As a singer, what Chris can do is truly rare. I can sing Alice and chains, Pearl Jam and stone temple pilots because that’s the standard baritone/high baritone vocal range. Chris is so amazing because he is a tenor with a low register of a baritone. So he can start a song of sound like a classic high baritone. And I can sing that part of the song. And then Chris will belt those high notes out at that only he and few other people can hit. And then you can see why he was a one a kind. The greatest singer in rock.
I highly doubt you would be able to sing anything from the Layne era of AIC. Layne Staley was an amazing vocalist and had so much emotion to his singing. Just listen to songs like Down In A Hole, Would? or even the chorus for Man In The Box, great examples of how talented he was.
This might be a stupid point, but as someone who isn't fit to sing in anything other than a punk band, the one who causes me difficulty is Eddie. Chris obviously covers a far higher range across a song but it feels like the parts are more like overlays and if you pick an octave and sit in it you can can sing it and someone will be like "Yep, that's an absolute terrible version of Jesus Christ Pose." When it comes to Eddie he seems to use far more - range is the wrong word but variation or tonal leaps - within the melody and that can be surprisingly hard to replicate because you'll be merrily singing in your low gut and then suddenly the next word is hello-head-voice.

Eddie is more unpredictable because he changes his pitch when you don’t expect. Sudden changes between normal voice and head voice are what make my voice crack and is hard for me to do.

This is my number 1 song. The best moment of my life happened to me during Lolla '10. Chris jumped off stage into the security area. He eventually walked up to where I was standing. He then put the mic down between me and the guy standing next to me and we sang the chorus. None of my friends believed me.🤣
When I was in the Navy, I once was sitting in the barracks watching an episode of Beavis and Butthead, and this song came on. That was the first I had heard it. Beavis and Butthead loved it, and so did I, and I literally got up and went straight to Tower Records and bought Badmotorfinger. I listened to that CD probably 8000 times since.
Man, soundgarden is awesome. Beavis and butthead...it took time for me to get into them, but i miss them now...makes me happy to hear them again...i miss that episode where they imitate a bass guitar "boing, buh buh boing, boing, boing..."

The vocal track on ”Slaves and Bulldozers” is to die for. It’s like driving a monster truck with a stick shift. Just when you think he can’t do a higher note, with more intensity he just shifts in to another turbo gear and sings a phrase that goes to F over the high C with full distortion. It gives me chills every time.
16 minutes of this guy just expressing how cool Chris was, just enyoing the music. I loved this video. So much honesty. You can see the melancholy and joy in Rick's face. I totally relate to this.

Ian Thornley. Listen to the band "big wreck". They're an amazing band, and the singer is the lead guitarist and sounds very close to Chris, but he has his own uniqueness.
I saw Soundgarden perform this song live back in 2014. The show was amazing but the memory of this particular song is my favorite and stands out the most. Of all the songs they played Outshined must have resonated the most with the audience because it seemed everyone there was singing along at the top of their lungs. It seemed to me that the band noticed and was moved by it. I watched Chris react to the audience's feedback and they all seemed to get into it even more. It was one of those magical concert moments that happen far too infrequently. I'm glad I got to be there for it, and to see my favorite grunge band live before he passed away.

Chris Cornell was the greatest rock singer of all time, theres no disputing it after hearing this episode. At times Rick literally has no words to describe Cornells vocals, those moments were so honest and emotional to see, to know Rick feels the same as many of us is beautiful. I'm off to tune my guitar to drop D, laters!
As Much as I love his voice /singing , really I think he gave too much his first years , you can hear it later on in his career (audioslave for example) lots of times just became to heavy to sing
Badmotorfinger is my favourite Soundgarden album, and this is one of the killer tracks off it. So happy to have this celebrated in this way. 30 years later and it still sends shivers down my spine.
It’s impossible not to listen to Chris and get emotional. Such a voice, such a tragedy. I love his voice more than anything. I cry about him at least twice a year.
I started tearing up hearing Chris' vocals. Chris was one of the best singers ever and I still can't get over the fact he took his own life. Same thing with Chester Bennington. You know, I have nothing. No wife, no kids, and really no family left. I'm about $15k in debt, but I keep on going somehow. I just feel that you only get one life, and I can't just give up because I'm depressed. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Soundgarden was a really great band.
marvinshenk He and Chester Bennington were making a documentary about child sex trafficking. He mentioned it at his last concert and was likely killed (no matter what shill sites like Snopes say). He wasn’t suicidal and had totally recovered from issues in the distant past about that.
It's more than a theory, they both had defensive wounds on their bodies. I say it's more disrespectful to believe they killed themselves when there's evidence suggesting they didn't.

