so much post californication), that was excellent thanks Rick. The bass line is so 'come together'. I also never knew the song was inspired by Nina Hagen.
I vividly remember the first time I heard this song; I had never heard anything like it, and it was one of the very few times in my life that I loved a song from the first few bars. I immediately bought the CD and took it home and played the whole thing. My flatmates were also hooked immediately and we ended up playing the whole album every day, sometimes more than once, for weeks. I've never had a response to an album like that before or since.
Something that particularly stuck out to me on that whole album was that the snare seemed to be dry in the right channel and a reverb return on the left which made me feel like the snare it crossed my head. For want of a better expression!
Maybe "Sprechgesang" (perhaps coined by "die Fantastischen Vier") may be also an appropriate term which literally translates to "Speaksinging" ;) .... LOVE your videos
Please do an episode for Under the Bridge. We need to get to the bottom of if he used a capo or not, and if those simultaneous high notes are overdubbed.
Kiedis' vocals were extremely dry as explained, so dry in fact, he was forced to, "Drink a little wattah."

Maurizio Mezzatesta I don’t know how you could listen to a song like Wet Sand and come to this conclusion, smh
Rick casually explaining how my favourite band works. Blows my mind
While it's certainly possible to have too many melodies/a busy melody happening at once, you probably can never have too much rhythm--and the Chili Peppers have always known this :D
Me. Beato it’s great to see your inspiration because you have been mine. My motivation was low but then I found your videos and bam I’ve been playing non stop. Thanks for all the great content!
Any chili peppers song is welcomed.
😍❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you mate. Slick video. The delivery, pace and clarity are just right. This series has really accelerated my understanding of music theory. Cheers
I wonder if the solo was actually played backwards of if it's a delay on reverse mode. I think it's a pedal. Either way I think it's an awesome solo! 😊
Love the "Chilli Peppers"! Also I really enjoy your videos. You've pointed so many things that I haven't noticed in all these songs that I've known and loved for so many years. Some things I've noticed but wasn't sure if I was really hearing them or not.
How do you get all these separate recording tracks? Understandable if you'd rather not say but if so that would be so awesome. Anyways, I really enjoy your channel's content and just subscribed! Great job on all these!
This is why I love these videos so much. We're talking about a Chili Pepper's song and Rick takes a sidebar to teach us about "Sprechstimme" and Berg/Schoenberg opera.
Please do some Pink Floyd
Need 3 episode for 1 song !
Always amazing to listen to just bass and drums of RHCP. Those guys always kill it!
Please do at least one:
Peal Jam- oceans|Black Sabbath- Planet caravan|Tool - Parabola|Megadeth - Sweating bullets|Perfect Circle- weak and powerless|Alice In Chains - would?|Alice In Chains - Nutshell|Cream - White room|Pantera- Hollow|Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Long time RHCP fan (not so much post californication), that was excellent thanks Rick. The bass line is so 'come together'. I also never knew the song was inspired by Nina Hagen.
John is the greatest guitar player of my generation - it's not even a discussion.
"...even though it's essentially rapping!"
Rick, you old fart lol. Love this series so much.
So glad this channel exists. So nice to have such a smart person who really understands and can play music giving a breakdown of thingd
Please do an episode for Under the Bridge. We need to get to the bottom of if he used a capo or not, and if those simultaneous high notes are overdubbed.
Nytron newer saw it with a capo
eocha24 im talking album version.
Nytron which simultaneus notes do you mean? What minute of the song?