"I can't get any lower, still I feel I'm sinking" - I remember being so shocked at his death, thinking it came so out of the blue. When it happened I added loits of his songs to our playlist at work and it hit me straight away - his lyrics had been screaming his depression at us, calling out for help in letters ten feet tall for years and we didn't even see it.
Agreed. My wife and I were trying to sell our house when he died. We spent hours and hours painting each and every room listening to his solo album, Higher Truth over and over. I was shocked how the lyrics I enjoyed as story telling before he died became ominous after. You couldn't listen to that album after without thinking some songs were a cry for help and others a final farewell. Rough stuff.
That was saddest thing. He was sharing it for years. But he was such a great lyricist we didn't realize it even when he was being on the nose. It's not as if we could've helped him. But it feels good to think we might have been able to do something. Rest easy Chris. I hope all is sweet for you now.

Oh man, I love everything you do Rick and I had to comment on this one to thank you as I could see your emotion when you were talking about Chris. When I heard the news about Chris passing I had to take the next day off work which was a Friday to listen to all my Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog, Audioslave and Chris' solo stuff and just cry like I'd lost a family member because it really did feel like I had. On the Saturday I decided to throw what I guess you'd call a "wake" for Chris at my place. I invited all my friends who loved Chris as well and we listen to all my vinyl relating to him, drank and told stories about Chris and when we'd seen him live and it was so good to share the pain together and appreciate Chris. I still get emotional when I think about what happened but I do get pleasure knowing he is at peace now and his legacy will live on forever! ❤️
Rick did you almost tear up around those depressing lyrics? Chris was just amazing in so many ways. I saw him solo and he blew me away. His songs and his guitar skills. His OCD of having to pay an even number of songs off an album was great as he played four temple of the dog songs. It was so sad the day he died.
With so many "react" videos on you tube it's refreshing to see someone who clearly Loves this music. One one of my favorite channels on you tube. Great job brother.
The best thing about this video is not even Rick's usual insights about song building, it's how he thoroughly enjoys the music he is discussing. The verse riff is one of my favorites of all time. *And when this album came out...Chris Cornell became my favorite Rock vocalist of all time. When this came out I was in my late teens. Never heard anyone sing like that and never will again. RIP Chris.
@Luke Robinett Agreed 110% I was a music junky since I was 4 years old and then I heard this album when it came out and I was absolutely FLOORED. I just couldn't believe his range. My wife and I saw Cornell on his last solo acoustic tour and all those years later his vocals were still blowing me away. That solo acoustic tour is in my top 5 concerts of all time. About a year later he was gone.
The swagger and stomp of this song is killer. I've been enamored by it since I first saw the music video back when I was in junior high. Thanks for another great video, Rick.
I have a lot of favorite bands but Soundgarden are definitely one of my top 5, amazing musicians, I discovered their music at a crucial time and age for myself, I was really lost, very self-destructive, I even wonder if their writing contributed to my behavior at the time...and going back now and sitting with them and their music, Flower, Ultramega OK, Louder Than Love,(!), Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down On The Upside, especially their early stuff bc it was so raw so in my face, I always felt they were the most incredible combo Sabbath, Zeppelin, and hardcore punk, among other influences ...yeah, wow...so grateful for them and what they contributed to my life. I cried like I lost a loved one the morning I heard abt Cornell. Still miss his talent and his presence. Blessings to the surviving members and to all true due hard fans out there. Thank you, again, Mr. Beato, you are a true godsend. I love ur enthusiasm. Even at 55, you make me want to pick up my guitar and keep at it.
'Looking California, but feeling Minnesota'... Chris in a nutshell. Such a coo,l loving guy. Saw him at the show at The Fox in Atlanta the week before he left us. Complete fluke...a buddy of mine planned to take his son, but his son had a last minute conflict and he called to invite me. Here still had it, and as you said, all of that power was on tap without seeing to exert himself... Truly a rock god. Losing him and Tom Petty so close together has left a big hole in my heart. Rick, I don't think I commented, but I really appreciate that video you did the day after Chris died. It was a great tribute and just what I needed at that moment. Just wanted to say thanks.

For 25 years I listened to and loved the music and this kind of breakdown is both riveting and refreshing. I don't know how you gain access to the individual tracks but it is downright fascinating to hear in detail what we've been listening to for a couple of decades. Keep it up!
You have to be in the mood, alone in a dark room but then Soundgarden just kicks you away. So intense, Chris Cornell's vocals just tear you apart and the riffs burn the rest to ashes. That's music you gotta listen to loud AF, just awesome and definitely one of my heavy rock favorites.
Slaves & Bulldozers is my favorite song off of Badmotorfinger. Absolutely amazing album. I go back and forth whether I prefer this album to Superunkown. My two favorite albums from my favorite band. Chris will forever be missed. Greatest vocalist and lyricist in music history in my opinion. His solo stuff with just him and his guitar is crazy good as well. A song I find to be very underappreciated on Superunkown is Mailman. Very heavy and intense.
This is like the fifth time I've watched both of your Soundgarden videos because I love your content and I love Soundgarden so much. Every member of Soundgarden is really underrated at what they do: Kim is an incredible and unique guitarist and soloist, Matt is phenomenal and if not for Dave Grohl would be the best drummer of the grunge era, and Ben brings such an incredible power and grit to his bass playing (not to mention being a great songwriter alongside Chris). What can I say about Chris that hasn't been said a million times in a million different ways? The best singer in rock history, an incredible voice that was both smooth as butter and with more power than a nuclear bomb. Songwriting throughout his entire career (with Soundgarden, Audioslave, TotD, and solo work) is just phenomenal and inspiring. He's also one of the most underrated rhythm guitarists in rock as well.
Chris Cornell was my first and only celebrity crush as a tween and teen. Like he was prancing around shirtless in the Outshined video and that was all my teenaged girl hormones saw. The music captivated me, much like with Nirvana at that time, but Soundgarden was just.... different. Chris Cornell's passing is the hardest celebrity death ever for me. It has been almost 6 years and it still bothers me, and I don't know why or how to explain it. Badmotorfinger was a great album, the whole thing, front to back, but my favorite Soundgarden album has to be Down on the Upside for its sheer craziness and outlandish grooves, odd time signatures, and eeriness. I miss that sound, I miss those times, I miss that man. Man. The 90s.
Layne was so loud with little to no effort. Chris fucking put ALL he had from deep down in his soul into EVERY song. I definitely miss em both so much. I just hatethat Layne was always so fucked up all of the time. Unplugged was so painful.
Because they have an instict that produce diaphraghmatic support and vocal chord resonance. They didn't think about and work about how to sing because they felt how to do it. Nowadays singers are too technical like i am in my chest voice omg i am in head voice etc. You cant think about those things if you want to express your feelings. You just do it.
There're many isolated vocal tracks on TH-cam. The thing is that most of the vocal tracks are missing some parts or not completely soloed like vocals and drums or vocals and bass or vocals drums and bass so it's not 100% vocals only. But I'm grateful anyway, it's worth more than gold definitely.
I found Soundgarden for the first time on the video game Road Rash on PS. It was Outshined, Rusty Cage, Superunknown, and Kickstand. Fell in love from then on. I used to just watch the videos made for the game and listen to the songs for hours without ever playing.

When I sing this song I can hit that last high note. In fact, I can hit the high ones and the low ones...it's the ones in the middle that escape me. Too high for my chest voice and too low for my head voice.
The thing I love about these videos is that it takes me back to when I used to go over to bandmates' houses and just listen to one record after another together. We'd stop and comment, but mostly just really appreciate the music, how it made us feel and the craft that went behind it.
Got to contain one of my favourite Soundgarden lyric; "I'm looking California and feeling Minnesota, oh yeah" I'm sure we can all relate to that at some point.

Love these videos, Rick. but not a word about Matt Cameron's great drumming in this song?! I agree that Outshined is great, but you completely omitted one of the reasons. Cameron's syncopated rhythms and frilly high-hat patterns in Outshined are pure genius. Also, you mentioned the prophetically sad "still I feel I'm sinking" lyric, but not Chris Cornell's improvised trail-off on it, which IMO is also one of the song's more remarkable attributes.
That one makes me cry every time I hear it for reasons. And since his suicide, it hurts even more. The song always made me cry as I was perma-depressed my whole life, even at 13.
Each song on this album deserves it's own episode! The music world has not really come to terms on loosing this awesome artist and an absolute amazing quartet they were, God i miss you Chris!! Love 'Badmotorfinger' and this song. Glad for the mention of "Fell On Black Days". The way that song subtly builds and develops as it progresses is marvelous - builds tension and quietly unsettles. One of my very favorite Soundgarden songs.

This album blew my mind. The sound was unlike anything I've heard prior. It changed my own playing/writing. The song that made me rethink everything I thought I knew: "Outshined". The guitar riff in that song is epic. ....and the breakdown in "Rusty Cage"...whew!!!

Ian Thornley. Listen to the band "big wreck". They're an amazing band, and the singer is the lead guitarist and sounds very close to Chris, but he has his own uniqueness.

I saw Soundgarden perform this song live back in 2014. The show was amazing but the memory of this particular song is my favorite and stands out the most. Of all the songs they played Outshined must have resonated the most with the audience because it seemed everyone there was singing along at the top of their lungs. It seemed to me that the band noticed and was moved by it. I watched Chris react to the audience's feedback and they all seemed to get into it even more. It was one of those magical concert moments that happen far too infrequently. I'm glad I got to be there for it, and to see my favorite grunge band live before he passed away.
My dream is to see Rick Beato interviewing Kim Thayil... one day. 😌

Chris Cornell was the greatest rock singer of all time, theres no disputing it after hearing this episode. At times Rick literally has no words to describe Cornells vocals, those moments were so honest and emotional to see, to know Rick feels the same as many of us is beautiful. As Much as I love his voice /singing , really I think he gave too much his first years , you can hear it later on in his career (audioslave for example) lots of times just became to heavy to sing
Badmotorfinger is my favourite Soundgarden album, and this is one of the killer tracks off it. So happy to have this celebrated in this way. 30 years later and it still sends shivers down my spine.

I hear these songs 1000 times but after you break them down like this I appreciate them soooooo much more.
I started tearing up hearing Chris' vocals. Chris was one of the best singers ever and I still can't get over the fact he took his own life. Same thing with Chester Bennington. You know, I have nothing. No wife, no kids, and really no family left. I'm about $15k in debt, but I keep on going somehow. I just feel that you only get one life, and I can't just give up because I'm depressed. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Soundgarden was a really great band.
marvinshenk He and Chester Bennington were making a documentary about child sex trafficking. He mentioned it at his last concert and was likely killed (no matter what shill sites like Snopes say). He wasn’t suicidal and had totally recovered from issues in the distant past about that.

When it happened I added loits of his songs to our playlist at work and it hit me straight away - his lyrics had been screaming his depression at us, calling out for help in letters ten feet tall for years and we didn't even see it.
Agreed. My wife and I were trying to sell our house when he died. We spent hours and hours painting each and every room listening to his solo album, Higher Truth over and over. I was shocked how the lyrics I enjoyed as story telling before he died became ominous after. You couldn't listen to that album after without thinking some songs were a cry for help and others a final farewell. Rough stuff.
That was saddest thing. He was sharing it for years. But he was such a great lyricist we didn't realize it even when he was being on the nose. It's not as if we could've helped him. But it feels good to think we might have been able to do something. Rest easy Chris. I hope all is sweet for you now.

When you’re talking about how Chris never strained when singing. UGH! TELL ME ABOUT IT. I’m a lady and his notes and tones are hard. I love him. I call him and a few other singers “freaks of nature”
Oh man, I love everything you do Rick and I had to comment on this one to thank you as I could see your emotion when you were talking about Chris. When I heard the news about Chris passing I had to take the next day off work which was a Friday to listen to all my Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog, Audioslave and Chris' solo stuff and just cry like I'd lost a family member because it really did feel like I had. On the Saturday I decided to throw what I guess you'd call a "wake" for Chris at my place. I invited all my friends who loved Chris as well and we listen to all my vinyl relating to him, drank and told stories about Chris and when we'd seen him live and it was so good to share the pain together and appreciate Chris. I still get emotional when I think about what happened but I do get pleasure knowing he is at peace now and his legacy will live on forever! ❤️
Rick did you almost tear up around those depressing lyrics? Chris was just amazing in so many ways. I saw him solo and he blew me away. His songs and his guitar skills. His OCD of having to pay an even number of songs off an album was great as he played four temple of the dog songs. It was so sad the day he died.
With so many "react" videos on you tube it's refreshing to see someone who clearly Loves this music. One one of my favorite channels on you tube. Great job brother.

The verse riff is one of my favorites of all time. *And when this album came out...Chris Cornell became my favorite Rock vocalist of all time. When this came out I was in my late teens. Never heard anyone sing like that and never will again. RIP Chris.
@Luke Robinett Agreed 110% I was a music junky since I was 4 years old and then I heard this album when it came out and I was absolutely FLOORED. I just couldn't believe his range. My wife and I saw Cornell on his last solo acoustic tour and all those years later his vocals were still blowing me away. That solo acoustic tour is in my top 5 concerts of all time. About a year later he was gone.
The swagger and stomp of this song is killer. I've been enamored by it since I first saw the music video back when I was in junior high. Thanks for another great video, Rick.

I have a lot of favorite bands but Soundgarden are definitely one of my top 5, amazing musicians, I discovered their music at a crucial time and age for myself, I was really lost, very self-destructive, I even wonder if their writing contributed to my behavior at the time...and going back now and sitting with them and their music, Flower, Ultramega OK, Louder Than Love,(!), Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down On The Upside, especially their early stuff bc it was so raw so in my face, I always felt they were the most incredible combo Sabbath, Zeppelin, and hardcore punk, among other influences ...yeah, wow...so grateful for them and what they contributed to my life. I cried like I lost a loved one the morning I heard abt Cornell. Still miss his talent and his presence. Blessings to the surviving members and to all true due hard fans out there. Thank you, again, Mr. Beato, you are a true godsend. I love ur enthusiasm. Even at 55, you make me want to pick up my guitar and keep at it.
'Looking California, but feeling Minnesota'... Chris in a nutshell. Such a coo,l loving guy. Saw him at the show at The Fox in Atlanta the week before he left us. Complete fluke...a buddy of mine planned to take his son, but his son had a last minute conflict and he called to invite me. Here still had it, and as you said, all of that power was on tap without seeing to exert himself... Truly a rock god. Losing him and Tom Petty so close together has left a big hole in my heart.

For 25 years I listened to and loved the music and this kind of breakdown is both riveting and refreshing. I don't know how you gain access to the individual tracks but it is downright fascinating to hear in detail what we've been listening to for a couple of decades. Keep it up!
You have to be in the mood, alone in a dark room but then Soundgarden just kicks you away. So intense, Chris Cornell's vocals just tear you apart and the riffs burn the rest to ashes. That's music you gotta listen to loud AF, just awesome and definitely one of my heavy rock favorites.

Slaves & Bulldozers is my favorite song off of Badmotorfinger. Absolutely amazing album. I go back and forth whether I prefer this album to Superunkown. My two favorite albums from my favorite band. Chris will forever be missed. Greatest vocalist and lyricist in music history in my opinion. His solo stuff with just him and his guitar is crazy good as well. A song I find to be very underappreciated on Superunkown is Mailman. Very heavy and intense.
Mailman is my favorite of their songs. It definitely deserves more attention.
This is like the fifth time I've watched both of your Soundgarden videos because I love your content and I love Soundgarden so much.
Every member of Soundgarden is really underrated at what they do: Kim is an incredible and unique guitarist and soloist, Matt is phenomenal and if not for Dave Grohl would be the best drummer of the grunge era, and Ben brings such an incredible power and grit to his bass playing (not to mention being a great songwriter alongside Chris). What can I say about Chris that hasn't been said a million times in a million different ways? The best singer in rock history, an incredible voice that was both smooth as butter and with more power than a nuclear bomb. Songwriting throughout his entire career (with Soundgarden, Audioslave, TotD, and solo work) is just phenomenal and inspiring. He's also one of the most underrated rhythm guitarists in rock as well.
Matt Cameron's drumming on BMF is inventive and so crisp.
The Mind Riot verse groove is simple and brilliant.

Chris Cornell was my first and only celebrity crush as a tween and teen. Like he was prancing around shirtless in the Outshined video and that was all my teenaged girl hormones saw. The music captivated me, much like with Nirvana at that time, but Soundgarden was just.... different. Chris Cornell's passing is the hardest celebrity death ever for me. It has been almost 6 years and it still bothers me, and I don't know why or how to explain it. Badmotorfinger was a great album, the whole thing, front to back, but my favorite Soundgarden album has to be Down on the Upside for its sheer craziness and outlandish grooves, odd time signatures, and eeriness. I miss that sound, I miss those times, I miss that man. Man. The 90s.
Chris and Layne never looked like they struggled when singing. They both had such powerful vocals. Made it look so easy. Absolute legends 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Layne was so loud with little to no effort. Chris fucking put ALL he had from deep down in his soul into EVERY song. I definitely miss em both so much. I just hatethat Layne was always so fucked up all of the time. Unplugged was so painful.

Because they have an instict that produce diaphraghmatic support and vocal chord resonance. They didn't think about and work about how to sing because they felt how to do it. Nowadays singers are too technical like i am in my chest voice omg i am in head voice etc. You cant think about those things if you want to express your feelings. You just do it.
Chris had great range. Layne was consistently great live. Both incomparable. Both very missed.
I'd buy a cd of just solo Cornell vocals. Amazing.
There're many isolated vocal tracks on TH-cam. The thing is that most of the vocal tracks are missing some parts or not completely soloed like vocals and drums or vocals and bass or vocals drums and bass so it's not 100% vocals only. But I'm grateful anyway, it's worth more than gold definitely.

I found Soundgarden for the first time on the video game Road Rash on PS. It was Outshined, Rusty Cage, Superunknown, and Kickstand. Fell in love from then on. I used to just watch the videos made for the game and listen to the songs for hours without ever playing.

Yeh to me the lyrics of this song, and really all Soundgarden songs, are a big part of what made them great. Yes, Chris Cornell was an amazing vocalist, an awsm song writer, a top notch guitar player, but on top of all that he was one of the great lyricists.

When I sing this song I can hit that last high note. In fact, I can hit the high ones and the low ones...it's the ones in the middle that escape me. Too high for my chest voice and too low for my head voice.
The thing I love about these videos is that it takes me back to when I used to go over to bandmates' houses and just listen to one record after another together. We'd stop and comment, but mostly just really appreciate the music, how it made us feel and the craft that went behind it.

Love these videos, Rick. but not a word about Matt Cameron's great drumming in this song?! I agree that Outshined is great, but you completely omitted one of the reasons. Cameron's syncopated rhythms and frilly high-hat patterns in Outshined are pure genius. Also, you mentioned the prophetically sad "still I feel I'm sinking" lyric, but not Chris Cornell's improvised trail-off on it, which IMO is also one of the song's more remarkable attributes.
And "Mind Riot" is one of the most underrated rock songs ... ever.

This album blew my mind. The sound was unlike anything I've heard prior. It changed my own playing/writing. The song that made me rethink everything I thought I knew: "Outshined". The guitar riff in that song is epic.
